Netflix: Warner Bros. movies now available after 56 day delay Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:36 AM PST Warner Bros. must have thought that CES was a good week to bury bad news, but unfortunately most people pay attention when you pull a move like this. Netflix has confirmed the rumor that if you wanna rent movies from the aforementioned studio, you'll have to wait 56 days, twice as long as the previous window. In the press-release (available after the break), the studio states it's doubling the window to maximize potential of its new releases. It also heavily implies that the studio was threatening to withdraw access to its library unless the rental service complied. |
Sprint's Galaxy Nexus shown on Engadget's CES stage by David Owens! Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:33 AM PST Sprint's VP of Product David Owens helped kick off our first CES with our own stage inside the Las Vegas Convention Center, and honestly, we couldn't have asked for a better way to start. After all, the Sprint edition of the Galaxy Nexus didn't even exist in the minds of the public just two weeks back, and now it's being showcased right here in front of our very eyes. We'll be filming a more in-depth hands-on with the device in the hours ahead, so keep it locked for our impressions and comparisons with the unlocked HSPA+ and Verizon Wireless variants of the handset. Keep tabs on our next interview right here! |

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:30 AM PST If you'll recall, along with its pre-CES unveiling of new gaming and lifestyle headsets, Turtle Beach promised a bigger "surprise announcement" for day one of the show here in Vegas. Well, it's just spilled the beans on an impressive new duo of Xbox-oriented (and PlayStation compatible) Ear Force wireless gaming headsets. Meet the XP400 with Dolby 5.1 virtual surround sound and the identical, but stereo, XP300. We're told that they're essentially the younger siblings of the company's PX5-rooted XP500, featuring a similar design with totally wireless connection to the Xbox 360 (thanks to TB's Xbox Chat Adapter), and a dual-pairing Bluetooth radio for taking calls while gaming. Furthermore, both headsets actually improve upon the XP500's, in a few key areas including: better button placement on the earcups, a new 2.4/5GHz dual-band WiFi 2.4GHz transmitter to avoid interference from nearby wireless devices and an included 15-hour rechargeable battery so you won't be hunting for AAAs. While both headsets feature customizable EQs, the XP400 steps things up from the XP300 with tweakable Dolby 5.1 simulated surround sound, thanks to some special work on Turtle Beach's end. Notably, it's the first headset from Turtle with the ability, dubbed "adjustable surround sound angles," and it means you'll now be able to customize the placement of the virtual speakers to your preference, rather than being stuck to Dolby Headphone's usual preset parameters. Both headsets will be available in earlier 2012, with the the XP400 priced at $220 and the XP300 at 50 bucks less. If you'd like the full rundown of specs and features, you'd best check out the press release we've kindly embedded just past the break. CES 2012: TURTLE BEACH ANNOUNCES EAR FORCE® XP400 AND EAR FORCE® XP300 FULLY WIRELESS, PREMIUM GAMING HEADSETS Fully-Wireless Bluetooth Chat and Reduced Interference via Integrated Dual Band Wi-Fi Technology, Deliver Premium Performance for Xbox 360 Elmsford, NY, January 10, 2011 – Turtle Beach, the market leading pioneers of the console gaming headset category, today announced the introduction of the feature-packed Ear Force XP400 and XP300 premium wireless gaming headsets. Optimized for wireless game audio and chat on Xbox 360® (and also compatible with PlayStation 3®), these headsets debut 2.4/5GHz dual-band Wi-Fi RF wireless technology that virtually eliminates interference with wireless networks in the home. The XP400 and XP300 can be seen along with the full offering of Turtle Beach products at the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall 1 – Booth #21327, during the International Consumer Electronics Show from January 10 to 13, 2012. The Ear Force XP400 and XP300 bring the wireless Bluetooth chat of the acclaimed XP500 headset, add the ease of rechargeable batteries and introduce premium features that once again push the limits of gaming headset technology. With the exclusive introduction of groundbreaking 2.4/5GHz dual-band WiFi technology, these new headsets avoid the crowded 2.4GHz band used by wireless networks, phones and other devices in the home to deliver interference-free game audio. By automatically switching between the 2.4 and 5.0MHzbands and working within the WiFi specification, the XP400/XP300 headsets navigate around other radio signals and coexist within the same spectrum as wireless networks, delivering optimum signal performance. "Interference from common 2.4 MHz wireless devices like game consoles, routers, telephones and other gadgets is now a thing of the past with these new headsets." said Michael Arzt, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Turtle Beach. "Not only have we jumped to the 5GHz spectrum, completely avoiding the crowded 2.4GHz band, we've also adopted the Wi-Fi specification so our headsets can coexist within the wireless-LAN spectrum rather than search for free space around WLAN signals. Adding dual-pairing Bluetooth chat from the XP500 and a rechargeable battery makes these headsets perfect for Xbox 360 owners who want premium performance and convenience." Equally noteworthy, the Ear Force XP400 also introduces Turtle Beach's new post-processing system for Dolby® Surround Sound. This technology allows for fully adjustable speaker angles that enable a user to change the positions of the virtual 5.1 speakers by selecting between six different speaker angle settings to optimize the surround sound effect. Now even more gamers can hear subtle directional details on the battlefield with 360 degree accuracy, from enemy footsteps to weapon reloads. The Ear Force XP300 is a stereo headset that includes the same 2.4/5GHz dual-band Wi-Fi game audio, Bluetooth chat and rechargeable battery at a lower price. XP300 owners can eventually upgrade to the same Dolby Surround Sound technology of the XP400 by adding the new Ear Force DSS2 Dolby Surround Sound Processor, also introduced at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. Samsung 55-inch Super OLED TV eyes-on (video) Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:25 AM PST After our introduction yesterday, we've been itching to get a closer look at Samsung's 55-inch Super OLED television. While this isn't a final production model, it's still pretty darn amazing to behold. Razor thin, the colors are as good as you'd hope from a TV with pixel-to-pixel control. Keep in mind, this bad boy will feature a quad-core processor and full 3D support. You'll have to wait until later in 2012 to snag yours and we're sure it'll cost you quite a bit. Go ahead and peek at our shots below and jump past the break for a quick eyes-on. Zach Honig contributed to this report. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Intel demos Medfield-based smartphone reference design at CES (video) Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:22 AM PST There we go! Head past all the months-old Ultrabooks in Intel's CES booth, and you'll stumble across something less pedestrian: a reference smartphone, based on the chipmaker's Medfield platform. How it looks is irrelevant, really -- that chintzy, fingerprint-prone slab of plastic offers no hints as to what the Samsungs and HTCs of the smartphone world are going to create. What matters here is what's inside: this 4-inch handset packs a single-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2460 chip, XXM 6260 modem and Intel GMA graphics, along with your requisite WiFi radio, accelerometer, etc. (Intel had Gingerbread installed, though that'll hardly be current by the time Medfield starts shipping.) Though battery life will naturally vary by manufacturer, this particular device houses a 1,460mAh battery promising 45 hours of audio playback, eight hours of 3G voice calls, five hours of 3G browsing and 14 days of standby. At the same time, Intel was demoing Modern Combat 2, as you can see in that lead shot, and playing HD video playing through the phone's micro-HDMI slot. Look closely at those videos below, and you'll see the output is mostly smooth with some slight stuttering, though trust us when we say video playback and gaming were more fluid on the device itself. Have a peek below and judge for yourselves, and hopefully one day in the not-too-distant future we'll be able to size up the battery life situation too. Gracenote Entourage: the ACR TV platform has a name! Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:20 AM PST Remember Gracenote's plans for an Automatic Content Recognition system for TV? (think: Shazam to help you work out which The Mentalist episode is on). Now it's got a name: Gracenote Entourage. It'll run on smartphones and tablets to identify movies, TV shows and music just from the audio clip. It'll then show you related programming, actor bios and, erm, relevant advertising (but hey, they've gotta make money somehow, yeah?). It'll run on mobile devices and smart TVs, although would that really be easier than pressing the "TV Guide" button on your remote? We'll leave that for you to judge. Gracenote Launches Interactive TV Platform Gracenote Entourage™ Enables Electronics Manufacturers, Content Distributors and Developers to Deliver Interactive Video Solutions LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW (CES) 2012 --Gracenote® is transforming the interactive TV experience for viewers with the launch of Gracenote Entourage™, an Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) platform. Gracenote Entourage will enable electronics manufacturers, content distributors and developers to turn the TV watching experience into a vehicle to generate revenue and build direct and engaging relationships with viewing audiences. "The era of simply sitting on the couch and watching TV is over. Gracenote is enabling a dramatic transformation for TV as we know it – taking it from a passive experience to one in which a whole new world of search and discovery is available from a variety of sources," said Stephen White, president of Gracenote. "This will give viewing audiences new and exciting ways to engage in the TV experience, while providing content owners, CE device makers, and application developers ways to drive new revenue." At its core, Gracenote Entourage features audio fingerprinting technology that allows smart phones and tablets to instantly and automatically identify movies, TV programs and music in real time by simply "listening" to short sound clips. Then, Gracenote Entourage unlocks data from the Gracenote database to create paths for TV viewers to explore related content, such as actor filmographies and advertising brands, and link to on-demand services to purchase, stream and download content that intrigues them. Gracenote Entourage can be featured on mobile devices or integrated directly into Smart TVs to let viewers identify content from any source playing on-screen, whether it is coming from their cable box or streaming from an on-demand service. This creates opportunities for TV manufacturers to connect viewers to related programs and help them discover movies and TV shows from on-demand sources built into the Smart TV. Gracenote Entourage is a fully hosted solution that leverages Gracenote's network infrastructure and rich set of global data, including descriptions of more than 130 million songs as well as filmmaker and cast bios for movies, TV listings, and Album and Movie Cover Art which power the world's leading music and video products - from Apple iTunes and HTC smart phones to Ford Sync and Sony BRAVIA TVs. |
Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:10 AM PST We weren't exactly looking for the "Switchblade of CES 2012," but Razer's latest concept, nicknamed "Project Fiona," may take the title anyway. This concept gaming tablet flanks a 10.1-inch multitouch screen with a pair of nunchuk-like four-button controllers, lending the slab a bit of flightstick flair. Its dual-stick wings won't help you fly through ShadowGun however -- this slate is a Windows machine. An Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor hopes to keep Fiona fragging with the desktop kiddies, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan told us, giving it the chops to run modern PC games right out of the box. The Prototype was built specifically with mobile PC gamers in mind, said Min-Liang, and will feature a hybrid user interface (a hub activated via a upcoming Windows 8 app) designed to help gamers immediately jump into local multiplayer matches. He described a group of friends seamlessly jumping into a round of Hawx 2, and "dogfighting face to face." It sounds like he wants Fiona to revitalize the Lan party. Although most PC games should be fully playable without any special tweaks or modificaitons, Min-Liang said developers would have the option of adding Fiona specific controls to a game, such as a touch control scheme, or accelerometer joystick emulation. Optimization isn't necessary but exclusive control schemes will be possible. In addition to its Ivy Bridge chops, the concept gaming slate features enhanced audio with Dolby Home Theater v4 and built-in force feedback. Razer wasn't ready to talk battery life, but said that they hope to launch the slab in Q3 or Q4, after Windows 8 launches, for under $1000. How's it play? We'll let you know as soon as we get our hands on it. Until then, feel free to read on for Fiona's official press release. RAZER™ SHOWCASES PC GAMING TABLET CONCEPT DESIGN AT CES 2012 Project Fiona – the only tablet in the world designed for PC gaming Consumer Electronics Show, Las Vegas, Nevada, - Jan 10th, 2012 – Razer™, the world leader in high performance gaming hardware, is proud to announce their newest gaming concept design – the Project Fiona PC Gaming Tablet. Unlike other tablets designed for general use and casual gaming, Project Fiona is a tablet concept designed to play the most popular PC games of today with an intuitive control setup for a phenomenal on-the-go gaming experience. Powered by Intel® Core™ i7 Razer worked closely with Intel to harness the power of its third generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor in Project Fiona. As a result, Razer's tablet is more akin to a fully functioning PC; and yet in a form factor and platform highly familiar to everybody. Instead of relying on developers to work on a suite of brand new applications for Project Fiona, many PC games today run natively on the tablet concept without the need to be ported, optimized, or developed from scratch. Moreover, Project Fiona will feature one of the most powerful processors integrated in a tablet form factor. Instead of the casual and mobile-only games that run on under-powered tablets, Project Fiona will run full-fledged PC games that have never run on a tablet form factor before until today. "Project Fiona's combination of high performance Intel-based gaming hardware and innovative tablet design is specifically focused for PC gamers. It will unleash the PC gamer to play their existing and future high-end games in one of the most exciting new form factors – a tablet," said Brad Graff, Director of Partner Marketing, Netbook & Tablet Group, Intel. PC Gaming User Interface Designed For a Tablet Form Factor Razer's multi-award winning user interface and ergonomics team have developed an all-new hybrid user interface scheme for Project Fiona. Featuring integrated dual game controllers with ultra-precise analog sticks, Project Fiona runs gamepad-enabled PC games right out of the box. Along with the game controllers, Project Fiona is also designed with ultra-precise accelerometers and a highly sensitive multi-touch screen. This provides game developers with new game experiential opportunities to develop around the hybrid game control experience offered by Project Fiona. It also ensures current-generation PC games run on the tablet concept, as well as any existing games optimized for the touchscreen interface of a tablet. Future games developed for Fiona are expected to take advantage of not just the integrated gamepad controls but also integrate core game functionality controls for the touchscreen and accelerometer-based controls. "While multi-touch screens have become the de facto user interface for tablets, they are not the right interface for serious PC gaming," said Min-Liang Tan, CEO, Razer. "The user interface we have designed for Project Fiona allows all existing PC games to be played right out of the box and also provides game developers new opportunities as they develop next-gen games on a highly-intuitive platform. Both developers and gamers are going to love the new user interface that combines the best of a gamepad, multi-touch screen and accelerometers for an all-new gaming experience on-the-go." The Most Immersive Gaming Experience on a Tablet To further intensify the gaming experience with Project Fiona, Razer's integrated dual controllers deliver full force feedback, so every explosion or gun recoil can be felt in the gamer's hands. THX® Ltd., which works with many of the world's most innovative audio and video home entertainment manufacturers, agrees that the tablet adds tremendous flexibility to a gamer's lifestyle. "Video games, music and entertainment that previously were mainly enjoyed within the home can now be enjoyed anywhere through tablets such as the Razer Concept PC Gaming Tablet," said Chris Golson, Senior Director, Business Development, THX. |
Ceton previews multi-room DVR and Echo extender (hands-on) Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:01 AM PST While the Q and Echo might look like Microsoft Media Center, they aren't. Based on the Windows 7 Embedded platform, the Q picks up where Microsoft left off but still leverages the great DVR functionality and free guide data. In addition to being used as an extender for the Q, the Echo is also a fully compliant Extender for Windows Media Center. The Echo will support both ethernet and MoCA for communication to the source and has HDMI-CEC for control as well as an included remote. When used with the Q, it will extend the entire Q experience, including streaming sources and enhanced search that facilitates content discovery. Speaking of the Q, that slot up front is a Blu-ray drive and in addition to being able to play Blu-ray Discs, the plan is to integrate as many streaming sources as possible (no partners to announce yet, though). The Q will also work with other Extenders for Windows Media Center, like the Xbox 360, but while the custom themes are there, the other streaming options aren't. Ceton has even developed a Windows 8 Metro and Windows Phone 7 app to extend the Q experience to the handhelds -- iOS apps are on the road map. These apps are primarily designed to be companions to the Q's search and discovery features, but will provide access to content via WiFi. |
TuneIn Radio comes to Ford SYNC AppLink, brings 50,000 radio stations with it Posted: 10 Jan 2012 11:00 AM PST Unhappy with the radio selection in your auto? If you're rocking a Ford equipped with SYNC AppLink and a smartphone, that selection is about to get a whopping 50,000 bigger thanks to TuneIn Radio. An updated version of that app enables support for Dearborn's auto interconnect which'll allow drivers to tune into AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations. And naturally like everything else SYNC, it'll be just as happy taking commands over voice. The updated app should hit the App Store soon, but we'd imagine an update to the Android version isn't far out. TuneIn Radio App to Offer Drivers 50,000+ Global Stations Through Voice-Controlled Ford SYNC AppLink • TuneIn Radio app will offer drivers more than 50,000 AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations featuring music, sports and news from around the world • The addition of the TuneIn Radio app to the growing list of available apps for SYNC® reflects Ford's commitment to keep pace with customer desires and consumer electronics trends LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10, 2012 – The in-car listening options for Ford vehicles equipped with SYNC® AppLink™ will soon grow by more than 50,000 when TuneIn Radio joins the list of smartphone apps that are compatible with the system. Ford and Palo Alto, Calif.-based TuneIn announced at the 2012 International CES that the TuneIn Radio app will be available for use with vehicles equipped with SYNC AppLink, and will provide drivers with another listening option that can be controlled hands-free through voice commands. AppLink builds on the award-winning SYNC connectivity system by enabling drivers to access and control apps on their smartphones by simply using their voice, allowing their hands to stay on the wheel and their eyes on the road. "Smartphone apps have ingratiated themselves into the lives of consumers to such a degree that we have come to depend on them for much of our news and entertainment," said Doug VanDagens, global director of Ford Connected Services. "With the addition of TuneIn, SYNC is reflecting that trend while dramatically increasing the global listening choices for Ford drivers." TuneIn is a free service that lets people listen to live local and global music, sports, talk and news by offering more than 50,000 AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations along with more than 1 million on-demand programs streaming from all corners of the world. Using voice commands only, drivers of SYNC-equipped vehicles can control TuneIn and perform such tasks as search and listen to radio stations worldwide by artist or genre. For example, by saying, "Explore genre," users can select hundreds of genres of music or talk stations like classic rock or German talk. Users also can search geographically by saying "Explore location." TuneIn will then rank the most popular stations from the chosen location and start playing. More than 250 locations from around the world can be accessed via voice control. "TuneIn captivates people by offering unprecedented access to listen to anything they want from local talk radio to live sports to music," said John Donham, CEO of TuneIn. "With TuneIn, Ford drivers can now more easily enjoy the world's audio from their favorite hometown stations to broadcasts half a world away – making listening even more global and personal." TuneIn is available in 10 languages and on more than 150 devices across all major smartphones and tablets, connected home stereos, smart TVs, car dashboards and online at www.tunein.com. Imagination Technologies unveils G6200 and G6400, first two GPUs based on PowerVR Series6 Posted: 10 Jan 2012 10:54 AM PST First announced in February of last year, Imagination Technologies has officially announced the licensing availability of its first two GPUs based on the Series6 platform. The PowerVR G6200 and G6400 each promise to bring low power graphics to unprecedented levels and are said to deliver up to 20 times more horsepower than the current generation while also being five times more efficient. In tangible terms, the Series6 GPU cores are capable of exceeding 100 gigaflops and are said to approach the teraflop range. All chipsets based on Series6 are backward compatible with Series5 and fully support OpenGL 3.x, 4.x and ES, along with OpenCL 1.x and DirectX 10. Further, specific models will also support DirectX 11.1 with full WHQL compliance. Poised to shake up the mobile gaming ecosystem, Imagination has already lined up partners that include ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments, Renesas Electronics and MediaTek. The full PR, complete with all the bragging, can be found after the break. Imagination announces first PowerVR Series6 GPU cores International CES, Las Vegas, USA: Imagination Technologies, a leading multimedia and communication technologies company, announces the first IP cores in its ground-breaking PowerVR Series6 GPU core family. The PowerVR G6200 and G6400 GPU IP cores are the first in a growing family of PowerVR Series6 GPU cores. PowerVR Series6 sets a new benchmark for high performance, ultra-low power GPU cores, scalable for markets from mobile and tablet to high end gaming and computing. The innovative PowerVR Rogue architecture, on which Series6 is based, builds on the maturity and unrivalled success of the previous five generations of PowerVR GPUs. It enables Imagination's partners to deliver amazing user experiences in devices from innovative 'natural' user interfaces to ultra-realistic gaming, as well as enabling new applications never before thought of from advanced content creation and image processing to sophisticated augmented reality and environment-aware solutions. Based on a scalable number of compute clusters the PowerVR Rogue architecture is designed to target the requirements of a growing range of demanding markets from mobile to the highest performance embedded graphics including smartphones, tablets, PC, console, automotive, DTV and more. Compute clusters are arrays of programmable computing elements that are designed to offer high performance and efficiency while minimising power and bandwidth requirements. The first PowerVR Series6 cores, the G6200 and G6400, have two and four compute clusters respectively. Delivering the best performance in both GFLOPS/mm2 and GFLOPS/mW, PowerVR Series6 GPUs can deliver 20x or more of the performance of current generation GPU cores targeting comparable markets. This is enabled by an architecture that is around 5x more efficient than previous generations. PowerVR Series6 GPU cores are designed to offer computing performance exceeding 100GFLOPS (gigaFLOPS) and reaching the TFLOPS (teraFLOPS) range enabling high-level graphics performance from mobile through to high-end compute and graphics solutions. The PowerVR Series6 family will deliver a significant portfolio of new technologies and features, including: an advanced scalable compute cluster architecture; high efficiency compression technology including lossless image and parameter compression and the widely respected PVRTC™ texture compression; an enhanced scheduling architecture; dedicated housekeeping processors; and a next generation Tile Based Deferred Rendering architecture. These features combine to produce a highly latency tolerant architecture that consumes the lowest memory bandwidth in the industry while delivering the best performance per mm2 and per mW. Says Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination: "Based on our experience in shipping hundreds of millions of GPU cores, plus extensive market and customer feedback, we have been able to set a new standard in GPU architecture, particularly in the areas of power, bandwidth and efficiency – the key metrics by which GPUs are now judged. We are confident that with the Rogue architecture we have a very clear technology advantage and an exceptional roadmap for the PowerVR Series6 family which our partners can depend on." Imagination believes that next generation devices, utilizing the extraordinary GPU performance that PowerVR Series6 delivers at optimal power levels, will change the landscape of software development as application developers start to realize the enormous parallel processing power available to them via Series6 GPU cores for both graphics and more generalized GPU Compute-based high performance computing tasks. All members of the Series6 family support all features of the latest graphics APIs including OpenGL ES 'Halti'*, OpenGL 3.x/4.x, OpenCL 1.x and DirectX10 with certain family members extending their capabilities to full WHQL-compliant DirectX11.1 functionality. PowerVR GPU technology is driven by one of the world's largest engineering teams dedicated to graphics processor development, complemented by the industry's most mature and extensive ecosystem of dedicated third party developers, who have already created hundreds of thousands of apps optimized for PowerVR enabled devices to date. Imagination's PowerVR graphics technologies are the de facto standard for mobile and embedded graphics, with over 90 licenses by leading semiconductor companies, and have shipped in more than 600m devices to date. PowerVR Series6 has already secured eight licensees, and been delivered to multiple lead partners. Among the PowerVR Series6 partners announced so far are ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments, Renesas Electronics and MediaTek. PowerVR Series6 GPU cores are available for licensing now. PowerVR Series6 GPUs are fully compatible with Series5 and Series5XT PowerVR SGX GPUs and complement the existing Series5/5XT families of PowerVR GPUs, which continue to accelerate in terms of design-wins and new deployments, including many designs using the multi-processing (MP) core variants of the Series5XT family. |
Samsung eyes Nokia's cellphone throne, seems pretty confident about it Posted: 10 Jan 2012 10:50 AM PST Nokia has enjoyed a healthy 14-year reign as the world's top cellphone manufacturer, but Samsung thinks that run will come to an end this year. Speaking to reporters at CES last night, Samsung CEO Choi Gee-Sung said his company overtook Espoo in revenue last quarter, and predicted that it'll soon pass Nokia in shipments, as well. Choi's forecast was apparently based on the Korean firm's strong momentum, coupled with Nokia's recent struggles. The executive went on to say that Samsung's sales have grown at a surprisingly quick rate, and that the company plans to ramp up investment in the coming years. "With the current sales growth rate, we are likely to... achieve the 2015 sales target of $200 billion earlier [than expected]," Choi explained. Consider the gauntlet laid. |

Tamaggo 360-imager teams up with your PC or phone to take 360-degree panoramic pictures Posted: 10 Jan 2012 10:01 AM PST There's a lot of ways to capture panoramic photos, from phone attachments for iPhone and Android to throwable camera orbs, and now there's the Tamaggo 360-imager. It's a small, 7 ounce, 14-megapixel camera that can capture fully viewable 360 degree images using built-in panamorph technology -- which allows users to navigate, zoom and crop images as soon as they're snapped. The device is controlled using its 2-inch LCD touchscreen, and charges its Li-polymer battery via mini USB, which it also uses to connect to your PC. Bluetooth's onboard to connect your phone, and WiFi's there to allow for easy photo sharing on email and social networks. The 360-imager will be available in Q2 of 2012 for $200, and stay tuned -- we'll be seeing the thing in person here at CES. Tamaggo Inc. Previews First Consumer Device with Integrated, Built-in, Panomorph Technology that Captures 360° High-resolution, Navigable Images with Just One Click The Tamaggo 360-imager, with patented optics, makes affordable advanced technology that has not been readily available to consumers LAS VEGAS, CES 2012, Jan. 10, 2012 - Tamaggo Inc., a consumer technology company based in Montreal, Canada, previews here today what will be the first consumer picture-taking device with fully integrated, built-in panomorph technology that lets users capture 360° high-resolution, navigable images with just one click. The device, called the Tamaggo 360-imager, is expected to be available through retailers and e-tailers for under US$200 in Q2 2012. "The Tamaggo experience is so new that it goes beyond what consumers conceive of as photography today," said Tamaggo CEO James Ionson, a former senior executive at Polaroid Corporation who has authored various imaging patents. "It's so new that we came up with a term to describe the process of producing images with the Tamaggo, and that's Tamaggraphy," he continued, adding that the device also redefines how we think of a camera. "With patented ImmerVision Enables panomorph technology, the ergonomically designed, 14-megapixel Tamaggo 360-imager goes well beyond the 360° options in today's consumer marketplace," said Tamaggo Founder and President Jean-Claude Artonne, who also is founder of ImmerVision – which advanced optical and software panoramic technologies and is becoming the leading standard for high-end commercial and government security applications. "Think about the images that you have been able to see in virtual tours," he explained. "Virtual-tour technology has been the province of professionals using expensive equipment; but the Tamaggo will finally put this capability into the palms of consumers." "When viewing a Tamaggraph on a computer, tablet, smartphone or other compatible device," said Artonne, "you can move around and look at different details within the image – seeing what was above, below or even behind you as the shot was taken. "One of the unique features," he continued, "is that the Tamaggo can freeze the action taking place within the entire 360°-imaging environment, unlike a standard stitching solution that needs multiple snapshots taken over a few seconds, such as required by Microsoft Photosynth and other stitching applications." Artonne, also the author of many imaging patents, noted that Tamaggraphs can be taken from distances between 0 (zero) and infinity, no focus required. He also noted that the Tamaggo captures images in four automatic orientations: Sky 360°, Ground 360°, horizontal panoramic and vertical panoramic. The Tamaggo, said Artonne, "knows" if it's being held to capture 360° or to capture panoramic images, an "intuitive" feature that is patent pending. "In addition," he said, "Not only can you navigate through your Tamaggraphs and easily share them via social networking platforms, but you can also crop scenes into high-quality pictures that can be printed. "We believe that the Tamaggo 360-imager has the potential to set a new milestone in the history of imaging," declared CEO Ionson, who has been most recently at the forefront of 360° intelligent-video technology in the business-to-business arena. "The market, of course, will decide," said Ionson. Description The Tamaggo 360-imager is the first picture-taking device with fully integrated, built-in panomorph optical and software technology that enables consumers to capture 360ºhigh-resolution, navigable images with just one click. It operates in four orientations: Sky 360, Ground 360, horizontal panorama and vertical panorama – and is the first intuitive device with position sensors that "know" if the user is holding it to capture 360ºor if you are shooting for horizontal or vertical panoramic images. The Tamaggo 360-imager, which is a 2012 CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards honoree in the digital imaging category,is ergonomic and comfortably fits in the palm of one hand. It will be available from retailers and e-tailers for under US$200 in Q2 2012. The User Experience The Tamaggo is different from a traditional camera in two ways: the experience in taking the picture and the experience in what you can do afterwards. That's why we say it's not photography, it's Tamaggraphy. · During Image Capture: No need to worry about what's in the "frame" or what's out – the Tamaggo 360-imager captures it all. With one click and the imager held upright, the Tamaggo user can capture a 360ºimmersive image. Or, with one click and the imager held straight out in front, the user can capture a horizontal or vertical panoramic image. Plus, Tamaggraphers can be in the picture, either by holding the imager in a certain position or by using the integrated stand that triggers an auto-delay timer for remote image capture. Or they can hold the Tamaggo above their heads to capture 360ºand remain out of the picture. · After Image Capture: The user can pan around, or navigate, and zoom into their 360 images; then they can edit and crop into multiple scenes to create digital albums; and they can share navigable images via email or social networking. Features · 14MP sensor with wide dynamic range · ImmerVision Enables panomorph 360ºoptics · 2" diagonal LCD touch screen · Intuitive orientation sensor · Solid state · Mini USB and wireless (WiFi and Bluetooth) · Weight: 7 oz (190g) · Dimensions: Length -3.62 inches (92mm) Height -2.19 inches (55.8mm) Width- 2.40 inches (61.1 mm) · Battery: Li-Polymer rechargeable · Integrated stand for remote image capture · Compatible with multiple devices: mobile phones, computers, netbooks and tablets |

This free iTwin upgrade enables users to share files stored on a computer with multiple people at the same time. With iTwin Multi, multiple users and workgroups can simply and safely connect multiple iTwins to the same computer to remotely access, edit and share files, without the headaches associated with email, VPN, or remote access software. For example, using iTwin Multi, field sales reps can remotely download or upload the latest confidential client contracts and proposals. Similarly, small businesses such as CPA firms can securely share large accounting files and other sensitive data with multiple clients. "With iTwin Multi, iTwin not only provides file access but also a simple and secure means to share and collaborate. This feature was developed in response to the demands of many of our customers," said Lux Anantharaman, co-founder and CEO of iTwin. Accessing information while on the go is a must in today's fast paced world. However, technologies like cloud-storage and traditional USB flash drives often lack sufficient security, privacy, or affordable capacity. iTwin is a breakthrough in file access technology that was developed with these factors in mind, yet is really easy to use. iTwin is the first and only remote file access solution that is truly Plug'N'Play, and that also provides two-factor authentication and end-to-end encryption. Comprising two identical parts, iTwin can be used on any Internet-connected computer running Windows or Mac OS X. Plug one half of iTwin into the computer, drag'n'drop files for remote access and those files can be accessed from any other computer into which the matching half is plugged. Intel inks licensing agreement with Plessey Semiconductors, gets into the sensor game Posted: 10 Jan 2012 09:35 AM PST Intel signed a licensing agreement with Plessey Semiconductors today, giving it access to the UK chipmaker's array of sensors. Founded in 1957, Plessey produces cell phone radios, motion sensors and a host of other chips. The company also licensed its wireless LAN chipset to Apple back in 1994 and, in 1992, became the first licensee of ARM's architecture. Under the deal, Intel will receive the option to buy a financial security in Plessey at a later date, while Plessey, in turn, will be able to support a limited number of Intel's digital tuner products. It remains to be seen what Intel has in store with its new sensor licenses, but we're certainly looking forward to it. Intel and Plessey Sign Licensing and Warrant Agreements Plymouth, ENGLAND – 10 January 2012 – Plessey Semiconductors announced today that it has agreed to a product licensing agreement with Intel Corporation and a share warrant agreement with Intel Capital. Under the terms of the licensing agreement, Plessey will be licensed to manufacture, sell and support a select number of products in Intel's digital tuner portfolio. The Echo Nest teams with Twitter to integrate tweets into music apps Posted: 10 Jan 2012 09:00 AM PST The Echo Nest, better known as the creature behind the Spotify Radio curtain, is teaming up with Twitter for a pilot program to integrate tweets into music apps of all ages and descriptions. The company has applied its artist extraction technology to Twitter's Verified Accounts in order to identify artists whose Twitter handles are now part of its Rosetta Stone service. The tie-up allows developers to include artists' Verified Account handles and tweets within music apps; for example, app developer can include tweets from a currently-playing artist alongside music, lyrics, blog posts, photos and other media. No word on what apps will be tucking the functionality into their next update, but you can dig for details in the PR after the break. The Echo Nest Teams with Twitter in Pilot Program to Integrate Tweets Into Music Apps SOMERVILLE, MA, January, 10, 2012 - The Echo Nest, a music intelligence platform powering smarter apps across the web and devices, teamed up with Twitter to help developers include Tweets from thousands of the most popular recording artists directly within their apps. Twitter's growing list of Verified Accounts includes many of the world's top music artists. The Echo Nest applied its artist extraction technology to Twitter's Verified Accounts to identify artists whose Twitter handles are now part of The Echo Nest's Rosetta Stone service. Rosetta Stone helps music services "speak the same language" on a data level by translating unique identifiers across various services. This partnership means app developers can include artists' Verified Account handles and Tweets within music apps. Integrating Twitter handles into Rosetta Stone allows developers to add thousands of Verified Accounts with a few lines of code. Twitter's integration with The Echo Nest has extensive real-world applications. For example, an app developer will be able to include Tweets from a currently-playing artist alongside music, lyrics, blog posts, photos, and other media from Rosetta Stone-compatible services. "Twitter is arguably the most important and immediate artist-to-fan communication medium in the world. Until now, there was no simple way for developers to integrate musicians' tweets directly into their applications," said Jim Lucchese, CEO of The Echo Nest. "By making it easy for our community of over 10,000 application developers to integrate artists' tweets into their apps through our API, The Echo Nest hopes to enhance their music apps by extending Twitter to this new terrain while bringing fans closer to the artists they love." "The Echo Nest's cutting-edge music data platform will enable thousands of developers to build new ways for music fans and artists to connect on Twitter," said Glenn Otis Brown, Twitter director of media business development. "The sky's the limit on the creative Twitter music applications that the Echo Nest's developers can now build." This move increases the breadth of The Echo Nest's growing Rosetta Stone platform; and will help forge stronger connections between artists and their fans on a variety of platforms. |
