IRL: Logitech Y-R0026 Bluetooth keyboard, Apple MacBook and a Virgin America flight with the Series 5 Chromebook

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

In this, the last IRL until after we get back from CES, we've got a tale from Brian, who spent his Virgin America flight home to the west coast playing with his first Chromebook. Meanwhile, Andy defends the idea of spending $130 on a Bluetooth keyboard, and Mr. Christopher Trout explains why he's loathe to recycle his three year-old MacBook, even if it has devolved into a glorified media hub. Before we turn around and give you wall-to-wall coverage of all the new stuff, meet us past the break to spend a few minutes with some oldies-but-goodies.

A Virgin America flight with Samsung's Chromebook
How could Virgin America possibly get any better? How about a complimentary Series 5 Chromebook for cross-country flights? The ambient-music-loving airline worked in conjunction with Google to offer folks a chance to try Chrome OS -- if they happened to be traveling between New York and San Francisco, and were willing to hand over a credit card deposit and bear with a few well-timed ads. I jumped at the opportunity to immerse myself in the cloud (yes, those clouds too); the free WiFi sealed the deal.

In a lot of ways, the Samsung Chromebook really is an ideal traveling companion. It's a nice size, with a solid keyboard and it offered up plenty of battery life -- an absolute must for frequent travelers. This being my first extended period with Chrome OS, there were some quirks that took some getting used to -- namely, downloading a Word doc and then finding it in the unintuitive file manager. I also missed a fair number of desktop apps (why doesn't Spotify have a web interface yet?), though Picnik for Photoshop and other stand-ins do an all-right job in a pinch.

As stated by Dana in her review, the trackpad is a bit wonky and certainly doesn't compare to the glass one on the MacBook Air, to which I've grown accustomed. Also, the WiFi was less than perfect, though I'm ready to chalk that up to the fact the network was likely overloaded, thanks to, you know, all of the Chromebooks Virgin America was handing out. Still, it did serve as a gentle reminder of just how dependent the operating system is on having a solid connection at all times.

I can't say I'm ready to make the switch to a Chromebook, but hey, if Virgin wants to keep handing them out on cross country trips, I'm game.

Logitech Y-R0026 Bluetooth Keyboard

When I purchased my iPad 2, the goal was to fill that gloomy void between the interactive hassles of my 2.5-inch phone and the bulk of my laptop. But for any of my text-related projects, such as my final assignment for the 2011 school year, it still wasn't ideal. So, I ponied up and purchased a Logitech Y-R0026 Fold-Up Bluetooth Keyboard in an effort to bring a pinch of input familiarity to the whole ordeal. When I'm on the go, I've actually come to prefer this setup. The Y-R0026 is a full-size keyboard, complete with unique iPad 2 keyboard shortcuts. It may seem minor, but you can also control your music volume and selection outside of the iPod app, once again emulating that "laptop feel." The keys themselves are smooth and quiet, but every now and then there's a bit of noticeable lag, which is my one and only complaint.

I didn't realize how much I actually liked the device until my recent nine-hour Thanksgiving road trip to Atlanta. I tweeted, emailed and enjoyed several episodes of The Office, all on one charge. The Keyboard itself can chug 500 typing hours before needing a charge. It was also something I wouldn't have been able to do if I lugged my MacBook in and out of fast food stops -- not to mention, I was happy not to have to struggle to see text on that glare-stricken screen while simultaneously charring my thighs. Being a stand + keyboard mash-up, the slender plastic build looks a bit insubstantial, but the iPad locks in securely with a little pressure' moreover, all of the functions (except the rear-facing camera) are accessible. At $129.99, it's hardly the cheapest mobile keyboard out there, but if you're on the road a lot I'd definitely give this guy some consideration.

A three-year-old MacBook

Just this summer, Apple put the final nail in the coffin of the white MacBook, but I'm not quite ready to send mine to pasture. My 13-incher is nearly three years old and while it's now little more than a glorified media player that sits alongside the TV and stereo, it's served me well. It's suffered its fair share of abuse over the past 1,000 or so days.

Like so many MacBooks of its generation it's missing two long, slender chunks of its frame where the screen's bezel bumpers meet its base. Its display was replaced earlier this year after a run-in with a 90-pound American bulldog, and, thanks to my clumsiness, it's been in and out of the shop more times than I can count. Its over-active fan makes it virtually unusable in public places, the battery has ceased to hold a charge and it takes an awfully long time to boot, but through it all, it's never failed to do its job.

It was my primary machine when I signed on to Engadget just over a year ago and even accompanied me to my first Game Developers Conference. Its prominent position at the center of my home is, admittedly, more symbolic than anything else, but I'm not quite ready to let it go the way of my old, dead PowerBook just yet.

Insync: Wave 'Bye, Bye, Bye' to Dropbox

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 09:36 AM PST

There's another cloud based storage service planning to knock DropBox from its perch, only this one's also got the benefit of an amusing name. Insync offers all the same online-file management and sharing facilities that you'll be familiar with, but the company's tooled up for a price war. It's using Google storage as a backbone, charging only $0.25 per GB/year rather than DropBox's $2.00 -- with the hope that people follow their wallets and the promise of deep integration into Mountain View's online services including being able to edit your documents online. (Although we're not sure what would happen if Google's long rumored GDrive suddenly appears.) After the break we've got a video by Marques Brownlee that tours the service which we assure you, is free of Joey Fatone.

Silk ported from Kindle Fire to rooted Android devices, other web browsers now jealous

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 09:12 AM PST

Give it time and eventually someone will port your favorite browser to everything, even your toaster, if you're lucky. A group of developers on the XDA-forums has begun sharing how to port the Silk web browser found on the Amazon Kindle Fire to various Android devices. To accomplish this, you'll need a rooted Android device, whereupon you can download a package file and install it to the /system/lib directory with permissions set to the same as the other files in that folder. Users can choose to install any of the .apks that they want to side load, but will need to ensure that they also move the Silk apk from /data/app to /system/app. After a reboot, the Silk browser should be good to go, complete with access to Amazon's cloud-based services through your favorite device. That's just our quaint little summary, though: for the full instructions, you'll most definitely want to hit up the source link.

Quanta sues AMD, claims it sold defective products

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 08:41 AM PST

Yikes. Quanta -- also known as the planet's largest contract maker of laptops -- has just slapped a nasty lawsuit on the world's second-largest chipmaker. According to Bloomberg, Quanta is alleging that AMD and ATI sold chips that "didn't meet heat tolerances and were unfit for particular purposes." Those chips were then used in NEC-labeled machines, and caused them to "malfunction" in some regard. No big deal? Hardly. In the complaint, Quanta states that it has "suffered significant injury to prospective revenue and profits," and it's seeking a jury trial and damages for good measure.

As if that weren't harsh enough, the suit also claims "breach of warranty, negligent misrepresentation, civil fraud and interference with a contract." When pinged for comment, AMD's spokesman, Michael Silverman stated: "AMD disputes the allegations in Quanta's complaint and believes they are without merit. AMD is aware of no other customer reports of the alleged issues with the AMD chip that Quanta used, which AMD no longer sells. "In fact, Quanta has itself acknowledged to AMD that it used the identical chip in large volumes in a different computer platform that it manufactured for NEC without such issues." Somewhere, Intel has to be smirking.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos review

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 08:00 AM PST

Thin and light may be the name of the game for many when it comes to mobile computing, but there's still plenty of folks who need a full-featured portable machine. Samsung's Series 7 Chronos is just such a PC, packing an optical drive, numpad and discrete graphics beneath a brushed aluminum façade. While it may look like just another MacBook Pro clone running Windows 7, this Sammy's got some surprises up its sleeve that set it apart from Apple's offering (aside from a $1,000 price difference) and other laptops running Redmond's OS, for that matter. To find out what the Series 7 brings to the table and how it stacks up against its competition, you'll have to read on past the break. Let's get to it, shall we?

Look and feel

We liked what we saw when we first laid eyes on Samsung's Series 7 earlier this year, and little has changed since then. Upon pulling the Samsung out of its packaging, the 15-inch laptop cuts a handsome, if understated figure, with a beautiful layer of brushed aluminum covering the lid, keyboard deck and bezel. It's a darker shade than the aluminum we're accustomed to, the pewter color giving the impression that the Chronos is wrapped in the stuff usually seen covering high-end kitchen appliances and Doc Brown's favorite time machine. We think it's an appealing package, particularly since you get the luxe appearance of stainless steel without the weight gain.

There's only a modicum of branding adorning the machine, with a textured silver Samsung badge on the lid, a painted logo on the bezel beneath the display and unsightly ATI, Intel and Windows 7 stickers affixed just south of the keyboard. A chrome power button resides above the right side of the grid and a 1.3 megapixel webcam's centered above the screen. While the topside of the Series 7 is all posh metal, the underside and edges are, alas, made of comparatively low-rent plastic.

The Chronos has a slot-loading DVD-RW drive and a single USB 2.0 port on its right hand side. Moving around to the left edge, you'll find mini-VGA, HDMI and dual USB 3.0 ports along with a Kensington lock, 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack and a hinged RJ45 connector. The Ethernet port is hinged to accommodate a full-sized Ethernet connector despite the laptop's skinny profile (caused by a beveled underside meant to give the laptop a more svelte appearance). An SD slot is on the front of the machine, and the bottom sports a woofer speaker grille, cooling vents and a removable panel that provides easy access to the machine's memory.

Despite its solid construction, we do have a few niggles regarding its build quality.

Overall, the Series 7 Chronos is a sturdy laptop, with zero flex in its keyboard deck and a robust screen hinge. It also sports a slim silhouette, checking in at .94 inches (24mm) thin, which is .03 inches slimmer than Sony's svelte VAIO S. and at 5.05 pounds (2.29kg), it's lighter than the 15-inch competition from Cupertino that weighs 5.6 pounds (2.54kg), but heavier than the aforementioned 4.4 pound (2kg) Sony. Despite its solid construction, we do have a few niggles regarding its build quality. For one, the laptop's skin is made of several separate sheets of metal and the plastic. This isn't an issue in and of itself, but the pieces aren't fitted together as well as we'd like. There are small gaps on either edge where the display bezel meets the lid, plus the metal keyboard deck doesn't fit flush with the plastic bottom, resulting in a protruding ridge of plastic around the palm rest. Hardly a huge deal, but the fit and finish are somewhat disappointing at this $1000 + price point, and it doesn't compare favorably to the clean look of a unibody chassis, either.

Keyboard and trackpad

The Series 7 has a pretty nice grid of backlit buttons, and Samsung managed to fit in a number pad as well. Typing on the Chronos was a joy, as the chiclets are located in a recessed channel in the deck to allow for a nice, long throw with each press, and the backlit keys were easily found by our touch-typing fingers. Our one nit to pick with the grid: a softer finish akin to the Lenovo U300S' keys would've provided a more pleasant tactile typing experience.

Our time with the trackpad was a less pleasant experience, however. It's a clickpad unit made by Elan, and it suffers from many of the foibles that seem to plague many of the Windows 7 breed. Left clicks often registered as right clicks, while our attempts to move the cursor were often taken for double clicks -- resulting in dragging windows or highlighting text unintentionally. And while typing, the cursor would randomly hop elsewhere in the document, a problem fixed only by hitting F5 to turn off the trackpad. We had better luck with multitouch gestures, as two-fingered scrolling was fairly reliable and smooth, three-fingered swipes for page up and page down worked well and four-finger swipes to bring up a cover flow-esque carousel of our open windows did too. Pinch-to-zoom was functional, but so choppy in its operation that getting to scale properly was a chore.

Display and sound

One of the real selling points with the Series 7 Chronos is its 15.6-inch, 300-nit, 1600 x 900 display, which gives multitaskers plenty of screen real estate to play with. The resolution leaves something to be desired, however, when compared to the 1080p panels found in the XPS 15z and VAIO S. Samsung has done consumers a solid by using a matte-finish LCD (hallelujah!), so screen glare is never an issue, and the rail-thin bezel surrounding it is the skinniest thing this side of the Shuriken display in Dell's XPS 14z. Viewing angles are mediocre, as the LCD washes out considerably when moving the screen towards you, and images turn to negatives and whites turn a sickly yellowish hue when moved away. Side-to-side viewability is quite good, however, and provides near 180-degree viewing.

Audio comes courtesy of two 1.5-watt speakers and a woofer -- though we think Samsung's taken some liberties with that description given the laptop's limited bass range. Sound reproduction is decent otherwise, as the mids and highs of Freddy Mercury's lyrical stylings from Queen on Fire: Live at the Bowl came through clearly at every volume level. Speaker sound while watching movies was respectable, too, though the audio wasn't as rich sounding as on a MacBook Pro. The Series 7 also comes with Sound Alive 3D software, which applies sound effects (read: different EQ settings) tailored for music, movies and speech along with an advanced mode to let you choose from 25 other presets as well. We fooled around with all of them and found the standard setting suited our ears best.

Performance and battery life

For this review, we had the top-end Chronos configured with Intel's 2.2GHz Core i7 2675QM CPU with integrated HD Graphics 3000, a discrete Radeon HD 6750M GPU, 8GB of RAM, a 7200RPM 750GB HDD, plus 8GB of flash memory on the motherboard enabling Samsung's ExpressCache technology. Sammy claims it's automatic caching shaves 45 percent off normal boot up times and helps your most used applications launch up to two times faster depending upon your PC's settings. The Chronos starts up fairly quickly, as boot times were consistently under 40 seconds. However, that time didn't change whether we had the ExpressCache feature turned on or off, so we were unable to confirm the company's claims.

In general and workday use, the Series 7 performed admirably, letting us multitask with ease -- it didn't slow down even as we had multiple HD YouTube videos playing, 15 tabs open in Chrome, a chat client running and typing away on this here review. While the laptop would heat up and the fan would kick into gear while watching videos or performing graphically intense tasks, it didn't run nearly as hot or as loud as the MacBook Pro does under similar loads. Plus, there's a silent mode hotkey to turn off the fan if it gets too noisy. During regular web browsing and word processing, the laptop never heated up past lukewarm. We also played a little Warhammer 40K Space Marine to really put the GPU through it's paces, and managed 60fps while wandering around between battles, and frame rates dipped to 48fps while cutting our way through hordes of orcs.

The benchmark scores back up our snappy user experience, as the Chronos scored an impressive 8,891 on 3DMark06, though it didn't fare quite as well on PCMark Vantage.

PCMark Vantage
3DMark06
Battery Life
Samsung Series 7 (2.2GHz Core i7-2675QM, Intel HD 3000 / AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1GB) 7,824 8,891 5:47
Dell XPS 15z (2.7GHz Core i7-2620M, NVIDIA GeForce GT525M) 8,023 7,317 3:41 (Optimus disabled) / 4:26 (Optimus enabled)
Lenovo IdeaPad U400 (2.4GHz Core i5-2430M, Intel HD 3000 / AMD Radeon HD 6470M 1GB) 7,281 4,463 4:18
Dell XPS 14z (2.8GHz Core i7-2640M, Intel HD Graphics 3000 / NVIDIA GeForce GT520M 1GB) 7,982 5,414 4:54
HP Envy 14 (2.3GHz Core i5-2410M, Intel HD Graphics 3000 / AMD Radeon HD 6630M 1GB) 6,735 7,214 3:55
Sony VAIO S 15-inch (2.40GHz Core i5-2430M, Intel HD Graphics 3000 / AMD Radeon HD 6630M 1GB) 5,632 6,898 3:59 (stamina mode) / 8:58 (stamina mode, slice battery)
Dell Inspiron 14z (2.3GHz Core i5-2410M, Intel HD Graphics 3000) 6,177 4,079 6:37
Notes: the higher the score the better. For 3DMark06, the first number reflects score with GPU off, the second with it on.

All that computing power doesn't mean meager battery life, either. In our standard rundown testing, with a video looping off the hard drive, WiFi on and screen brightness set at 65 percent, the Series 7 managed an impressive five hours and 47 minutes -- and that was with five percent of the juice left in the eight-cell lithium polymer battery. In general workday use, checking email, web surfing and word processing in Notepad, we got well over six hours out of our Series 7.

Configuration options

As we said before, we performed our review on the high-end Chronos, but there are three other Series 7 laptops available. On the low end, $1,000 gets you the same Core i7 2675QM CPU as our test unit, but exchanges Radeon graphics for an AMD Xeymour HD 6490 card and lacks the 8GB SSD. There's also a 14-inch model packing a Core i5 2430M CPU and Radeon HD 6490 GPU for $1,099. Lastly, there's a $1,149 model with identical hardware to our tester, but comes with Windows 7 Home Premium on board (as do the other cheaper models) instead of Windows 7 Professional.

Software

The Series 7 comes with its share of preloaded bloat, though there's not an extensive amount of it. Skype, Norton Internet Security and Online Backup, and Cyberlink Media Suite and YouCam software are the third-party applications on board, and Samsung's smartphone syncing software, Kies, is included as well. Easy Settings is a useful little program that lets you access your wireless networks, power management, sound and display options and other settings from one place. There's also a software launcher that populates an OSX-like app tray at the bottom of the screen. A bundle of games from WildTangent is included as well, ensuring you have plenty of time wasting options aside from Solitaire and Minesweeper.

The competition

Ultrabooks may be getting more popular these days, but they aren't for everyone -- some folks want optical drives and discrete graphics, and fortunately, there are plenty of mainstream 14- and 15-inch laptops like the Series 7 that fit the bill.

Dell brings a couple of XPS machines to this mid-range party, the 14z and 15z. Each has the aluminum exterior that's popular these days, but come with design flourishes (see: chrome trim and lattice-work speaker grilles) not found on the austere Samsung. Round Rock's laptops will give you similar performance to the Series 7 at a similar price, but you'll trade the Chronos' matte screen, numpad-equipped keyboard and superior battery life for a better trackpad and higher-res (but glossy) screen.

Lenovo's IdeaPad U400 is another Chronos competitor, and comes with an identical Core i5-2430M to the 14-inch Series 7, so their performance should be similar, though the U400 lacks the Samsung's SD card slot and backlit keys. The Chronos gets the nod in graphics with a slight bump in the GPU department pushing pictures to a non-glossy higher-res screen (1600 x 900 vs. 1366 x 768). However, the U400 does have seamless construction and can be had for $200 less.

Sony's VAIO SE packs neither the hardware punch nor the rigid build of its Korean counterpart, but its LCD panel packs more pixels and offers a Blu-ray drive. Apple's basic MacBook Pro 15 model is another entrant that appeals with a higher performance CPU, identical discrete graphics and unibody construction. But, it comes with half the RAM, a slower and smaller HDD and lower-res glossy screen in a heavier package that's $500 more than the Series 7. HP's new Envy laptops may also give the Chronos a run for its money, but we'll have to wait until they are released to know for sure.

Wrap-up

Samsung's Series 7 Chronos is a good, but not great laptop. It's got lengthy battery life and provides quite the hardware punch for a reasonable, if not bargain price. It's graced with restrained good looks, and has a lot of the features we love in a laptop, but its build quality lags behind (relatively) similarly specced offerings from Dell and Apple. In short, we don't think you'll be disappointed should you decide to plunk down a grand or more for the Samsung, but you won't wake up thanking your lucky stars you get to use it every day, either.

Nokia: 'No solar cellphones from us'

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 07:33 AM PST

Nokia's finished its research project to see if it's worth jamming solar panels onto cellphones. A customized C1-02 (with a panel for a back cover) was tested in the Arctic circle, Sweden, Kenya and on the Baltic Sea. Due to the small size of the average device, however, the prototypes couldn't collect enough energy to properly recharge the battery in most scenarios. In conclusion? Unless you fancy buying a solar-phone the size of a barn door, it's probably not worth the effort -- at least for now.

Transformer Prime falls at the hands of XDA dev, rooted

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 07:05 AM PST

'Twas just days ago that we reported upon developer uproar over the locked bootloader currently taking up residence on the ASUS Transformer Prime -- and now it looks like some of that pain has been alleviated. A tinkerer over at xda-developers has published viperMOD Primer to help you easily root -- or unroot -- your shiny new laptop-tablet hybrid. The software necessary to apply the mod is only available for Windows at the moment, although developer -viperboy- is promising a Linux version in the not-too-distant future. Go ahead, pop the hood on your Prime and take a good look around.

Update: While XDA member -viperboy- created the viperMOD Primer tool, it should be noted that the NachoRoot exploit used by viperMOD was developed by TeamAndIRC.

[Thanks, Gez]

Cisco hangs up on Umi 'Personal Telepresence' flop

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 06:33 AM PST

A whole separate box and remote just for video chat? For as much as $600, plus a $10 per month subscription (HDTV and broadband not included)? It was always doubtful whether the Umi telepresence kit would catch on, but now Cisco has crushed those doubts by quietly crushing both the 1080p and cheaper 720p versions of the product. No press release or announcement; just a disembodied voice at the end of a technical support line advising callers that the product is "under evaluation," and a behind-the-scenes nudge to Business Insider that it really has been discontinued. It's not yet clear what will happen to the monthly service for existing customers, but if it gets disrupted then Cisco will surely have to come clean. Heck, for $600 we'd expect a personalized hi-def video apology.

Roku unveils Streaming Stick, squeezes box into MHL dongle

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 06:14 AM PST

The latest innovation from Roku CEO Anthony Wood and his squad? After reducing the size of its players to a mere hockey puck, it has now managed to fit all the necessary hardware into this tiny dongle, that plugs into the HDMI port of MHL-compatible HDTVs. Mobile High-Definition Link ports, were intended for users to hook up their mobile phones simply for control and charging all-in-one, but also powers this unit which packs WiFi and all into one tiny package and can even be controlled by the TV's remote. Now, HDTV manufacturers can build TVs that function as dumb displays without it, but become smart TVs featuring the Roku experience we've become accustomed to just by plugging one in. The other benefit? No more obsolete smart TV hardware when the updates stop flowing. While Roku has a decent track record in this regard, if you ever need a more powerful unit, it's a lot simpler to swap out a simple dongle (expect a good/better/best pattern for functions like gaming, etc., following the player line) to add features than changing an entire HDTV.

Best Buy's Insignia-branded line is the first scheduled to take advantage with pack-ins when the stick debuts in the second half of the year, although it will work with TVs from other manufacturers (Samsung, Toshiba, etc.) that meet the spec, but we don't figure the big boys will be willing to sacrifice their existing smart TV platforms very quickly. We're told the price (it will be available both as a standalone and pack-in) should be in a similar range to current Roku players, which the company also announced it has shipped 2.5 million of to date. Check after the break for the press release and pics showing how it fits in an HDTV.

Roku Breaks the Smart TV Mold

New Roku Streaming Stick Integrates "Smart" Experience into TVs Instantly

Saratoga, Calif. – Jan. 4, 2012 – Building on the success of the award-winning Roku streaming players, Roku® today unveiled a new solution to make a better Smart TV. The new Roku Streaming StickTM is a cordless device about the size of a standard USB flash drive that will plug into a TV to instantly transform it into a Smart TV. The Roku Streaming Stick will feature built-in WiFi, processor, memory and software to deliver Roku's growing collection of streaming entertainment. With these new Smart TVs, consumers will enjoy a fully integrated high-definition streaming experience.

"Insignia is proud to be among the first manufacturers to pair the Roku Streaming Stick with a TV," said Scott Jacobi, Director of Exclusive Brands at Best Buy. "The Roku Streaming Stick provides an elegant and easy over-the-top streaming solution for customers who want the full experience of a Smart TV without adding an external set box, HDMI cable and power adapter to their TV. Insignia looks forward to rolling out our first MHL-enabled TVs compatible with the Roku Streaming Stick in 2012 at Best Buy."

"Roku was the first to stream Netflix to the TV and since then has been applauded for delivering a first rate Netflix experience," said Greg Peters, vice president at Netflix. "Now Roku is taking streaming innovation to the next level and giving consumers a seamless Smart TV experience. The Roku Streaming Stick is a great solution for Netflix because it allows us to deliver the Netflix experience found on the Roku platform to potentially any TV."

Today's Smart TVs become outdated in just a couple years because as software changes are made the hardware needs upgrading – that is if the software is even updated. That kind of short hardware product cycle is expected with a mobile device such as a smart phone, but consumers generally keep their TVs for six to eight years. By moving the streaming platform to a stick that's easily replaceable, consumers no longer have to worry about their large-screen Smart TV becoming obsolete before its time.

"The Roku platform has been extremely successful as a stand-alone streaming device," said Roku Founder and CEO Anthony Wood. "Extending the Roku streaming experience through the Roku Streaming Stick to Smart TVs is a natural next step for the market."

"Smart TV manufacturers have struggled to find an application platform that sticks with consumers especially since software is not their area of expertise," said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst at Parks Associates. "The Roku Streaming Stick is a game changer for the Smart TV market. It takes the leading streaming platform and integrates into the TV in a way that no one has been able to do The Roku Streaming Stick will not require any cables including a separate power source, and can be controlled by the TV remote. Like Roku players, it will deliver the more than 400 channels found on the Roku platform today and will benefit from regular, free software updates and channel enhancements.

The Roku Streaming Stick will be available this fall. It can be bundled with a TV in retail or sold separately for consumers to use with their own TVs.

The Roku Streaming Stick will plug into MHL-enabled HDMI ports on TVs. MHL is a new standard that uses the HDMI connector on TVs to deliver power and other critical elements for the streaming experience. MHL is currently adopted by nearly 100 hardware and manufacturing vendors including Nokia Corporation; Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.; Silicon Image, Inc.; Sony Corporation; and Toshiba Corporation who are joint founders of the MHL Consortium.

Roku is the leading streaming platform. Since launching the first Netflix streaming player in 2008, Roku has delivered entertainment to nearly 2.5 million streaming players in the U.S. Roku features more than 400 entertainment channels including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Pandora, Angry Birds and HBO GO. Award-winning Roku streaming players are renowned for their ease of use, value and selection of content. Roku players are sold through leading retailers in the U.S. Roku is founded by Anthony Wood, inventor of the DVR. For more information about Roku, visit www.roku.com.

App developers unite! Or at least organize yourselves a bit better

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 05:56 AM PST

It's only right that the creative individuals behind a multi-billion dollar industry should have access to their own professional body, but for some reason the idea has yet to take hold. That could change at CES, when Jon Potter -- formerly of the Digital Media Association -- will start selling membership to a new outfit called the Application Developers Alliance. His pitch will open with the concept that "there's an interesting space in the application developer community that isn't really organized" and then move on to offer services like an online collaborative network, shared product-testing facilities, discount training schemes and cloud services, and even government lobbying over issues like privacy and IP. Who knows? That sort of thinking could ultimately lead to a fully-fledged union movement to stand up to fat-cat platform owners and let them know who's boss, but first things first eh?

PayPal's Scott Thompson becomes CEO of Yahoo; signing bonus probably stuck in a frozen account

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 05:30 AM PST

Think you're having a good day? Try being Tim Morse, who was just relieved of the seemingly impossible task known as "being the Chief Executive Officer of Yahoo." After years of turmoil and bouts of bickering with Alibaba, Yahoo has just appointed Scott Thompson as its new CEO -- marking the introduction of a new year with the introduction of a new head honcho. Mr. Morse, who was standing in as interim CEO, will resume his role as Chief Financial Officer, and Thompson will become a member of the company's Board of Directors starting January 9th. Scott served most recently as President of PayPal, where -- so far as we can tell -- he did nothing to remove the draconian 'dispute' process that has jaded so many souls belonging to slighted eBayers. Bitterness aside, his primary focus in his new role will be to "continue the strategic review process to identify the best approaches for the company and its shareholders," and the release makes clear that Yahoo is "considering a wide range of opportunities for the company's business, as well as specific investments or dispositions of assets." Sounds fun, no?

With the ultimate goal of delivering the value our shareholders expect, my immediate focus will be on getting to know the entire team and hearing more from all Yahoo!s, working closely with the engineers and product teams, and diving deeply into our products and services to learn more about what our more than 700 million users find most engaging and useful. I will also be working directly with our region leaders and sales teams globally to get a clearer understanding of the needs of our advertisers and publishers. Clearly, speed is important but we will attack both the opportunity ahead and the competitive challenges with an appropriate balance of urgency and thoughtfulness. I cannot wait to get started."

"Scott's primary focus will be on the core business, and as CEO and director, he will work closely with the Board as we continue the strategic review process to identify the best approaches for the Company and its shareholders. As part of this process, Yahoo! is considering a wide range of opportunities for the Company's business, as well as specific investments or dispositions of assets," added Bostock.

"We are all grateful to Tim Morse for leading the company with a steady hand during the last several months. Nokia Car Mode for Symbian Belle now ready for download

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 04:34 AM PST

Nokia loves motorists and is showering them with gifts over at the Nokia Store to prove it. Well, one gift at least: the free-of-charge Car Mode app, which helps to transform your Symbian Belle smartphone into a turn-by-turn sat nav, with all the power of Drive, traffic updates, Music and voice calling presented in a more dash-friendly manner. (Did we just say 'Symbian'? We didn't mean to.) The other offering is Car Mode with MirrorLink, priced at £17.99 (roughly $28), which we took for a bump-free ride back at Nokia World, and which repeats the smartphone's screen on compatible systems such as Toyota's Touch Life. India's sub-$50 Android tablet claims 1.4 million orders in two weeks

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 04:31 AM PST

How popular is the world cheapest tablet? Pretty darn popular, it seems. The Aakash has already notched up 1.4 million bookings since going up for sale on December 14th, not massively surprising given the $41 (2,500 rupee) price tag. An upgraded version is already planned for March, with three new factories planned to each produce 75,000 new units per month. If a sub-$50 tablet is still too expensive for your tastes, then you may be happy to hear that the price should still sink as low as $35 and could even be pushed as low as $10. At that price, we'll take five.

Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook listed at US retailer for $900, 'coming soon'

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 04:01 AM PST

Looks like that 13.3-inch Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook we saw honeymooning with a 'friend' in Korea is almost ready to head over to the States. JR.com has listed it as "coming soon" for $899.99 along with a spec sheet that details the same 500GB/16GB hybrid drive we saw previously, along with a Core i5-2467M serving up CPU horsepower and graphics, 4GB of DDR3, 1366 x 768 LED backlit display, a single USB 3.0 port and WiDi. The weight and dimensions seem slightly chunkier than last reported though, with thickness reaching a maximum of 0.69-inches and a weight of 3.24 pounds -- still, it's a lot more shapely than the 1TB 14-incher it left behind.

IED attack simulator prepares US soldiers prior to Afghan deployment

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 03:32 AM PST

A new simulation exercise is now in place for US troops at the Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center near Edinburgh, Indiana. Built primarily from off-the-shelf components, the system is designed to better prepare soldiers for the physical and psychological challenges of IED attacks, which are currently the number one threat to military personnel stationed in Afghanistan. Situated inside a mounted vehicle and positioned in front of a large screen, service members are exposed to jarring explosions, smoke, noise and poor visibility -- all common occurrences of IED assaults. The system records the entire nightmarish scenario, which allows participants to review their performance and learn from their mistakes.

For soldiers who've never been to Afghanistan, the simulator will also be used to familiarize troops with the war zone terrain and other situations they may encounter along the way. Just how realistic is the IED simulation? According to Spc. Darren J. Ganier-Slotterbeck, "I deployed in 2005, 2007 and 2008 with the Marines. I've been blown up multiple times, and it definitely brought back memories. I was a little shaky when I got out of that thing. I'm not going to lie." He went on to say, "If we'd had the ability to go through training like this at the time, those deployments would have been a lot different." Sounds scary. We're not going to lie.

Microsoft: UK Retailer 'sold 94,000 counterfeit copies of Windows' (Update: Comet responds)

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 02:17 AM PST

Microsoft has launched an attack on beleaguered electronics retailer Comet -- stating that the British chain pirated 94,000 copies of Vista and XP recovery discs. Comet, which was recently sold off for £2 ($3), allegedly produced the copies at a factory in Hampshire and bundled them with PCs sold at its stores. There's been no official response from Comet yet, but we can't imagine Microsoft would throw this sort of statement around lightly. If you're concerned you are running a counterfeit copy of Windows, check out the How To Tell site below and we'll keep our eyes on this one as the saga unfolds.

Update: Comet has issued the following response to Microsoft's statement which we've got for you in full, after the break.
"We note that proceedings have been issued by Microsoft Corporation against Comet relating to the creation of recovery discs by Comet on behalf of its customers.

Comet has sought and received legal advice from leading counsel to support its view that the production of recovery discs did not infringe Microsoft's intellectual property.

Comet firmly believes that it acted in the very best interests of its customers. It believes its customers had been adversely affected by the decision to stop supplying recovery discs with each new Microsoft Operating System based computer.

Accordingly Comet is satisfied that it has a good defence to the claim and will defend its position vigorously."

READING, England, and REDMOND, Wash. - Jan. 4, 2012 - Microsoft Corp. today issued proceedings against Comet Group PLC for allegedly creating and selling more than 94,000 sets of counterfeit Windows Vista and Windows XP recovery CDs. The alleged counterfeits were sold to customers who had purchased Windows-loaded PCs and laptops.

"As detailed in the complaint filed today, Comet produced and sold thousands of counterfeit Windows CDs to unsuspecting customers in the United Kingdom," said David Finn, associate general counsel, Worldwide Anti-Piracy and Anti-Counterfeiting at Microsoft. "Comet's actions were unfair to customers. We expect better from retailers of Microsoft products - and our customers deserve better, too."

The suit charges Comet with producing the counterfeits in a factory in Hampshire and then selling the media to customers from its retail outlets across the U.K.

Comet is currently owned by French retail company Kesa Electricals PLC, although it is reportedly being purchased by private equity firm OpCapita LLP later this year.

With an emphasis on education, engineering and enforcement, Microsoft seeks to protect its customers from counterfeiting and piracy - and ensure people get what they pay for. If customers ever question the legitimacy of their software, be it a shrink-wrapped product or recovery media, they are advised to visit http://www.howtotell.com to learn more and, if they have any doubt, report the suspicious software to Microsoft.

Sinde Law brings SOPA-like restrictions to Spain

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 01:03 AM PST

The Spanish government has passed legislation aimed at cracking down on websites illegally sharing digital content. Called the Sinde Law, it will create a new government commission that Spanish right holders can engage when they feel that a site is illegally distributing their content. After an alleged infraction, the commission examines the complaint and determines if, under the new statute, legal action is necessary. Should a site be found in violation, the case is passed to a judge and the decision is made either to shutter the offending website, take action against the site's service provider or dismiss the complaint altogether. The BBC reports that the entire process, from first report to final decision, should take no more than ten days. Open internet activists have voiced concerns about the breadth and implications of the law. United States residents will recognize many of the arguments for and against the Sinde Law in light of the SOPA Act (Stop Online Piracy Act) debate that's been raging here in the United States for several months.

Samsung Galaxy M offers up Super AMOLED for less

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 11:31 PM PST

Samsung's 2011 flagship still tantalizingly out of your wallet's reach? Well, you might be tempted by the latest addition to the Galaxy family that's just gone official in Korea. While the shell appears nigh-on indistinguishable from the previously announced Galaxy R, there are some notable spec differences. The M totes a four-inch Super AMOLED screen, not the Super Clear LCD found on the R, while there's also only a single-core 1GHz processor here, not the dual-core Tegra 2 found on its older brother. The camera has also felt the pinch, shrinking from a five megapixel to a three megapixel offering. The Gingerbread handset measures in at just under 10mm thick, while still packing a TV tuner and a metallic body more similar to the Wave series than the plastic-backed Galaxy family. The M moniker places it in the high-end affordable spectrum, according to Sammy's latest naming strategy, priced at around $500, although there's no news on a release outside of its homeland just yet. The phone will arrive in three confusing color options; Platinum Silver [above], Blue Black and Lavender Pink. See whether the specification trade-off is worth it for a dose of Super AMOLED goodness by inspecting the source below.

Soundfreaq gets edgy with Sound Kick mobile Bluetooth speaker

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 11:01 PM PST

In the midst of Yet Another iPod Sound System-palooza, Soundfreaq has managed to craft some pretty differentiated pieces. Here in the run-up to CES 2012, the outfit's ushering in its most edgy device yet, the Sound Kick. It's a mobile wireless speaker that touts a unique speaker chamber, which shuts compactly for travel and then opens up whenever there's room. It's able to push on through seven solid hours of on-the-go listening (thanks to that internal Li-ion battery), and it can even share the juice with any USB-chargeable device -- similar to Spar's own Zephyr. In related news, the company's also using the show to introduce its Sound Step Recharge in white and red. Expect the new lot to ship this spring, and if you're hungry for more, the full release is just after the break.

Netflix queues S1 of its original production 'Lilyhammer' for streaming February 6th

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:24 PM PST

While Netflix has already announced original productions like House of Cards and a new season of Arrested Development it has commissioned for its streaming video service, the first to debut will be Lilyhammer next month. Starring Steve Van Zandt of the E Street Band and The Sopranos, it follows a mobster in witness protection who moves to Lillehammer, Norway, chasing dreams of clean air and gorgeous women. Naturally, it doesn't quite work out like that, but in an interesting twist Netflix will let you find out how it does work out all in one shot. Unlike most linear channels, and even Hulu's original programming efforts like The Confession, Netflix will post the entire season all at once (and in all of its territories -- US, Canada and Latin America) just like it does with older material. Of course, Netflix has a lot of ground to make up after its missteps last year, so perhaps extending its usual policy customers watch video when, where and how they want to content release timing is just the kind of bonus needed. Until it's available however, we'll have to live with the press release and trailer, both of which are included after the break.

"Lilyhammer," follows New York mobster Frank "The Fixer" Tagliano as he enters the federal witness protection program after ratting on his boss. A sports fan, Frank wants to make his new life in Lillehammer, the Norwegian town that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics – or as he calls it "Lilyhammer." Frank has visions of a paradise of "clean air, fresh white snow and gorgeous broads" far away from the temptations of the Big Apple and from mob hit men. Reality, of course, turns out to be spectacularly different.

All eight first season episodes of "Lilyhammer" will be available on February 6 so Netflix members can enjoy the series by streaming over the Internet to connected TVs, tablets, game consoles, computers and mobile phones.

To view the trailer, visit http://youtu.be/bfRgVbp9gSY.

"Lilyhammer" is a well-observed, funny and occasionally brutal story of culture clash, focused on Stevie's inimitable portrayal of an East Coast mobster," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. "We're proud to introduce this terrific Original Series exclusively to our members. If you love the first episode, there is no need to wait until next week, or to set a DVR, to catch the next one."

"I am very careful with my choices and this project was so exciting to me because of the wonderful writing, the rich characters and the fascinating culture of Norway," said Steven Van Zandt, Executive Producer. "Netflix is the perfect home for such a unique show."

"Lilyhammer" was developed by Rubicon TV AS (creator, Anne Bjornstad & Eilif Skodvin). The Writers on the Show include Anne Bjornstad, Eilif Skodvin and Steven Van Zandt. Producers include Trond Berg Nilsen and Agnete Thuland. Executive Producers include Lasse Hallberg & Steven Van Zandt. The series is a production by Rubicon TV AS.

HP redesigns its Magic Canvas software, plans to install it on all desktops (even non-touch ones)

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 08:01 PM PST

Though HP announced two desktops today, the most interesting tidbit might not be the computers, but the software installed on them. As the company releases new hardware, it's also rolling out a revamped version of its Magic Canvas UI (formerly known as TouchSmart). Now, it'll work even on PCs without touchscreens, and it's going to ship on every HP tower and all-in-one, including already-announced models like this. The most significant improvement is that you can now access the Start Menu and all your Windows apps, even when you're immersed in this UI that frankly looks more like a mobile OS than Windows 7. (If all this reeks of bloatware, you can uninstall or choose not to launch it.) As for that mobile-inspired experience, we're talking about those widgets and large, finger-friendly shortcuts, sure, but also the fact that you get an unlimited number of home screens for pinning notes and leaving documents open. Forget where you left your 15-page term paper? You can right click to bring up a search screen (we're not clear if there will be a keyboard shortcut for that). As we said, you can expect this to become ubiquitous on HP's desktops but if you want to see it in action now, you can head past the break for a short promo video.

HP outs Compaq L2311c docking monitor, LV1911 and LV2011 budget displays

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 08:01 PM PST

The last time HP unveiled a monitor it was chasing gamers looking for a little 3D on a budget, but this time around, it's got business users on the brain. Specifically, the kind of workers who spend a lot of time away from the office, or perhaps share a workspace with others. That's the idea behind the 23-inch Compaq L2311c Notebook Docking Monitor, which connects to laptops via USB. That same cable will also transmit video, though even HP will admit you'll get far better results if you use USB 3.0 instead of 2.0. Taking a tour of the monitor itself, you'll find a four-port USB hub and VGA socket, along with a 720p webcam, which should pair nicely with HP's bundled MyRoom software. The 1080p display is also adjustable, with 130mm of space to slide it up and down.

At the lower end of the spectrum, HP also announced the LV1911 and LV2011, a pair of 18.5- and 20-inch monitors, both of which forgo niceties like a webcam or USB hub. Either way, the resolution is low, given the spacious screen sizes: 1366 x 768 for the 18.5-incher, and 1600 x 900 for the 20-inch number. The smaller LV1911 will arrive stateside in March for $125, while the LV2011 will go on sale next month for $135. As for the L2311c docking monitor, it'll cost $319, and be available in the US, Japan and other Asian markets later this month.

HP intros Omni 27 all-in-one, Pavilion HPE Phoenix h9 tower

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 08:01 PM PST

If you thought HP would take a break after announcing seven all-in-ones last fall, you'd be sadly mistaken: the company just trotted out the Omni 27, its first model with a 27-inch display. In addition to that 1080p (non-touch) screen, it rocks the same Easel design as all those models HP introduced a few months back, which is to say it tilts a relatively modest 25 degrees. Other specs include dual- and quad-core Intel processors, up to 2TB of storage and Beats Audio (duh), and an optional TV tuner, Blu-ray player and HDMI port (yes, HDMI is an add-on). Moving on to a different category entirely, HP also unveiled the Pavilion HPE Phoenix h9 for the US market -- not its inaugural enthusiast tower, to be sure, but definitely the first to bear the consumer-y Pavilion name. Though the red accents and "armor-plated" design would suggest otherwise, HP's quick to market this not as a gaming rig, but a prosumer machine. Whatever you want to call it, you'll find specs worthy of power uses: a choice of Intel's latest X79 processors or AMD's eight-core chips, NVIDIA GTX 580 / AMD Radeon 7670 graphics and four DIMM slots capable of accommodating 16GB of RAM and up to three hard drives.

Whichever tickles your fancy, both come loaded with HP's Magic Canvas software -- aka, the UI that used to be called TouchSmart but has since been re-tooled to work even on non-touch machines. They'll each be available January 8th, with the Omni 27 starting at $1,200 and the Phoenix h9 fetching $1,150 and up. Until then, we've got a mix of hands-on and press shots below, with a pair of promo videos waiting for just past the break.

to your exercise goals. Based on periodic assessments of your fitness improvements, the revolutionary iBike POWERHOUSE works with your iPhone and iPod touch to measure, guide and motivate you to achieve important health, appearance, and fitness goals. The POWERHOUSE method maximizes the benefit of each ride and shortens the time needed to achieve results.

To be introduced on January 10th at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012) in Las Vegas, NV, Booth #3430, iBike POWERHOUSE combines iBike's patented power measurement and analysis technologies with automatically-adjusting, goal-oriented cycling plans -- all delivered through the incredible display and computing power of the iPhone/iPod touch.

Choose Your Goal-Based Plan – iBike POWERHOUSE Guides You Step-by-Step

Working out with iBike POWERHOUSE is easy. Select a goal-based plan, from "iSlim," "Express Fitness," "Brazilian Butt," "Kid Fit," "Weekend Warrior," "Zero to 50 miles in 3 weeks," and "Healthy Heart" -- just some of the plans available through in-app purchases. Then, over a period of 4-6 weeks, iBike POWERHOUSE guides you through a series of 45-90 minute bike rides. During each ride, you are directed to pedal at specific levels of effort (power), customized to the plan's goals and your measured fitness level. So, a "couch potato" will start out at a challenging but lower level of effort, whereas a fitter cyclist will start the same plan at a significantly higher level of effort.

First Ford Focus Electric rolls off the production line into Google's open arms

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 06:02 PM PST

The future of transportation is here, folks. We've spent some time with the Ford Focus Electric and have seen all the bits that make it go, but we didn't know who'd be the first to receive one. Turns out Google got an early Christmas present, and received its Focus Electric, the first production unit, just before the holidays. That means that the gang at Big G is already enjoying the 84mph top speed and fast charging secret sauce that lets the Ford fully charge on a 240-volt outlet in just over three hours -- or roughly half the time it takes a Leaf to top off its batteries. Wonder whether the EV from Dearborn is destined to join Google's Street View fleet, its cadre of self-driving cars, or replace some of those multi-colored company bikes strewn about Mountain View?

Ford Introduces Gas-Free Focus Electric with 100+ MPGe Expected; Nearly a Third of Lineup Now Offers 40-mpg Model

• Ford introduces gasoline-free 2012 Focus Electric, expected to be the first five-passenger electric vehicle with a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe)

• Nearly one-third of Ford's vehicle lines will feature a model with 40 mpg or more in 2012

• Focus Electric is the first all-electric vehicle to offer faster charging technology, allowing it to charge in half the time of a Nissan Leaf using 240-volt outlets

• C-MAX Hybrid is projected to achieve better fuel economy than Toyota Prius v and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid projected to achieve better miles per gallon equivalent in electric mode than Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid. With the C-MAX lineup, Ford becomes the largest hybrid transmission producer in North America

DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford's world-class Michigan Assembly Plant is starting production of the 2012 Focus Electric, expected to be the first five-passenger, all-electric car to achieve more than a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) fuel efficiency rating.

Focus Electric also is the first of its kind to feature faster charging, which will halve Nissan Leaf's time to fully recharge the battery and help drivers to more than double the expected single-charge range in a busy day of driving and recharging.

The car headlines Ford's transformed lineup, one-third of which will feature a model with 40 mpg or more in 2012, building on the company's commitment to give fuel-efficiency-minded customers the Power of Choice.

"The Focus Electric is a shining example of the leading fuel economy Ford is offering for each new vehicle," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "Whether people want a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full battery-electric vehicle, we have a family of vehicles for them to consider, providing a range of options to best meet their needs and support their driving habits and lifestyles."

Even with relatively stable gas prices, fuel economy is the top purchase consideration for new vehicles. Nearly 45 percent of customers say fuel economy is their top consideration based on a Ford survey of Americans in 36 cities this fall. Styling is the next consideration, with only 16 percent of study participants saying it is their top purchase driver.

Ford's rollout of electrified vehicles began in December 2010 with the 2011 Ford Transit Connect Electric – a small commercial van built in collaboration with Azure Dynamics. Ford's other 40-mpg vehicles include:

• Focus SE
• Fiesta
• Focus Electric
• C-MAX Hybrid
• C-MAX Energi
• Three vehicles yet to be announced

With 20 years of Ford research and innovation behind the software and hardware technology, the company offers proven engineering and design with Focus Electric. Ford holds approximately 500 patents on the hybrid technology used in the new Focus Electric and its other electrified vehicles.

Faster charging

Focus Electric is designed to offer enough range to cover the majority of daily driving habits of Americans. Its expected 100 MPGe is better than Chevrolet Volt and all electric vehicles with seating for five.

It will be the first electrified vehicle to offer faster charging with 240-volt outlets, which can be installed in customer homes. The battery can be recharged in just more than three hours using a 240-volt charging station, about half the charging time of the 2012 Nissan Leaf.

Faster charging with 240 volts also can extend range as drivers can more quickly recharge between stops – up to 30 miles per charge hour – so they can more than double the vehicle's range with multiple charging stops during a busy day of driving.
A unique value charging feature, powered by Microsoft, will help owners in the U.S. charge their vehicles at the cheapest utility rates, lowering the cost of ownership.

Elec-tech

Focus Electric introduces new features and technologies – including a unique version of the MyFord Touch® driver connect system especially for electric vehicles and a smartphone app called MyFord® Mobile that helps plug-in owners control their vehicles remotely.

The sleek and stylish five-door hatchback is designed to deliver real driving enjoyment as well. The all-electric powertrain and single-speed transmission provide immediate responsiveness and smooth acceleration when the driver steps on the accelerator, up to a top speed of 84 mph.
The Focus Electric is a dynamic driver's car, sharing the steering, handling and braking feel with the agile, sporty, fuel-powered Focus models upon which it's based. At the same time, the absence of a gasoline or diesel engine and outstanding aerodynamics lead to a remarkably quiet, comfortable in-car experience.

A limited number of Focus Electrics will first be available in California and the New York/New Jersey areas. Availability of the Focus Electric will expand in 2012 to the remaining 15 launch markets as production ramps up.

The 19 launch markets also include Atlanta; Austin and Houston, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Denver; Detroit; Los Angeles; San Francisco; San Diego; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Portland, Ore.; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; Seattle; and Washington, D.C.

MAXimum efficiency

The Ford C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid are Ford's first compact multi-activity vehicles (MAVs) in North America and offer high mileage and low emissions as well as a distinctive design and flexible interior.

The C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi use the company's next-generation powersplit hybrid technology in combination with a lighter, smaller lithium-ion battery system. Both models provide maximum fuel efficiency by pairing the high-voltage lithium-ion battery and electric traction motor with a high-efficiency Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine. This technology enables the gasoline engine to run less than the previous generation.

C-MAX Hybrid is targeted to deliver better fuel economy than the Toyota Prius v. C-MAX Energi is expected to deliver better MPGe in electric mode than the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid and to achieve more than 500 miles of driving range using the battery and engine.

The C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi, like the Focus Electric, have been engineered and built to deliver engaging driving dynamics and technologies. In addition, C-MAX Energi and Focus Electric will offer MyFord Touch and MyFord Mobile, designed to make charging and driving the vehicle even more efficient, affordable and easier to live with.

Hybrid transmission leader

When C-MAX Hybrid launches, Ford becomes North America's largest maker of hybrid transmissions.

Ford engineered the transmission and upgraded the controls with a goal of creating the industry's highest-performing and smoothest-operating hybrid transmission. Among the hybrid transmission's innovations:

• Electric motors capable of operating at higher electric speeds
• A new, super-efficient cooling system that enables higher speeds in electric drive
• Optimized gear ratios enabling improvement in fuel economy
• More precise controls to deliver higher levels of refinement as the powertrain transitions between engine and electric drive
• Reduced weight to help increase fuel economy

This is the first hybrid transmission to be designed and built by Ford. Production is moving from a supplier in Japan to the Van Dyke Transmission Plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., which also will assemble battery packs for Ford's hybrid and electric vehicles.

Building green vehicles cleaner
Ford completely transformed Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich., into an environmentally friendly workplace with flexible manufacturing capability.

With the new electrified vehicles and the new Focus ST performance model also coming in 2012, Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant is the first facility in the world capable of building a full array of vehicles – gas-powered, EcoBoost®, electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid – all on the same production line.

The plant also features one of the largest solar power generation systems in the state as well as several electric vehicle charging stations, allowing the facility to operate on a blend of renewable and conventional electricity.

Renewable energy collected by the solar panels directly feeds the energy-efficient microgrid, helping power the plant. When the plant is inactive, such as holidays, the stored solar energy will provide power during periods of insufficient or inconsistent sunlight. Projected energy cost savings are approximately $160,000 per year.

The plant also has 10 electric vehicle charging stations that recharge the electric switcher trucks that transport parts between adjacent facilities – saving an estimated 86,000 gallons of gas a year.

Plus, 50 percent of the parts arriving for the all-new Focus are packed in cardboard, are carefully collected, sorted and recycled, as is the bubble wrap, the Styrofoam and the water bottles used by employees.

Google: Android 4.0 'Holo' theme to be mandatory on all devices with Android Market

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 05:06 PM PST

Google is rightfully proud of its native theme in Ice Cream Sandwich. Dubbed Holo, it's intuitive, functional and -- dare we say it -- downright sexy. Now, in an effort to provide all users with a consistent interface, the company is making the theme essential for all Android 4.0 devices that come bundled with the Android Market. That's right, the stock, undiluted experience. Don't be alarmed, though, because manufacturer customizations aren't going anywhere, and the changes aren't terribly drastic. In fact, for users of Sense, TouchWiz and the like, Google is issuing architectural mandates that will make it dead simple for independent developers to create apps that fit nicely into these customized environments, complete with the proper widgets and colors. In other words, app designers may effortlessly choose between Holo or the manufacturer's default theme when considering the software's interface -- although, we'd really love to see this decision extended to end-users. Meanwhile, it seems terribly unlikely that Google's new mandate will bring choice to the home screen, keyboard and dialer as well. We can only hope, right?

Bracketron GreenZero chargers keep vampires from sucking your power

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 04:08 PM PST

Only you can prevent vampire power: when gadgets are left plugged into a wall outlet, most chargers still unnecessarily suck up a fair amount of juice, a wasteful and inefficient process. To save on your electric bill and leave some extra energy for everybody else, Bracketron's introduced a new lineup of eco-friendly chargers that keep those nasty vampires away by detecting when a device is at full charge and shutting off the incoming power. The Mushroom GreenZero charger won't start doing its thing until you push the large green button (seen above) with your hand or foot; the Stone GreenZero ultimately does the same thing but in a more travel-friendly package. Lastly, the Stone Battery is an external 1,000mAh power source that also shuts off once the device is fully charged. All of the options are compatible with iPhones and devices with micro-USB ports. This isn't anything we haven't seen before, but we always welcome healthy competition in this field. All of the products will be ready for distribution to retailers by March 2012. Instead of siding with Team Edward or Jacob, how about coming together and joining Team Green? Check out the presser for the details.

Innovative chargers and batteries with GreenZero Technology – the most eco-friendly and efficient way to charge Android, iPhone and other mobile devices – to be showcased at CES 2012 in Las Vegas

Minneapolis, MN – January 3, 2012– Bracketron, a leader in consumer electronics accessories, announces its new lineup of stylish and eco-friendly mobile device chargers and batteries that feature GreenZero Technology. This exclusive technology is the most eco-friendly and efficient way to charge mobile devices and totally eliminates wasteful stand-by consumption, also known as vampire power, which other chargers consume when they are left plugged into power outlets.

Bracketron's GreenZero chargers detect when your device is fully charged or unplugged, and then automatically shut off. The chargers then consume zero idle power to save energy, while also lengthening the life of your device battery by limiting top-off charging time. Bracketron's mobile device chargers make it easy to get rid of standby consumption, so that you no longer need to worry about unplugging your chargers or switching off a power strip to save energy. The travel-friendly chargers also save energy while charging your devices through their incredibly efficient GreenZero technology.

Bracketron's GreenZero product lineup includes the Mushroom GreenZero and Stone GreenZero wall chargers for mobile devices, and the Stone Battery, a mini portable power supply that is available for both iPhone and microUSB-connected mobile devices. The GreenZero chargers and battery will be unveiled at the International CES 2012, North Hall Booth 6228, Jan. 10-13, in Las Vegas. Bracketron's GreenZero line will be available at retailers nationwide in March 2012.

GreenZero Chargers
The Mushroom GreenZero is the most ergonomic charger of the lineup. The Mushroom immediately starts charging when connected to a device with low battery levels by simply pressing the "mushroom" button with your hand or foot. When the device is fully charged or unplugged, the charger will automatically shut off to save energy and your battery. The charger's green technology allows for zero standby energy consumption.

The lightweight Mushroom GreenZero has a very compact design and an integrated cable reel that makes it ideal for travel and portable use. The glossy white and green wall charger is available in three models – one for USB-connected portable devices such as tablets, cameras, and cellphones; another with an embedded microUSB cable for Android and other smartphones; and a third model that includes an Apple 30 pin cable for iDevices. With pricing from $24.95 to $29.28, all models of the Mushroom GreenZero are available at Bracketron.com.

The Stone GreenZero is a wall charger that is compatible with USB mobile electronic devices. The small, travel-friendly charger features a foldable, snag-free design so that it can be easily carried in a purse or bag. The Stone GreenZero starts charging with the press of its green button and automatically shuts off with zero idle power once your device is fully charged or unplugged. The efficient Stone GreenZero is available for only $22.56 at Bracketron.com.

Mini Batteries
Bracketron's Stone Battery is a stylish mini portable power supply that allows you to power up your mobile device on-the-go. The pocket-sized Stone Battery can be used with mobile devices that are paired with or without a protective case. The 1000mAmp battery includes an LED indicator that lets you know when the stone is fully charged, and will recharge mobile devices for up to three hours. Once your device is fully charged, the Stone Battery automatically shuts off. Two models of the Stone Battery are available – one with an embedded cable for microUSB devices and another with an Apple 30 pin cable for iPhone, iPod and iPod Touch.

Samsung unveils new HTIB systems plus audio docks with Galaxy S and iPhone support

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 03:13 PM PST

While it's hardly pulling the curtain back on its entire CES 2012 slate of products, Samsung's earliest preview for your AV pleasure is an updated range of HTIB systems and sound bars, as well as two new Audio Docks that support Apple devices as well as its own Galaxy S phones and players. The DA-E750 Audio Dock (pictured above) is the first to include Samsung's "hybrid vacuum tube amplifier technology" which it claims raises the bar for mainstream audio products, by delivering the clear sound output of digital combined with the natural sound of a vacuum tube in its preamp. Both docks will play from and charge both Samsung and Apple hardware, as well as stream music wirelessly via AllShare or AirPlay, although the DA-E670 lacks that high end vacuum tube tech.

For your entire home theater needs, the new HT-E6730W 7.1 Blu-ray 3D HTIB features the same vacuum tube tech as the DA-E750, while the HT-E5500W boasts an iPod dock and 3D sound effects. Finally the HW-E550 Surround Sound Bar also produces 3D sound with vertically mounted speakers and comes with its own wirelessly connected subwoofer. One other new feature this year is the "Disc to Digital" integration in the HT-E5500W's Blu-ray player which will give users access to streaming copies of eligible discs just by registering into the player. It sounds like it's powered by Ultraviolet, although we'd expect to hear more about that closer to the show. Check after the break for press releases, and the gallery for a few pics of all this hardware -- if you know anything about Samsung, you know the onslaught has only just begun.

SAMSUNG PREVIEWS NEW LINE OF AUDIO DOCKS

Showcases the first multi-device audio dock with vacuum tube technology and the
industry's first audio dock with extended multi-device compatibility

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., January 3, 2012 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today debuted a new line of audio dock systems that feature breakthrough innovation for rich sound qualities comparable to premium audio systems. These audio dock systems are also stylishly designed to complement any room in the home:

· Samsung's Audio Dock with Vacuum Tube Amplifier – the world's first docking system that incorporates Samsung's proprietary hybrid vacuum tube amplifier technology and supports a broad range of Galaxy S and Apple devices via both docked and wireless connectivity (model DA-E750).

· Samsung's Audio Dock for Galaxy S and Apple devices – a sophisticated system that combines functionality with harmonized design for a crystal clear audio experience along with connectivity to both Samsung and Apple devices (model DA-E670).

These new audio docks will be on display at Samsung's booth #12004 in the Central Hall at the 2012 CES, which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), January 10-13, 2012.

"Listening to music, whether individually or in a group setting, is one of the most personal and valued forms of entertainment," said Sangchul Lee, senior vice president, Samsung Electronics. "As the leader in home entertainment, we wanted to create products that are unique, highly-functional and beautifully designed, yet offer the crystal clear, rich sound that consumers can enjoy, regardless of the portable device they store their music on."

Exclusive Technology with Enhanced Connectivity and Style

The Samsung DA-E750 Audio Dock is the company's first speaker dock and features Samsung's exclusive hybrid vacuum tube amplifier technology – a digital amplifier's sharp clarity combined with rich and warm sound performance of vacuum tubes – to produce a pure listening experience to please any audiophile.

Previously only available in premium audio products, vacuum tubes amplifiers have been praised by audiophiles for producing more natural sounds, but these sounds were occasionally subject to distortion. Digital amplifiers deliver clear sound output, are more energy efficient and can fit into a smaller form factor. By combining the best of both, Samsung has achieved a technology breakthrough, thereby raising the bar in sound quality for mainstream audio products. The vacuum tube is used as in the pre-amplifier while the power amplifier uses digital technology so the audio dock is able to maintain its beautifully slim body.

The DA-E750 is the industry's first device with docking support for both Galaxy S smartphones as well as Apple iOS devices including iPods, iPhones, and even iPads via unique dual docking structure. The audio dock, which boasts a 2.1-channel speaker and powerful built-in subwoofer with 100 watts of sound, also offers analog (composite) input and a USB port to play audio files directly from a thumb drive, music player or portable hard drive. MP3, WMA and WAV file formats are supported.

In addition, the DA-E750 supports wireless audio file playback through AllShare® for Samsung Galaxy devices and Airplay for Apple devices, or via Bluetooth enabled devices for the ultimate in flexibility and convenience.

The elegant design of the DA-E750 exudes the highest level of sophistication – when in operation the vacuum tube inside the dock emits a warm, soft glow that accentuates the sleek, high gloss wood finish wood and adds a touch of luxury to the system.

Supreme Convenience and Sophisticated Simplicity

The Samsung DA-E670 Audio Dock for Galaxy S Smartphones, as well as Apple iOS devices. It is an easy-to-use audio dock that offers a superb listening experience while simultaneously charging the batteries of each device. With its compact footprint, the DA-E670 would be right at home in a living room, in a home office, or even in a bedroom, wherever music can be enjoyed while the devices charge.

The audio dock also delivers a powerful sound with built-in speakers that collectively output 40 watts of power and an integrated subwoofer that allows users to experience an enhanced bass response than what is available on conventional docking stations.

The assortment of features that accompany the DA-E670 include an auxiliary input and support for Bluetooth-enabled devices, audio support for MP3, WMA, WAV files from portable storage devices connected via USB. The DA-E670 also offers users a simple remote control. Like the DA-E750, the innovative DA-E670 supports both AllShare for Samsung devices and Airplay for Apple devices.

PRESS RELEASE

SAMSUNG RAISES THE BAR WITH NEW HOME ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCTS

Breakthrough vacuum tube technology delivers rich, natural sounds for superior audio quality; Sophisticated style elements enhance every home entertainment room

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., January 3, 2012 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today introduced a new range of home theater systems with purer sounds and superior video experiences to delight any home entertainment enthusiast and audiophile. Highlighted products include:

· Samsung's 7.1 Channel Blu-ray 3D Home Theater System – the first home theater system that features Samsung's proprietary vacuum tube amplifier technology that combines both vacuum tubes and a digital amplifier into one unit to create a powerful entertainment experience (model HT-E6730W).

· Samsung's Wireless 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System – a home theater hub that delivers superior surround sound and explosive video quality in full HD 1080p for a complete entertainment experience (model HT-E5500W).

· Samsung's Surround Sound Bar with 3D Depth Sound – a transformable sound bar speaker system that creates virtual surround sound with leading-edge audio technologies (model HW-E550).

The new line of home theater systems will be on display at Samsung's booth #12004 in the Central Hall at the 2012 International CES, which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), from January 10-13, 2012. The Samsung HT-E6730W also received a CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award.

"Consumers want to recreate the quality, immersive movie theater experience at home so that they may enjoy this at any time with family and friends," said Sangchul Lee, senior vice president, Samsung Electronics. "Samsung is already acknowledged as a leading manufacturer of home theater systems that offer pristine audio and fully immersive HD video. We've raised the bar even higher this year with improved immersive audio sounds and unmatched picture quality so that they now have even more choices to get the best entertainment experience across multiple devices."

Breakthrough Technologies for Superior Sound and Movie Theater Quality Entertainment in the Home

There have been many discussions among audio enthusiasts over the benefits of digital and vacuum tube amplifiers. Many appreciated the pure sound that digital amplifiers deliver even in a small form factor, but felt that vacuum tube amplifiers create a richer and fuller sound.

In 2012, Samsung's breakthrough hybrid vacuum tube amplifier technology offers the best of both worlds – the crystal clear sound quality from a digital amplifier with the warmer tone qualities of vacuum tubes. In addition, the vacuum tube offers an extra octave of sound without distortion.

Samsung's Crystal Amp Plus technology, available in the HT-E6730W and the HT-E5500W, offers pure digital audio playback and quality while also protecting the speakers and listeners from potentially harmful jumps in volume.

Samsung's flagship home theater systems also offer superior video experience. Both the HT-E6730W and HT-E5500W Home Theater Systems offer built-in WiFi for easy access to a new world of web-connected entertainment via a full web browser, as well as hundreds of premium apps from leading brands such as AOL, CNBC, ESPN, MTV, NBA and The Broadway Channel through Samsung Apps. Users can also choose and manage their social networks via popular services such as Facebook or Twitter.

Users are able to up-convert content from DVDs, streaming videos or connected media devices, such as portable players and cameras to full HD 1080p. Each home theater system employs a Samsung-developed system-on-a-chip (SoC), which has cutting-edge image quality enhancement algorithms, Samsung's video processor and scaler, and various high definition codecs.

Sleek Style and Sophistication for Visual Pleasure

For immersive depth and surround sound experience that would impress any audiophile, Samsung's HT-E6730W is a 1,330 watt 7.1-channel system that delivers outstanding high-definition audio and Samsung's unique 3D surround sound effect. The HT-E6730W's compact and streamlined tower speakers incorporate the front height speakers for a cleaner look. Users will enjoy a truly immersive vertical surround sound experience, thanks to innovative Swivel Speakers on the towers that can turn upwards so the sound will vertically cascade down on the listener. The rear satellite speakers are wireless to offer more flexibility in placement and eliminate the need to hide another set of wires.

Aesthetically, the HT-E6730W sleek appearance is enhanced by Samsung's vacuum tubes, which can be seen on the front and top of the system, and which illuminates when in use to create a touch of elegance. The glass fiber cones in the speakers improve sound quality and minimize distortion, for the ideal combination of style and performance. The combination of this innovative hybrid vacuum tube amplifier and the specially designed towers with front height speakers and wireless rear speakers create the best all-in-one solution for any home entertainment room.

Designed to complement the full line of Samsung's stylish HDTVs, the HT-E6730W has a midnight black, high gloss finish for an elegance that blends with other components in the room. The system consists of six speakers: a wide center channel speaker for clear dialogue, a large but unobtrusive subwoofer, two tower speakers which include embedded height channel speakers, and two surround speakers.

Unmatched Surround Sound and Video Quality

Users will be delighted with the enhanced entertainment experience and superb 2D and 3D content viewing offered by Samsung's HT-E5500W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System, thanks to new technologies that optimize audio and video, content options and performance upgrades.

This six-speaker 5.1 channel system offers a virtual 7.1 channel sound experience by using an advanced algorithm that analyzes the sound in the two rear speakers to create the effect of two additional channels of sound. The home theater system also features Samsung's new 3D Sound technology, which syncs the audio track of 3D content to match 3D motion on the screen and adds vertical 3D sound effects for a uniquely immersive visual and audio experience. The HT-E5500W's BD Wise Plus feature automatically adjusts the Samsung TV setting to provide optimal picture for each scenario.

With two HDMI 1.4a inputs, the HT-E5500W allows users to simply connect to a set-top box and a game console for easy access to content from all three devices. Additionally, the HT-E5500W boasts an Apple-certified iPod®/iPhone® dock so users can access their iTunes collections without a connector cable, thereby creating one of the most flexible home entertainment systems.

Users will also be able to access the innovative Disc to Digital feature in the Blu-ray player which enables users to turn eligible copies of their personal DVD collection into digital content. Once users register their ownership of movies, they will be able to access and view this content on multiple devices in the home and on the go, or upgrade their collection by purchasing HD quality versions of these movies.

Powerful 3D Depth and Surround Sound Capabilities

Users will have greater flexibility in the placement of their HW-E550 Surround Sound Bar with 3D Depth Sound – they can either place the sound bar horizontally below their TV or split the sound bar into two vertical speakers. By attaching each speaker to an included base, the soundbar can also morph into a traditional looking 2.1-channel system with half-tall speakers.

Those looking for a rich audio experience will be pleased with the outstanding sound quality and performance of the HW-E550.

In addition, the HW-E550 offers Smart Volume, an active audio monitoring system that prevents spikes in volume when TV channels or radio stations are changed. This not only protects the listeners' ears but also the soundbar's speakers, thereby ensuring extended usage of the device. The HW-E550 comes with six different settings – Movie, Game, Drama, Music, News and Sports – to deliver optimal sound quality according to the content of the video. Samsung's 3D Depth sound technology also synchronizes the audio to 3D images for some sense of depth and immersion so that users enjoy realistic, cinematic surround sound effects without the need for additional satellite speakers.

The HW-E550 is equipped with two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output so users can easily connect to Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and gaming consoles. Support for HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) puts audio data into the video connection and eliminates the need for separate audio cables. The HW-E550 is Bluetooth-enabled providing wireless playback of audio files from other Bluetooth devices. A USB port provides another connectivity option.

The sound bar is incredibly thin and sleek. Its main speaker weighs only 4 lbs and is easily wall-mountable, making it an ideal choice for fans of minimalist design or those who want to free up more space in their home entertainment room. With Samsung's proprietary dual band 5.2/5.8GHz wireless technology, wires are not required to link the speaker bar and the subwoofer. The subwoofer, which has a frequency response of 40Hz to 200Hz, can be placed anywhere in the room without any compromise.

Craftsman aims to pimp your lawnmower with digital dash, traction control and more

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 02:52 PM PST

At this week's North American International Auto Show, Craftsman unveiled its 2012 CTX tractor line to the car-loving masses, and let's just get this out there -- this is not your father's lawnmower. Propelled by a 30-horsepower Briggs & Stratton motor, this grass-assassin can hit forward speeds of 8MPH and, for those Jason Statham-style chase scenes, 3MPH in reverse. The tractor is equipped with automatic traction control, an electronic fuel management system that removes the need for a carburetor, electronic cutting height adjustment and a 54-inch mowing plain with "quick deck removal." Couple that with cruise control, digital instruments, a cup holder and 12-volt power adapter (have to have some suds and songs while you mow, right?) and you have yourself quite the package. The CTX will be available this February at Sears stores nationwide and will be priced between $3000 and $6500.

The Craftsman Brand to Show New CTX Tractor at North American International Auto Show in Detroit

DETROIT, Jan. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Ready...set...mow. On Monday, the Craftsman brand will showcase the new CTX tractor series in the concourse at the 2012 North American International Auto Show – the first tractor ever to be at the Detroit event. Powerful, durable and dependable, the CTX tractor is fully loaded with automotive-inspired features that help homeowners achieve an unbelievable cut for their lawn and conquer their landscaping needs.

With design elements like automatic traction control, electronic fuel management (EFM), electronic cutting height adjustment and quick deck removal, the Craftsman CTX tractor has the ability to take on challenges of any type of terrain. That's why it is "America's Hardest Working Tractor."

"We are launching this new line of Craftsman tractors because homeowners with larger lawns and more rugged terrains want a durable, high-performance tractor mower to help them maintain a beautiful lawn," said Kris Malkoski, vice president and general manager of the Craftsman brand. "Because Detroit has given us great performing cars with best-in-class features, we think it is logical to bring a tractor to the Auto Show that does the same."

Feature Details:

Automatic Traction Control: Off-roading is no problem. Whether mowing on an incline or hauling on a wet surface, the unique automatic traction control system sends power to both wheels independently, so if one slips, the other keeps the tractor under control.

EFM System: New cars don't have carburetors and neither does the CTX tractor. The EFM system ensures reliable automotive-style starting and peak engine performance year after year.

Electronic Cutting Height Adjustment: To get that perfect lawn, adjusting the cutting height for seasonal changes is a must. This automatic package comes standard on all new CTX models and allows you to adjust the cutting height with the push of a button.

Quick Deck Removal: With just a few simple steps, the deck easily comes off, making it simple to perform maintenance like deck cleaning or blade sharpening. Plus, additional attachments can transform the tractor into a hauler, aerator, dethatcher, cultivator, sweeper or snow plow – giving you a tractor that handles your outdoor maintenance requirements year round.

Under the hood, the CTX tractor packs a 30-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine that delivers 8.0 mile per hour top forward speed and 3.0 reverse speed. A heavy-duty welded frame and a cast iron axle give it the strength and ruggedness to be a total lawn and garden workhorse. A 54-inch deck lets you tackle large areas of grass and an 18-inch turning radius lets you maneuver through tight spots.

No vehicle would be complete without cruise control, full digital instrumentation with color-coded controls, power steering, soft-grip tilt steering wheel, consol with a cup holder and 12-volt adapter. The Craftsman CTX tractor, which stands for "Craftsman Tractor Experience," has it all.

The Craftsman CTX tractor series will be available in February 2012 at Sears stores nationwide. Two yard tractor and two garden tractor models will be available, ranging in price from $2,999.99 to $6,499.99. Attachments are sold separately.

The 2012 North American International Auto Show runs from Jan. 9-22, 2012 at the COBO Center in Detroit. Stop by to see the Craftsman display in the concourse outside of Oakland Hall. For more information on the tractor, award-winning Craftsman innovations and the 84-year history of the brand, log on to www.craftsman.com or www.facebook.com/craftsman.

TiVo, AT&T patent settlement will send at least $215 million TiVo's way through 2018

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 02:13 PM PST

After leveraging its DVR patent portfolio into a $500 million settlement with Dish Network and Echostar TiVo has made it rain again, cutting a mutual patent licensing deal with AT&T that settles their litigation and will result in at least $215 million heading its way through 2018. Additional license fees are possible based on AT&T's U-verse DVR subscriber base, so besides the $51 million up front and recurring payments after that, there could be even more money at stake. Despite intervention on its behalf by Microsoft, AT&T apparently decided caving was the best option. Next we'll see what happens next in a similar battle with Verizon and whether TiVo decides to continue developing its products or just sit back and let the licensing money roll in. CEO Tom Rogers said in a statement (included after the break) that it provides TiVo rights to "innovate TiVo products and services under license from AT&T", although if it were us we'd make the call after taking a Scrooge McDuck-style dive into a pool filled with Dish and AT&T's money.

TiVo Announces Settlement of Patent Litigation With AT&T; TiVo and AT&T Enter Into a Patent Licensing Arrangement

ALVISO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/03/2012 -- TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO) announced today that it has settled its pending patent litigation with AT&T and that the companies have entered into a mutual patent licensing arrangement. Under the terms of the settlement, AT&T agreed to pay TiVo an initial payment of $51 million, followed by recurring quarterly guaranteed payments through June 2018, totaling $164 million, which together yield minimum payments of $215 million. In addition to these minimum payments, AT&T will pay incremental recurring per subscriber monthly license fees through July 2018 should AT&T's DVR subscriber base exceed certain levels.

As part of the settlement, TiVo and AT&T agreed to dismiss all pending litigation between the companies with prejudice. The parties also entered into a cross license of their respective patent portfolios in the advanced television field.

"We are extremely pleased to reach an agreement with AT&T, which acknowledges the value of our intellectual property," said Tom Rogers, CEO and President of TiVo. "This settlement, on the heels of our recent operational success that has resulted in the growth of TiVo's overall subscriber base, is another major accomplishment for TiVo and we believe a great outcome for our shareholders. The combination of guaranteed payments and future additional fees paid to TiVo in the event that AT&T's pay TV business continues to grow in-line with consensus analyst expectations, represents hard-earned compensation for our IP enforcement efforts. The settlement also provides us rights to innovate TiVo products and services under license from AT&T and allows us to avoid significant legal expenses that we expect would have been incurred by us during and after trial."

AppGear
WowWee, the company best known for its endless supply of adorable robot toys, is kicking off 2012 with something a little more virtual than visceral. AppGear combines actual physical toys with iOS and Android apps, like the launch title Foam Fighters. Each collectible, action figure or playset is paired with its own free, downloadable app that offers an augmented reality game or virtual way to interact with the toys. The line will be launching in "early" 2012, for between $9.99 and $19.99 depending on the particular toy. Six products will be available at launch, including Alien Jailbreak, Zombie Burbs, and Elite Commander which you can check out in the videos below alongside some incredibly vague PR. New Toy Category Equals New Revenue for Retailers in 2012

AppGear™ to Premiere at CES 2012.

LAS VEGAS, 4 Jan. 2012, from ShowStoppers @CES 2012 -AppGear™ from WowWee is a line of collectible toys that interact with free downloaded apps; the latest trend in gaming and graphics. AppGear changes the way consumers interact with the world of gaming, connecting apps with traditional tangible toys providing the user with a unique interface combining the digital and real world; essentially creating a new reality..."Amplified Reality".

Launching in early 2012 with 6 unique titles, AppGear will be the low-cost innovative leader in the newly created category, known as AppCessories. A leading national newspaper recently said the AppCessory™ category will be the hottest toy category for 2012.

Last year App sales surpassed 5.2 billion dollars and this year that number is expected to increase to over 15 billion. By 2014 experts expect to see the number grow exponentially to 185 billion in sales.

"Until now, traditional retailers or brick-and-mortars have been unable to tap into this huge growing market. They've been left out of the app party, but now App Gear is providing retailers an opportunity to take a bite out of the "app" pie," said Mike Gonzales, Creative Director and Digital Brand Manager for WowWee. "AppGear products will be sold at retail with price points of $9.99 up to $19.99, making the AppGear experience affordable for the real consumer!"

Every AppGear product, such as a collectible figure, interactive playset or customizable toy, will connect or interact with the associated free downloaded app. Also unique to AppGear and crucial to the success of AppGear for 2012, every AppGear product is compatible with all IOS(iPhone, iPad, iTouch) and Android platforms.

"Apps used to be something you played on your mobile devices. Thanks to WowWee's AppGear you now play with real toys in the virtual world. Foam Fighters is one of a series of toy based apps. You fly your toy, play on your phone, using your real world as background. How cool is that? " said technology expert, Robin Raskin. Earlier this week "Foam Fighters" was chosen as one of the 10 finalists for this years Mobile Apps Showdown. As part of CES, The Mobile Apps Showdown honors the best of the best apps founded by Robin Raskin, Founder of Living in Digital Times.

New Fujifilm camera pictures leak, shooter scheduled for CES debut?

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 01:27 PM PST

Well, well, have a look at what the proverbial internet cat dragged in. The image above comes to you via Japanese forum, giving us a pretty good idea of what is allegedly Fujifilm's next interchangeable lens camera. Following in the footsteps of the retro-looking X10 and the X100, not much is known about the shooter's specs, but we'd venture that it probably isn't full-frame. Guess it won't take too long to find out, as the grapevine also muses its proper reveal will happen at CES. Too frothy to wait until then? Well, hop on past the break where we've conveniently culled an old mockup for ya.

You could take the time to make your cat feel loved. Or you could augment a robot to do it for you. Software engineer Taylor Veltrop has accomplished this by combining a 21-inch-tall Nao robot, a few Wiimotes, a Kinect sensor bar, a treadmill and a head-mounted display. The configuration, which represents about a year's work and several thousand dollars in parts, uses the Kinect and Wii remotes to control the robot's arms, the sensor bar and treadmill to provide movement and the head-mounted display to move the Nao's head and adjust its camera angle. This is still a work in progress, and doesn't include things like two-way audio, which Veltrop plans to implement using an integrated microphone and speakers. Insert Coin: Timelapse+ is the intervalometer you've been waiting for (video)

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 12:24 PM PST

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

That timelapse masterpiece you've been planning just got a whole lot less daunting thanks to Elijah Parker over at Kickstarter. Go through a few niceties, like handing over at least $99 and helping him reach his $20,000 funding target, and you'll take proud ownership of a Timelapse+ (previously called the Timelapse Pro) -- a photographer's intervalometer that does a lot to deserve its name. It'll come with a choice of adapters to match the standard cable release on your DSLR (or even SLR, if that's how you roll), and once hooked up it'll let you configure everything from delayed starts to incremental exposures and even multiple exposures per interval for a much-needed dose of HDR. The firmware will be open source to leave scope for user mods, and there'll also be the option of a Bluetooth interface for wireless controls -- although that'll require an extra $40 and a smidgen of FCC approval. The video after the break reveals more, and the source link has more+.

Previous project update: The last Insert Coin project we featured -- the Kapsule Lightstand Kindle accessory -- is currently languishing with just $1,556 raised out of a $40,000 target and only 17 days to. Hey, you win some, you lose some.

Google buoys its patent portfolio with 217 more filings acquired from IBM

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 11:57 AM PST

It's not quite as big as some previous patent transactions between the two companies, but it looks like Google did a fair bit more shopping from IBM's vast portfolio at the tail-end of 2011. As noted by the SEO by the Sea blog, IBM transferred 188 granted patents and 28 published patent applications to Google during the last week of the year, including a number of patents related to phones and web browsers. Unfortunately, other key details like an acquisition price remain a mystery, but you can peruse some of the patents themselves at the source link below.

Rossmorr i23 HD interactive display tablet offers up high new year's resolution

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 11:28 AM PST

Been eyeing the tablet sweetness that is the Wacom Cintiq 24HD, but not quite ready to make the financial investment that comes with it? Oregon-based Morgan Ross Egging has begun shipping the Rossmorr i23 HD. The 23-inch tablet offers up a 1920 x 1080 resolution (compare that the 24HD's 1920 x 1200) IPS display. In order to use the tablet, you'll need a separate Windows, OS X or Linux computer. The Rossmorr i23 HD will run you $1,999, which is about $500 cheaper than the Wacom -- a company with which, Morgan Ross Egging is careful to point out, it has no affiliation. Of course, the company has only been creating custom tablets since last year and certainly doesn't have the track record of a Wacom, either. Check out a video of the tablet in action after the break.

Update: Post was updated to correct the resolution of the tablets. Thanks artworkajb.

Mimbo the iPhone robot will smile for you, still doesn't get your 'Seinfeld' references

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 11:03 AM PST

This here is Mimbo. He's the kindly sort. Smile and Mimbo smiles back. Sure, others in his place might let their cardboard bodies, iPhone faces and all of the male bimbo jokes stand in the way of having a good time. Not Mimbo. The happy little 'bot uses facial recognition to generation a corresponding emotion on that cardboard-wrapped iPhone head of his. His face is composed of four LEDs for eyes, an empty label eyelid and a mouth made from a multifader, all created using TouchOSC. And using facial tracking via a program like FaceOSC, little Mimbo can mimic your expressions. Check out the 'bot in a video after the break and find out how to manufacture your own Mimbo at home in the source link below.
