THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, JULY 6 2018 By Anthony Ha

Sonos is going public, MoviePass introduces surge pricing and Samsung predicts slowing growth. Here's your Daily Crunch for July 6, 2018.

1. Sonos files to raise up to $100M in IPO

The smart speaker maker says it's sold a total of 19 million products to 6.9 million households.

And while it's competing with giants like Apple and Amazon, Sonos emphasizes its role as an independent player that can work with music streaming services like Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify and TuneIn. It's also looking to integrate with more voice assistants beyond its initial partnership with Amazon Alexa.

2. MoviePass subscribers will now pay surcharges for popular showtimes

The company's plan to introduce summer surge pricing went into effect yesterday. It's an extra cost, but it might also mean that MoviePass subscribers have a chance to see big blockbusters on opening weekend.

3. Samsung forecasts slowing profit growth for Q2, missing analyst estimates

Shares in the company are down just over 2 percent on the earnings guidance news.

4. Skedaddle has had acquisition talks with Uber and Lyft

Skedaddle launched in 2015 to help people find a low-cost and easy way to travel to out-of-town events like music festivals. Think of it as rideshare, but to another town, not to the bar down the street, and via private bus rides.

5. Netflix is ditching user reviews

To be honest, I'd totally forgotten Netflix even has user reviews.

6. Vitalik Buterin: "I definitely hope centralized exchanges go burn in hell as much as possible"

Columnist Jon Evans interviewed Buterin on-stage TechCrunch Sessions: Blockchain in Switzerland.

7. This startup streamlines the pro bono work of lawyers, including those fighting for immigrants at the border

Paladin is a New York-based SaaS business that helps legal teams sign up for pro-bono opportunities, enables coordinators to track the lawyers' work and captures some of impact that the lawyers are making through their efforts.
