Weird News: Stolen MacBooks and cheap beer frenzy

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:56 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech's last seven days...

Microsoft hides its tablets

Microsoft lifted the lid on its uber-platform, Windows 8 this week. In the official video, an MS exec was sat in the ‘design room’, explaining the operating system’s various features. But hang on; what’s that on the wall? Could they possibly be some blurred out Windows 8 tablets?

This Guy has my MacBook

Thief steals laptop, blogger secretly films him with app that allows remote access to the webcam. So far, so viral. If it’s true, it’s a real internet win, but there are some rumblings that it’s all just a marketing campaign, given that the blogger’s website is built by the same company as the apps. What do you think?

The PSN battle continues
The war between Sony and the hackers rattles on. Every time the gaming giant gets to its knees, another thunderous blow knocks it back to the ground. This week the Playstation Network *technically* went back up, but the website used to allow users to change their passwords (now a necessity) was taken down. When will it end?

Blogger made to retract tweets
Whether it’s about footballers’ frolics or company policy: be careful what you tweet. A Malaysian micro-blogger has been ordered by court order to tweet no less than 100 messages apologising for tarnishing the reputation of a company’s HR department. It’s probably quite hard to maintain any sort of Twitter coolness when you’re regurgitating forced apologweets.

Hacker does some hacking, gets hired by Microsoft
If you want a job at Microsoft, why not ape its founder’s youthful misgivings? Just like Bill Gates, a 14 year-old Irish hacker has been taken under MS’ wing after having pulled off a daring Call of Duty hack. He’s now being nurtured to “develop his talent for legitimate purposes.”

Google: Get a Mac
With Google’s seemingly hack-proof Chrome OS now hitting the shelves in the form of Chromebooks, you’d have thought the search giant would want to steer punters away from the competition. It’s odd, then, that Google’s Eric Schmidt should be singing the praises of a rival. “You could use a Mac instead of a PC,” he said, when asked a question about computer safety. The Google PR team collectively banged their head son the table.

Tesco glitch causes beer frenzy
People who lambaste Twitter as being useless would probably change their tune if it helped them unearth cheap booze. Word spread around the micro-blogging site like wildfire yesterday that a glitch at Tesco stores in Scotland had priced crates of select beers £9 cheaper than normal. The ensuing scramble led to car park scraps and police presence.

And finally...

The UK’s sexiest model
Never underestimate the power of people with too much time on their hands on the web. Fashion chain next has opened an online competition to find its next model, but among the would be stars is one slightly rotund chap, who’s running away with it. Online votes currently have him in the number one slot.

Tomb Raider new trailer unveiled for E3

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 05:25 AM PDT

Lara Croft is making a comeback, a huge comeback. At least that's what Square Enix is hoping.

A new trailer has surfaced for the brand new Tomb Raider title from Square Enix. Titled simply Tomb Raider the game is a total reboot in an effort to put the competitors such as Uncharted back in their place.

The video is shot in stunning HD and while it features no gameplay it becomes quickly apparent that this will be a Lara Croft adventure like no other.

Going right back to the beginning, the story sees a 21-year old Lara Croft get caught in a storm and dumped unceremoniously on a island where she must survive and escape. The game will apparently follow a free-roaming style allowing the player to explore the island at will.

Check out the visual eye candy that is the debut trailer below then head over and see our Hottest Trailers of 2011 where you can see all the top games of this year.

Qualcomm Zero Shutter Lag gets demo

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 04:41 AM PDT

Qualcomm, the company behind the Snapdragon processor has been playing around with camera tech.

Qualcomm announced at the Computex conference that they had a new technology in the pipeline that would make taking a photo that little bit easier, it's known as Zero Shutter Lag.

Essentially how it works is actually pretty nifty: when you press the camera shutter button, the phone takes five successive images at high-speed and then allows you to do one of two things. Firstly choose a whole image you think is the best, then secondly, swap certain features such as a persons facial expression, using the other four images.

It's incredibly cool to look at and is certainly Qualcomm's casual hint that their future mobile processors will be the grunt behind this power hungry feature.

Alongside the Zero Shuttter Lag function the company also showed off an ultrasonic pen which would allow a person to write notes on paper but then also have their phone convert the writing to text and then if needs be, translate it into another language.

Sound like the tech of the future or just a gimmick for the conferences? Let us know what you think at Facebook and Twitter.

Apple iCloud, iOS 5 and OS X Lion launch: Live from WWDC

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:42 AM PDT

Be here at on Monday at 6pm GMT for all the big WWDC announcements, including iCloud, iOS 5 and Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

WWDC is the tech highlight of the calendar year for Apple fans and this year's keynote from San Francisco promises to be one of the most exciting launches in years.

Steve Jobs will take the stage on Monday to announce details behind the long-awaited iCloud music storage/streaming service and take the wrapper off the iOS 5 operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Apple took the unusual step of confirming those two launches, as well as a full reveal of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, before WWDC, which leads many observers to believe that Jobs and co have a few surprise announcements up their sleeves.

There's very little suggestion that we'll see an iPhone 5 until later this year, while many observers are anticipating a slightly-tweaked iPhone 4S. We could also see a refreshed line of MacBook Air laptops with faster processors and Thunderbolt I/O tech. What surprises could Apple have in store for us?

We'll be covering the announcements live from the launch in San Francisco from 6pm GMT on Monday night, so bookmark this page and keep checking back throughout the weekend for the latest rumblings and pre-WWDC hype.

Be here at 6pm on Monday night.

Android app news: HTC launches OpenSense SDK

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Is Android fragmentation becoming an even greater concern?

We've long been a proponent of the HTC Sense UI here at T3. It's so often the sweet icing on top of that tasty Android cake that allows the company's handsets to sneak above the rest and now it could be about to get better with some third-party love.

HTC is now encouraging developers to create apps specific to Sense 3.0 through a newly-announced HTCDev programme and the launch of the OpenSense SDK.

The Taiwanese giant has already scored some big partners for the scheme, with a Google's Picassa app connecting to your Gallery application, while it has also jumped into bed with LinkedIn and Gameloft. Others are sure to follow.

The move could see a host of new apps and widgets become exclusively available to HTC handset owners, with phones running HTC Sense 3.0 and above.

It's great news for HTC fans, but with high-level concerns from OEMs, developers and users that the open source Android platform is already way too fragmented, compared to Apple's tightly-controlled iOS, HTC's move isn't exactly a step in the right direction.

Sony Ericsson has already set aside a portion of the Android Market for its own PlayStation Certified games, while there's also a host of apps that are only available to handsets running the dual-core Tegra 2 chip.

Sony Hacked Again

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:01 AM PDT

Hackers have broken into Sony’s network and stolen one million users’ personal data, it has been reported.

LulzSec, a small team of hackers, claimed responsibility for the intrusion into SonyPictures.com.

In a statement released on their website, they said, “We recently broke into SonyPictures.com and compromised over 1,000,000 users' personal information, including passwords, email addresses, home addresses, dates of birth, and all Sony opt-in data associated with their accounts.”

The group claimed the hack was highlighting the lack of security on Sony’s servers.

"SonyPictures.com was owned by a very simple SQL injection, one of the most primitive and common vulnerabilities, as we should all know by now. From a single injection, we accessed EVERYTHING. Why do you put such faith in a company that allows itself to become open to these simple attacks?" LulzSec said.

Sony has said it is investigating the claims.

We’ll update the story when we know more.

PS4 and Xbox 720 not needed yet says Take-Two

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:59 AM PDT

With E3 literally round the corner games creators have been promoting the potential of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The CEO of Take-Two games has come forward saying that our current consoles still have plenty of room for innovative creations and the need for a replacement is just not there yet.

With the hype surrounding E3 reaching fever pitch and the arrival of a Wii sequel now certain, games creators have been keen to highlight the differences between the Wii and other consoles.

Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnich was keen to point out that just because the Wii was getting a replacement this certainly wasn't an indication that other companies should follow, talking to MCV he said.

"If you exclude Wii - which one could argue is at least partially a different market than Xbox 360 and PS3...we still have plenty of room to push the limits of creativity in the current console generation"

Will you be eagerly awaiting the arrival of Nintendo's latest creation codenamed 'Project Cafe'? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

HTC Flyer: OnLive cloud gaming on tablets (video)

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:56 AM PDT

Is this the future of gaming?

We’ve spilled the beans on OnLive’s plan to expand and take the UK by storm, but one of the more intriguing elements of the cloud gaming service’s plans was the revelation that it will be heading to tablets.

As it turns out, OnLive’s new universal controller will work natively with most tablets coming to market, gifting OnLive subscribers access to console and PC quality games straight on their tablet’s screen. Assuming you’ve got a decent WiFi connection, you should be able to game without lag on either an iPad or Android tab as soon as the service arrives on these shores in the Autumn.

How does it work in practice? Engadget’s had a hands-on play with the service, and we have to say it looks mightily impressive. Check out the video below to see for yourself:

Toshiba Thrive tablet on sale July 10

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:40 AM PDT

Is Tosh ready for the tablet fight?

Toshiba is set to join the likes of the iPad 2 and the BlackBerry PlayBook with its 10.1-inch Thrive tablet offering which is set to go on sale in the US from July.

The tablet will run on Android Honeycomb 3.1 and pack a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, HDMI support, a 10.1-inch 1280x800 panel and a 5 megapixel camera round the back.

Resolution+ video enhancement will allow for the upscaling of standard definition videos to that of near HD colour and contrast ratios, while the upcoming device’s party piece comes in the form of its removable battery, a feature that few of the current breed of portable tablets boast.

Our US counterparts will get their hands on the Thrive tablet first, with pricing ranging from $429 (£260) for an 8GB model, to $579 (£355) for a 32GB model.

There's no details on UK pricing or a release date, but we hope that we'll see the Thrive before the end of 2011.
