THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, JANUARY 13 2017 By Darrell Etherington

Microsoft AI gets smarter with Maluuba, and autonomous testing everywhere. It's the Daily Crunch for January 13, 2017. And if you didn't pre-order a Switch already, good luck with that.

1. Microsoft acquires a general AI startup

Microsoft acquired Maluuba, a Battlefield alum focused on general AI. That's a huge pick-up, and it comes with some expert, world-class AI expertise. Microsoft could make general AI a reality with moves like this one.

This is an arms race for talent and product experience in AI, and Microsoft has a decent track record of playing it smart. Who will win? Only the AIs know, and they aren't telling.

2. Is social media over?

It very well could be, according to John Biggs. He looks at how all our platforms have turned against us, making for really anti-social results across tools like Twitter and Facebook. I'd definitely be happier outside.

3. GM's Bolt paves the way for lots more EVs

Electric vehicle plans are in the works at GM, even if it hasn't talked much about them. The company's CEO Mary Barra says that the Bolt will be the platform on which a number of different, yet-to-be-announced EVs are based. Stay tuned.

4. VR farewell to Barack and Michelle

Obama's presidency is almost over, but you can take a VR tour of the White House with Barack and Michelle to say goodbye. There's also a VR stream of the inauguration, but I'll pass on that one.

5. Nintendo Switch's first announced games

I like games, and I like Nintendo. I'm excited enough about the Nintendo Switch that I pre-ordered, and these games are a big reason why. But it could all still go terribly wrong, like the Wii U.

6. Nissan starts testing self-driving in Europe

London get ready for self-driving Nissan Leafs. This is the first move in testing autonomous cars in Europe for the Japanese automaker, but it's a big market for Nissan, so definitely a trial to watch.
