Refresh Roundup: week of March 5th, 2012

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 12:32 PM PDT

Your smartphone and / or tablet is just begging for an update. From time to time, these mobile devices are blessed with maintenance refreshes, bug fixes, custom ROMs and anything in between, and so many of them are floating around that it's easy for a sizable chunk to get lost in the mix. To make sure they don't escape without notice, we've gathered every possible update, hack, and other miscellaneous tomfoolery we could find during the last week and crammed them into one convenient roundup. If you find something available for your device, please give us a shout at tips at engadget dawt com and let us know. Enjoy!

Official Android updates

Archos G9: Let's start off the week of refreshes in a big way. Both the Archos 80 and 101 G9 tablets have received their official upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich -- more specifically, Android 4.0.4. The update also brings improvements to the Media Center video and music apps, along with fixes to the file manager. Just for good measure, users will also find their G9 now supports Xbox controllers. [Thanks, Simon] [Archos, G9 changelog]

HTC Vivid: AT&T has stated that, in the coming weeks, the Vivid will receive its bite of Ice Cream Sandwich (complete with Sense 4.0), in an update that'll also include Beats Audio profiles. [Android Community]

Motorola Droid 2 Global
: A handful of bug fixes await this QWERTY slider, which come in the form of update 4.5.629.A956 from Verizon Wireless. It brings security improvements, fixes an issue that'd caused the device to inadvertently turn on and also resolves device resets when music is played. Also on board, WAV files are now supported by the Visual Voicemail app, and users should now receive messages from Gmail more reliably whenever the Mobile Hotspot is in use. [Droid Life, Verizon Wireless changelog (PDF)]

Toshiba AT200
: No surprise here, but Toshiba seems intent on letting users know that Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to its latest tablet. As for a release date? That matter remains up in the air. [Pocket-lint]

Telstra: Aussies will appreciate knowing that Telstra is hard at work on bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the HTC Sensation and Velocity 4G, the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Sony Ericsson Arc S. The HTC updates should arrive any day now, while the refreshes for the Galaxy S II and Arc S should appear early next month. Not to escape without mention, the PR1.1 update for the Nokia N9 is also said to be right around the bend. [Thanks, Ryan] [Telstra]

Verizon Wireless: Big Red has provided a comprehensive list of every device scheduled to receive the Android 4.0 upgrade. From HTC, the Incredible 2, Rezound, Rhyme and Thunderbolt each made the list, as did the Spectrum from LG. Motorola devices on deck include the Bionic, Droid 4, Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx, along with the Xoom, Xyboard 8.2 and 10.1 tablets. Finally, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and 10.1 also made the cut. [Thanks, Myriam] [Verizon Wireless]

Unofficial Android updates, custom ROMs and misc. hackery

Google Nexus S
: Want to see an Engadget editor's head spin? Just slather Sense 4.0 all over the stock Android Nexus S. Yep, you've heard that right -- thanks to xda-developers member Swamp Goblin, you too can defile your phone's purity with a pre-alpha ROM that's in highly experimental stages. [Android Community, xda-developers]

Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet
: If you're interested in taking an alpha release of CyanogenMod 9 for a spin on your Nook Tablet, Nathan from the eBook Reader Blog put together a helpful walkthrough video to let you know what to expect, along with a set of installation instructions. While WiFi, sound and the accelerometer are all said to work just fine, the microphone, Bluetooth and hardware video acceleration didn't fare as well. There's also said to be some power management issues to be aware of. [eBook Reader Blog]

webCM9: A new package has been designed to bring a webOS-like task manager for all HP TouchPad users that've since moved on to CyanogenMod 9. [Netbook News, RootzWiki]

Other platforms

BlackBerry Curve 9360: BlackBerry 7.1 OS is now available for subscribers of SaskTel in Canada. The news follows similar releases from Bell Mobility and Virgin Mobile. Updates from Rogers and Telus are also said to be on deck. [MobileSyrup]

Nokia Lumia 800 & 710: Nokia has provided a changelog for the software update 12070 that made news both this week and last for the Lumia 800. In addition to the battery life improvements and camera enhancements, it also brings improved audio performance, provides illumination of the soft-keys at all brightness levels and addresses a nasty bug that'd caused reboots and system freezes. Additionally, the same update for the Lumia 710 is said to bring smoother operation when ending a call. [My Nokia Blog]

Neato Robotics' XV-21 vacuum sucks up pet hair and allergens, looks like a new-age SNES

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 11:21 AM PDT

Sure, iRobot may have a strong presence in the impending robot apocolypse world of autonomous vacuum cleaners, but lest we forget about the others like Neato Robotics. The company's introducing the retro-futuristic XV-21 Pet and Allergy Vacuum for those of us wanting rid our domains of sniffle-inducing dust particles. Although the XV-21 looks similar to last year's XV-12, it features a new filter for improved airflow and suction, which Neato claims will catch three-times as many tiny bits around your domain as its normal kit. If that wasn't enough, the cleaner is also loaded with newly developed bristled brush to aid in sweeping up the likes of pet hair while keeping its noise levels to a minimum. If you're ready to leave the cleaning to the bots, this little guy is set to hit shelves in late April for $429 alongside a $60 Pet and Allergy kit packed with the filter (30 bucks on its own) and brush. Current Neato owners shouldn't fret either, as the add-ons are compatible with all of the company's vacuums, requiring only an upgrade to the latest firmware via USB. You'll find the full details in the press release after the break.

NEATO ROBOTICS LAUNCHES PET AND ALLERGY VACUUM CLEANER

Latest Neato XV-21 automatic vacuum cleaner features improved ability
to pick up pet hair and dirt and reduce allergens on all floor types
for cleaner, healthier homes

Newark, Calif., March 12, 2012 - Neato Robotics®, a Silicon Valley
company that pioneers new technologies and products to free people
from household chores, today announced a new automatic vacuum cleaner
that's designed especially for pet owners and allergy sufferers. The
Neato XV-21, which works on all floor types, includes a new bristled
brush to improve the pick-up of pet hair, dander and fibers and allows
the vacuum cleaner to run more quietly than previous models,
especially on hardwood floors. A new filter, which is cleanable and
designed for long-term use, provides increased airflow and suction
power that allows the Neato XV-21 to pick up and retain more than
three times the fine dust particles of the company's standard filter.
The new brush and filter will work with all other existing Neato
Robotics models on the market today, making it easy for current owners
to upgrade their automatic vacuum cleaners.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends vacuuming
frequently and reducing the amount of pet dander, fur and feathers in
the home as two simple steps to help prevent allergy outbreaks. A 2011
study by Quest Diagnostics found that allergies are on the rise in the
U.S. with one in five Americans now being affected. Allergies to dust
mites, pet dander, ragweed and other allergens now account for more
than 17 million visits to the doctor per year, according to the
report.

With the Neato XV-21's ability to automatically clean homes on its own
with no human assistance, allergy sufferers can avoid allergens in the
air caused by cleaning that can sometimes trigger reactions. Customers
can easily set an automatic cleaning schedule for the Neato XV-21 to
clean every day, keeping homes neat and healthy and carpets
well-groomed. It vacuums close to walls and corners, avoids bumping
into furniture and returns automatically to its base to re-charge
itself.

"Our customers have increasingly asked us for a better way to pick up
even more pet hair, dander and fine dust in their homes," says Warren
Flick, CEO of Neato Robotics, Inc. "The Neato XV-21 delivers on that
market need with a combination of increased suction power and airflow
and more than three times the fine dust pick-up of our standard
filters. We continue to focus on delivering new, innovative products
that save customers time and keep homes neat, clean and healthy.

The Neato XV-21 is available in Misty White with purple highlights and
is designed to automatically and intelligently clean homes on a daily
basis, ensuring clean floors and more free time for its owners. Using
smart path planning and a methodical back-and-forth cleaning pattern,
it thoroughly cleans all types of floors and creates that neat, "just
cleaned" look on carpets.

Availability and Pricing

The Neato XV-21 will be available for purchase for $429 M.S.R.P. at
the end of April through the Neato Robotics website and an expanding
list of retail partners. The new pet and allergy filter ($29.99
M.S.R.P.) and Pet and Allergy Upgrade Kit that includes the new
bristled brush ($59.99 M.S.R.P.) will work with all other existing
Neato Robotics automatic vacuum cleaners and simply requires customers
to download a free version of the 2.6 firmware upgrade using the USB
port on the back of unit.

Chinese official: We're not issuing 4G licenses for another two to three years

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 09:13 AM PDT

China isn't in a huge hurry get its own 4G network up and running, instead wanting to ensure the infrastructure is primed and enough compatible handsets are available before it launches. According to the head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Miao Wei, the country needs plenty more base stations -- beyond the existing 220,000 TD-SCDMA bases and closer to 400,000 -- before the government starts offering 4G licenses. China Mobile, the country's largest mobile network, already plans to have over 20,000 TD-LTE base stations in operation by the end of this year, stepping up to 200,000 by the end of next year. This particular type of LTE hasn't quite set the world on fire just yet -- only two operators have launched TD-LTE services and a genuine handset for the network remains absent. Upgrading existing 3G stations is likely to take around three years, according to the official. At least it gives ZTE more time to get the MT73 readied for ICS -- or perhaps Android 5.0.

PlayBook controlled robo-buggy can see you smiling at it (video)

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 07:38 AM PDT

If iRobot tickled your fancy, but you don't have the budget for military-grade technology, how about this fella? So, it's not officially called PlayRobot, but if there was a naming convention, we guess that would be it. The buggy has a mounted camera, which relays video back to a PlayBook over a WiFi connection set up via a BlackBerry 9900. The six-wheeler is controlled by an on-screen joystick, much like many tablet versions of arcade games. It's an entrant into this weekend's Robot Challenge in Vienna, so thanks to that video link, at the very least, if it doesn't win they can't say they didn't see it coming.

T-Mobile to debut unlimited mobile-to-mobile plan next month?

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 05:52 AM PDT

Here's a juicy little rumor that's sure to excite the T-Mobile faithful. Retail training materials, acquired by TmoNews, indicate that the nation's fourth largest wireless provider may launch an "Unlimited Any Mobile" add-on early next month. The feature can be tacked on to existing T-Mo plans (with some exceptions) for a paltry $10 a month. Once added, you're free to call any US mobile without having to think about minutes, and there's no contractual commitments to the package. Sprint patrons have enjoyed this luxury for quite some time, and AT&T users can get the same, with the adoption of an unlimited text messaging plan. If this does materialize, maybe it'll help woo some of those customers back.

German government proposes to charge search engines for excerpting news sites

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 03:48 AM PDT

A German government committee is proposing changes that could force search engines operating in the country to pay for using news excerpts. The plans involve setting up a department to charge royalties from sites that aggregate news feeds, and covers them for 12-months from date of publish. This isn't the first country to attempt to protect publishers' material, with the Newspaper Licensing Agency in the UK also performing a similar role. Before you hide your news blog from German eyes, the ruling will only affect commercial outfits.

Germany's publishing executives have been pushing for such a move since a case in Belgium that saw Google News forced to stop excerpting articles. Unsurprisingly there is strong support from the industry, with 149 execs from the country already having petitioned the government with a "Hamburg Declaration on Intellectual Property Rights" proposal in 2009, and both the German Federation of Newspaper Publishers and Association of German Magazine Publishers also campaigning for change. Now that the committee has laid down clear plans, it remains to be seen if or how they will be implemented, but with the nation's track record for pulling no punches where technology is concerned, search engines might have to prepare for a rapid change in policy.

Tel Aviv University develops biodegradable transistor, literally man made

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 12:52 AM PST

Blood sweat and tears go into many projects, and in this case almost literally -- although technically it's blood, milk and mucus. Yep, researchers at Tel Aviv University have created biodegradable transistors from proteins found in the aforementioned organic substances. When the proteins are mixed with base materials in the right combinations, it seems they self-assemble into a semi-conducting film. Why blood, milk and mucus? Apparently, the different proteins each have unique properties. Blood's oxygen storing ability, for example, helps mix chemicals with semi-conductors to give them specific properties, while milk and mucus (the only time we want to see them together) have fiber forming, and light-creating properties respectively. The hope is that this can lead to flexible and biodegradable technology. The team at Tel Aviv says it's already working on a biodegradable display, with other electronic devices to follow -- which should help stem the flow of waste.

T-Mobile CMO: subsidized pricing hurts wireless competition, undermines hardware value

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 10:41 PM PST

Could an end to unsubsidized smartphones be on its way for US carriers? If T-Mobile's Chief Marketing Officer Cole Brodman had his way, that familiar on-contract pricing would've gone the way of the Dodo a long time ago. Speaking at this week's GeekWire Summit in Seattle, the Magenta exec vented his frustrations with the industry's current business model, citing his belief that low cost handsets not only distort consumers' perspectives, effectively "[devaluing].. the hardware they are using," but also position wireless market players to compete unevenly. When pressed as to why his own network hadn't effected the change, Brodman referenced the lack of cooperation from other major operators, in addition to a market driven by subscribers' purchase habits. As for the fourth place network's glaring iPhone omission, Brodman seemed nonplussed, highlighting the variety of Android and Windows Phones available on its lineup, while asserting his faith in a multi-OS marketplace. While you keep those toes crossed in the hopes of a subsidy-free mobile future, check out the source below for the full panel interview.

Apple WALT prototype hits eBay, reminds us of a life with landlines

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 08:41 PM PST

As it turns out, Apple too used to announce products at trade shows... only to never actually ship them. Back in the halcyon days of the early '90s, Apple revealed the WALT (Wizzy Active Lifestyle Telephone) at Macworld Boston, touting a fairly amazing feature set. Things like a touchscreen, handwriting recognition, fax support, an address book, caller ID, online banking and a speakerphone set it apart from the landline devices of its day, and being that it was co-developed with Bell South, it's pretty clear that your pops had his eye one at some point. Those looking to relive the corporate boom of one-nine-nine-to-the-tres can plunk down $8,000 of 2012's dollars at the eBay link below; just don't expect it to work out of the box, okay?

Ask Engadget: Best AT&T smartphone for occasional tethering?

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 06:55 PM PST

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from is from Paul who is looking for a handset for his tethering needs. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"Hello! Can you help me decide if I should take my freshly available upgrade on AT&T or hold on for a while. In the past I've made some rash decisions that led to immediate regret and two years of gadget envy. If I had to choose today, I'd pick a Samsung Focus S, because of the overall feature set of Mango and its small size. It'd be nice to have a mobile hotspot for syncing my Kindle Fire while I'm camping and a camera should Bigfoot happen across my path. Please help me, Engadget gurus!"
If you asked us, we'd advise keeping our powder dry for a month or two, because there's a whole slew of handsets that were announced at MWC we'll be seeing in Q2 of this year. But heck, what do we know? There's a river of eager commenters below this post all desperate to help, so help away!

HP readying competitor for Amazon's cloud computing, plans to launch soon

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 05:15 PM PST

We're still waiting to see where HP goes with webOS, but according to the New York Times it will officially launch a cloud computing service that competes with Amazon Web Services in the next couple of months. HP Senior VP and General Manager Zorawar Singh is quoted saying the currently in beta service projects as an alternative to what Amazon has built with a focus on personalized sales and service and additional tools for third party developers, as well as a system of small data centers around the world. Throw in analytics based on technology it's obtained by purchasing Vertica and Autonomy, and maybe Meg Whitman's ship has something here, but we'll wait until the next Netflix is running its operations from this cloud before declaring it on the same level.

Toshiba outs Satellite P8-series laptops, treads line between enigmatic and annoying

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 03:27 PM PST

Toshiba gave us an early glimpse of its glasses-free 3D Satellite P855 a few days ago and has now revealed a little more about the rest of the P8-series. The company still isn't talking processors or GPUs, beyond saying that the line-up will use the "latest" hardware from Intel and "next-gen graphics from NVIDIA." Without getting breathless about it, this hints at what we'd already hoped: some Ivy Bridge action coupled with the possibility of Kepler graphics -- after all, these new Satellites won't start shipping til the next quarter. Regardless, here's some stuff we know for sure: The full line-up includes a second 15.6-incher (the P850) and two 17.6-inchers (the P870 and P875) which will do away with the lenticular 3D display but keep the metallic finish, LED backlighting, backlit keyboard, Slip Stream audio for playing music while in standby, four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out, WiDi and BlueTooth 4.0, while also offering the options of a Blu-ray drive and hybrid hard-drive (8GB solid, 750GB spinning). No official word on pricing yet, but we've already reported that the range will likely start at £599 ($940). So, breathless is too much, but breathy is okay.

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 01:35 PM PST

While there's an array of unofficial third-party keyboards willing to pair up with your 7-inch RIM slate, an approved peripheral is likely to be the better option. At least, it's what the BlackBerry-authorized add-on aims to accomplish. Dubbed Mini Keyboard, which also doubles as a "convertible" case, it's said to start shipping on March 23rd for $120, packing a multitouch trackpad and claiming up to a month of juice on a single charge. Additionally, the device features 128bit encryption to put your paranoia at ease when you're using that shiny OS 2.0. We've yet to hear an official word from RIM about price and availability, however, the source below seems to be taking pre-orders now.

Marvel Comics greets true believers with free digital copy for select print titles

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 11:47 AM PST

With great purchasing power apparently comes great affordability for Marvel Comics fans. Starting this June, folks who purchase any Marvel super hero comic priced at $3.99 will also get a free digital copy for Android or iOS. Examples of Marvel titles that will come with free codes include the Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Mighty Thor and Invincible Iron Man. The new program continues the trend of comic book publishers invading the digital space like famished planet-eaters -- Dark Horse, for instance, recently made a deal with Barnes & Noble. Similarly, DC Comics inked an agreement with Amazon, a move that got some DC titles sent to the Phantom Zone by B&N. Judging from the positive response to digital codes included in the Ultimate Comics line and Avenging Spider-Man, Marvel expects the expanded code program to act like a radioactive spider bite for comic book stores, boosting repeat visits. Feel that tingling? That's your own Spidey sense telling you to swing past the break for Marvel's official PR.

Marvel is proud to announce that, beginning June 2012, all Marvel super hero comics priced at $3.99 will include codes for free digital copies of those same issues on the Marvel Comics app for iOS and Android devices at no extra cost! That's right, the most-talked-about comics in the industry-including AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN, THE MIGHTY THOR, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN and more-will come packed with a code to ensure fans have the most critically acclaimed stories with them anytime, anywhere.

"We're committed to bringing fans the best value in comics. By including codes for free digital copies in all our $3.99 super hero comics, we're doing just that" said David Gabriel, SVP of Sales, Marvel Entertainment. "We've seen a tremendous response to the digital codes in Avenging Spider-Man, our Season One graphic novels and the Ultimate Comics line. The positive reactions from both retailers and fans make it clear that including these codes with our books drives customers into comic stores on a repeated basis."

Marvel made comic book history in 2011 by announcing all titles in the Ultimate Comics line would include codes for free digital copies on the Marvel Comics app, with unrivaled incentives for comic shop retailers. Then, in 2012, Marvel announced the acclaimed Season One graphic novels would also include similar codes making them the first graphic novels to ever include codes for free digital copies at no extra cost.

"At Marvel, we're always looking for ways to bring the worlds of print and digital media together to deliver the best comics experience for our fans," said Peter Phillips, SVP & GM, Marvel Digital Media. "With this next step, fans will soon be able to buy their comics from their favorite retailers but also enjoy them on their mobile devices and tablets, all at no extra charge. Welcome to the Revolution."
