Hulu adds Kids section for little streamers, updates PS3 app with renewed remote support Posted: 08 Nov 2012 10:29 AM PST Whether you have streaming-savvy children, or are just a big kid yourself, Hulu has added a new section to its bulging catalogue specifically for you. Hulu Kids puts all the ad-free shows available to Plus subscribers in one place, and splits them into categories for filtering, say, only dinosaur-related programs. The section has its own website, or can now be accessed through the obvious option in the Browse menu. PS3 owners will be happy to know the Hulu Plus app has been updated, too, bringing back the Blu-Ray remote functionality that was, for some wacky reason, removed in the last update. And, what better way is there to relax after a humiliating public defeat than dropping the controller, and taking in a calming dose of SpongeBob? |
AT&T: HTC Windows Phone 8X available in stores tomorrow Posted: 08 Nov 2012 09:57 AM PST The pricing was already known, but the only information we were given on availability was sometime before Thanksgiving. Now, the picture is a little clearer -- and nearer -- because AT&T has finally announced that the HTC Windows Phone 8X will be in stores and online starting tomorrow (November 9th) in both California Blue and Limelight. The 8GB model will offer the two color options and is still slated to start at $100, but the 16GB version will only have one hue -- California Blue -- and can be yours for $200. Earlier this week we announced pricing for the Windows Phone 8X by HTC with two different memory options for customers – 16 GB of memory in California Blue for $199.99 and an AT&T-exclusive 8 GB of memory version in California Blue and Limelight (yellow) for $99.99. If you watched track and field events in the Olympics this summer, you saw how distinctive these electric yellow hues can be. We are the only carrier to offer the device in this eye-catching Limelight hue. Just in time for the holiday shopping season, we're excited to announce that all three models will be available for purchase beginning Nov. 9 in AT&T stores and online at www.att.com. You can order them all starting Nov. 9, with 8 GB Limelight and 16 GB California Blue shipping next week. The Windows Phone 8X by HTC has a stunning 4.3-inch 720p HD display (1280 x 720 pixels) and an outstanding camera. The 2.1-megapixel, 88 degree, ultra-wide front-facing camera can capture self-portraits of you and the faces of up to four friends all at once. The 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture takes great photos and videos – even in low light. It's the first-ever Windows Phone 8 smartphone with built-in Beats Audio™ technology, so your music sounds even better with authentic, studio-quality sound. HTC also added a unique audio amplifier that powers the 3.5mm audio jack and speaker to provide improved sound for music, video and even gaming. This smartphone is one you won't want to miss so be sure to check it out on Nov.9 and visit www.att.com/8xbyhtc for more information. |
Melotweet: Evian makes Twitter musical, encourages you to buy water (video) Posted: 08 Nov 2012 09:31 AM PST We do love quirky iPad apps that help us make music in unusual ways, and this is the first we've seen that turns Twitter into part of that process. Melotweet is a promotional app from Evian*, that turns your Tweets into a series of droplets that you can bounce off objects to make the sort of plinky-plonky music that compels you into buying French mineral water. It's available for free on iOS or Android devices, and you can see the app in action in the video we've got for you after the break. * Other waters are available. |
Posted: 08 Nov 2012 09:07 AM PST Verizon's had a couple days to mull over its response to AT&T's Windows Phone 8 pricing, and it's now ready to make its intentions known: the Nokia Lumia 822 and HTC Windows Phone 8X will both be available for pre-order beginning tomorrow and will officially be on store shelves before Thanksgiving. Nokia's model can be yours in white, black and grey for $100 after $50 mail-in rebate, while HTC's WP8 flagship will be offered in blue, red or black for $200. (Verizon also confirmed that red and black will be carrier-exclusive.) Big Red also confirmed that the ATIV S Odyssey will arrive before the end of the year, but no pricing or dates were offered. UPDATE: The Windows Phone 8X by HTC and the Nokia Lumia 822 will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow, November 9, at 1am ET. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to mobile operating systems (OS) and the announcement by Microsoft of Windows Phone 8 will soon give customers another choice when shopping for a new Verizon Wireless smartphone. This new OS brings new features to explore and new ways to further personalize your smartphone. Windows Phone 8 will debut on a number of new smartphones, which means you never need to relearn the OS when moving from one smartphone to another. The Start screen is always the most personal screen and Live Tiles on Windows Phone 8 makes that personalization possible. Live Tiles let you create a Start screen that's exactly right for you by letting you not only pin apps but also people, bookmarks and more all on one screen to view at a glance. The Live Tiles and Apps pinned on the Start screen animate and update as notifications come in so you see which apps are calling for your attention. The tunes that you rock out to and the games that keep you busy go where you go with Xbox Music and Xbox Games. All of this together is what makes the phone, you. Managing data use on a Windows Phone 8 from Verizon Wireless is just as simple and helps relieve the stress of data use. The Data Sense app, exclusive for a limited time, tells you how much data you have used in a given time period. It also allows you to set data limits and even reports how much data each app has used. Data Sense doesn't stop there, as it has a suite of features like Wi-Fi mapping to find hotspots and compressing images and HTML while browsing the Web to help reduce data usage. Work and play don't need to be separated with Windows Phone 8. Having Microsoft Office Mobile built-in means using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote from your phone to create, edit and view documents. Windows Phone 8 takes the mobile office farther with SkyDrive integration, including 7 GB of free space, for storing pictures, files and data on the cloud and built-in support for Office 365 for email and SharePoint access. A brand new OS needs a powerful network to run on, and with 4G LTE coverage in more than 410 markets across the United States, Windows Phone 8 customers will be browsing and streaming at blazing speeds. That same Verizon Wireless advantage also includes access to the exclusive apps like VZ Navigator for turn-by-turn navigation and maps with millions points of interest, Backup Assistant Plus to store your contacts and sports apps including one for football aficionado. Verizon Wireless will soon have three 4G LTE smartphones running Windows Phone 8, two of which will be available in the coming weeks. -Windows Phone 8X by HTC – available by Thanksgiving in Blue, Red or Black color models for $199.99 with a new two year contract. The Red and Black color models are Verizon Wireless exclusives. |
Humble Bundle introduces Sword & Sworcery to Android, packed with five other games Posted: 08 Nov 2012 09:01 AM PST Are you tired of your antagonistic friend Kevin berating you for not having played Capybara and Jim Guthrie collaboration Sword & Sworcery? "You've never played Sword & Sworcery? Dude, you should probably play Sword & Sworcery," he says, in his mocking tone. Well enough of that -- today is your first chance to snag Sword & Sworcery on your Android device for a potentially very low price. That price, of course, is up to you, as Sword & Sworcery is just one of six excellent games included in the fourth Humble Android Bundle, which launches today. Paying any amount nets you not just Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery EP, but also Waking Mars, Eufloria, Crayon Physics Deluxe, and Splice. Paying over the (variable) average amount will also get you a copy of (gorgeous) adventurer Machinarium. Beyond just Android, you'll also get copies on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux (pay $1 or more and you'll even get Steam keys for each game) -- it's a pretty great deal. Even better? That money goes to charity! Just think how good that'll feel to rub in that jerk Kevin's face. |
Baseline Modbook Pro gets its RAM, storage and touchscreen sensitivity doubled, stays at $3,500 Posted: 08 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST The first batch of Modbook Pros have yet to make their way to owners, but the base model is already getting a spec bump. The Macbook come tablet will have its RAM boosted from 4GB to 8GB and its solid state drive roughly doubled in capacity to 120GB. As for the Wacom-built touchscreen, a total of 1,024 pressure levels will make it twice as sensitive as previously planned. What's the cause for the sudden volley of upgrades? Turns out the folks at Modbook Inc. managed to get a sweeter deal on parts from manufacturers and had the financial wiggle room to include better hardware. One thing that hasn't changed on the Modbook Pro, however, is its price: the tablet will still withdraw $3,500 from pockets. Those who've already pre-ordered one of the devices will get the upgrades at no additional cost when the slates ship later this month. MODBOOK PRO GETS DOUBLE THE PEN PRESSURE, SOLID- STATE DRIVE AND MEMORY Pen Pressure Levels on Modbook Pro Increased from 512 to 1,024 - Base Configuration of Modbook Pro's Solid-State Drive Increased from 64GB to 120GB and Memory Increased from 4GB to 8GB - No Change in Price LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (November 8, 2012) - Creative technologies developer Modbook Inc. today announced it is doubling the pen pressure sensitivity levels on the Modbook® Pro, the company's one-of-a-kind Mac®-based pen tablet computer for the creative community. The solid- state drive (SSD) capacity and random-access memory (RAM) in the base configuration of the Modbook Pro are also being doubled. This substantial improvement in the Modbook Pro's specifications comes at no additional cost to customers - the manufacturer's suggested retail price of the Modbook Pro remains unchanged at $3,499. Beginning immediately, the pen pressure sensitivity levels on the Modbook Pro, whose pen tablet functionality is powered by a state-of-the-art digitizer from industry leader Wacom®, are being doubled from 512 to 1,024, four times the industry standard for tablet computers. Additionally, the internal SSD in the Modbook Pro's base configuration goes from a 64GB NisharaTM-class drive to a 120GB SansharaTM-class high- performance drive. Also, the amount of RAM in the Modbook Pro's base configuration goes from 4GB to 8GB. "The successful launch of the Modbook Pro has allowed us to secure more favorable terms for some of our components, and we're happy to pass the benefit along to our customers. In cooperation with our friends at Wacom, we're especially thrilled to be able to double the Modbook Pro's pen sensitivity to 1,024 pressure levels," said Andreas E. Haas, chief executive officer and chief technology officer of Modbook Inc. "The Modbook Pro is without question the best portable tablet solution for creative users, and even the base configuration crushes the competition." The Modbook Pro ships later this month, so the improved specifications will apply to all currently ordered Modbook Pros as well as all future orders. As demonstrated in the new product comparison grid available at http://www.modbook.com/modbookpro-compare, the specifications of the Modbook Pro are superior to comparable pen tablet computers. The Modbook Pro is now available to order for U.S. customers** exclusively at ModbookShop.com. Customers can use the dynamic product configurator at http://www.modbookshop.com to customize their Modbook Pro's processor (up to 2.9GHz Intel® CoreTM i7), RAM (up to 16GB) and internal storage (up to a 480GB SSD), along with other configuration and accessory options. Increased Pen Pressure Sensitivity With 1,024 pen pressure levels, the Modbook Pro offers four times the sensitivity of the industry standard of 256 levels employed by the other tablet computers on the market. Improved SSD and Memory Specifications Now all available SSD configurations for the Modbook Pro are Sanshara drives offering the same uncompromising best-in-class performance across the line. The Modbook Pro has two internal storage upgrade options: a 240GB or 480GB Sanshara synchronous SATA 3 SSD. Modbook Inc.'s Sanshara drives provide outstanding performance and reliability. The live system of the Modbook Pro operates without any moving parts (aside from its optical drive), markedly decreasing the chances for data corruption or loss. In addition, the Modbook Pro's SSDs are fine-tuned so as not to interfere with its pen tablet interface. Also at no additional cost, the Modbook Pro will now have 8GB of RAM in its base configuration, doubling the previous specification. Optionally, customers can configure their Modbook Pro with 16GB of EnergySaverTM dual-channel RAM, offering lower power consumption and increased battery life. All Modbook Pros currently on order and all future orders will have 1,024 levels of pen pressure sensitivity (twice the previous specification). For existing orders with a 64GB SSD, customers will receive a Modbook Pro with a 120GB SSD at no additional cost. For existing orders with 4GB of RAM, customers will receive a Modbook Pro with 8GB of RAM at no additional cost. Customers who ordered the 8GB Modbook Pro EnergySaver dual-channel memory kit can either upgrade to the 16GB option or switch to the 8GB default RAM configuration and have the charge for the 8GB EnergySaver RAM credited to their order. Additional information about the Modbook Pro is available at http://www.modbook.com. |
LaCie PetiteKey USB flash drive: slim and discreet, for files of the private variety Posted: 08 Nov 2012 08:29 AM PST What if the key to your home continued to get smaller and smaller? Would that be something you'd cheer or loathe? Thankfully, that's not the question we're posing today -- instead, we're wondering if you'd enjoy a key-like flash drive that's smaller than its predecessor. LaCie's new PetiteKey sort of gives itself away right in the title, being even tinier than the iamaKey that shipped in March of 2009. In fact, it's some 30 percent smaller, and ships with a Wuala Secure Cloud Storage account as well. The unit itself is waterproof up to 100 meters, and LaCie claims that your sultry love letters will be protected "even if dropped in a mud puddle or put through the washing machine." Sadly, the unit only transfers at USB 2.0 speeds, but can be had soon in 8/16/32GB capacities starting at $14.99. Mildly related video can be found after the break. |
Google Free Zone comes to the Philippines: access Google+, Gmail and Google Search without charge Posted: 08 Nov 2012 08:01 AM PST Luckily for some, Google has thing for dishing out free internet, which is probably why it's teamed up with Filipino carrier Globe to test out complimentary access to its services. Available now, Free Zone allows any internet-enabled phone to access Gmail, Google+ or Google Search without even having a data plan. Intended mainly for feature phones, you can even load up pages from those search results without paying a dime -- or should we say, peso. There's no usage cap, but clicking through to subsequent pages, accessing Gmail attachments, or opening links from within Google+ will incur charges, but you'll be prompted to accept them or sign up for a plan before that happens. The Philippines is the first market to try out Free Zone, but the wider scheme is "aimed at the next billion users of the internet, many of whom will be in emerging markets." Yeah, the catch is that you'll be exposed to some advertising while you're using it -- but there's no such thing as a free search, right? |
MIT ear-powered wireless sensor sustains its charge through sound Posted: 08 Nov 2012 07:29 AM PST You wouldn't immediately think of the ear's cochlea as an energy source, but MIT knows that every mammal effectively has a pair of very small power plants because of the ionized environment. School researchers are trying to harness that energy through a new sensor that exploits the whole ear canal system. As eardrum vibrations naturally create a usable voltage from brain signals, the prototype can build enough charge in a capacitor to drive a very low-power wireless transmitter that relays the electrochemical properties of the ear and potentially diagnoses balance or hearing problems. The beauty of the system is its true self-sustainability: once the transmitter has been been jumpstarted with radio waves, it powers itself through the resulting transmissions. Energy use is also sufficiently miserly that the sensor doesn't interrupt hearing. Work is still early enough that there's a long way to go before such implants are part of any treatments, but there's hope that future chip iterations could help fix inner ear maladies, not just report on them. Something tells us, however, that the doctor won't ask us to take two dubstep tracks and call back in the morning. |
Cray unleashes 100 petaflop XC30 supercomputer with up to a million Intel Xeon cores Posted: 08 Nov 2012 06:58 AM PST Cray has just fired a nuclear salvo in the supercomputer wars with the launch of its XC30, a 100 petaflop-capable brute that can scale up to one million cores. Developed in conjunction with DARPA, the Cascade-codenamed system uses a new type of architecture called Aries interconnect and Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors to easily leapfrog its recent Titan sibling, the previous speed champ. That puts Cray well ahead of rivals like China's Tianhe-2, and the company will aim to keep that edge by supercharging future versions with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors and NVIDIA Tesla GPUs. High-end research centers have placed $100 million worth of orders so far (though oddly, DARPA isn't one of them yet), and units are already shipping in limited numbers -- likely by the eighteen-wheeler-full, from the looks of it. Cray Unveils the Cray XC30 Supercomputer -- the Next Generation of Its High-End Supercomputing Systems The Cray XC30 combines the new Aries interconnect, Intel® Xeon® processors, Cray's powerful and fully-integrated software environment, and innovative power and cooling technologies to create a production supercomputer that is designed to scale high performance computing (HPC) workloads of more than 100 petaflops. "After several years of incredibly hard work focused on completing the most ambitious R&D program in our company's history, today's unveiling of the Cray XC30 supercomputer is an exciting moment for Cray employees and our customers who have been eagerly anticipating what is an amazing new system," said Peter Ungaro, president and CEO of Cray. "As a follow on to our most successful, productive line of supercomputers, the Cray XC30 is the realization of our Adaptive Supercomputing vision and will provide researchers, scientists and engineers with a system that can adapt to fit their most demanding applications. We're off to a great start with more than $100 million in contracts for this system, and we believe the Cray XC30 series of supercomputers will allow a broader base of users to leverage the world's most advanced supercomputing technology." Several leading HPC centers have signed contracts to purchase Cray XC30 supercomputers, including: The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano, Switzerland The first customer to sign a Cray XC30 contract was HLRS in Stuttgart back in 2010. "The Cray XC30 system will be a valuable supercomputing resource for our researchers and scientists, as well as for our industrial partners in the automotive and aerospace industries," said Prof. Dr. Michael Resch, director of HLRS. "We have worked closely with Cray over the years to ensure our users are equipped with innovative supercomputing systems that are built with leading-edge supercomputing technology, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Cray XC30." The first in a family of products that will span from technical enterprise computing to the largest systems in the world, the Cray XC30 supercomputer has been engineered to meet the real-world performance challenges of HPC users. Cray's new high-end system features the new HPC-optimized Aries system interconnect; a new Dragonfly topology that frees applications from locality constraints; an innovative cooling system that utilizes a transverse airflow to lower customers' total cost of ownership; the next-generation of the scalable, high performance Cray Linux Environment that also supports a wide range of ISV applications; Cray's HPC optimized programming environment; and the ability to handle a wide variety of processor types including the Intel® Xeon® processors -- a first for Cray's high-end systems. "Today's launch of the new Cray XC30 supercomputer is an exciting moment for Cray, Intel and more importantly, the vast HPC user community, which will be able to take advantage of the computational resources of Cray supercomputers powered by Intel® Xeon® E5 processors and Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessors and supported by Intel's investments in fabric," said Raj Hazra, Intel VP and general manager of Technical Computing Group. "The Cray XC30 system is specifically designed to deliver sustained performance and scalability, providing researchers and scientists with a powerful, reliable and productive tool for achieving breakthrough innovations and discoveries." The Cray XC30 will utilize the Intel® Xeon® processors E5-2600 product family and with these Intel processors, Cray XC30 systems can scale in excess of one million cores. Additionally, future versions of the Cray XC family of supercomputers will be available with the new Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessors and NVIDIA® Tesla® GPUs based on the next-generation NVIDIA Kepler™ GPU computing architecture. With these accelerator and coprocessor options, Cray customers will be able to customize a Cray XC supercomputer with the innovative processor technologies that best meets the HPC needs of their scientific applications. Early shipments of the Cray XC30 are starting now, and systems are expected to be widely available in first quarter of 2013. "Cray is a leader in the high-end of the supercomputing industry, and the Cray XC30 system promises to continue the Company's strong standing in the market for designing, building and installing leadership-class supercomputers, such as the 'Titan' system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the 'Blue Waters' supercomputer at the University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications," said Earl Joseph, IDC program vice president for HPC. "The Cray XC30 supercomputer also advances Cray's Adaptive Supercomputing vision, which aims to boost application performance for their customers by exploiting hybrid processing." The Cray XC30 supercomputer is made possible in part by Cray's participation in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) High Productivity Computing Systems program. Additional information on the Cray XC30 supercomputer, including product collateral, technical details and a Cray XC30 networking whitepaper can be found on Cray XC30 system page on the Cray website. Potentially inhabitable super-Earth discovered in 6 planet solar system Posted: 08 Nov 2012 06:27 AM PST When we do eventually reduce the Earth to an uninhabitable wasteland through our careless consumption of natural resources and inevitable nuclear wars, we'll need someplace else to go. We haven't picked a successor yet, but a new candidate has been identified a mere 44 light years away, orbiting dwarf star HD 40307. The super-Earth orbits its host star right at the edge of the so-called habitable zone, where a stable atmosphere and liquid water are possible. We don't know for sure the planet is, in fact, capable of supporting life, but there's at least a chance. And given that it's roughly seven-times the mass of Earth, it shouldn't have much trouble playing host to our exploding population. |

That's an affirmative on BlackBerry 10 security certification, sir Posted: 08 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST RIM may be falling out of favor with certain government departments, but it's not removing the earpiece or pocketing the shades just yet. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has granted the BlackBerry 10 platform FIPS 140-2 certification, which basically means data security and encryption are top notch throughout. All you need to know is government agencies, and others with confidential info, can brandish BB10 handsets without worry when they launch early next year. Another piece of good news for Obama -- we're pretty sure he's due for an upgrade about now. BlackBerry 10 Receives FIPS Security Certification Ahead of Launch Waterloo, ON – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM, TSX: RIM) today announced that the BlackBerry® 10 platform is now FIPS 140-2 certified. The certification will enable government agencies to deploy BlackBerry® 10 smartphones and BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10, RIM's new mobile enterprise management solution, from the day of launch. This is the first time BlackBerry products have been FIPS certified ahead of launch. FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification provides confidence to security-conscious organizations, including U.S. and Canadian government agencies, companies in regulated industries and other organizations dealing with sensitive information, that data stored on smartphones running BlackBerry 10 can be properly secured and encrypted. "Achieving FIPS 140-2 certification means that BlackBerry 10 is ready to meet the strict security requirements of government agencies and enterprises at launch," said Michael K. Brown, Vice President, Security Product Management and Research at RIM. "What differentiates BlackBerry is that it integrates end-to-end security, and includes certified encryption algorithms for data at rest and data in transit. No other mobile solution has achieved the level of security accreditation that the BlackBerry solution has." FIPS 140 is issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to coordinate the requirements and standards for certifying cryptographic modules. The standard was developed through the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP), which certifies products for use by U.S. government agencies and regulated industries that collect, store, transfer, share and disseminate sensitive information. Product certifications under the CMVP are performed in accordance with the requirements of FIPS 140-2. It is supported by the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) for the Canadian government. "IDC expects the mobile enterprise security market to experience a high rate of growth from 2012 to 2016," said Stacy Crook, Program Manager for Mobile Enterprise research at IDC. "Maintaining the BlackBerry solution's reputation for security while introducing an enhanced user experience gives BlackBerry 10 the opportunity to be a highly competitive platform in the government, enterprise and consumer sectors." BlackBerry products and solutions are protected by best-in-class AES 256-bit encryption, a highly secure, internationally recognized data protection standard. In addition to FIPS certifications, BlackBerry products have continuously passed rigorous security assessments from a variety of other independent organizations around the world. The BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution is the first mobile platform to achieve Common Criteria Certification, a standard recognized by 26 countries, as well as the first to receive approval through the CESG Assisted Product Scheme (CAPS), the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance in the United Kingdom. BlackBerry® 7 smartphones meet Common Criteria security assurance level EAL 4+. The BlackBerry® PlayBook™ is the first FIPS certified tablet for deployment within U.S. federal government agencies and certified for use by the Defence Signals Directorate of the Australian Government. "Achieving FIPS certification for an entirely new platform in a very short period of time, and before launch, is quite remarkable and a testament to the dedication of our security team," said David MacFarlane, Director, Security Certifications at RIM. "BlackBerry 10 will deliver security, a superior user experience, the ability to separately manage corporate and personal data on the same device, and ease of manageability for IT managers in an enterprise or government environment." For more information about security and the BlackBerry platform visit www.blackberry.com/security. |
GroupMe moves up to v4.0, embraces the iPad Posted: 08 Nov 2012 04:29 AM PST Group messaging service GroupMe has just been bumped up to version 4.0, and now plays well with the iPad. The refresh may not be as profound as the last big one, but brings with it a slew of design revamps, including Facebook app-inspired side drawers, bigger images and avatars, and centered chats. In addition, the app also allows sharing location using maps, inviting people to groups using URLs and rejoining previously abandoned groups. BlackBerry and Windows Phone users of the app can't board the freshly-painted bus just yet as the update is only available on iOS for now, while those on Android can get a taste via a beta that needs to be sideloaded atop the older version. There are other services vying for your attention too of course, with WP8's Rooms already open and RIM promising big things on BB10. However, if this sounds like what you covet, use the source links below to get in on the action. |
Meridian launches indoor GPS SDK, Macy's first to launch with it embedded Posted: 08 Nov 2012 04:00 AM PST Meridian's indoor GPS technology has been the sole preserve of companies prepared to build their apps from inside Meridian's custom editor. Now, however, it's opened up the platform, introducing a pair of SDKs that let use anyone use its coveted Nav Kit and Blue Dot know-how to help people get around cavernous public spaces. Tested in locations like Miami Children's Hospital, Sydney Airport and Macy's, users will be able to get turn-by-turn directions to help them find their gate, offspring or this season's must-have look -- with the latter the first to launch a mobile app built with the technology. Macy's First to Launch Indoor GPS for iPhone with Meridian SDK Startup Solves Indoor Positioning and Navigation for both iOS and Android PORTLAND, Ore. – Under Embargo Until 8:00 a.m. Eastern Nov. 8, 2012 – In July 2010, the American Museum of Natural History was the first venue in the world to launch an iPhone app with an "indoor GPS" experience. Meridian, the mobile-software company behind the coveted "glowing blue dot" on the indoor map, today announced they're offering this same indoor-navigation technology to other app developers. Previously, the indoor-positioning experience provided by Meridian has been available only to customers building apps from the ground up with Meridian's proprietary content management system, the Meridian Editor. Staring today, third-party developers can use Meridian's newly available software development kits (SDKs) to implement Meridian's turn-by-turn directions tools and patent-pending capabilities to achieve an indoor-GPS-like experience into new or currently available apps. The two SDKs available today, called NavKit and BluDotKit, have been privately beta-tested and shaped by customers in three of the most demanding industries: hospitals (Miami Children's Hospital), airports (Sydney Airport) and retail (Macy's flagship store, Herald Square). These three large enterprises, which each had existing apps in need of turn-by-turn directions and an "indoor GPS" experience, will be updating their apps with Meridian's SDKs in the coming weeks. "Miami Children's Hospital was ahead of the curve in the healthcare industry by launching an iPhone app early on," said Jason Shavelson, manager of web and software development at Miami Children's Hospital. "Now, we are staying ahead of the industry by being the first hospital to select Meridian to add both indoor turn-by-turn directions and the 'blue dot' to an iPhone app." NavKit SDK Overview Location-based businesses that simply want to add Meridian's turn-by-turn directions – found in apps for a large variety of locations from the Venetian in Las Vegas to the Metropolitan Transit Authority Arts in New York City – to their existing apps can license Meridian's NavKit SDK. NavKit is intended for locations who not only want turn-by-turn directions for their apps, but also a content management system such as Meridian's for making frequent changes to the mapping, routing and associated branding. NavKit relies on the regular Internet connectivity (cellular or wifi) of a smart phone to stay up to date and does not require any additional hardware installation. BluDotKit SDK Overview Meridian's BluDotKit SDK allows app developers to provide the glowing "blue dot" on the map experience in mobile apps for indoor locations. It does this through a patent-pending approach to utilizing location information provided by a venue's wifi hardware. BluDotKit can be used together with NavKit in order to have both the "blue dot" and turn-by-turn directions, or alone in smaller venues where turn-by-turn directions are not necessary. Because apps using the BluDotKit achieve accurate indoor positioning, enterprises can allow their visitors to opt in to location-based offers and contextual information. The Meridian Difference While there are many vendors offering indoor-positioning experiences for Android, mobile-development experts know this has not yet been widely available for iOS. Meridian's patent-pending and proven solution is the first ever to provide an "indoor GPS" experience for both iOS and Android. And, unlike typical map apps, Meridian offers all customers a content management system that puts control back in the hands of the location-based businesses. These retailers, hospitals, airports and other locations (ranging from simple to complex) want to make frequent changes to their apps' mapping, turn-by-turn directions and the associated branding. As layouts of buildings change, location-based businesses know that having the ability to quickly and easily modify a location-based app is crucial. Meridian's Developer Ecosystem Meridian has an ecosystem of mobile-app developers with the technical abilities to deploy the developer tools for interested customers. Those locations that want the power of the SDKs for indoor navigation, yet do not have developers (e.g., Objective-C and Java) on staff to deploy them, can contact Meridian for recommendations on developer partners eager to assist with app development. Greg Raiz is the CEO of Raizlabs, a development partner who has integrated Meridian's SDK into apps. "Our company, Raizlabs, has worked on a number of location based projects but this is the first time we're able to track location indoors in real-time," said Raiz. "We were excited to be the first integrator of the Meridian NavKit and BluDotKit SDK's that gave us this capability. As more retailers realize the benefits of indoor location I see this trend continuing. Meridian has been a great partner and we look forward to re-shaping the way we navigate together." According to Dr. Bruce Krulwich, research analyst for Grizzly Analytics, "Indoor location technology has been slow in coming to market, despite dozens of companies working on it, because of technical limitations that prevent it from running on iPhones. Meridian's network-centric approach is the first to run as well on iPhone as on Android. It gives site managers more information about which areas of the site their customers are interested in. This information is invaluable as sites try harder to understand their customers and how to serve them better." Availability and Pricing Developers can sign up for the public beta of the BluDotKit and NavKit SDKs here: TBD. Developers currently working on apps on behalf of locations will be given priority access in an effort to assist those under deadlines. The BluDotKit and NavKit SDKs are included free of charge with a paid license to Meridian's content management system. Please contact sales@meridianapps.com for more information. Screenshots of the turn-by-turn directions and "blue dot" that can be created with the NavKit and BluDotKit SDKs can be found at: http://cl.ly/3F29121w333g |
Starbucks begins offering Square Wallet purchases from today Posted: 08 Nov 2012 03:31 AM PST While you probably won't be able to get Jack Dorsey to buy you a grande spearmint green tea the next time you go for coffee (we should know, we've tried), you can at least use his payment service. Yes, today's the day that Starbucks begins accepting Square Wallet purchases at 7,000 of its stores -- just scan a QR code or NFC-tap your smartphone to make a payment. In 2013, you'll also be given the ability to tip your barista, presumably assuming you can go through the awkwardness of pre-selecting how much you think their service is worth in front of them. Starbucks Offers Square Wallet Beginning Today Starbucks extends mobile payment choice and convenience to its customers at participating U.S. stores SEATTLE, November 8, 2012 – Starting today, Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) will begin accepting Square's mobile payment application, Square Wallet, in participating U.S. company-operated locations. With Square Wallet, Starbucks is giving customers another way to enjoy a quick, seamless payment experience at approximately 7,000 Starbucks stores. With Square Wallet people can pay at Starbucks and explore nearby businesses, browse menu information, store hours and transaction history, all on their phone. Square Wallet is in addition to Starbucks own mobile payment applications on iOS and Android™, which are used by Starbucks customers more than 2 million times each week, and are fully integrated with the Starbucks Card and My Starbucks Rewards™ programs. "We look forward to continuing to create amazing connections with our customers – both in our stores and outside of our stores and offering our customers choices in how they want to pay. Starbucks was the first national retailer to offer its own mobile payment technology combined with a world-class loyalty program in January 2011, and we have seen a tremendous response from our customers with more than 100 million mobile transactions occurring in our U.S. stores since its launch," said Adam Brotman, Starbucks chief digital officer. "Starbucks believes in the values and vision of Square, and just three months after announcing our partnership with Square, we are thrilled to make the convenience of paying with the Square Wallet app available to our customers starting today." Customers simply download Square Wallet to their iOS or Android™ device to set up an account. Square Wallet is linked to their debit or credit card, so there is never a need to reload a balance. Customers tap "pay here" and scan their QR code – similar to the customer experience on the existing Starbucks mobile payment applications. Their digital receipt appears instantly. "Square Wallet gives Starbucks customers a way to discover small businesses in their neighborhood," said William Henderson, Square Wallet director. "We're excited to work with Starbucks to introduce a broad new group of people to the benefits of using Square." The Starbucks Digital Network in Starbucks stores will feature the Square directory so customers can discover neighborhood businesses near their favorite Starbucks store. Note: Customers should be running iOS 5.0 or above or Android 2.2 or above on their mobile device to be able to use Square Wallet. |

Samsung Galaxy S III dethrones iPhone 4S as smartphone sales champ for Q3 2012 Posted: 08 Nov 2012 02:25 AM PST The Galaxy S III has overtaken Apple's iPhone 4S for the first time ever to become the top selling smartphone for Q3 2012, according to Strategy Analytics. Samsung claimed the pole position by shipping 18 million copies of its flagship handset during the quarter, compared to Cupertino's 16.2 million iPhone 4S units. Of course, serendipity is also likely at play, as the iPhone 5 hit shelves towards the end of that period, likely cannibalizing 4S sales -- in fact, the market research firm thinks Apple's new top handset will likely trump Samsung in Q4. That means the Korean giant may have to step up its game, or it'll just be keeping the top spot warm for its arch-competitor. Check the PR after fold for more info.
Samsung Galaxy S3 Overtakes Apple iPhone 4S to Become World's Best-Selling Smartphone Model in Q3 2012 November 8, 2012 09:22 According to new research from our Country Share Tracker (CST) service, Samsung's Galaxy S3 overtook Apple's iPhone 4S to become the world's best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever in the third quarter of 2012. A large touchscreen, extensive distribution and generous operator subsidies have propelled the Galaxy S3 to the top spot. Samsung's Galaxy S3 smartphone model shipped 18.0 million units worldwide during the third quarter of 2012. The Galaxy S3 captured an impressive 11 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world's best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever. A large touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the Galaxy S3's success. Apple shipped an estimated 16.2 million iPhone 4S units worldwide for second place, as consumers temporarily held off purchases in anticipation of a widely expected iPhone 5 upgrade at the end of the quarter. Samsung's Galaxy S3 has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators across North America, Europe and Asia. However, the Galaxy S3's position as the world's best-selling smartphone model is likely to be short-lived. The Apple iPhone 5 has gotten off to a solid start already with an estimated 6.0 million units shipped globally during Q3 2012. We expect the new iPhone 5 to out-ship Samsung's Galaxy S3 in the coming fourth quarter of 2012 and Apple should soon reclaim the title of the world's most popular smartphone model. |

Jam with Chrome: Google reinvents browser-based band practice (video) Posted: 08 Nov 2012 01:31 AM PST Wish you could spend your downtime practicing your guitar licks with your friends, but lack a garage and / or sympathetic neighbors? Google's just made both problems moot with its browser-based music service, Jam with Chrome. Unsurprisingly, Chrome users can invite up to three friends to join in a practice session, controlling synthesized instruments straight from the browser. We've been trying it for the last few minutes and it's still a little fussy when it comes to actually, you know, inviting your friends in, but when that minor issue is resolved, we've got big hopes that The Engadgets will knock that Bieber fellow off the top of the charts. |
Sandvine: Netflix up to 29 percent of North American internet traffic, YouTube is fast on the rise Posted: 08 Nov 2012 12:54 AM PST When we last checked in on one of Sandvine's traffic studies, Netflix had just edged past BitTorrent as the largest source of internet traffic in North America while YouTube was still a small-timer. A year has made quite the difference. Netflix is up to 28.8 percent in a new study, while YouTube has moved up to second place with 13.1 percent and demands even more than ordinary web requests. Rivals like Hulu don't register in the top 10, and YouTube is by far the ruler of mobile with nearly 31 percent of smartphone traffic headed its way. Overall usage is moving up rapidly, no matter what kind of network the continent uses -- the typical North American chews up 659MB per month when mobile and a hefty 51GB through a landline. There's little reason to dispute worries of the impact on bandwidth-strained internet providers, although we suspect most would disagree with Sandvine on what's to be done. The company naturally sees the study as a chance for business with carriers wanting to curb usage or charge extra through its tools; a generation that grew up with internet access, however, would likely see it as a better excuse to roll out more capacity for all those streaming videos. |
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite update optimizes your Manga mania, offers quicker settings Posted: 08 Nov 2012 12:21 AM PST Amazon is on the cusp of launching the complete Kindle line in Japan, so it's only right that the online retailer fine-tune its firmware for local reading habits. A new version 5.3.0 update for the Kindle Paperwhite puts much of that focus on Manga, introducing options to fit the stylized comics to the screen as well as tweak their page refresh interval separately from that of plain old text. Wider efforts to improve font rendering touch on Japanese characters in the process. Even if we're a little rusty with our hiragana, there's still some usability tweaks in store: settings are accessible directly from the menu, readers can purge their home screens of recommended content and sample books now sync their position relative to the full title. The bookworms among us that are too impatient to wait for an automatic update to 5.3.0 can hit the source link for the full skinny and a fast-track installation through USB. |
Timbuk2 Power Commute carries your gadgets, keeps 'em charged for $199 (hands-on) Posted: 07 Nov 2012 11:01 PM PST If you're like us, every one of your mobile devices could use a performance boost in one crucial area: battery life. Timbuk2 saw the exigency to keep phones, tablets, PMPs and cameras in the juice, and aims to meet that need with the Power Commute messenger bag announced earlier this year. And now you, dear reader can pick one up starting today for $199 from REI or through Timbuk2's website. Before you rush off to part with a pair of Benjamins for the bag and its waterproof Joey T1 portable power source, however, read on for our hands-on impressions. The Power Commute sports a form factor that's familiar to any Timbuk2 fan, as it's essentially a Commute Laptop TSA-Friendly messenger bag with a couple tweaks to set it apart. That means you get sturdy weatherproof construction, padded compartments for your 15-inch laptop and tablet and a pair of faux-fur lined pockets for storing phones and PMPs. Plus, there are myriad internal options for holding cables, peripherals, pens, drinks and anything else you find yourself lugging around on the daily. The new version differs from Timbuk2's standard laptop messenger in its coloration (exclusively black and gunmetal gray with green accents) and exchanges one of the interior water bottle pockets for a power pack pouch.
As a gadget lover frequently on-the-go, this editor can see the appeal of the bag's many nooks and crannies, which allow for stowing and organizing everything needed for a days work. The bag's equipped with thoughtful touches like the Napolean pocket up front -- which keeps oft-used sundries like gum or a transit card handy -- that's accessible even when the bag's top flap is shut. Of course, the main appeal of the Power Commute lies in its waterproof Joey T1 power supply, which Timbuk2 claims can recharge most phones twice. In an effort to minimize waste, the Joey doesn't come with a wall plug. Instead, the company figures you can use your phone's unit to charge it up via micro-USB. The Joey outputs electricity through a standard USB 2.0 port, and charging starts when you plug in any device -- the Joey's onboard circuitry handles the rest.
In our brief testing, we found that the Joey's 13Wh cell could only recharge our Galaxy Nexus a bit more than one and a half times. That's less than promised, but more than enough to get us through a day at even the most hectic trade show. Because it's a 5V unit pushing a single amp of power, it's not the speediest of charging methods, but it provides more than enough oomph to keep a gadget or two flush with electrons even when there's no outlet in sight. Timbuk2 Announces Partnership with Joey® Energy to Launch the First Series of Purpose-Built Bags with a Power Supply to Charge a Variety of Electronics while on the Move The San Francisco-based pioneer of the laptop bag unveils Power Commute and Power Q for the most innovative technology portage yet SAN FRANCISCO - Timbuk2, the San Francisco-based manufacturer, announces a partnership with Joey® Energy to offer the first series of purpose-built bags with a power supply to charge a variety of electronics while on the move. "We're passionate about developing innovative solutions for people's frenetic lifestyles," said Joey Energy Co-founder and Outdoor Industry Veteran, George Farkas. Angry Birds Star Wars adds sci-fi flavor to bird flinging, available today, we go hands-on Posted: 07 Nov 2012 11:00 PM PST Finland's biggest game studio is heading back into the coop, pulling out its Angry Birds franchise for yet another go on a whole mess of platforms -- this time, even Windows 8 and its mobile counterpart get some attention. Moreover, Rovio's teamed with the folks at LucasArts (now part of the Disney family) to craft an entirely thematic experience: enter Angry Birds Star Wars. But fret not -- just because Angry Birds Star Wars seems like a shameless tie-in doesn't mean it's a bad game (it is, however, a shameless tie-in, no matter which way you cut it). In fact, it's quite good, melding pieces of Angry Birds Space -- arguably the best and most creative entry in the Angry Birds franchise -- with new gameplay elements. Rather than birds which explode or other such modifiers, post-fling, Angry Birds Star Wars equips each of several themed birds with one weapon apiece. An Obi-Wan Kenobi-themed bird uses The Force to push enemies or blocks, while a Han Solo-themed bird fires three blasts from a space pistol, just to name a few. That Angry Birds Space component is little more than gravity effects, but it helps to mix up the often redundant level design -- if you've played more than one Angry Birds game, you've seen most of what's on offer here. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, per se, but be forewarned if you're expecting the kind of innovation we saw from Rovio's last Angry Birds spinoff, Bad Piggies. Angry Birds Star Wars launches today on iOS ($0.99 / iPhone, $2.99 / iPad), Android (Free SD version, HD is $2.99), Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac ($4.99), PC, Windows Phone ($0.99), and Windows 8. Go after the break to check out the cinematic and gameplay trailers, along with the PR.

Tokyoflash launches the Kisai Maru watch, lets you live out your Tony Stark fantasies (video) Posted: 07 Nov 2012 10:00 PM PST It's that time of the week when Tokyoflash launches another one of its charming, barely-decipherable timepieces. Except, this time out, the face is eminently readable -- with the only baffling addition a ring that joins the minute and hour hands. While it's available in black and silver, the sienna variant with its reddish-brown casing go hand-in-hand with the bracelet's chunky stylings to make it eerily reminiscent of Tony Stark's superhero outfit. If you'd to indulge your own arc reactor-infused fantasies, the company is selling the timepiece for $109 (€85, £68) until 2:00 AM ET Saturday, after which it'll set you back $149 (€116, £93). If you want to take a moment to see it in action before you order a cheeseburger and declare yourself Iron Man, head on past the break. |
T-Mobile USA Q3 2012 earnings: Revenue drops 6 percent to $4.9 billion, profit down 15 percent Posted: 07 Nov 2012 09:41 PM PST
T-Mobile USA just announced its Q3 2012 financials, and its balance sheet is sagging over last year: the company collected $4.9 billion, 6.4 percent less than Q3 2011, and earned $1.2 billion, a decline of 15.2 percent. The mobile operator said while it earned more from equipment sales, it wasn't enough to offset an 8.7 percent drop in service revenue caused by a loss of 492,000 lucrative postpaid clients. Despite the gloomy tidings, the telecom said it added 160,000 new users (net) over last quarter thanks in part to the iPhone 5 launch, including 365k branded prepaid customers -- and improved "churn" (clients switching carriers) by 30 basis points to 2.3 percent. Lenovo Q2 earnings reveal record high sales of $8.7 billion, highest-ever PC market share Posted: 07 Nov 2012 08:44 PM PST PC maker Lenovo has reported its earnings for Q2, and there was plenty of good news: $8.7 billion in sales, a record high, a PC market share of 15.6 percent, it's largest ever and operating profit of $206 million, 24 percent higher than the same period last year. The only bad news is that profit growth is slower than previous quarters, mostly due to Lenovo's reaching into new markets like tablets, smartphones and connected TVs. for now however, Lenovo can claim the crown as world's largest laptop PC maker, while desktop sales were also up five percent from last year. Its mobile internet division reported sales of $718 million, and is the second largest seller in China of smartphones and tablets. It's also China's number one PC vendor with sales outpacing the next four vendors combined and racked up double digit market share in the EMEA region for the first time. Check the press release after the break for all of the details, we'll be back in a few months to find out how all that new Windows 8 hardware sold. |
Advanced ticket sales for The Hobbit start, 450 theaters are ready for 48 fps 3D Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:43 PM PST Even if you aren't a Peter Jackson fan, you might still be interesting in seeing what all the fuss is about regarding the latest theater technology, 48 fps. It shouldn't be too hard either, because while the high frame version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a limited release, the 450~ locations planned (out of approximately 4000 theaters showing the flick) cover just about every major and mid-sized city in the US. Regal and AMC theaters might be your best bet as they lead the pack in LA, with 19 theaters there ready for the new technology. Advanced ticket sales are already available for the December 14th release, but you'll want to look for 'HFR' or the words High Frame Rate before check out, if you want to see it the way Peter Jackson intended. If things go well, you can expect a much wider release of the 48 fps version of the sequel, which is already set to hit theaters in December 2013. |
LG's 29-inch EA93 is the world's first 21:9 ultrawidescreen monitor, launches this month in Korea Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:18 PM PST While "ultrawidescreen" 21:9 aspect ratio HDTVs haven't taken off despite several attempts, LG is bringing the formfactor to the desktop with its new EA93 UltraWide LCD monitor. Measuring at 29-inches with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,080, it uses the extra horizontal space to display not just cinema-style movies, but also side by side video from different sources or up to four different views at once thanks to its built-in software. For connections, it has DVI Dual Link, DisplayPort, or HDMI with MHL support. We got an eyeful of the monitor at IFA earlier this year and you can check out our hands-on video after the break, or take a quick Korean vacation to snag one for 690,000 won ($633) before they go on sale everywhere else later in the year -- pricing elsewhere has not yet been announced.
"LG is always working to expand the definition of what technology is and how it can contribute to productivity and convenience. Whether its for work, watching movies, playing games or anything else in between, the UltraWide Monitor enhances the multitasking and multimedia experience," said J.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the IT Business Unit at the LG Home Entertainment Company. "The cinematic proportions, diverse color range and all-around functionality of the UltraWide Monitor clearly demonstrate an ongoing commitment to innovation." Multitasking Functionality for Home and Office The UltraWide Monitor is also an outstanding device for graphics professionals. The monitor enables artists to see more and do more with their time. Transforming the monitor into the ultimate multitasking tool, the 4-Screen Split feature can divide the screen into up to four segments, each of which can be uniquely customized. Graphic designers generally utilize a dual-monitor configuration, allowing them to compare and contrast the material they are editing. However, dual monitors can cause color inconsistencies between screens. The UltraWide monitor, on the other hand, can connect the monitor to two external devices via Dual Link-up, providing consistent color across the entire screen, eliminating the bezels that typically divide the view in dual-monitor set-ups. Additionally, the monitor offers 100 percent of the sRGB color space and is hardware-color-calibration ready, making it perfectly adept at expressing consistent true-to-life colors that graphics professionals require. Perfect for Movies and Multimedia Viewing LG's UltraWide Monitor will be introduced in Korea early this month and rolled-out globally in the weeks following. HTC Windows Phone 8S hits the FCC with North American 3G, gives the US a horrible tease Posted: 07 Nov 2012 04:58 PM PST Unlike Nokia, all of HTC's Windows Phone effort in the US this fall has been centered on the high-end, through the Windows Phone 8X. That makes the FCC appearance of its budget cousin, the 8S, borderline cruel for American fans of HTC's hyper-colorized design. The phone getting clearance has support for both AT&T and T-Mobile HSPA bands without the LTE that either American carrier would want. Given that the 8S is officially destined for Canada (and not the US) without a named carrier, we're most likely looking at an example for a budget Canuck provider such as Mobilicity or Wind. At least the frequencies will be a comfort to gray market US importers who want HTC's Windows Phone aesthetic on the cheap. |
Sony Network Entertainment prez Tim Schaaff retires, will remain on board of directors Posted: 07 Nov 2012 04:20 PM PST Tim Schaaff came over to Sony from Apple back in 2005 with a mission of aligning its vast consumer electronics and entertainment interests, and today the company has announced he's retiring from his post as Sony Network Entertainment President at the end of the year. Schaaf's responsibilities will be taken over by current Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House to start 2013, although Schaaf will retain his seat on Sony Network's board of directors. In place and SNEI prez since 2010, he was around for the infamous PSN hack and subsequent outage in 2011, calling it a "great experience"... that he would not like to do again, of course. While Sony has made great strides in reorganizing the way its disparate arms work together since '05 (remember Sony Connect? No one else does either.) his departure comes amidst new company head Kaz Hirai's "One Sony" turnaround efforts along the same lines. A rebranding of PlayStation Network to Sony Entertainment Network hasn't pushed the Music and Movie Unlimited properties to the top just yet, nor connected devices like its tablets and phones -- we'll see if this executive shuffling has any effect on the company's fortunes going forward. SONY NETWORK ENTERTAINMENT PRESIDENT AND GROUP EXECUTIVE OF (Tokyo, November 8, 2012) - Sony Corporation today announced that Tim Schaaff, President of Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI) and Group Executive of Sony Corporation, will retire as of December 31, 2012. Schaaff will remain on the SNEI board of directors as an external director. Effective January 1, 2013, Group Executive of Sony Corporation Andrew House will assume responsibilities for SNEI during the transition, in addition to his current role as President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.(SCEI). The existing SNEI executive staff will manage daily operations. Tim Schaaff joined Sony Corporation of America in December 2005 and has contributed greatly towards Sony's vision to create a network business that unifies Sony's network entertainment experience across all of its hardware products. "Tim has been a strong leader within Sony who truly embodied the 'One Sony' spirit by successfully leading corporate-wide initiatives across business units since he joined," said Kazuo Hirai, President and CEO, Sony Corporation. "I thank Tim for his passion and innumerable contributions to the company." "Under the leadership of Kaz, and Sir Howard Stringer before him, Sony gave me tremendous support to build a global team to coordinate and lead the company's network service business," said Tim Schaaff. "Together we created something of significant value that will be an important part of Sony's future. I'm grateful to have had this unique opportunity, proud of the commitment my team has demonstrated, and encouraged about Sony's prospects in this strategic area." |
Marshall Major 50 FX 50th anniversary headphones now available for $170 Posted: 07 Nov 2012 03:44 PM PST Practically synonymous with Rock 'n' Roll, premium audio equipment maker Marshall is celebrating 50 years of sound with the release of its Major 50 FX headphones. Priced at $170, these celebratory cans take their cues from the limited run Hanwell anniversary edition amp, featuring gold accents and a commemorative headband with the inscription "London, England, 1962" to mark when it all began, along with inner ear caps engraved with the words "50 years." Vintage in appearance, these golden-year shrugs also include an Apple-certified microphone and volume control, so you can pretend that you're slappin' da bass while taking a phone call. |
MR-808 recreates Roland drum machine with robot instruments, puts them in an 808 State (video) Posted: 07 Nov 2012 02:36 PM PST Music lovers will often tell you that Roland's TR-808 gave birth to modern music. Acid house, rap, techno and other genres owe some of their original (and even current) sounds to that synthetic beat. Moritz Simon Geist appreciates the effort, but has built a solution for those who think the drum machine is a little too perfect: his MR-808 installation has robot limbs playing all the equivalent real-world instruments, right down to the cowbell. A laptop musician at the helm sends MIDI input to an Arduino controller that then triggers the robot's instrument motors and matching lights. The effect is a unique mix of flawless cues with imprecise, almost organic sounds -- imagine 808 State or Kanye West replacing each and every machine with a live band and you've got the idea. Although the sheer size of the MR-808 sadly nixes chances you'll ever see one at the local nightclub, it could give any of Geist's recorded music one of the more distinct vibes we've heard. |
Nintendo Wii U vs. Nintendo Wii ... fight! Posted: 07 Nov 2012 01:33 PM PST The first thing we noticed about Nintendo's next console when we last got our hands on it was the length -- the Wii U is Nintendo's longest console yet. Sure, sure, there's a tablet controller and HD graphics and yadda yadda yadda. That's immaterial. What matters here, folks, is how the new hardware -- the console itself -- physically stacks up against the first Wii. As you'll see in our gallery, length is the least of the Wii U's changes: in the Wii U, Nintendo added two more USB 2.0 ports up front and rounded out its hard right angles, for starters. Around back, the port layout of the Wii is nigh-on identical with that of the Wii U, albeit with the fan moved an inch (or so) to the right, making space for HDMI output. This is an HD console, after all. Wonderfully, unlike the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii U includes an HDMI cable right out of the box. Not a huge deal, but it sure was a baffling move when Sony and Microsoft both skimped on such an important detail. The only other change we spotted (outside of the power port being flipped from horizontal to vertical) is the lack of GameCube controller ports up top. Say sayonara to those old Wavebirds, as Nintendo's moving on to its new tablet controller and its updated Pro Controller. Take some super close-up looks at all the minute differences with us below. |

Apple exec Eddy Cue joins Ferrari board of directors, raises hopes for truly high-tech exotic cars Posted: 07 Nov 2012 12:27 PM PST Ferrari loves to extol the advances found in its drivetrains, but the unspoken rule is that its interior technology leaves something to be desired; unless you're thinking of a 458's manettino, even a less expensive car like the Tesla Model S is virtually in another league. The automaker may be narrowing that gap by putting Apple online lead Eddy Cue on the Ferrari board of directors. Without giving too much away, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo points to Cue's experience with the "dynamic, innovative world of the internet" as the motivation -- as good a sign as any that the Maranello team wants to take connected cars seriously. Whenever the Apple Senior VP's experience comes into full effect, we may see one of the few supercar lineups whose cabins are as advanced as the engines. Just don't look for any tight integration with Ferrari-badged Acer gear in the near future. |

TI details the wireless power chip in the Lumia 920, offers four times the charging area Posted: 07 Nov 2012 11:28 AM PST If you're one of the first on your block to have picked up a Nokia Lumia 920, you might wonder why it's so forgiving with where you set it down on the wireless charging pad. TI is more than willing to share. The 920, 820, Fatboy charging pillow and JBL PowerUp speaker all use a new TI bq500410A controller whose support for new transmitters gives it a charging area four times larger than we're used to. The 2.76 by 0.79 inches of coverage might not sound like much, but it's much wider than the previous 0.71 square inches while preserving a 70 percent efficiency and a safety cutoff if something gets in between. As a companion, there's a bq51050B chip launching at the same time that represents the first Qi receiver with its own built-in battery charger, which TI claims can charge more quickly and in less space than its rivals. Anyone embracing Nokia's vision of Windows Phone 8 can get their hands on devices using the wireless power chips today; we're only left hoping that TI's official news means other phone makers can tag along. TI transforms mobile charging experience with wireless power TI's receivers and bq500410A transmitter ICs are included in the new Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 smartphones and wireless charging accessories, such as the Nokia BH-220 Bluetooth headset and DT-38 cradle, JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker docking station with built-in NFC, and the Nokia Wireless Charging Pillow by Fatboy, which TI will demonstrate in its booth at electronica (Hall A4, Booth 420) on Nov. 13-16. Wireless power is an emerging technology that creates a better charging experience for consumers, just as Wi-Fi replaced the need to use an Ethernet cable for Internet connectivity. TI's advanced receiver and transmitter integrated circuits, design tools and resources are making wireless power a reality. TI has current solutions that support Qi-compliant devices, and will expand its portfolio to support future, viable technologies. As the leading provider of power management ICs, including battery management and power supply technology, TI relies on power design expertise to drive innovations in wireless charging. The bq51050B comes in a 1.9-mm by 3.0-mm WCSP package or 4.5-mm by 3.5-mm QFN, and is priced at US$2.75 in 1,000-unit quantities. A bq51051B version with 4.35-V charge voltage is available. The bq500410A comes in a 48-pin, 7-mm by 7-mm QFN package, and is priced at US$3.18 in 1,000-unit quantities. |
