Alexandre Herchovitch dresses up HP Pavilion dm1 with golden doilies, higher sticker price

Posted: 15 Apr 2012 09:23 AM PDT

Ask the most fashionable folks you know, looking good isn't cheap -- no surprise then, that playing dress up has put a premium on the HP Pavilion dm1's price tag. Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchovitch has dolled up the ultraportable laptop with a lacy gold topcoat, applying the signature flair to the machine's keyboard, palm rest and lid. The cost of style? About $1800, according to Notebook Italia, which buys you 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, a 500GB hard drive and 1.65GHz dual-core AMD E-450 brain. A pretty penny, considering the notebook's Core i3 model can be had for a mere $600. Sure, Herchovitch takes the dm1 out of our holiday gift guide's "on the cheap" section, but where else are you going to get a designer doily kicks?

Robo-guard the South Korean correction service robot says 'stay out of trouble' (video)

Posted: 15 Apr 2012 06:35 AM PDT

It sounds like the sequel that didn't even make it to DVD: RoboCop's jaded, rotund, less attractive younger brother, who never made the police force -- and tired of living in his sibling's shadow -- took a job as the next best thing: a prison guard. Well, that might not make the silver screen, but it's certainly reality TV. Meet Robo-guard, the world's first robotic correctional officer. Developed in South Korea, Robo-guard is equipped with 3D cameras that let it observe inmates, while special software looks out for changes in behavior. Should anything suspicious be detected, he'll raise the alarm. A lone wolf, he works his beat autonomously, but can also be controlled manually via an iPad, if human colleagues want to check what's going down. Initial field trials are under way right now, and if all goes well, he'll earn a place in more prisons. Who knows, he may even make deputy one day.

Best Buy details its 50 big box store shutdowns in the US, most will close by May 12th

Posted: 15 Apr 2012 02:28 AM PDT

We knew Best Buy planned to close 50 of its big box retail locations by the end of its 2013 fiscal year, and now (just days after Mike Mikan took the CEO-reigns from Brian Dunn) it's detailed all of the stores that'll be getting the boot. As it stands, two locations have already been shut down, with six others set to close before the year is out -- and the company hopes to clear out the remaining 42 before May 12th. Employees at most of the stores were informed of the news this weekend, and despite the impending closures, the company says it'll try to re-position them within the company or offer up severance packages. Past that, Best Buy is also reaching out to the customers of these stores, noting that they'll still have other nearby locations to choose from -- try-before-you-buy online shoppers rejoice. There's still no specific word about the 100 Best Buy Mobile stores it hopes to setup, but more information will be forthcoming later in the year. Hit up the press release after the break if you'd like to parse the full list of affected locations or find out more details about the planned closures.

Best Buy Confirms Closure Plans for Remaining 42 U.S. Big Box Stores

Brings total of store closures to 50 by end of 2012

Most locations will permanently close by May 12; three additional locations to close by late summer

RICHFIELD, Minn. – April 14, 2012 – Best Buy announced plans March 29, 2012 to close 50 U.S. stores as part of a number of key initiatives for this year. To date, we have closed two stores this year (one in Kansas City, Mo., and one in Scottsdale, Ariz.), plus have notified five Twin Cities stores and one San Antonio store that they will close later this year.

This morning, we have confirmed the remaining 42 store locations that will close. A complete list of store locations can be found at the end of this statement. Employees of these 42 stores have been notified this morning.

This was not an easy decision to make. We chose these stores carefully, and are working to ensure the impact to our employees will be as minimal as possible, while serving all customers in a convenient and satisfying way. But we also recognize the impact this news has on the people who deserve respect for the contributions they have made to our business.

We will be working to help these employees find other positions inside Best Buy. If they don't find new positions, or if they choose not to work at a different location, a transition including severance packages will be available.

Three of these 42 locations remain open today, Saturday; the rest of the affected stores are closed today, and will reopen Sunday, April 15. Customers currently doing business with these stores are being contacted today.

We expect most of these stores will permanently close by May 12. Three additional locations are expected to permanently close later this summer. 2

Best Buy continues to have additional retail store locations – big boxes and standalone Best Buy Mobile stores – for customers to choose from in these affected locations.

More broadly, our previously announced retail store actions are intended to increase points of presence, while decreasing overall square footage, for increased flexibility – including key store remodels with a new Connected Store format, while continuing to build out the successful Best Buy Mobile small format stores throughout the U.S. We will continue to share details of such actions as the year progresses. We are committed to making it easier for customers to shop with us, whenever and wherever they want.

Canonical's AWSOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both

Posted: 15 Apr 2012 12:45 AM PDT

New features and services that improve Canonical's latest version of Ubuntu seem to keep rolling in. The latest addition being the announcement of its AWSOME proxy service. No, that's not us getting over excited about it, that stands for Any Web Service Over Me, and it includes APIs that smooth the transition to OpenStack from Amazon cloud services. Although not open source, Amazon's Web Service has such a large market share, that Canonical clearly want to make integrating with it as smooth as possible. The AWSOME proxy will only provide basic functionality for the AWS side of things, with users still encouraged to adopt the OpenStack infrastructure for deeper capabilities. Still, if you're currently working with Bezos' platform, and this was the last barrier to hopping aboard the Precise Pangolin ship, you're in luck.

Nouveau open source NVIDIA driver goes stable, gets benchmarked

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 09:32 PM PDT

Nouveau, the open source graphics driver for NVIDIA GPUs is finally taking off the stabilizers, wandering out from the staging area, and being accepted as part of the standard stable kernel set-up. The project began nearly six years ago, so it's been a long road, but one that has earned it favor in certain corners of the Linux world. Things started gaining traction in the last three years as more and more distros started adopting, and Mr Linux himself, Linus Torvalds, suggested it be part of the kernel. Want to see how it performs? Head on down to the source link where the gents at Phoronix have kindly given it some comprehensive benchmarks.

Ask Engadget: best heavy-duty cloud-storage solution?

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 06:50 PM PDT

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from is from is from Joe, who needs to backup half a terabyte of data to the cloud, as you do. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
"I'm looking for an online backup solution for between 100GB, up to 500GB of data. New options are popping up everywhere recently, but what's the best cloud storage backup solution that'd allow for easy drag-and-drop backup, syncing across multiple computers both Mac and Windows, access from Android devices and at a reasonable price? Thanks!"
Well, he doesn't want much, does he? Just world-class storage, universal device access and all for a rock-bottom price. There's plenty of contenders in this particular competition, from Dropbox all the way through to, erm, Box. It's kinda clear that Joe's not just backing up his holiday photos, so even enterprise-level offerings are worth suggesting. Still, the floor's now open to you, so fire away.

Mobile Miscellany: week of April 9th, 2012

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 05:30 PM PDT

Not all mobile news is destined for the front page, but if you're like us and really want to know what's going on, then you've come to the right place. This past week, we've seen clues to suggest the Galaxy Nexus will arrive at Sprint in a matter of days, and leaked materials suggest Rogers will have the HTC One X in stock by April 20th. These stories and more await after the break. So buy the ticket and take the ride as we explore the "best of the rest" for this week of April 9th, 2012.

Samsung's pink Galaxy Note hits South Korea

Image

You may remember this one from our hands-on at CeBIT, where we were given a sneak peek at Samsung's upcoming pink Galaxy Note. The company made its rosy handset official this week, and was proud to show it off with the assistance of its booth professionals. [Samsung Tomorrow (translated)]

AT&T's Lumia 900 campaign may be its most expensive effort to date

AdAge reports that AT&T will spend upwards of $150 million to promote the Nokia Lumia 900, which would make it the most expensive campaign to market a single device in the carrier's history. It's quite a large bet for what could be a relatively niche smartphone, but with the iPhone now available on Sprint and Verizon, the move suggests that AT&T is once again looking to differentiate itself with a company exclusive. Meanwhile, both Sprint and Verizon remain alarmingly frigid to Microsoft's mobile platform, and AT&T could do well by promoting itself as the carrier of choice for Windows Phone users. LG Optimus L7 to arrive in Europe this month, Optimus L5 to follow in May

Image

A few of the smartphones that we first met at Mobile World Congress are starting to become available to the masses, and soon enough, both the Optimus L7 and L5 may count themselves among the bunch. LG France announced on its blog that the Optimus L7 will arrive in late April for an unsubsidized price of €319, and the Optimus L5 will arrive at the end of May -- no price was mentioned for it. For a bit of a recap on both devices, be sure to check out our hands-on from Barcelona. [Unwired View]

Leaked training docs suggest HTC One X to hit Rogers on April 20th

Image

We previously reported that Rogers has made the HTC One X available for pre-order, and as part of that promotion, all customers who stake their claim before April 30th may pick up the handset for $170 on a three-year contract. Now, however, a bit of training material received by MobileSyrup suggests the carrier has targeted April 20th as the official launch date for the smartphone -- not long until we find out for sure. [MobileSyrup]

Dolphin Browser HD 8.0 hits the Play Store

Image

The popular alternative web browser for Android, known as Dolphin Browser HD, officially turned 8.0 this week. Most notably, users will discover a new menu bar, a refreshed side panel and easier access to Dolphin Sonar -- the browser's attempt to behave like Siri. Developers also managed to squash a few known bugs along the way. [Droid Life]

Galaxy Nexus launch at Sprint becomes more imminent

Image

Chatter across the grapevine gives strong indication that the Galaxy Nexus will arrive at Sprint within the next eight days. Debut posters are thought to hang in the windows of Sprint dealers as of tomorrow, and similarly, Best Buy's internal planning documents reveal that the big box retailer expects to have devices on its shelves by April 22nd. Canon 'examining countermeasures' for 5D Mark IIIs experiencing top LCD light leak problem

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 05:03 PM PDT

Looks like the honeymoon period with Canon's beastly 5D Mark III is officially over. Over the past few weeks some users have noticed that light leaking from its top-mounted LCD can affect exposure readouts, and now the company has confirmed that it's indeed an issue. Essentially, the camera's meter can experience a shift in the readout whenever the LCD's backlight turns on in a dark situation -- ensuring frustration when composing shots. There's no word on how wide-spread the problem currently is, but Canon notes that it's "examining the countermeasures" and plans to circle back once it has a solution. Interestingly, PetaPixel also reports that some folks have experienced the phenomenon when ambient light beams down on the panel as well. This isn't the first time Canon's had an issue with a shooter after its release, but hopefully a fix will be in soon. You'll find more details at the links below, but while you're here, let us know if you've got a Mark III showcasing the symptoms in the comments.

Sharp rolls out high-res IGZO LCDs destined for tablets, laptops and monitors

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 02:33 PM PDT

Well, a week (or two) is a long time in the technology industry, and despite that joint venture with Sony heading south, it's not all bad news for Sharp. According to a press release from the panel maker, it has begun production of the world's first screens based on IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology. These screens are said to promise twice the detail as existing panels of similar transparency, which also translates into a hefty 90 percent reduction in power consumption, reports PC World. Sharp did kindly share some sample specifications, such as a 7-inch tablet display touting a 1280 x 800 resolution equaling 217 ppi, and a 32-inch 3840 x 2160 screen at 140 ppi, to give you an idea of what we can expect. There's no indication yet as to any devices where we might see them showing up, but as the firm claims it's ramping up production "to meet market demand" we guess we'll find out soon enough...

Sharp Begins Production of World's First LCD Panels Incorporating IGZO Oxide Semiconductors

In March 2012 at Kameyama Plant No. 2, Sharp began producing the world's first high-performance LCD panels incorporating IGZO oxide semiconductors. Sharp is expanding production scale through April to meet market demand.

Kameyama Plant No. 2 first started operations in August 2006, manufacturing highly advanced LCD panels for TVs. Production systems have subsequently been reorganized to focus on producing small- and medium-sized LCD panels for the world's rapidly growing smartphone and tablet terminal markets.

Employing advanced IGZO oxide semiconductors enables Sharp to produce LCDs with smaller thin-film transistors and increased pixel transparency, thus allowing for lower energy consumption. In addition, proprietary UV2A*3 photo-alignment technology employed in Sharp's AQUOS LCD TVs enables these displays to achieve high image quality.

Sharp will encourage the application of its new high-resolution LCD panels to high-definition notebook PCs and LCD monitors-which are both expected to grow in demand-as well as to mobile devices. Sharp will also contribute to creating markets for attractive new products.

BBS version of Google takes you back in time, won't hog your phone line

Posted: 14 Apr 2012 12:45 PM PDT

If the third digit of your birth year is a nine (or heck, a zero), you'll likely never have experienced the true agony joy that was BBS or Bulletin Board Systems. Well, thanks to nostalgic developer Norbert Landsteiner, you can take a glimpse at how your dad got online with an HTML / JavaScript emulation BBS Google. Likewise, more seasoned travelers of the internet can take a trip down memory lane and see what Mountain View's search engine might have looked like "back in the day." All the details are there, right down to the familiar modem tones and ASCII graphics, it's even somewhat functional (when the API isn't over its limit.) So, want to appreciate that browser you complain about on twitter all the time over your LTE connection? Tab on down to the source link for a lesson in gratitude.
