News@8pm: Gran Turismo 5 release and iPhone gets Flash

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab has made an impression as it busts into the market and starts to produce some interesting apps. An app has been released for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab that promotes the 2012 London Olympics. Apple will need to get some ideas running if the iPad is going to contend with this. Or have we spoken too soon as the iPhone will be getting new Flash compatibility via Skyfire app. Impressive moves from both parties.

Samsung Continuum leaks and with the latest images are some pretty impressive features. The upcoming Android handset, dubbed the Samsung Continuum, has be leaked ahead of its November 8th unveiling and shows it with dual AMOLED displays. November 8th is important  for another phone as on this day the US public will be able to pre-order one of HP and Palm's new Palm Pre 2 handsets ahead of its November 11th release date. Doesn't give shoppers much time to get their hands on one.

Gran Turismo 5 will soon be hitting the UK stores, well we strongly think so since the game has gone to print in preparation of its yet unnamed release date. In other gaming news, have you bought Fable III, the fantasy RPG that reached the top of the UK game charts in its first weekend? Well if you have you might be experiencing some bugs that are ruining all your fun. If so, then you'll be happy to know that Lionhead Studios has set up a problem forum online, where they intend to fix the issues.

Xbox Kinect launches this week in the US and its not a long wait till it arrives in the UK, but is there anything else Microsoft can tell us about it that will surprise us? The answer is yes. The Xbox Kinect uses less than 10% of the Xbox 360's processor, which means this is going to be one machine that will be able to put the peddle to the metal with ease. If you think that's cool then you might like to know that Orange has entered the UK Mi-Fi market against Three Mobile and Vodafone with the Novatel 3352 Mi-Fi device. Watch this space!

As the Angry Birds creators gear up to cash in on the game’s popularity ahead of the Christmas period with a range of Angry Birds themed plush toys and other such merchandise we want to know, is Angry Birds the greatest app ever made?

Call of Duty: Black Ops facing censor's cuts ahead of launch

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 09:39 AM PDT

Japan and Germany cull CoD's violent streak

The upcoming addition to the CoD franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops is reportedly facing further censor implemented cuts after Square Enix apologised to Japanese gamers over the edited version of the game they are set to receive.

The title’s Japanese publisher is believed to have been forced to remove a number of scenes from the upcoming wartime shooter so as to pass the country's strict CERO ratings board. These latest cuts follow news that last month the German edition of the game faced the censor’s chopping board.

To pass Japanese rating constraints all swastikas in the game’s ‘Zombie mode’ will be replaced by iron crosses whilst scenes that include aspects of dismemberment or “expressions of brutality” are to find themselves left on the cutting room floor.

German gamers keen to get their hands and game pads locked on to Call of Duty: Black Ops when it hits stores next week will find themselves in possession of a game devoid of explosions that lead to limb loss, a slow motion scene of an enemy being shot, a prisoner torture scene, German ‘anti-constitutional symbols’ and somewhat surprisingly Mick Jagger’s song ‘Sympathy for the Devil’.

No reports as to edits of the UK-bound version of the game have yet been made.

Will you be queuing through the night for your copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the game’s release including reviews and launch event highlights.

Apple to increase iTunes track previews to 90 seconds

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 09:06 AM PDT

US iTunes users to get triple the length free clips

Apple is to extend the preview ‘clips’ of songs on iTunes from the current 30 seconds to a whopping minute and a half, the Cupertino company has revealed.

In a letter to record labels the iPod makers and leaders in digital music sales told those in the music biz it is to triple the time of clips available for free to iTunes users with the attitude of if you don’t like it, lump it more than slightly visible from the curt notice.

Currently only planned for implementation in the United States, Apple has declared that songs running more than 2 minutes 30 seconds in length will have their ‘clips’ increased to 90 seconds whilst tracks shorter than the cut-off point will remain with the current 30 second preview.

"We believe that giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases," the document revealed to be Apple’s official line on the move to increased length previews.

Apple iOS 4.2 to launch next week with alarm bug fix?

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 08:15 AM PDT

iOS 4.2 to hit UK next week?

Version 4.2 of Apple’s iOS operating system is reported to be arriving as early as next week as it is confirmed by the iPhone manufacturers that the update will fix the ‘alarmgate’ bug that has seen many Apple handset users facing missed appointments due to a Daylight Savings glitch.

"We're aware of an issue related to daylight-saving time and repeating alarms and will deliver a fix with the iOS 4.2 software update this month," proclaimed Apple in a statement to The Telegraph recently.

The alarm issues that affected iPhone owners across Europe over the weekend saw the device’s clock auto-adjust to the new daylight-saving hours whilst a hidden error caused the alarm to run from a different time causing users to be awoken an hour after their desired alarm presets.

As well as bringing bug fixes to the iPhone’s alarm and emergency calls errors, iOS 4.2 will see multitasking and Game Centre introduced to the company’s iPad tablet device for the first time.

Recently released to registered iOS developers allowing for compatible apps to be submitted prior to launch, iOS 4.2 build 8C134 is confirmed to be rolled out globally on a yet undisclosed date later this month. With an Apple spokespeople stating "We suggest customers set non-repeating alarms for now, and reset after 7 November to resolve the issue” could we see the latest iOS by next week?

What features would you like to see Apple add to its iOS? Share your thoughts and hopes with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. Stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the launch of iOS 4.2.

Mobile network provider Orange has announced it is to challenge Three Mobile and Vodafone in the UK Mi-Fi market as it launches its own mobile Wi-Fi creator, the snappily named Novatel Wireless 3352.

"Requiring no USB connections or wires, Orange customers can now create a portable 3G Wi-Fi hotspot for all their Wi-Fi gadgets, at the touch of a button", stated the brightly hued service provider. Adding: “Rewarding users with best value, all Orange customers, whether on pay monthly, pay as you go or on Orange home broadband – receive a £5 discount on mobile broadband plans, giving them the flexibility to surf, email and post updates wherever they are.”

The Orange Mi-Fi device is announced alongside a reform of the company’s broadband price plans that will see 12-month contractual offerings returned to the Dolphin and Raccoon tariffs. Both the one month and 12 month Dolphin plans will now come packaged with 1GB of monthly browsing allowance with multiple packages also offering an additional 1GB of “quiet time” internet use.

Samsung Continuum revealed with dual AMOLED displays

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:40 AM PDT

Samsung dual screen handset breaks cover ahead of November 8th unveiling

As speculation grows around what Android based phone Samsung is to grandly unveil during its well publicised phone launch next week, full specifications of the heavily rumoured Samsung Continuum have seemingly leaked hinting to its imminent arrival.

Images of the Continuum were first leaked last month with the dual AMOLED display touting handset now making an appearance on an online ‘holiday gift idea’ page of US network provider Verizon Wireless.

Joining the standard 3.4-inch Super AMOLED display on the mooted Android 2.1 device is a smaller 1.8-inch display that can reportedly display information such as incoming text messages, notifications, RSS feeds and stock prices without the handset’s primary display needing to be activated.

Although Samsung has yet to officially acknowledge any such handset, the leaked specs peg the expected device with a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash and 720p HD video recording capabilities alongside 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity and 2GB of on-board memory further expanded by an 8GB pre-installed SD card.

Pricing and release date information remains a mystery at the moment. Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for full coverage of Samsung’s November 8th Android handset unveiling and any further information on the Continuum.

Palm Pre 2 pre-order date confirmed for November 8th

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:09 AM PDT

Seems our US brethren will be getting WebOS sequel soon

HP and Palm's newset smartphone, the Palm Pre 2, is set for a release on US network Verizon on November 11th in the US. Pre-orders will begin on November 8th however, giving potential buyers a mere three days to assure they get their hands on one.

HP revealed the pre-order date via its Facebook page set up for students. It was not specified whether or not the Palm Pre 2 handset would be a GSM or CDMA, although rumours point towards it being a GSM.

The GSM version unfortunately only supports T-Mobile’s 3G network, while the CDMA 4G type should arrive in the near future at Verizon Wireless. The Palm Pre 2 is the first smartphone to run the new webOS 2.0 operating system, allowing for a faster processor and better performance.

With the Palm Pre 2 already launched in France and soon to be released in the US, we’re hoping that it won’t be long till we see it on the streets of the UK too. Are you looking forward to the Palm Pre 2? Let us know via our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Gran Turismo 5 UK release nears as game goes to print

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 04:08 AM PDT

GT5 nears release as game disks roll off production line

Although Gran Turismo 5 was due to hit shelves later this week before having its November 5th release date devastatingly removed, the long awaited and frequently delayed title has finally gone to print, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed.

Speaking at the Las Vegas car show SEMA yesterday Yamauchi proclaimed that following five years and $60 million in development, discs of the fifth addition to the Gran Turismo franchise are currently rolling off the production line.

"The discs are being stamped as we speak," Yamauchi told expectant gamers. The GT head honcho has come under criticism in recent months follow endless delays to the upcoming title and his anal level of obsession to detail that saw many eager fans give up hope on ever receiving the game

Although an exact date for Gran Turismo 5’s arrival has yet to be announced, the news that Yamauchi and his team have finally downed tools and handed the game over to the disc producers leans strongly in the favour of a pre-Christmas arrival.

T3 last month gave readers the opportunity to try out GT5 for free in UK for the first time as event attendees got behind the wheel of the virtual racer in all its 3D glory.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest on Gran Turismo 5’s imminent release and date announcements.

Kinect uses less than 10 per cent of Xbox 360's processor

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 03:44 AM PDT

Specs get a boon ahead of next week's UK launch

Xbox Kinect lands in the US tomorrow, and people have been queuing up since Monday across the pond to get their hands on it, along with a $150 bundle that’s promised to the first 3000 buyers. Those in line will be pleased at the added bonus that a Microsoft exec has just made bold claims about its prowess.

Alex Kipman of MS has come out as saying that the device will only use a ‘single-digit percentage’ of the 360’s processing power – as opposed to the 10-15 per cent that had originally been suggested.

That’s good news for graphically intensive games, as it means things should still be able to run smoothly no matter how much you wave about in front of the camera.

Wondering how Kinect works?
- Read our in-depth Kinect teardown and explanation

Kinect launches on November 10th in the UK, and has already sold out on pre-order at many leading retailers.

Apple iPhone to get Flash compatibility via Skyfire app

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 03:39 AM PDT

Apple's Flash hiatus to come to an end

The illusive and longstanding bugbear of Apple’s portable products looks set to be rectified shortly as a new downloadable app of the Skyfire mobile browser will allow iPhone users to view Flash videos directly from their handsets.

The app, which was submitted back in August and has reportedly since been approved by Apple, is set to bring Flash to iOS running devices, correcting a problem many Apple fans feared would never be resolved based on Steve Jobs’ spat with Adobe over the popular video format.

A fully-fledged web browser built on top of Safari, Skyfire, whilst not capable of playing Flash videos directly, converts the Flash content to H.264 a HTML5 compatible codec that will bypass the previous Flash incompatibility issues and allow videos to be viewed in a pop up window. Making the “can’t view this video” warnings which are all too common to iPhone users a thing of the past, the Flash issues that have caused much controversy with Apple fans are set to come to a somewhat patchy end.

"The “Video” icon [on Skyfire] enables users to play millions of Flash videos around the web that otherwise do not play on mobile. This unlocks content trapped behind those error messages with question marks and blue Legos by transcoding the Flash content into HTML5 on Skyfire’s servers" proclaimed a Skyfire press release.

App pricing and an exact date of launch has yet to be revealed. Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest on the arrival of the Skyfire app.

Fable III bugs prompt Lionhead to set up a reporting page

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 12:20 AM PDT

Don't fret if you get a corrupted save game. Start a new one. And report it to Lionhead.

Fable III's Lionhead has set up a bug reporting page if any users are encountering problems with the popular role-playing game.

On Lionhead's blog, they've acknowledged that some people are facing technical issues. The blog says: "That's bound to happen of course with a game the size of Fable, our poor testers worked flat out but if something slips through the nets, then don't panic!"

If you indeed are facing any kind of technical glitch, Lionhead has made it easier with the reporting page. All you need to do is describe your issue, type of Xbox console you're using and other details they need to help with the problem.

The blog indicates that the page is being monitored on a daily basis and the testing and development teams are working towards releasing a patch in their next update.

However, there's no clear date on when the next update will be. The blog says, "There is no ETA on this, seeing as the process of game development is a slow, long and lonely one, so please bear with us. I hope to be able to update you in the near future."

Till then, all you can do, the blog says, is to start a new game if you come up against a corrupt save game.

Fable III is a RPG released for the Xbox 360 in October 2010. Voice talents in the game include Michael Fassbender, Stephen Fry and Simon Pegg. Fable III is set decades after the scenario in Fable II in the continent of Albion, where the player, through a series of events, leads a revolution to rule the lands. The game topped the UK gaming chart in its initial weekend.

What are your thoughts on Fable III? Pop over to our Twitter and Facebook feeds and tell us. Keep tuned in for regular updates in gaming and the tech world.

Samsung Galaxy Tab app tp promote London Olympics

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 11:50 PM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy Tab has won over the Apple iPad...at least for the 2012 London Olympics

Move over Apple iPad, the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab is here. Even the London Olympic Games says so.

The London 2012 Olympic Games has chosen the Samsung Galaxy Tab over any other tablet, including the Apple iPad to promote the high-profile event. To be used as a high tech tourism tool, the Samsung Galaxy Tab will come pre-loaded with an app from December onwards, that will share information on what one can see and do all over Britain. The app has been developed for VisitBritain.

The custom-made app will offer information on accommodation, trips and entertainment ideas. It's also available for download on all Samsung smartphones. The expected target is 25 million mobile phones.

The choice to plump for Samsung over others is not that surprising when you realize that the company is the worldwide wireless communications partner for the 2012 London Olympics.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab went on sale two days ago with a variety of prices to choose from. The cheapest is at £99.99 for the tablet and £40 every month for two years. More options are also available.

Do bear in mind though, that the games are in 2012. A lot of technology can be developed in 2 years. Perhaps another tablet could be in the running for the hot spot of official Olympics Games tablet in a year? Watch this space.

Do you think the Samsung Galaxy Tab is better than the Apple iPad? Weigh in on this debate on T3's Twitter and Facebook pages and we'll keep you in the loop on all the tech plans of the 2012 London Olympics.

Sophos introduces free Apple Mac antivirus softwares

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 11:34 PM PDT

More Apples ... more worms...

Macs have Sophos to thank for its latest free antivirus software which is said to protect the devices from all known malware such as spyware, worms, Trojans and other viruses.

Sophos is offering the free software only to Apple users and warned of virus attacks against Macs becoming more prevalent. The company also said that the attacks would get worse because of the growing market share of Apple. Apple's new products, as well as their tactic of reducing the price of the Apple Mac Mini can only increase their popularity and number of units sold.

Chris Kraft, product management vice president at IT security firm, Sophos, said: "While most businesses recognise the importance of protecting their Mac computers from malware threats, most home users do not. By offering free industrial-strength security to home users, we aim to protect Mac users against today's and tomorrow's Mac threats."

Even though Macs were known to be safer compared to Microsoft's Windows, they're growing increasingly popular and could be subject to virus attacks as well.

However secure it might be, no platform is 100% safe.

There is currrently no charge for the antivirus software and can be downloaded here.

Will you be downloading these free antivirus programs? Tell us why on T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and tune in for regular Mac news.
