The Daily Crunch 10/21/16 Big internet troubles, chipmaker consolidation continued and space success metrics. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for October 21, 2016. And if you're not excited about Nintendo Switch, I don't want to know you. 1. U.S. internet under attack A major DDOS attack took down a lot of prominent websites in the U.S. east today, including Twitter, Shopify, Spotify, Github and many more. Security experts are saying this is a significant outage, even if it seemed like only something that was minorly inconvenient for end users. The attack targeted DNS provider Dyn, and effectively knocked out the ability to load a huge number of sites and services for at least an hour or two. 
2. Qualcomm and NXP Semiconductor near a deal Qualcomm and NXP Semiconductor could be one of the largest chip-related deals in history. Qualcomm is said to be set to acquire NXP for around $110 per share, or upwards of $37 billion. The acquisition would bring together two huge players in chipmaking, a key area for the future of tech including connected cars. 3. The election has been good for viewership, at least The debates have been pretty terrible so far, in that it gives a global stage to a man who should not even have a Twitter account. But they're good for online media streaming viewership, including on YouTube, where they've been the most-watched political programming streamed on the platform ever. 4. 1 for 2 isn't half bad The ExoMars mission by the ESA and Russian Space Federation is semi-successful, but that's good in Mars terms, where a lot of landers crash and go dark. The ExoMars outcome includes a successful orbit entry for a satellite designed to scout for trace elements including water, and what looks like a botched landing for a craft that was attempting to land on the surface and report back. 5. Surface surging The Microsoft Surface may be the enemy of Bill Belichick, but it's doing lots of good for Microsoft. I've had a lot of business industry analysts tell me people prefer the Windows devices to iPads because they have more potential to actually replace both a computer and a tablet, and it looks like they're thinking correctly. 6. Nintendo switches on Nintendo has a new console coming in March, and now we know what it looks like – crazy. But crazy good; the hybrid gaming device is a full console at home and a portable plaything on the go. I think it looks fantastic, can't wait for Nintendo to show us more. |
