Mark Zuckerberg in the spotlight, Uber's experiment with public transit and an impending Gmail revamp. All that and in The Daily Crunch for April 11, 2018. 1. Zuckerberg's boring testimony is a big win for Facebook So after all that buildup, what actually happened when Mark Zuckerberg appeared before the joint Senate judiciary and commerce committee yesterday? There were no big revelations. In fact, he spent part of the time just explaining Facebook's basic functionality. TechCrunch's Josh Constine argues that this all works to Facebook's advantage, with the underwhelming testimony suggesting (accurately or not) that after weeks of scandal and criticism, there's not much left to uncover. 2. Spotify and Hulu launch a discounted entertainment bundle for $12.99 per month The two companies already offer a student bundle combining both of their services for a discounted price. Today, they announced that similar discounted bundle will be available to all users. 3. A revamped version of Spotify's free service is reportedly in the works Speaking of Spotify, the music streaming service has a big event scheduled for April 24 in New York. It's got something up its sleeve; that much we know for sure. 4. Uber gets into car rentals and public transit On the transit side, Uber has partnered with Masabi, a mobile ticketing platform that should allow people to book and use transit tickets from within the Uber app. 5. Google is about to launch a Gmail web redesign Google sent an email to G Suite customers to tell them that the company has been working on a brand new version of Gmail for the web. For one thing, you can expect to be able to access Google Calendar from the Gmail interface directly. 6. Apple is making a show based on Isaac Asimov's 'Foundation' books I will fight anyone who's not excited (and nervous) about this. 7. Snapchat's second-gen Spectacles hit the FCC Sounds like the company is taking hardware a bit more seriously this time around. |
