Humanoid bot created to analyze mechanics of swimming, replace unreliable carbon-based life forms

Humanoid bot created to analyze mechanics of swimming, replace unreliable carbon-based life froms

Meet Swumanoid. He's the replacement Tokyo Institute of Technology researchers have whipped up for pesky earthlings who can't identically repeat tests or minutely change their swimming style. The bot can reproduce a swimmer's full body movement and measure water resistance in an effort to shed some light on the forces acting on creatures like Michael Phelps. Created with 3D printed parts of an inferior human swimmer at half scale, it's attached to a drive unit and confined to a circulating water tank; Swumanoid takes two minutes and thirty-six seconds to swim roughly 300 feet, so it'll be a while before he and his kin chase you down. In the meantime, you can watch nightmare fueling footage of the bot presumably training for the Ironman Triathlon after the break.

Internet Explorer coming to Xbox 360, Kinect integration and all

Microsoft just confessed that while other outfits have brought web browsers to televisions, "no one is using them," because "keyboards don't belong in the living room." Aside from thoroughly slamming Google TV, MS just offered its own alternative: Internet Explorer on Xbox 360... with full-on Kinect / voice command integration. It'll hit later this year, right alongside Smart Glass.

Nike allies with Xbox 360 for Nike+ Kinect Training: real-time feedback, training reminders through your phone

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:14 AM PDT

Nike took to Microsoft's stage at E3 to announce a new fitness feature for your Kinect, Nike+ Kinect Training. We're told it'll make us "athlete-fit", with constant feedback on technique and every four weeks, it'll even re-assess your progress. The setup will also nag remind you through Windows Phone of incoming training sessions -- though there's no specifics on whether the fitness setup will play nice with other mobile platforms. The companion phone app will also allow you to compare and share progress with friends also using the training program.

Microsoft's SmartGlass gets official: app brings AirPlay-esque streams to Android, iOS and Windows Phone

Microsoft's Smart Glass gets official app brings AirPlayesque streams to Android, iOS and Windows Phone

Microsoft may not be introducing a next-gen console at E3 this year, but it is teaching its venerable Xbox 360 some new tricks. SmartGlass brings AirPlay-style wireless technology to Xbox and Windows 8 by letting you send video from your tablet or phone to your TV. It then turns that second screen into an information window giving you data of the content you're watching. Plus, it updates the info on your mobile device as the content on the TV changes. The app also enables peripheral controls for games you're playing -- so you can scroll through different plays on your tablet while playing Madden on your big screen, for example.

In addition to providing your peripherals with contextual awareness, the SmartGlass app turns your phone into a remote and trackpad for your Xbox, in case using Kinect and regular controllers aren't something you're into. So, you can pinch to zoom, move the onscreen cursor and scroll to your heart's content in Xbox's new web browser using your tablet or phone. When will we be seeing SmartGlass in living rooms? Unfortunately, not until this fall, so our liveblog photos of the app in action will have to suffice until then.

Microsoft announces Xbox Music, coming to PCs, tablets and phones

Say goodbye to Zune, folks. Microsoft has just announced its brand new Xbox Music service during its big E3 presentation. That brings with a library of more than 30 million tracks, which you'll be able to access across all of your Microsoft devices, including your PC, Windows 8 tablet and Windows Phone in addition to the Xbox 360 itself. Expectedly, that all comes wrapped in a Metro-style interface, but it appears to basically be a Zune rebrand beyond that, with few other surprises to be found (at least for now).

Microsoft enahnaces Xbox Bing Search with genre navigation, extends support to 12 additional countries

Microsoft's proud of its homegrown search product -- so proud, that gamers hooked on its Xbox Live service will find themselves uttering that word aloud in a bid for hands-free control. Announced today at its E3 keynote, the company's expanding Bing Voice search functionality with the ability to navigate by genre. Simply saying, "Bing comedy," will bring up a host of titles allocated to that category. And non-English speakers will get to enjoy this new perk as well, as the service will now extend to 12 additional countries. Stay tuned for more live coverage of E3 2012 as the show unfolds.

Xbox 360 software at E3: FIFA 2013 / Madden 2013 gaining Kinect voice commands; Halo 4, Fable, Forza Horizon and Gears of War showcased

Xbox 360 software at E3 FIFA 2013 Madden 2013 gaining Kinect voice commands, Halo 4, Fable, Forza Horizon and Gears of War showcased

No new hardware for Microsoft at E3? No problem. Clearly, this year's all about software for the Xbox 360, with both FIFA 2013 and Madden 2013 confirmed for release with Kinect support. Aside from letting you flail to and fro in order to make plays, both titles will also support voice commands, right down to understanding multiple dialects in the former. As for Madden? There's some pretty intense voice integration, enabling one Joe Montana to actually call plays and direct the huddle with his voice here at the E3 stage. The demo was unsurprisingly awesome, and we're told to expect it on store shelves on August 28th. For those who aren't exactly "sports-inclined," there's also Fable and Halo 4 -- two titles that'll supposedly make this year the "best ever" for Xbox 360 software.

Xbox 360 video gets 35 new content providers, 247 live ESPN video

Microsoft's E3 2012 keynote has seen it kick up the video content by more than a few notches: it's adding 35 new content providers for the Xbox 360. Machinima, Nickelodeon, Paramount and Univision are among the picks, but the real highlight is the sports push: the NBA and NHL will both have the live treatment that we've previously seen with the MLB. If you're a fan of the existing ESPN app, you're in for your own treat, too: a revamp, Watch ESPN, will provide 24/7 live video that includes sports from ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU. The timetables for each rollout will vary, but you can be sure you'll have an even wider selection before too long.

Nyko, NVIDIA out pair of PlayPad controllers for TegraZone gaming

If anything's giving gaming juggernauts like Nintendo and Sony reason to look over their shoulders, it's the recent uptick in mobile gaming. And much to those titans' chagrin, Nyko's come to stir the pot. Announced just today, the accessory maker's outing a new line of wireless controllers made specifically for TegraZone titles. The peripherals, co-developed with NVIDIA, come in two distinct sizes: the PlayPad Pro for more traditional gaming with its dual analog controllers, d-pad and array of shoulder and face buttons, and the diminutive PlayPad with its dual analog sliders, carrying case and foldable stand for a truer portable experience. Though both controllers are designed for use with optimized Tegra 2 or 3 titles, legacy games will also be supported via the accessory maker's free Playground app, which will also allow for customized layouts, as well as pre-sets for top titles on devices running Android 3.0 and up. No pricing or concrete release information's been made available at the moment, with the company mentioning only a Fall launch for later this year. We'll be sure to have a hands-on coming in the hours ahead, but for now, content yourself with the presser below.

Nyko Technologies Announces Gaming Controllers for Tegra-Based Tablets to Take Console-Quality Gaming Experience Mobile

LOS ANGELES – June 4, 2012 – Nyko Technologies®, the leading gaming peripherals manufacturer, today announced a new line of controllers to enable console-quality gaming experiences on Android tablet devices. Nyko is creating controllers to support games optimized for NVIDIA® Tegra® mobile processors, notably the high-powered graphics capabilities of the Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Available Fall 2012, the tablet controllers will offer a future-proof gaming experience, blurring the line between mobile and console video gaming.

"To embrace the enormous growth of mobile and tablet gaming, our new controllers will provide physical and familiar controls to tablet gamers for a console-like experience," said Chris Arbogast, director of marketing for Nyko Technologies. "Tablet games are evolving, pushing the envelope of graphics and performance. The only limitation has been the lack of physical-input controllers, until now. We are happy to collaborate with the veterans at NVIDIA to create dedicated hardware that's optimized for games running on the Tegra chipset."

The Nyko tablet controller series/line features:

PlayPad Pro – Nyko's full-sized controller for an at-home gaming experience, including dual analog sticks, d-pad, face buttons and shoulder triggers/bumpers for wireless tablet gaming in the living room.
PlayPad – Nyko's mini controller includes dual analog sliders, collapsible tablet stand and a carrying case for gaming on the go
Console-style control for ease of gameplay, perfect for first-person shooters and other complex games.
No rooting required; controllers are usable out of the box
Compatible with all Android 3.0 and higher tablets/phones with Bluetooth® connectivity
The Nyko tablet controllers are being developed with input from NVIDIA to ensure compatibility with a large library of high-end mobile games optimized for all Tegra-powered devices. These games are available in TegraZone™, NVIDIA's free app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor. NVIDIA's Tegra 3 chipset delivers console quality graphics on mobile devices with the world's only 4-PLUS-1™ quad-core mobile processor, including a 5th battery-saver core.

Nyko has also developed a free Android app, called Playground, to provide backwards compatibility for their controllers with legacy tablet titles, including those that currently utilize keyboard mapping, touch mapping and mouse support. Playground provides profile management for customized control schemes, as well as pre-set profiles for top selling and popular games. Like Nyko's tablet controllers, the app will not require rooting of the device.

Microsoft: Xbox is now the top-selling console worldwide

Before Microsoft had even set off any of its gaming fireworks, Don Mattrick took to the stage to tell us that its Xbox had now graduated from best-selling console in North America to best selling console in the world. We've already seen that new versions of Halo and Splinter Cell are both incoming -- so it looks unlikely that Microsoft's good run will be ending any time soon.

ASUS enlists BlueStacks to run Android apps on Windows PCs, skips all the OS juggling

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 09:01 AM PDT

ASUS Transformer AiO hands-on

Turns out that you won't have to buy a Transformer AiO and use two whole operating systems to run Android apps on that ASUS Windows PC -- the Taiwan PC builder has struck a deal to run Bluestacks' App Player for key software on the ASUS@Vibe side of its new Open Cloud Computing service. The code layer will give free rein to play games like Fruit Ninja or Defender as well as run more sober titles like Evernote and Pulse. Apps will be available across every type of PC ASUS makes, including Eee PC netbooks and other models without touchscreens, but they won't always be gratis. ASUS is providing free Android apps for just the first six months of service and will be charging an unspecified rate for unlimited access afterwards, so you may want to opt for that Transformer AiO or a PadFone to run mobile apps the old-fashioned way.

ASUS Partners with BlueStacks to Bring Android Apps to Millions of PCs Worldwide

Adds Premium Android Apps to asus@vibe Entertainment Platform on ZenBooks, Notebooks, Eee PCs, Desktop PCs and All-in-one PCs

Taipei, Taiwan (PRWEB) June 03, 2012

ASUS, one of the world's top three consumer notebook vendors and a leading innovator in personal computing products, has partnered with BlueStacks to bring popular Android apps to 30 million Asus PCs worldwide.

BlueStacks, makers of "App Player for PC" software, will enable a rich selection of Android apps on asus@vibe, a one-stop entertainment platform that is preinstalled on all ASUS products. Powered by BlueStacks technology, users of asus@vibe can access exciting and engaging Android apps across all categories including games, social, news, shopping, music, business and education.

BlueStacks recently partnered with top app developers to bring popular Android apps like Fruit Ninja, Evernote, Pulse, Drag Racing, Defender, Tap Fish, Moviefone, Nook, Guns N Glory, Talking Tom and Kids ABC to the one billion strong PC market. BlueStacks' patent pending LayerCake technology enables Android apps on touch and non-touch Windows PCs. As part of this special arrangement with BlueStacks, users of asus@vibe will enjoy Android apps for free for 6 months, with the option to upgrade to unlimited apps and sync apps from phone to PC. The apps are integrated into and presented seamlessly within the @vibe platform across the entire range of ASUS products, including the ZenBooks, notebooks, Eee PCs, desktop PCs and All-in-one PCs.

"ASUS is delighted to bring a vibrant selection of apps that were previously inaccessible on Windows PCs. Our partnership with BlueStacks is a valuable addition to the @vibe family," noted Vira Chang, the Head of eBusiness Services at ASUS. "The integration of BlueStacks and @Vibe is central to ASUS's consumer cloud strategy. Additionally, we are encouraged by the increased revenue potential that BlueStacks represents."

"ASUS has created a phenomenal software experience on PCs. Launching with ASUS at Computex 2012 solidifies BlueStacks' leadership position as the sole provider of apps for consumer electronics and PC manufacturers worldwide," said Rosen Sharma, President and CEO of BlueStacks. "Our strong portfolio of apps from top developers, combined with our unique monetization engine makes this a revenue-generating opportunity for PC OEMs. This is a winning proposition for the entire PC ecosystem. App developers who have already built for Android can now just run their apps on Windows PCs through BlueStacks. We've done the heavy lifting for the benefit of all."

Baidu custom ROM for Nexus S swaps Google's apps for Baidu's own, gets few fans in Mountain View

The Nexus S was supposed to be the definition of Google's perfect phone circa late 2010, so we can't imagine that too many at the Googleplex are enthused with the potential impact of a new custom ROM from Baidu. China's search giant has replaced many of the stock Google apps in Android 4.0 with its own examples, ranging from media players through to navigation. Google will take some consolation from knowing that the firmware can't be pushed out over the air and has to be sideloaded over USB. All the same, with plans from Baidu to expand to other Android 4.0 devices, we can't help but think Google faces a minor Kindle Fire effect where it's cut out from its own ecosystem.

A different shade of Galaxy S III spotted in Germany

While Europeans earnestly wait for their pre-ordered pebble blue superphones to appear, a hands-on video from Germany is purportedly showing us a darker, grayer version of Samsung's Galaxy S III. While the skeptic in us would say it's just a lighting issue, the back cover looks perceptibly different to the blue-hued slab we spent time with during its big reveal. It looks almost monochromatic -- and even shinier, if that's possible. The color borders on gun-metal gray and we have to admit, we're already a little smitten. Samsung's had issues bringing the blueish hue to the masses, so this could turn out to be the new non-white color option. Black and white is a bit played out, so our fingers are crossed that we'll get to have our pebble-colored cake and eat it. Check out the possible new look in a hands-on video after the break -- and bring on the hot pink option.

Origin PC gives EON15-S, EON17-S a Kepler-based GeForce GTX 680M, games get a shot in the arm

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 08:16 AM PDT

Origin PC EON15-S

We hope you didn't pull the trigger too quickly on one of the higher-end configurations for an EON15-S or EON17-S, because Origin PC just revamped its two gaming laptops extraordinaire with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680M -- a chipset so fresh that NVIDIA itself hasn't made a full public reveal just yet. Springing for the upgrade gives them a more miserly, 28-nanometer Kepler-based graphics engine that will no doubt be a bit gentler on battery life and heat than the GTX 675M of old. While it's not shedding full light on NVIDIA's technology, Origin PC's adaptation is known to stuff in a whopping 4GB of video memory as well as 1,344 CUDA (graphics and general-purpose processing) cores, or more than many desktop-level graphics cards. The company hasn't initially said how much it costs to equip NVIDIA's latest, though the previous $197 upgrade to a 675M might just be a clue as to how much of a premium you'll need to pay for a speed lift in Max Payne 3.

Sony T Series Ultrabook hands-on (video)

Sony just announced US availability for its T Series Ultrabook, and though we'll only get the T13 and not the T11 stateside, this version will ship with third-gen Intel CPUs rather than the European model's Sandy Bridge processors. Here's the Cliff Notes version if you missed the earlier announcement: the 13-incher weighs 3.5 pounds (admittedly a little hefty for an Ultrabook), but its chassis is just 0.71 inches thin. Moreover, the T13 starts at $800, which is pretty dang low in the larger scheme of Ultrabook pricing. We went hands-on with the T13 at the Sony Center this morning -- head past the break for a closer look at Sony's first Ultrabook.

MSI unwraps Slider S20 hybrid tablet with Windows 8 handson

MSI is well-known for showing tablets at Computex -- it even showed what amounts to the same tablets at two different shows. It's certainly shaking things up this year, however, with the Slider S20. We've seen hybrid tablet PCs before, but the Windows 8-toting S20 has a fairly slick tilting mechanism that locks the 11.6-inch touchscreen at an angle, turning the slate into a pseudo-laptop right on the spot. MSI is only willing at this early stage to mention a few key details, but it's promising at least one Slider S20 variant with a properly speedy low-voltage Ivy Bridge chip as well as 4GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI and USB 3.0. Our friends at Engadget Spanish got an early look and found the tablet a bit chunky with a so-so display, but also thought that it looked like a "robust" design. Check our overseas companions' first impressions for more, and know that the Slider S20 is expected to reach Europe in September at €899 ($1,121) in its full Ivy Bridge glory along with a lower-powered model at €799 ($996).

Denon teases new SC2900 DJ controller and media player, hopes to get heads spinning

As the world of digital DJing offers those who spin increasingly individual configurations, there's still a dedicated crowd who like to keep it strictly "ones and twos." Denon hears this, and is hoping to snag some of those faithful with its latest SC2900 DJ media player. From the tease video (after the break) it looks like it's pitting itself against Pioneer's CDJ900 and CDJ2000 models. There's a 7-inch platter (Denon's first without a motor,) jazzed up with LEDs for cue and marker points. This can be used to get hands on with CDs (audio and MP3,) USB drives, music direct from the companion "Engine" software (i.e. hosted on a Mac or PC,) and shared media from other compatible networked players. Other goodies include four hot cues, native support for Traktor (and other) DJ software over MIDI, a "slip mode" made popular by the CDJ900 for keeping tracks in the mix even when scratching, and library browsing via iPad (though we're not sure if it's anything more than that). Pricing and availability should get played out soon, in the meantime you might want to start boning up on those old DMC routines.

Cloudee beta gets Boxee into the video sharing and cloud storage game

Cloudee beta gets Boxee into the video sharing and cloud storage game

Media center software, a streaming set top box and a TV-tuning USB dongle -- Boxee already has a pretty decent amount on its plate. But don't think the company is done just yet. This isn't about products, this about an ecosystem, and the next step in building that out is Cloudee. At its heart Cloudee is a cloud-based video hosting and sharing service, not terribly dissimilar from YouTube at first glance. But, the vision here is more focused and more narrow than simply having a public space to post your viral clips and home movies. There is the ability to comment on and like videos, but sharing is focused on limited groups of contacts, borrowing some inspiration from Google+. After recording a clip it can be uploaded directly to Cloudee where you can organize your creations into collections, which can not only by shared but have multiple contributors. Boxee's Avner Ronen gave us an example of a recent company outing, where the whole staff contributed videos to a collection shared only internally. He explained that, "video is very specific, a special use case and it deserves its own treatment," something he thinks other services have fallen flat on. When asked about the future of the service he only said only that it will be a "big part of the boxee experience going forward, tightly integrated with Boxee Box." We can't help but hope this is the first step towards a cloud-based DVR service, which we felt was sorely missing from the launch of the Live TV dongle.

For now the service is in closed beta, with only an iPhone app available. During the testing period users will be provided with unlimited storage for free, but Ronen hopes to move Cloudee out of beta quickly and begin offering it on a freemium model. All users will get a limited amount of storage for free while more demanding uploaders can purchase unlimited hosting. Just how much free storage will be provided or how much the premium level will cost is still up in the air. Boxee plans to closely watch how testers use the app and decide how the best price and storage points before officially launching and expanding and opening up to other platforms like Android. Once our beta invite arrives we'll be back with a hands-on and you can sign up yourself by heading over to Cloudee.com.

US Cellular announces its Galaxy S III plans, preorders begin June 12, retail availability in July

The flood continues. We knew as of early this morning that regional carrier US Cellular would be carrying the Samsung Galaxy S III, and we now have a few more details to add to our interest. The flagship device will be available for pre-order June 12th and is going to be in stores and online sometime in July. The pricing hasn't been announced yet, but US Cellular mentions that this will be known as soon as the presale begins, and we wouldn't be shocked if it fell right inline with Sprint's price points ($199 for 16GB and $249 for 32GB). Once the purchasing magic begins, you'll have your choice of a 16GB model in Marble White or Pebble Blue, or a 32GB version in only the paler shade. The carrier also plans to start pushing its fledgling LTE network into new areas to support its latest handset coup. For a few more details, most of which will probably sound pretty familiar at this point, check out the PR after the break.

Lenovo U310 and U410 Ultrabooks now available worldwide starting at $749

We're no strangers to Lenovo's new IdeaPads, having seen them at CES, but now the relatively cheap (and chunky) Ultrabooks are available to purchase. Lenovo Unleashes Ultrabooks to Power Next Chapter of Great Ideas

"Book of Do" Global Marketing Campaign Shows IdeaPad U310 and U410 Engines for Creativity and Productivity

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.– JUNE 4, 2012: Marked by the launch of a multi-million dollar global marketing campaign, Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the worldwide availability of its coveted IdeaPad U310 and U410 Ultrabooks. Powered by the 3rd generation Intel® Core™ processors, Lenovo's new U Series Ultrabook™ devices take the era of thin, lightweight and ultra-responsive mobile computing to a new level of affordability, without compromising quality or style. To showcase the benefits and features unique to its new Ultrabooks, Lenovo's multi-faceted, global "Book of Do" advertising campaign highlights how the combination of innovative thinking and IdeaPad Ultrabooks empower people-the world's tinkerers, creators and builders-to make great things happen.

Lenovo Ultrabook devices combine the best features of traditional laptops-powerful processing performance, large storage capacity and rich audio-with the sleek aesthetics and desirable qualities of tablets, such as fast boot up, instant resume and all day battery life. With a svelte, book-inspired design that appeals to the fashion-forward consumer, the new Ultrabooks are available in a variety of vibrant colors including Sapphire Blue, Aqua Blue, Cherry Blossom Pink, Graphite Grey or Metallic Red1. Lenovo is making this progressive technology attainable for consumers with competitive prices starting under $800 (USD).

"Ultrabooks are an industry game changer that shift not only the way people think about laptop design, but also how much performance technology can be packed into such a thin and light device," said Peter Hortensius, president, Product Group, Lenovo. "Lenovo Ultrabooks free people from having to choose between a device with a productivity-focused user experience and one with a style and design that inspire their creativity. The IdeaPad U Series Ultrabooks embody this convergence and are the perfect tool for consumers to manage every aspect of their digital lives."

The Book of Do Campaign
As one of the largest coordinated marketing campaigns in Lenovo's history, "The Book of Do" aims to give consumers, especially teens and young professionals, a glimpse into the exciting and innovative ways the new Ultrabooks can play a role in their digital lives. Spanning TV with the "Seize the Night" ad, and other print and online advertising in major markets including the U.S., U.K., Germany, Russia, China, India and Japan, the "Book of Do" brings to life the people who do behind the device-the musicians, artists, designers, technologists, fashionistas and engineers.

More so, the campaign is designed to reach youth via intersecting technology with their interests. To creatively introduce U.S. college students to the Ultrabooks, Lenovo will give students the opportunity to dash on campus to win their own "Book of Do" at several colleges this fall. Lenovo is also working with DoSomething.org and Microsoft Bing this summer to inspire youth to act in their communities with The Hunt: 11 Days of Doing, starting July 10. Each day, young people will receive clues on service-related tasks to complete to win Lenovo U310 and U410 Ultrabooks and other prizes.

In Japan, Ayako Hara, Miss Universe Japan 2012, is serving as a brand ambassador to highlight the intersection between fashion and technology. Similarly, in India, youth sensation and Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor is touting his Ultrabook to appeal to the cell-phone tapping, social-networking Net Gen audiences.

The Can Do Everything Book of Do – Ultrabooks
As thin as a small paperback book, the 13.3-inch U310 and 14-inch U410 measure only 0.7-inch (18mm) and 0.83-inch (21mm) thick and weigh just 3.74lbs (1.7kg) and 4.18lbs (1.9kg), respectively. Even with a thin and light frame, these Ultrabook devices offer the performance to handle any mobile computing task with 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i3, i5 or i7 processors, up to 1 TB of storage; NVIDIA GeForce® graphics and up to nine hours of battery life on the U410; and 500 GB HDD drive and up to seven hours of battery life on the U310. They also feature Dolby® Home Theatre® v4 for intense sound quality and have Intel® Wireless Display (WiDi) technologyto project videos and other content wirelessly on any big screen.

Available with 32GB solid state drives (SSD) to cache data, Lenovo's latest Ultrabooks put a stop to slow wait times. Thanks to Lenovo's new Enhanced Experience 3 optimization for Windows 7 PCs, the new Ultrabooks achieve ultra-fast boot up and quick resume from sleep that's up to 40 percent faster than non-optimized devices. Lenovo Smart Update further amplifies the user experience by enabling the ultra-brilliant U310 and U410 to automatically update email, IM chats and social media messages even when in sleep mode. Watch the product tour here.
"The IdeaPad U310 and U410 Ultrabooks deliver on the next generation mobile computing experience," said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel's PC Client Group. "Working with Lenovo, we've delivered stunning visuals and amazing performance with our 3rd generation Intel Core processors in exceptionally thin and light designs that meet the needs of today's most demanding mobile users."
To keep doers up and running, Lenovo Ultrabook devices come with a full array of warranty and protection services, whether it's an onsite warranty upgrade, Accidental Damage Protection for when things don't always go right, or a Sealed Battery Warranty to minimize downtime due to battery replacement.

Marvell unveils all-in-one 802.11ac WiFi chip for mobile devices: throws in Bluetooth and NFC

Marvell unveils all-in-one 802.11ac WiFi chip for mobile devices: throws in Bluetooth and NFCLess is more, right? Marvell has announced a new 802.11ac-enabled chip that includes NFC and Bluetooth, all in one. The Avastar 88W8897 is geared at mobile devices and aims to compete with Broadcom's own chipsets, wich are already being sold inside "5G Wi-Fi" routers. Marvell's attempts to cram in those extra connectivity options does, however, make it a more attractive option for phone manufacturers. The dual-stream config will mean its bandwidth peaks at around 900Mbps -- Broadcom's offerings can reach up to 1.3Gps. Marvell humbly suggests that its own chip would also be at home in larger devices, including ultrabooks and tablets. The company also claims that it's up 50 percent smaller than rival chip combinations that offer similar functionality and -- perhaps crucially -- costs 75 percent less. The chip also throws in Location Engine, a WiFi-based feature that works to augment indoor positioning. Consumer products are promised to arrive sometime next year, which should mean plenty of time to map out your home and office in preparation.

TMobile brings Samsung Galaxy S III to stores on June 21st

T-Mobile US isn't letting Verizon bask in the spotlight for too long, as it just announced that June 21st will be the magic date it begins offering the Samsung Galaxy S III in stores. From what we can tell, this particular flavor of the device has seemed to escape a good chunk of carrier influence, with the traditional home button model staying intact. As we've been expecting, the GSIII will come in 16 and 32GB models (price is still an unknown at the moment, though $200 and $250 respectively seems to be the popular choice so far), run on a Snapdragon S4 dual-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz and offer an impressive 2GB RAM. It doesn't appear that T-Mo will be allowing pre-orders through official retail channels, but you can sign up for a reminder by going to the link below. But don't worry if you forget to do that -- we'll keep you posted on all the updates no matter what.

Corning unveils slim, flexible Willow Glass (video)

Corning unveils slim, flexible Willow Glass

That is not plastic in the image above, it's glass. In particular it's a sheet of Corning's new 100-micron-thick Willow Glass, a new ultra-thin and flexible substrate for LCDs and OLEDs. The extreme thinness of the glass should lead to lighter, svelter devices, but it also means that shape is no longer a barrier for design. In fact, Corning expects Willow Glass will eventually lead substrates to be manufactured "roll-to-roll" instead of "sheet-to-sheet" -- similar to how newspapers are printed. Even though the glass as thin as paper (literally) it doesn't give up its patented Corning toughness. Though, we wouldn't subject this to the same sort of abuse that the more brolic Gorilla Glass is built to withstand. Willow will start showing up in smartphones first, but the company is already looking into additional applications, such as solar cells and lighting. For more, check out the video and PR after the break.

Corning Launches Ultra-Slim Flexible Glass

Corning® Willow™ Glass will help enable new, thinner applications and could revolutionize display manufacturing

CORNING, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced the launch of Corning® Willow™ Glass, an ultra-slim flexible glass, which could revolutionize the shape and form of next-generation consumer electronic technologies. The company made the announcement today at the Society for Information Display's Display Week, an industry tradeshow in Boston.

Corning Willow Glass will help enable thin, light and cost-efficient applications including today's slim displays and the smart surfaces of the future. The thinness, strength, and flexibility of the glass has the potential to enable displays to be "wrapped" around a device or structure. As well, Corning Willow Glass can be processed at temperatures up to 500° C. High temperature processing capability is essential for today's high end displays, and is a processing condition that cannot be supported with polymer films. Corning Willow Glass will enable the industry to pursue high-temperature, continuous "roll-to-roll" processes – similar to how newsprint is produced - that have been impossible until now.

It will support thinner backplanes and color filters for both organic light emitting diodes (OLED) and liquid crystal displays (LCD) in high performance, portable devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebook computers. This new, ultra-slim flexible glass will also help develop conformable (curved) displays for immersive viewing or mounting on non-flat surfaces.

Corning Willow Glass is formulated to perform exceptionally well for electronic components such as touch sensors, as well as leveraging glass's natural hermetic properties as a seal for OLED displays and other moisture and oxygen-sensitive technologies.

"Displays become more pervasive each day and manufacturers strive to make both portable devices and larger displays thinner. Corning Willow Glass provides the substrate performance to maintain device quality in a thin and light form factor," said Dr. Dipak Chowdhury, division vice president and Willow Glass program director. "Currently manufacturing in a sheet-to-sheet process, we expect Corning Willow Glass to eventually allow customers to switch to high throughput, efficient roll-to-roll processing, a long-awaited industry milestone."

Like Corning's other leading-edge glass substrates, including EAGLE XG® Slim and Corning LotusTM Glass, Corning Willow Glass is produced using the company's proprietary fusion process. Advances in fusion forming have made it possible to produce glass that is 100 microns thick – about the thickness of a sheet of copy paper. Even at that thickness, it provides hermetic sealing to sensitive components, while also providing excellent optical, thermal, and surface properties.

Corning is currently shipping samples of its Willow Glass to customers developing new display and touch applications. The company is also collaborating with research institutions, customers, and equipment makers to develop an ecosystem of compatible process equipment, including optimized process design.

Although initially being launched as an advanced display substrate, Corning is actively working on other potential applications for its Willow Glass, including use in lighting and flexible solar cells.

"Corning will continue to develop and improve innovative glass products to enable the high-performance, game-changing displays that will drive tomorrow's increasingly diverse electronics markets," Chowdhury said.

ASUS shows off its Open Cloud Computing with a dash of scifi, teen angst video

ASUS has been touting Open Cloud Computing as the glue that unites its new devices at Computex, but it hasn't been very specific as to what that meant. Rather than just give us the dry details, though, ASUS has chosen to sum it all up in a slightly surreal video illustrating how its cloud solves the travails of friends and family. Web storage comes up often for sharing files across the Internet -- apparently, by reaching through clouds -- and is joined by Open Help for sorting out frustrated parents, Open Link for helping woe-is-me teenagers finish high school projects on their Padfones, Vibe for sharing media and Waveface for coordinating a thank you event with everyone. Apart from being a bit trippy, the promo has more than a small dose of science fiction: although we've seen some future product concepts from ASUS before, we're pretty sure there's no holographic watches and virtual assistants on the short-term roadmap. If you can reconcile that with practical reality, you'll be ready for the video after the story jump.

Verizon takes Samsung Galaxy S III pre-orders June 6th, starting at $200

Verizon Galaxy S III teaser

Samsung confirmed the initial US carriers for the Galaxy S III, and we're now getting the deluge of details from the carriers themselves. Verizon is first at bat and will start taking your pre-orders on June 6th at 7AM ET. The company is coy on the actual ship date, but it'll ask $200 for a 16GB version on a contract, and a slightly higher $250 if you really need 32GB from the very start. Its edition is a dead ringer in looks for the international model outside of the "4G LTE" stamp, but it carries both the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 and 2GB of RAM as the Canadian models. You can take a peek at the full details first-hand after the break.

The Theory uses tiny MicroVision projector to concoct even tinier police chase (video)

the-theory-microvision-projector-police-chase-film

Looking like the ghost of Hot Wheels fantasies past, a new video short has beamed out of the minds at The Theory -- a production team that just happens to have a MicroVision pico projector. Called "Speed of Light", the mixed media film was made by projecting shots onto walls, floors and objects like laptops and then filming it with "no CGI trickery" added later, according to the team. Featuring a miniature Ford GT chased by a police car, helicopters, missiles and explosions, the pursuit was filmed with a Canon 5D MkII and HD MiniCam. To see if the little crook gets away with it, peel out to the video after the break.

Sony's multimedia-centric VAIO F gets folded into new 15-inch VAIO S 15

Sony's multimedia-centric VAIO F gets folded into new 15-inch VAIO S 15

Sony is using its latest product announcement to trim the fat off of its line-up, and one of the casualties will be its multimedia-centric VAIO F Series. Of course, the company won't be ditching entertainment laptops altogether -- it's just consolidating the VAIO F line into the VAIO S Series, specifically the VAIO S 15. To further confuse the switch-up, the VAIO SE (that's E for entertainment) is also being folded into the new S 15. Identity confusion aside, what you get here is a 15.5-inch, 1080p IPS display, NVIDIA graphics with up to 2GB of VRAM and various Ivy Bridge processor options (up to a quad-core Core i7 CPU). The 15-inch S Series will start at $1,000 and will be available in black and silver. Sony says it's good for light gaming, and especially media streaming and programs like AutoCAD. Like the other new VAIO systems, the S 15 will be available this month. Check out the gallery and press info below.

Sony announces new VAIO L all-in-one with Ivy Bridge, thinner design

Along with refreshing its various VAIO laptop lines, Sony is updating its L Series all-in-one. The new L24 has -- surprise! -- a 24-inch display with the same X-Reality chip used in Sony's Bravia televisions. This time around, the company went with an edge-to-edge design for the multitouch display, and picture-in-picture for juggling TV watching and actual work. As you can imagine, that multitouch screen will come in handy once Windows 8 gets the green light from Microsoft. Other changes include a slot DVD rather than a tray-loading one, and thinner dimensions for the PC, mouse and keyboard. The base $1,299 configuration comes with a Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor, and a glasses-free 3D version will be available for $1,999 later this summer. For storage, you get a 1, 2 or 3TB drive, and Sony says there will also be NVIDIA graphics options. Intrigued? We've got photos and the full PR below.

Sony unveils VAIO S13 and S13p laptops with Ivy Bridge, prices start at $900

DNP EMBARGO Sony unveils VAIO S13 laptop with Ivy Bridge, prices start at $899

In addition to all the other new laptops it announced today, Sony refreshed its mid-range S Series with a new look, and consolidated its two 13-inch models, the SA and SB lines, into one model, now called the VAIO S13. (There's also a more business-oriented version called the S13p, which we'll tell you about in just a moment). Thanks to a magnesium, aluminum and carbon fiber construction, it's fairly lightweight, at 3.8 pounds. Spec-wise, Sony went with Core i5 and i7 Ivy Bridge processors, though this time around, it's missing switchable graphics -- at least on the S13. That machine now has integrated graphics only, though the business-centric S13p will be offered with an NVIDIA GPU with up to 2GB of VRAM. The S13p also sets itself apart with features the IT guy might appreciate, including TPM, a fingerprint reader and a hard drive accelerometer.

Across the board, the S13 should last up to about seven hours on a charge, or 14 if you add an optional sheet battery. Also, the company will sell an external docking station with a built-in 500GB hard drive and built-in battery -- a first for Sony. We're told the dock will cost $189, and that you can use it even with the sheet battery attached to the laptop. The S13 and S13p will go on sale this month, starting at $900 and $1,200, respectively. Though the more consumer-friendly S13 will be available in black, silver white and pink, the buttoned-up S13p comes in a more staid palette: black, gold and "Gun Metal."
