Fujifilm X-Pro1 interchangeable lens camera preview (video) Posted: 11 Jan 2012 11:07 AM PST The interchangeable lens camera market grew by one this week, following Fujifilm's confirmation of its new X-Pro1. The 16 megapixel APS-C ILC may be in fact be a mirrorless model, but company reps prefer that you don't use "the M-word," insisting that the shooter stands alone in its own category as a "premium" interchangeable lens camera. And after spending an hour with the oversized, solidly-built ILC and viewing a variety of comparison samples, it's not difficult to confirm that the assessment may not be far off. The entire hands-on experience was in line with that premium claim -- from the white gloves we were required to use when handling the camera to the Japanese design lead taking care to make sure sample models were clean of markings and positioned just right, it's clear that Fujifilm is taking this launch very seriously, and you should, too. Join us past the break for an early CES look at what may very well be the sharpest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera to date. In many ways, the X-Pro1 is simply an updated X100 with the incredible benefit of an interchangeable lens mount. To the untrained eye, the bodies look nearly identical, with a similar construction and finish, familiar dial location and control layout, and even a hybrid viewfinder and full-size flash mount. Though it has a similar height, the X-Pro1 is noticeably wider and thicker than the X100, which is to be expected given the need to accommodate swappable lenses. It towers over other ILCs, like the Sony NEX-C3 you'll see below, but with a demonstrated performance boost, implied durability and an estimated $1700 body-only price tag, one of the few things separating this from mid-range and even some high-end DSLRs is the mirror. The X-Pro1 includes a 1.23 megapixel 3-inch LCD and a 1.44 megapixel rangefinder-like Hybrid Multi Viewfinder, which offers either a data overlay or a full EVF -- there's a dedicated dial to switch between the two. The camera's new APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor is without question the star of the show, capturing 16 megapixel images with quality that exceeds Sony's NEX-7 and even the aging Canon 5D Mark II -- at least according to Fuji's comparison sample images. A new 6-by-6 RGB pixel arrangement in the imaging sensor helps to eliminate undesired effects such as moire without the need for a resolution-hindering optical low-pass filter. This, along with a thinner (yet still quite durable) lens mount that allows the first element in each lens to be positioned closer to the sensor, helps to improve image quality overall. Based on samples we saw today that were captured with a prototype camera, the sensor really shines with low light shooting -- the X-Pro1 can produce usable 16-by-20-inch prints even at ISO 25,600, which is the maximum supported sensitivity. Identical images shot with the 5D Mark II showed significant noise in shadow areas, while the Sony Alpha A77 (NEX-7) produced an image that you certainly wouldn't want hanging on a wall. The playing field was much more even at ISO 6400, where all three cameras captured usable images -- noise was still visible on both the Canon and Sony cameras, though it was indistinguishable in the Fujifilm print. Again, all of these samples were provided by Fujifilm, and were not the result of independent testing. This isn't a sports camera by any means, but the X-Pro1 can capture stills at 6 frames-per-second, and has been confirmed to snap between 12 and 15 consecutive RAW + JPEG shots when used with a 35 MB/s card. Fuji reps expect that consecutive image count to jump when using a higher-performance card, of course. There are three lenses available at launch, including an 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2, 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4 and a 60mm (91mm equivalent) f/2.4 macro lens. Fujifilm opted to launch the camera with three prime lenses, rather than a zoom, in order to highlight the camera's image quality. A much wider selection of lenses is on the works, however, beginning with a 14mm f/1.4 prime and 18-72mm f/4 zoom lens later this year, followed by a 28mm f/2.8, 23mm f/2, 70-200mm f/4 and 12-24mm f/4 to come in 2013. All of the zoom lenses will include constant f/4 maximum apertures throughout the range, but may or may not ship with built-in optical image stabilization. The three launch primes are expected to sell for about $650 each when they become available in late February. A Leica M-mount adapter is also on the way. The Fujifilm X-Pro1 is without doubt a very intriguing camera, offering image quality that appears to exceed some high-end DSLRs in a smaller (though not much smaller) body. It will no doubt be a hit with deep-pocketed X100 owners, but considering that the camera body alone is expect to run around $1,700 when it hits stores in late February, it'd be stretch the expect the X-Pro1 to fly off shelves and into the homes of amateur and even many advanced ILC-seeking photogs. Check back for a full review as we get closer to the X-Pro1's February launch date. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Panasonic HDTVs show off Time Warner Cable IPTV app with live streaming channels, DVR access Posted: 11 Jan 2012 10:39 AM PST Time Warner launched the TWCable TV live streaming app for iPad last year (Android streaming coming soon), and now at CES Panasonic is showing off a version for TVs. While it's still streaming TV channels from the internet just like the tablet version, the one Panasonic is demonstrating also has DLNA streaming access to anything stored in DVRs on the same home network. We're told the app should work on 2012 and 2011 Panasonic HDTVs, and while there was no word of a release date, the app appeared pretty polished. It's not clear if the cable company is making the jump fully to IPTV yet (or anytime soon), but if it's going to straddle the midpoint then Panasonic's sets are ready for a set-top boxless future. From what we hear, this could launch on multiple platforms later this year. Check out a few more screenshots in the gallery below, we'll let you know about any more details as they become available. |

Plextor announces M3 Pro SSD with 24nm flash and 7mm form factor Posted: 11 Jan 2012 09:57 AM PST Bored by Plextor's safe and steady M3S? Then ponder on its new performance model, the 2.5-inch, SATAIII-sporting M3 Pro. It notches up random read/write speeds by around seven percent to 75,000/69,000 IOPs, while sequential read/writes have also had a marginal bump to 540MB/s and 450MB/s. It's not yet clear how much the new drives will cost when they reach stores in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB varieties next month, but the use of 24nm toggle flash -- which squeezes more storage onto less silicon -- should help to keep pricing relatively sane. Oh, and the 7mm height also means that the M3 Pro will slide happily into the compressed bowels of your Ultrabook -- unless that slot has already been reserved for a Crucial. Read on for the press release. 2012 CES NEW PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT: PLEXTOR ANNOUNCES M3 PRO SERIES SOLID STATE DRIVE New M3 Pro Features Faster Speed, 24nm Toggle Flash, Firmware Updates, and 7mm Form Factor to Fit Ultra-Slim Notebooks Fremont, CA, January 10, 2012- Plextor (www.goplextor.com), leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance digital media and storage equipment, announces the release of its latest Solid State Drive, M3 Pro, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas today. The new M3 Pro Series offers improvements to the current M3S, including a significant boost in sequential and random read/write speeds. Other changes include high-grade 24nm Toggle Flash, firmware updates, and a new 7mm height form factor to fit ultra-slim notebooks. The M3 Pro is a 2.5" form factor drive with a height of only 7mm, making it compatible with standard notebooks and PCs, as well as ultra-slim notebooks. The following storage capacities will be available in early 2012: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The M3 Pro will deliver sequential read/write speeds of up to 540/450 MB/s and random read/write speeds of up to 75,000/69,000 IOPS. Similar to the M3, the M3 Pro uses the latest SATA 6Gb/s (SATA III) interface, a server-grade controller from Marvell, and flash memory from Toshiba. The M3 Pro also features exclusive firmware with True Speed technology, which includes Plextor's proprietary Bad Block Management, Global Wear Leveling, and Instant Restore Technologies. True Speed prevents drastic drops in read/write speed common to other SSDs and, in fact, maintains the M3 Pro's high performance at like-new levels throughout the life of the drive. Plextor exceeds industry requirements with Enterprise Benchmark testing. Before leaving the factory, each Plextor SSD is put through a rigorous 20-hour high temperature burn-in test and strenuous simulations of real-world working environments. As a result Plextor SSDs have a 0.59% average annual failure rate, one of the lowest in the industry. Plextor's no-compromise customer policy includes a five-year ironclad warranty and the highest standards of customer support. "We are excited to announce the M3 Pro at CES this year. It will be Plextor's fastest and most efficient SSD to date, and with the 7mm height, we now offer a solution for ultra-slim notebook users," said Kathy Huynh, Product Marketing Manager. The M3 Pro includes a disk cloning and backup utility for fuss-free transfer of data from a traditional HDD to an SSD. It also comes with a 3.5" mounting bracket and screws for desktop installation making the new drive ideal for both desktop and laptop installations. The M3 will continue to be available to businesses, power users, serious gamers, system integrators, and anyone who demands high efficiency and fault tolerant performance. For those seeking even greater performance, the M3 Pro will be available in February 2012. |
WikiPad prototype hits CES 2012, does exist Posted: 11 Jan 2012 09:29 AM PST Wikipad's promise of a touchscreen, dual-analog gaming controls and glasses-free display meant we were itching to get our gaming fingers on it. Heck, on paper that's the illegitimate love child of the Vita and the 3DS. Fortunately, we managed to bump into the tablet on the CES show floor. It turns out the tablet is quite a svelte thing once you unshackle it from the game controls. With a soft-touch backing, the eight-inch tablet hits the sweet spot size-wise, with a glasses-free 3D display that was able to show off the entirety of Avatar. Otherwise, it's Ice Cream Sandwich as normal. We're going to shrug off the OS sluggishness here to prototype teething, but it's something that we hope disappears in the finished product. Sadly, there's a bit of a major problem tackling a hands-on with this thing -- and it's not the Gamegear-trouncing size of the thing; the gaming controls weren't functioning with any games on the device we had. While the Sonic CD app icon on the Android desktop piqued our interest, it wasn't installed and we were then told that the controls weren't currently working with games. Menu navigation was possible, and the digital inputs were responsive, but a little shaky. The pair of analog sticks feel about right, though obviously we need to see some in-game responsiveness before we pass proper judgement. The device is set to launch during Spring, so hopefully they'll get the gaming side sorted soon. Expect a more in-depth hands-on when there's more to play around with. Sean Cooper contributed to this report. |

Now Google TV 2.0 has arrived, and it's been followed by a slew of new product announcements. Samsung Optical SMART Hub hands-on (video) Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:48 AM PST Tucked away in the corner -- and shadowed by dozens of giant TV panels hanging above -- of Samsung's almost frighteningly large booth we found the Samsung Optical SMART Hub. Samsung's hub lets users stream media from CD / DVD, or a USB hard drive both wirelessly or via ethernet to desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. We have no complaints about streaming quality while testing it on the show floor, pulling the plug on the drive while we were streaming killed the video after 15 seconds or so, plugging it back in restored the film in about the same time. While this is an interesting idea, we can't hep but feel that Blu-ray would have been a nice addition to the mix -- as long as copy protection played nice, that is. Ben Heck guts an iCade to build iPhone gamepad, salutes CES in the process (video) Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:44 AM PST While the majority of the tech industry prepares to go all in on this week's CES madness, a certain Mr. Ben Heck's been busying himself with an homage to the Vegas event. In the spirit of consumer electronics, he's gone ahead and retrofitted a gamepad enclosure to Apple's iPhone. Using a modified circuit board taken from an iCade, Heck was able to craft a plastic enclosure and buttons, made with a 3D printer, to neatly surround the device and borrowed silicon. Click on past the break to watch Ben walkthrough what he does best, which is to say, not gaming. |
T Mobile CTO: next iPhone chipset 'will support AWS' Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:41 AM PST T-Mobile's now the lone national player in the US telecom market that hasn't enjoyed the success of the iPhone, and we've heard on several occasions that its top brass isn't oblivious to the effect that its exclusion from Apple's graces has had on the company, going as far to say that the ball is ultimately "in Apple's court." But in a recent interview, it sounds as though T-Mo CTO Neville Ray has seen some of Apple's roadmap, and the next chipset -- the one that ideally would be included in the next iteration of the iPhone -- will be offering support for Magenta's AWS radio. If true, we'd certainly expect the carrier's bad fortunes to turn around... unless Apple chooses to keep T-Mobile out of its club regardless, which Ray mentioned was a distant possibility. If LTE is also included, the fourth-largest US carrier will still be a bit behind by simply not having the next-gen network connectivity -- although Ray did specify that it isn't impossible to deploy LTE in certain areas by repurposing spectrum -- but we have a feeling there will be plenty of people willing to forego that bullet point on the spec list in order to get their hands on an iPhone with genuine T-Mobile HSPA+ support. |

Apple promises 'education announcement' in New York on January 19th Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:27 AM PST We'd heard it was coming, and for the second year in a row, Apple has disrupted the natural flow of CES by announcing an event of its own. Granted, this one -- slated to be held January 19th at the Guggenheim Museum -- is packing far fewer implications than the Verizon iPhone event of 2011, but suffice it to say, anyone who enjoys "learning" should be tuning in later this month. If you'll recall, it was reported by TechCrunch that the event would be entirely related to publishing, with no new hardware on tap; Fox's own Clayton Morris followed up to say that it'd have something to do with iTunes. We're guessing it'll link somehow to iTunes U, and considering that Apple hasn't made a major public push into the land of EDU since the eMac, perhaps it's time that the company got things like Reading Rainbow into the hands of dazed and confused grade-schoolers everywhere. |
AT&T Mobility's Ralph de la Vega: shared data still in the pipeline Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:20 AM PST Back at the D9 conference last summer, Ralph de la Vega announced AT&T's intentions to bring shared data plans to subscribers. At the time, the AT&T Mobility CEO was coy about a specific launch window for the service, saying only that users could expect the feature sometime soon. We're already well into the new year now and it appears de la Vega still hasn't changed his timing tune. In a post-keynote interview, he revealed the carrier's continued commitment to providing the feature, while also acknowledging the inherent difficulties in bringing it to market. When it does eventually go live, subs can look forward to spreading those MBs across devices (phone and tablets, anyone?), as well as fisticuffing with data-hoggy family members. |
Huawei MediaPad to get Ice Cream Sandwich this quarter, new colors announced Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:05 AM PST Huawei was certainly the eager beaver when it announced this last summer that the MediaPad would be one of the very first tablets with Android 3.2 pre-loaded, and we could tell that the Chinese manufacturer wanted to do something similar with the Honor by offering a demo version of Android 4.0 through its official channels. It's now taking the same initiative with the Huawei MediaPad, announcing that all existing versions of the tablet will receive ICS by the end of the first quarter, and new MediaPad tablets -- including the new color series unveiled in the same press release -- will begin coming pre-loaded sometime in the first quarter as well. This color series takes the existing MediaPad and adds black, brown and pink flavors to your possible options. Check out the full press release below the break for all the details. Huawei's MediaPad Now Comes with Android 4.0 Huawei also unveils new MediaPad color series, operating on Android 3.2 LAS VEGAS, Jan. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that the Huawei MediaPad is now one of the world's first tablets to come pre-loaded with the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. First launched in June 2011, the original MediaPad was the world's first 7-inch Android 3.2 tablet. This latest version of the MediaPad once again provides users with the very latest Android experience, along with access to the newest and hottest services and apps available in the Android marketplace. Huawei also unveiled its new MediaPad color series – fashionable MediaPads in three new colors: shadow black, classic brown, and passion pink and running on Android 3.2. Both MediaPad versions have a high-quality display, with screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels at 217 PPI and supporting 1080P Full HD video playback. Additionally, they come with a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and have a battery capacity of six hours or more. Huawei's new MediaPad color series and the MediaPad with Android 4.0 will be available in selected markets in the first quarter of 2012. Existing MediaPad owners will receive an OTA Android 4.0 upgrade to their tablets by the first quarter of 2012. |

Fuzhou Rockchip hypes RK2918 chip for bargain ICS phones and tablets Posted: 11 Jan 2012 07:48 AM PST Could Fuzhou Rockchip's new RK2918 be the the next go-to processor for a budget Android 4.0 experience? We already spotted this fleck of silicon running in the company's PAD prototype (shown above) and now we're told it'll also power a China-targeted ICS smartphone made by AirTouch, as well as an 'eHome Cloud Solution' that'll somehow make it easier for smartphones, tablets and PCs to share resources over a home network. Rockchip claims it's becoming a "virtual behemoth in North America," but only hands-on time with its latest products will tell whether that means 'big' or just 'monstrous'. Read on for more ambiguous details in the press release. The Sky is the Limit for Rockchip, Chinese Semiconductor Company at 2012 CES FUZHOU, CHINA (9 January 2012) – (Virtual Press Office) - Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics Co., Ltd, a leading developer of fabless semiconductors with an emphasis on Mobile Internet Platforms, will release the RK2918 chip for Google's Android 4.0 Operating System, and announce the pending arrival of their eHome Cloud Solution at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week. But, that's only the beginning! Today, the company announced that they will also feature Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) Tablets with Adobe® Flash® 11 at the world's largest technology trade show. As for the eHome Cloud Solution, Rockchip says the technology will be compatible with Android 2.3 initially, and will update to 4.0 in February 2012. This will allow users to wirelessly sync tablets and smartphones with all computers in their family network, exchanging resources, sharing and even playing. Someone's in the kitchen trying to make a cake and you don't feel like going downstairs? Show them how it's done by connecting your tablet to the kitchen computer or their smartphone, sending directions, photos, even video. The RK2918 chip that drives the eHome Cloud Solution was modeled after the RK2818 chip. A part of the RK27XX series, eHome has aptly been recognized as the most innovative of the series. Rockchip is quickly closing the gap with Apple® technologies, as they are currently ranked second in the world behind Apple in MP3/MP4 solutions. More than 80 percent of the Chinese tablet market is currently supported by Rockchip – a percentage that would make them a virtual behemoth in North America, clearly entrenching the company as the market leader in that country while laying the foundation for expansion into Europe and North America. Rockchip's product can be found in dozens of famous name brand products including Samsung, Philips, Sony, Toshiba and Archos. And with consumer demand for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich poised to explode across all products and platforms on six continents, Europe and the Americas are logical targets for the Chinese company. "The global environment is right for our Android 4.0 product, and as a company, we are in precisely the right position to play a major role in satisfying a healthy portion of that demand," said Chen Feng, Vice President of Rockchip. "We are looking at CES as an opportunity to introduce our latest technology to the trade and the public, as we build towards more solidly establishing our name outside of the Chinese market." Since their inception in 2001, Rockchip has quickly emerged as a major player on the Mobile Internet Platforms world stage. The company's first chip, the 27XX series, provided a great alternative for practically decoding MP3/MP4 products. Last year at CES, Rockchip released its RK2818 processor, and has produced its RK2918 chip only one year later. The 2011 RK2818 chip was the first to decode Google WebM VP8 hardware and is compatible with the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). "The RK2918 provides the heart and soul for the Android 4.0," said Rockchip's Feng. "While a rapidly growing number of tablets are currently using Android 4.0, we have incorporated significant upgrades for the 2.3 version that can be integrated directly from the user's tablet." Rockchip will also introduce their new RK2918-based Android 4.0 3G smartphone – the first-ever for TD-SCDMA – at CES 2012, made by US company AirTouch and prepared for China Mobile Communications Corporation, the world's largest provider. While TD is currently only available in China, Rockchip has chosen to bring the AirTouch 801T to CES because of their new relationship with AirTouch. Clearly, the best is yet to come ... Follow Rockchip on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/Rockchips) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/RockchipsCES) during CES to learn more about the technology the company is showcasing at CES. About Rockchip Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics Co., Ltd, is a China-based company with an emphasis on Mobile Internet Platforms. Lumus see-through wearable display hands-on Posted: 11 Jan 2012 07:34 AM PST Lumus was showing off two different types of wearable displays, the development kit -- or DK-32 shown above -- and the PD-18-4 a monocular version using the same technology. Driven by Lumus' patented Light-guide Optical Element, a micro-display pod, and the Optical Engine which projects light into the lens -- where it is reflected back to the user's eye via reflectors embedded in the lens -- the Lumus' DK-32 delivers a bright 720p 3D-capable display that only weighs 27 grams. The effect is really quite impressive, the colors are bright -- and adjustable using the display pod -- and images were surprisingly clear. But the best part, of course, is that while you're watching YouTube vids and walking about you'll avoid stumbling into objects and passersby. Also on hand was the monocle which was very much like something you'd see in a science fiction flick. With the PD-18-4 we checked out a nav program, some eye tests, and a phone UI mockup. We're stoked at what this development kit will make possible once it gets into the hands of some evil genius. Video and pictures are just past the break. Mat Smith contributed to this report. Posted: 11 Jan 2012 07:26 AM PST Patent lawsuits start out the same way: company X hurls a slew of infringement allegations at company Y, the court demands that the fat be trimmed, and the case's scope is distilled so that only the strongest claims remain. Microsoft's ITC patent case against Barnes & Noble is currently in the midst of this streamlining process, and the parties have agreed to drop claims from four of the patents at issue and eliminated one patent from the proceedings altogether. A full accounting of all the bits of IP that have been eliminated can be found at the source link below. |
IBM maintains top spot in global patent rankings, Canon overtakes Microsoft Posted: 11 Jan 2012 07:24 AM PST IBM has been selling off a sizable number of its patents these past few months, but according to a new research report, the company still ended 2011 with the world's largest artillery. For the 19th straight year, IBM has come out on top of IFI Claims Patent Services' annual rankings of the world's top 50 US utility patent holders, with a record 6,180 patents. That's up five percent from 2010, though there are several contenders hot on its heels. Second-place Samsung saw an eight percent spike in its holdings, while Canon overtook Microsoft for third place, on the strength of an eleven percent year-on surge. Qualcomm, meanwhile, was among the biggest gainers, with a full 40 percent increase, along with RIM, which enjoyed 38 percent growth. Perhaps the biggest winner? The continent of Asia, where a full 25 of the top 50 companies are based. More numbers for your enjoyment after the break. IFI Announces Top Global Companies Ranked By 2011 U.S. Patents Global Stampede for U.S. Patents Continues; IBM Still Tops List But Asian Companies Closing In MADISON, Conn., Jan 11, 2012 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- IFI CLAIMS(R) Patent Services, the leading producer of global patent databases, analytic solutions and innovative web services, today announced its top-50 ranking of global companies awarded the most U.S. utility patents in 2011. IFI uses proprietary algorithms and 50 years' experience analyzing U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) data to compile the de facto annual ranking. Utility patents are the most common patent type and a primary means of protecting intellectual property and technological innovation. IBM remains in the #1 position, as it has for 19 straight years, with a record 6,180 utility patents, up nearly 5 percent from 2010. A wave of Asian companies fixed on amassing U.S. patent grants, however, continues to grow. Samsung trails second with 4,894, up 8 percent, and Canon, up 11 percent, replaces Microsoft in the #3 slot with 2,821. The next two, Panasonic and Toshiba, each move up one position from where they appeared last year. According to IFI, the USPTO issued 224,505 utility patents in 2011, an increase of two percent over 2010's record breaking total. Although patent grants are at all-time high, and global interest in building U.S. portfolios continues to mount, there appears to be a slight lessoning of patent growth among individual companies in the top 50. Cisco, HP, Intel, Microsoft and Oracle all saw fewer patent grants than in 2010. In fact, 16 companies in the top 50 produced fewer patents than last year. Whereby, in 2010, only one of the top 50 received fewer than the prior year. "Global companies, and especially Asian ones, are collecting U.S patents at a dizzying pace, and now Asian firms hold eight of the top 10 slots in the 2011 ranking," said Mike Baycroft, CEO, IFI CLAIMS Patent Services. "This isn't to say that U.S. companies have lost their verve for patent production, as their patent portfolios are also growing. It seems that Asian companies have apparently made it a higher priority." Asian firms now account for 25 or half of the top 50 U.S. patent-grant recipients with U.S. firms capturing 17 slots. Asian countries represented in the top 50 include Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. In terms of pre-grant applications published in 2011, Asian firms captured 28 of the top 50 positions with the U.S. winning 14. Published Applications Provide Glimpse of Future Patent grants are one important piece of what IFI tracks but, according to Baycroft, looking at published pre-grant applications can help spot future trends, i.e. where patent grants will be in a couple of years. IFI's most recent dive into the application data has identified a few trends worth noting. Although in terms of patent grants, IBM is the clear winner, if you look below the surface at published applications it becomes evident that this reign may be threatened in the coming years. For the past two years, Samsung's applications eclipsed those of IBM. In 2011, we saw more than 5,600 published applications from Samsung vs. less than 5,000 for IBM. 2010 also saw a similar result. "Another important factor in evaluating patent trends is to look at portfolio ownership," continued Baycroft. "AT&T, for example, files its patents under multiple assignee names. If we look at its combined portfolio, we would discover more than 1,300 additional new patents in 2011 which would result in a much higher overall ranking. Mergers and acquisitions, divestitures and the direct sale and licensing of patents all contribute to a dynamic IP landscape." Hot Patent Markets: Autos and Wireless The automotive industry showed strong gains in both patent grants and published applications. Japan automakers Honda and Toyota came in neck-in-neck this year in both grants and applications. Honda edged out Toyota for #20 slot by just three grants. While Ford Motor Company did not make it into the Top 50, its 2011 published applications increased by 40 percent. GM saw a 16 percent increase in patent grants coming in at #18 on the grant rankings but saw 11 percent more applications in 2011 than 2010. Apple moved up in the rankings to #39 after breaking into the Top 50 at #46 last year. Broadcom's strong showing at #17, Qualcomm's position at #26 and Research in Motion's move into the Top 50 at #40 show that research and development in mobile communications remains strong. |
Adobe Carousel rebranded as Revel, 'additional photography solutions' promised Posted: 11 Jan 2012 07:19 AM PST It's just been a few months since it was announced, but Adobe's Carousel photo service / app has now already seen its first big change. The company announced last night that Adobe Carousel is now known as Adobe Revel, a name that it says is designed to better accommodate "additional photography solutions" and other new functionality it has planned for the platform. Alongside the name change comes version 1.1 of the Revel app, which addresses a number of minor issues, and adds photo sharing with Flickr, as well as the ability to automatically import photos from your iPhone or iPad's Camera Roll. |
Hands-on with Mercedes-Benz mBrace2 Posted: 11 Jan 2012 07:16 AM PST Mercedes-Benz showed off its next infotainment advancement in the form of mBrace2, a combination of telematics and infotainment, all powered by an embedded 3G modem. If you can make it through the video after the break, you'll see the new Facebook, Google POI and Street View integration, along with the updated browsing experience. Unfortunately, the data connection on the floor made for a sputtery, jilted experience. But that's not the only issue. The system still uses the central COMAND knob for navigating through the menus, but it also serves as a five-way controller to pan and click through the browser. Imagine using a D-pad to poke around the Web and you're not far off. Thankfully, an all-new system is due out in 2014 with the next generation S-Class flagship, but until then, new SL owners and the rest of the 2013 Mercedes lineup will have to make due with this. |

A spreadsheet based music tracker: get ready to rock your accounts (video) Posted: 11 Jan 2012 06:40 AM PST Art and geekery: two sides of the same coin. A fact wonderfully demonstrated by this spiffy spreadheet-based music sequencer. Live-coder and all-round music hacker Patrick -- aka cappel:nord -- spotted the LibreOffice spreadsheet's sonic potential and decided to work his magic. The result is demonstrated in the video below. Sure, it's a little bit senza functionally, but it does appear to have velocity control, based on the cell's number value, as well as effects. Not bad for what the creator claims was "a three hour hack". Sadly there's sparse detail on how exactly the task was accomplished, but if you know your quavers from your variables, grab the source code by tapping the via after the jump. |
Griffin's Helo TC Assault chopper lets you act out your Airwolf fantasies on the cat Posted: 11 Jan 2012 06:30 AM PST It's not just a big stetson that Griffin's rocking up with at CES, it's also packing some brand new gear for the warm climes of Nevada. First up is the wonderfully childish update to last summer's Helo TC Assault RC Helicopter that'll provide you hours of fun (misery for your children / co-workers) thanks to its ability to fire missiles. An infra-red flight deck plugs into your iDevice's headphone jack and will let you control it using its touch interface or using your internal gyroscope. We know it'll cost $60, just ten dollars more for the ability to conduct bombing runs on any animals who stray past your path and there's more information in the press release we've got for you after the break. Griffin Introduces Fun, New Features to Popular AppPowered Toys – HELO TC and Woogie New interactive Woogie App for iOS and missile-launching HELO TC Assault debut at Griffin's CES booth, located in North Hall, Booth 5212 Las Vegas – January 11, 2012 – Griffin Technology, one of the world's foremost creators of innovations for everyday life, will unveil new enhancements to its wildly popular toys at CES – including a Woogie App for iOS that generates authentic, interactive faces for the plush toy, a missile-launching HELO TC remote-controlled helicopter for both iOS and Android, as well as an universally compatible version of the original HELO TC for both Android and iOS platforms. "HELO TC and Woogie were among Griffin's best sellers during the 2011 holiday season, and they continue to be extremely popular among people of all ages," said Mark Rowan, President of Griffin Technology. "We're taking these designs and building on them, introducing fun features like missile launchers, a face-generating app that adds personality to Woogie, and a few compatibility enhancements to bring the toys to an even broader base of mobile users – specifically Android users." HELO TC Assault is ideal for covert missions (like surprising your cubicle mates). It adds the excitement of six live-fire missiles, launched via a quick tap on the smartphone's touchscreen. Just plug the included Flight Deck module into the headphone jack of any iOS or Android device, download the HELO TC Assault app, and users are ready to fly and attack from the sky. The app even provides features not available with other RC helicopters, such as Auto Land which brings the HELO TC Assault down for a safe landing with a tap of the touchscreen controls. HELO TC for Android and iOS is similar in form factor to the original iOS model that launched in Fall 2011, now updated to work with both platforms. To get started, users download the free HELO TC app, plug the Flight Deck into the smartphone's headphone jack and fly the HELO TC in one of two ways: touch control (using a virtual joystick on the touchscreen display) or tilt to steer (tilting the smartphone to maneuver the chopper). Moneto NFC microSD to bring contactless features to any Android phone Posted: 11 Jan 2012 05:54 AM PST DeviceFidelity and Spring Card Systems have teamed up on a NFC-capable microSD card that will hopefully forgo the need of buying specific mobile handsets for the privilege of contactless payments. The card, which has been in development for a few years, houses an NFC radio and antenna that deals with payments through MasterCard's PayPass system. Moneto's iPhone case is already available, offering swipe payment delights for iOS users for $80, and includes $10 of spendable cash. The microSD card is set to land in the next few weeks, pegged at $30. Both will be available at the source below, with plans to support several -- as yet unnamed -- Android devices by Q2, rolling out further throughout 2012. DeviceFidelity and SpringCard Launch moneto, the World's First Multi-Platform Mobile Wallet for iPhone and Android at CES Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 10, 2012 moneto, developed by DeviceFidelity, Inc. and Spring Card Systems LLC, announced today the launch of the world's first commercially available mobile payment solution that provides iPhone and Android users a convenient way to pay while on the go. The moneto iPhone wallet is powered by MasterCard PayPass technology and linked to a general purpose reloadable MasterCard prepaid card to enable iPhone users to make purchases with their phone at the hundreds of thousands of merchants that accept MasterCard PayPass. "For over a decade, MasterCard has led the transformation of mobile phones into secure mobile payment devices," said James Anderson, senior vice president, Mobile and Emerging payments at MasterCard. "We are excited to partner with moneto so that iPhone users can enjoy the convenience of paying for purchases with a simple 'tap' at thousands of PayPass locations around the globe." For the first time, NFC functionality is available directly to consumers at retail without the need to change devices, upgrade plans or sign new contracts. The moneto mobile payments technology uses a NFC-enabled microSD chip embedded in a patented, protective iPhone case. iPhone users simply need to sign up at moneto.me to receive the case, install the moneto app from the app store, and activate their account. Users can launch the moneto app to view their account balance, check transaction history and make everyday in-store purchases with a tap of their iPhone at any PayPass-enabled contactless payments reader at the point of sale. Users can fund their moneto prepaid account through direct deposit, ACH transfer or cash/credit/debit card-enabled third-party money transfer services such as MoneyGram, Western Union, PayPal or GreenDot. "As this breakthrough mobile wallet launches in the US, it not only makes mobile payments available to iPhone users for the first time but it also opens the door for consumers to adopt NFC while pushing mobile commerce forward," said Deepak Jain, DeviceFidelity President and CEO. "We are excited to partner with MasterCard and SpringCard to break the barriers for a rapid effective rollout that will spur both consumers and merchants to adopt this new wave of electronic commerce." moneto also comes with a companion prepaid MasterCard to give users the ability to access cash at ATMs and make online purchases, pay bills or shop at merchants that do not accept contactless payments. moneto also enables card-to-card and wire-fund transfers from a secure internet portal accessible via moneto.me. "Consumers have been hearing about NFC and mobile wallets for years, now with moneto they can finally start using it and with the most popular smartphone device on the planet. The moneto mobile wallet app is focused on delivering a faster and easier shopping experience that is consumer friendly," said Kevin Haddad, president of SpringCard. "Our vision is simple: People who use our applications should not have to worry 'Will this work with my phone?' as consumers can easily make secure purchases regardless of their phone, carrier, or bank." SAFETY AND SECURITY The In2Pay technology behind moneto brings peace of mind to consumers. moneto users can prevent unauthorized access to their account using a PIN that is safely stored in a secure chip inside the microSD. The sleek and durable case design protects the iPhone and the NFC enabled microSD securely stores and encrypts the card information. Additionally, the moneto account is backed by MasterCard's Zero Liability, which protects consumers against unauthorized purchases. PRICING AND AVAILABILITY moneto for iPhone will be available for online ordering in the U.S. immediately at moneto.me for $79.95 which includes $10.00 of pre-loaded funds. The moneto mobile wallet is available in limited release on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3. A number of Android models will also be supported by 2Q12. Additional phone support will be added throughout the year. |
Hands-on with NVIDIA-powered Audi Connect Posted: 11 Jan 2012 05:29 AM PST Last year Audi announced a partnership with NVIDIA to pack its next generation Audi Connect infotainment system with the chip-maker's Tegra graphics processor. The chipset is part of Audi's new modular multimedia system – dubbed MMX – which allows the automaker to upgrade the guts of its infotainment system as new hardware comes to market. Today, Audi showed off the fruits of their tie-up. The new Audi Connect system is set to arrive in the 2013 A3 and Audi trotted out a mock-up of the new compact hatch's interior to show off the next-gen system here at CES. The Touchpad (no, not that one) originally fitted to the Audi A7 and A8 has been incorporated into the MMI knob, allowing users to write individual letters to input destinations, point-of-interest and web searches in place of tedious scrolling. Audi also swapped the traditional buttons flanking the MMI knob with new toggle switches, all of which will make their way to other Audi models in the coming years. Finally, there's the ultra-thin seven-inch LCD powered by that Tegra chip, which renders 3D animations with ease, along with displaying Google Earth navigation and Google Street View images. Check it all out in the video after the jump. |

HomePlug Alliance AV2 specification promises gigabit class networking over electrical wires Posted: 11 Jan 2012 05:00 AM PST It's been a long time coming, but the Homeplug Powerline Alliance is introducing a new class of home networking technology known as AV2, which is meant to better facilitate HD content transmission over electrical wiring. With MIMO functionality (multiple-input and multiple-output) at its core, the new specification features gigabit class speeds and comes from a decade of field tests. What's more, the new standard promises to bring greater in-home coverage beyond WiFi capabilities while maintaining compatibility with existing HomePlug AV / IEEE 1901 products. Whether consumers are willing to embrace yet another new specification from the HomePlug group remains to be seen, although we can imagine a few Netflix junkies will be downright giddy. For the complete deets, the PR follows the break. HomePlug® Powerline Alliance Announces AV2 Specification for Next-Generation Broadband Speeds over Powerline Wires Global Standard Meets Burgeoning Demands of Home Networking with Expanded Coverage and Performance Portland, Ore. - January 9, 2012 - The HomePlug® Powerline Alliance (www.homeplug.org), the world's leading industry group for powerline networking, today announced the availability of the HomePlug AV2 specification. This new HomePlug technology enables significant performance and coverage for broadband networking over powerline wires while remaining fully interoperable with existing HomePlug AV / IEEE 1901 compliant products used in millions of consumers' homes and widely available worldwide from service providers and retail stores. HomePlug's digital entertainment technology provides high-quality networking over existing wiring within the home to any device with an Ethernet port or even to extend the range of a Wi-Fi router. The HomePlug AV2 specification is based on more than a decade of real-world experience and extensive field tests conducted by the alliance's AV Technical Working Group validating in-home coverage and performance across five countries with wide variances in home construction. HomePlug AV2 technology supports gigabit-class broadband speeds, making it ideal for Internet video, multi-room IPTV, online gaming, HD audio and other high demand networking uses, particularly when using multiple HD devices simultaneously. Expanded Coverage and Performance Enhances delivery of HD/3D streams throughout the home Anticipates move towards ultra-high-speed broadband access and services Developed by the HomePlug AV Technical Working Group (Broadcom, devolo, France Telecom, Marvell, Qualcomm Atheros, Ralink, Sony, SPiDCOM Technologies, STMicroelectronics) Key Features Gigabit-class PHY Rate (physical interface rate) Support for MIMO PHY (multiple-input and multiple-output) Whole home coverage with inherent repeater functionality High-definition video and audio support without noticeable dropouts or artifacts Interoperable with HomePlug AV and HomePlug Green PHY devices Power save: Active, Standby and Idle Today, HomePlug Certified products are available in retail channels from many manufacturers and are being deployed by more than 30 service providers globally. The HomePlug powerline technology family includes HomePlug AV for broadband applications, HomePlug Green PHY (GP) for smart grid/smart energy applications, and now HomePlug AV2 for next-generation broadband speeds. HomePlug Certified products with HomePlug AV, AV2 and GP technology are fully interoperable and support the IEEE 1901 powerline communications standard. "HomePlug AV2 is the much anticipated and logical follow on to the successful HomePlug AV specification," said Kurt Scherf, senior analyst for Parks Associates. "AV2 greatly increases the capacity of home networks to support ultra-high speed applications by increasing the network's bandwidth and also greatly improves reliable delivery of that bandwidth to all areas of the home." "The explosion in demand for robust home networking is driving the need for ultra-high speed broadband across the home," commented Rob Ranck, president of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance. "HomePlug AV2 leads the way in enabling a variety of manufacturers to deliver this capability with maximum interoperability." |
