Here's your Daily Crunch for October 26, 2018. 1. Google terminated 48 employees for sexual harassment in the last two years Yesterday, The New York Times published a bombshell story about Google's payout to Andy Rubin following reports of sexual misconduct by the Android creator. (Rubin described these as "false allegations" that are "part of a smear campaign.") In the wake of the piece, CEO Sundar Pichai and VP People Operations Eileen Naughton co-signed a memo sent to Google staff detailing what it says is "an increasingly hard line on inappropriate conduct by people in positions of authority." 2. Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, raises $1.25 billion It pays to have the most popular game in the world. 3. What to expect from Apple's iPad event A new iPad Pro is all but a given at this point. There are also rumors of an iPad Mini 5 and the long-awaited arrival of AirPower. 4. Microsoft closes its $7.5B purchase of code-sharing platform GitHub The acquisition is yet another sign of how Microsoft has been doubling down on courting developers and presenting itself as a neutral partner. 5. Snapchat loses 2M more users in Q3 as shares sink to new low User count is still up 5 percent year-over-year, though. 6. More than half of crypto news sites are pay-for-play That's according to some sleuthing by Corin Faife at Breaker. (To be clear: Attempting to bribe journalists is nothing new, but what's shocking is the large number of crypto publications that seem to be willing to go along.) 7. Chat fiction startup Hooked unveils 'Dark Matter,' its first feature-length thriller The story debuts today on Snapchat, with a new chapter coming out every day until Tuesday, October 30. According to CEO Prerna Gupta, the full script totals 32,000 words — in other words, it's the length of a feature film script or short novel. |
