Posted: 05 Nov 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Apple lose followers
as its latest antics reveal some interesting facts. Apple MacBook Air owners will find that when using Flash you will lose a third of your battery power. No wonder the Macbook Air wasn't released with pre-installed Flash. The dead pixel policy for Apple's iPhone and iPad has been leaked, revealing that your iMac needs more than 15 dead pixels for Apple to take notice. Not a good day for our confidence in Apple.

Dunhill Portable Solar Charger: T3 exclusive

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 08:25 AM PDT

The most stylish way to charge on the move

Luxury fashion and accessories label Dunhill has announced its own solar-powered mobile phone charger, the Dunhill Portable Solar Charger.

The flip-open device is made from tough aerospace aluminium with a brushed silver finish. A push button ‘power halo’ tells you how much juice it has, and if it’s an overcast day you can power it up from your PC via the USB connection. It can hold up to 1800GHZ – enough to give your mobile 70 hours of standby, or an ebook reader 5,000 page turns.

This being Dunhill, it also comes with a carbon fibre effect chassis leather carry case. Because anything less would put you with the rest of the solar crew.

The Dunhill Portable Solar Charger will be out in February, for £125.

With skis, a snowboard, phone cases and a solar powered bag in past ranges, you can’t accuse the luxury company of being stuck in the past.

Apple MacBook Air battery loses a third with Flash

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 07:49 AM PDT

Apple's Flash omission looks less petty

The true cause of Apple’s failure to ship the new and updated Apple MacBook Air with Flash pre-installed appears to have been outed as latest reports show adding the video viewing software to the machine cuts a staggering third from its battery life.

Despite later acknowledging that it had omitted the heavily used Flash compatibility from yet another of its devices, Apple remained tight lipped regarding the troubling battery diminishing issues.

Repeated consumer tests have reportedly shown that the new 11-inch Mac Air model can eek an above-spec six hours out of its battery when devoid of Flash. Adding Adobe’s software, however, apparently cuts that browsing time to just four hours, taking the shine off the “full web experience”.

Flash run banner ads are believed to be the primary culprit of the excessive CPU activity, replaced instead by a single static image when using the machine Flash free.

Have you noticed a drop in battery life following installing Flash on your MacBook Air or other Apple laptop? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 FroYo upgrade launched

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 07:14 AM PDT

Android 2.2 update to finally hit the Samsung Galaxy S

After months of waiting owners of the formidable Samsung Galaxy S Android handset will today be able to update their devices to run the latest incarnation of the Google mobile OS, Android 2.2, FroYo.

The flagship Samsung handset became a major player in the smartphone market following its launch back in July but has remained devoid of the OS upgrade despite FroYo landing on a number of its closest competitors.

“Froyo starts rolling out today; everyone will have it by the end of Nov. To prepare, get the latest version of Kies.” announced Samsung UK via its official Twitter feed earlier today. Kies is Samsung’s proprietary upgrading solution needed to update the handset’s software.

The 4-inch mobile powerhouse will add a host of new features to its already hefty arsenal with the upgrade to Android version 2.2 including the coveted full Flash support and device tethering. Google Maps GPS navigation and voice guidance will also land on the 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera touting iPhone challenger.

Elsewhere in the land of Google mobile operating system, the imminent arrival of version 2.3 of the hugely popular software, dubbed Gingerbread, appears closer than ever as latest reports and rumours peg the Android update to make its way to developers in SDK form as early as next week, November 11th.

Have you got a Samsung Galaxy S that is in need of a FroYo boost? Share your thoughts on the Galaxy bound Android update with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the Gingerbread arrival.

Weird News: Facebook break ups, Invisiblity cloaks

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 05:22 AM PDT

This week's more eccentric tech happenings, in association with Asylum.co.uk

Driver multitasks with book, Kindle and phone

For any women out there who doubt that a man can multitask, this video is for you. An American man was spotted driving down the highway while reading a book, using his Kindle and talking on the phone, all at the same time. This is massively dangerous, mind.

6 completely useless robots

If you think that scientists spend most of their time creating helpful gadgets, androids and gizmos then you’re mistaken, as these videos prove that some people really do have too much time on their hands. From a robo-ballet to a box that folds up t-shirts, these 6 robots have no real use other than to entertain us.

The fastest rollercoaster in the world

Are you a speed demon? Enjoy the thrill and adrenaline of a rollercoaster? Yes? Then we’ve got the perfect thing for you. The 150mp Abu Dhabi Ferrari rollercoaster (A.K.A ‘Formula Rossa’) is said to be the fastest one in the world. Terrifying.

The best video game bars

Have you ever been to a bar dedicated solely to video games? No? It's about time you did. Here’s a guide to some of the best video game bars in the States, just in case you’re travelling and have some spare time/loose change. Don’t forget a passion for drinking and games is a must if you’re going to visit.

Murder Mystery strikes online
Do you remember those old Murder Mystery dinner parties where you dress up and try to figure out who was the murderer? Well the original creator Joy Swift is launching her next mystery online, so check out the website and try to solve the murder.

Facebook predicts when you’re going to break up
According to information gathered about its 500 billion users' relationships, Facebook now know when you’re most likely to get dumped. How accurate is it though? It's one prediction we wouldn’t pay for, that’s for sure.

Invisibility cloak almost possible
The famous invisibility cloak from Harry Potter might not remain fantasy for much longer. Scientists have created a metameterial that will help towards the development of a substance with complete invisibility function. Well at least they didn’t spend their time making robots that imitate statues.

And finally: It's not tech but...

Sean Connery nude painting found
Before Connery became bond he was 00nude. An old oil painting of a nude Sean Connery that was made in 1951 has surfaced. Before his acting career took off he earned money by posing as a nude model. Well this will certainly have the ladies shaken and stirred.

Star Wars: Falcon Gunner for iPhone with augmented reality

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 05:17 AM PDT

"Don't get too cocky (with that augmented reality touchscreen game), kid."

The soon-to-be-released Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner game for iPhone will use augmented reality to allow would-be Skywalkers to live-out their space battle fantasies on real life backgrounds.

The phone uses the iPhone's camera lens to create the backdrop as the Millennium Falcon does battle with oncoming enemy TIE Fighters, effectively making any site of your chosing the battleground.

The game recreates the legendary scene from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope when Han Solo and Luke Skywalker take on The Emperor's minions from the Falcon's gun turrets.

Check out the video below to witness the first Star Wars battle over the New York skyline.

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner will be released later this month for iPhone and iPod touch.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Price: Cheapest deals in the UK

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 04:43 AM PDT

Call of Duty: Black Ops prices are wide and varied, but who has the best offer?

With the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops on sale next week, everyone’s wondering what the best deal is going to be. And sure enough the price wars have already begun, so we have decided to give you a breakdown of who’s charging what.

The cheapest deal going right now has to be HMV’s price of £7.99, however this comes at a cost since this is only the case when you trade in a copy of EA’s Medal of Honor. So unless you’ve already purchased it and are willing to give it away for the new CoD (we sure as hell would), then your out of luck. You could always go and buy a copy now just to trade in on Tuesday.

If not, both GAME and Gamestation will be selling it for £24.99 when bought with another Xbox 360 or PS3 chart game. These include Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II and Red Dead Redemption. If you don’t fancy buying another title as well then GAME will allow you to trade in Halo: Reach, Dead Rising 2, F1 2010 or FIFA 11 and get it for the same price of £24.99.

Gamestation on the other hand will give customers an extra £5 of store credit to anyone who trades in two titles when buying CoD: Black Ops. This means that, in theory, if you trade in two games that are in the charts you’re likely to get Black Ops for free with the added bonus of £5 store credit. For an extra deal, Gamestation are offering CoD: Black Ops for £20 when purchased with an Xbox 360 4GB console. Both GAME and Gamestation deals will run until Sunday November 14th.

Rumour has it that Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s will both be selling CoD: Black Ops for £25, however this is unconfirmed as of yet and it is unknown if there are requirements that need to be met for the deal. So far Tesco have made no attempt to enter the price war and remain set with the retail price of £39.90 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

As if the price war isn’t already making you go crazy for Call of Duty: Black Ops then you certainly will now, since Activision have announced that they are throwing everything at the franchise. 2011 will see the “largest offering of digital content ever” for CoD: Black Ops. So fans can hopefully expect many more maps, zombies and customisation options.

Have you pre-ordered CoD: Black Ops or are you going to line up as early as possible outside your favourite store? Let us know what your views are on the new CoD and what you plan to do about getting one. Tell us on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Apple iPhone and iPad dead pixels policy leaks online

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 04:22 AM PDT

Your iMac needs more than 15 dead pixels for Apple to take notice

Should you come home with a new Apple Macbook, iPod, iPhone or iPad with dead pixels on the screen, you’d be right to be pretty peeved. Well before you go demanding a replacement, have a look at what purports to be Apple’s dead pixels policy.

According to what’s allegedly an internal Apple document not supposed to be seen by customers, the company advises its Genius Bar Geniuses that an iMac with a screen 22 inches or larger needs to have 16 dead pixels or more before Apple will replace it. Apple is more forgiving for smaller screens, however, with just one dead pixel on an iPhone or iPod Touch needed for a replacement. Laptops from 11.6 to 15.2 inches, like the Macbook Air or Macbook Pro, are allowed up to seven.

These look like guidelines rather than hard and fast rules, however, with the disclaimer they “can be used in conjunction with information about the display to determine whether a customer’s LCD panel may be suitable for repair or replacement.”

A note at the bottom instructs Apple Store employees to explain to the customer if the number of pixels is within its specifications. It continues: “Further explain that you can replace the product, but the replacement product may have even more anomalies yet still be within specifications, and that Apple will not replace the product again if the number of anomalies in the replacement product is within specifications.”

So if you have a few dead pixels, you might be better off not trying to trade it in for a replacement. Do you think that’s fair? Let us know via the T3 Facebook and Twitter feeds.

LG Optimus One Android smartphone unveiled, out now

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 03:53 AM PDT

Bringing Android to the masses

LG has lifted the lid on its latest Android number, the Optimus One, which has launched at a wallet-friendly price point despite being a fully featured handest.

The device sports Android 2.2, a 3.2-inch screen and 3-megapixel camera. The processor at its beating heart is a 600MHz number, however, placing the Optimus squarely in the budget phone bracket - akin to the HTC Wildfire.

Speaking to TechRadar, LG’s mobile marketing chief Alex Winde says of the Optimus One that it will “really make LG stand out in the smartphone space by offering consumers the latest technology at an affordable price.” He went on to say that LG is on a mission to bring “affordable technology to the masses,” as with the Cookie series in the past.

The bonus of Android - with its rich developer community, app market and support from Google – clearly puts this a big step above the relatively meek Cookie series, which is in turn a step in the right direction for cash-strapped phone lovers. You can grab the Optimus one for free on a bargainous £20 per month contract at Carphone Warehouse

Skype hands us free wi-fi in UK for a week

Posted: 05 Nov 2010 12:20 AM PDT

Celebrate Internet Week Europe with free wi-fi courtesy Skype

Skype is sponsoring free access to public wi-fi hotspots in the UK for the duration of the first Internet Week Europe.

Internet Week Europe will last between 8 November and 12 November. The aim of the Week is to celebrate internet organisations and internet culture, as well as the its effects on the lives of people. There will be over 80 events held across London to celebrate.

If you have Skype Access (an app), you can get on to the internet from public wi-fi hotspots in the UK. The app allows users to access wi-fi from other providers and pay for it with Skype credits. During Internet Week Europe, this will be free.

You can go online using BT Openzone, The Coud and Spectrum Interactive.

David-Michel Davies, co-chairman of Internet Week Europe, told The Guardian, "Internet Week Europe is all about the impact that the web has on our daily lives, from business to entertainment. What better way to celebrate that impact than partnering with Skype to make the Internet more accessible than ever?"

With the free BT broadband on the London Underground, and now this, wi-fi is become more of an essential commodity than a luxury these days.

Will you be taking advantage of free wi-fi with Skype Access? Tell us what you think of the week and of the app on T3's Twitter and Facebook and tune in for all your tech news.
