THE DAILY CRUNCH
MONDAY, JULY 17 2017 By Darrell Etherington

SoundCloud says it's not going anywhere, Amazon looks at the chat market and Star Wars fans get somewhere to rest their weary heads. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for July 17, 2017.

1. SoundCloud says it will survive

SoundCloud is in dire financial trouble, but now it says it will survive — after potentially receiving some help from Chance the Rapper, who released a new single on the audio hosting platform.

We reported the platform was nearly out of money, after it laid off a lot of its employees, but co-founder Alex Ljung then posted a response that says "SoundCloud is here to stay," without offering specifics as to how. Hopefully there's a plan behind the bravado.

2. Is Amazon going after messaging?

It looks like Amazon wants to try and go after the messaging space, with a cross-platform messaging app that puts everyone you want to get in touch with in one place, with rich media communication, apps and more. It sounds like Amazon is trying to replicate the experience of platforms like WeChat, but it's a mature market to go after at this stage.

3. Disney's Star Wars hotel will let you live your own galactic adventure

I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan but I have to admit that this Star Wars-themed hotel for Disney's new parks based on the franchise with built-in LARPing sounds like a bit much. Perhaps there's an option for all the hotel goodness without the storyline, which would be more my speed.

4. Apple wants to put an iPad in every patient's hands

How do you make people receiving medical treatment feel more like agents of their own care? Perhaps the secret is giving them an iPad. That's what Apple is exploring with Cerar-Sinai in LA and Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego, to help determine if giving patients iPads helps them feel more in control of their own destiny.

5. This Cheetah is a life saver

MIT's Cheetah 3 is designed to save lives; version 3 of this robotic aid bot debuted at TechCrunch's Sessions: Robotics event in Cambridge today. It's faster than ever, and powered by Alexa, too.

6. Apple's gift for World Emoji Day

Check out some of the latest emojis shown off by Apple for World Emoji Day. These are part of the new Emoji 5.0 standard pack that Apple will deliver via updates to its operating systems this fall, and they look good. T-Rex for life.

7. This is the cutest actual space robot ever

Japan's Int-Ball is an autonomous, free-floating drone camera designed to help with research and work on the International Space Station. But no one said it couldn't also be the most adorable thing you've ever seen.
