| Tweets seek justice for hate mongers, GoDaddy puts its foot down and Netflix keeps signing top creative content. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for August 14, 2017. 1. Twitter's role in weekend's racist white supremacist rally This weekend saw a horrifying display of outright racism and pro-Nazi public support during rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia. If you logged onto Twitter at all during the events and following, it's likely what dominated your feed. There was plenty of alt-right garbage on Twitter supporting the rallies, sadly, but there was also a wide-reaching campaign to identify the protesters, which resulted in at least one of the Nazi sympathizers losing their job. Good riddance. 
2. GoDaddy tells Daily Stormer to find a new home Meanwhile, web host GoDaddy has kicked The Daily Stormer off of its platform after the alt-right publication posted an incredibly offensive article about protester and murder victim Heather Heyer, who died when a white nationalist drove into a crowd of protesters at the rallies. Tech companies seem increasingly to be using their terms of service to shut down those who would use their platform for hate. 3. Netflix lands Shonda Rhimes in multi-year deal Netflix is really building up its content creator chops: It signed Shonda Rhimes, the creator behind Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder and many more to a multi-year deal to produce exclusive new TV and films. Great get for Netflix. 4. Tesla takes its solar show on the road Tesla is using a solar-equipped 'tiny house' to show Australians what they're missing by not buying up the Powerwall, their home energy storage solution. The tiny house is also towed by a Model X, which demonstrates that vehicle's versatility. 5. Uber expands in-app tipping to the UK Uber added in-app tipping to all markets in North America last month, and now it's rolling the feature out in the UK. Adding this feature internationally before competitor Lyft even has a presence outside the U.S. is a smart move for recruiting on the driver side. 6. Google adds voice typing support for 30 additional languages Google now supports a wide range of new languages for voice typing, and voice search. This is big news for a company that's looking to voice as a next potentially huge platform for apps and services. 7. Watch SpaceX launch today SpaceX is launching its latest mission, CRS-12 for NASA, today at 12:31 PM EDT (so shortly after you receive this). You can watch it live right at the link above. This mission includes SpaceX's largest ever scientific payload, with plenty of experiments to keep ISS scientists busy. |
