MakerBot goes big with Replicator 3D printer Posted: 09 Jan 2012 11:12 AM PST MakerBot just took the wraps off the Replicator, a new 3D printer that solves one of the technology's biggest problems at the moment -- printing large. Of course, you still can't, say, print yourself up a car just yet, but the Replicator does, at the very least, take a baby step in that direction. It also offers up the company's Dualstrusion technology, making it possible to print in two colors. The Replicator can take either ABS (the plastic found in Lego) or biodegradable PLA plastic. The Replicator will run $1,999 for the dual extruder or $1,749 for a single.

Dish Network announces Hopper DVR system, Joey set-top box, launches broadband, Test Drive services Posted: 09 Jan 2012 11:09 AM PST Dish Network just made a slew of big announcements at its CES press conference today, introducing the Hopper HD DVR system, the corollary Joey set-top box, and a new, TV Everywhere-based Test Drive service. Let's start with the hardware: the Hopper unit is comprised of three satellite TV tuners, a 2TB hard drive that promises up to 2,000 hours of entertainment, including up to 250 hours of HD viewing and 1,000 hours of SD recording. The device can record up to six TV shows at once, and allows users to watch as many as four recorded shows in four different rooms. When combined with the Joey, users can take advantage of a 750MHz Broadcom processor that, according to Dish, is the fastest satellite receiver on the market. Also announced today is something known as Test Drive -- a new "try before they buy" service that allows customers to get a free taste of TV Everywhere for 24 hours. As of February 1st, users will be able to sign up for Test Drive and stream select TV shows to their PCs, tablets or smartphones at no charge (for a limited time, of course). Also in February, the company will launch a new satellite broadband package, as part of a new service launched with ViaSat. These new packages will offer download speeds of up to 12Mbps, and upload rates of up to 3Mbps. Installation prices will start at $99, with bundles starting at around $80 per month. The Hopper HD DVR and accompanying small Joey set-top boxes create a whole-home HD DVR entertainment system that lets DISH customers easily record, pause, and play back shows from any room in the home. While most whole-home DVRs do not have the same DVR functionality on every TV, the Hopper and Joey whole-home system offers the same DVR functionality on every TV, letting customers pause, play and rewind both live and recorded HD programs in up to four rooms. The Hopper was unveiled by DISH CEO Joe Clayton at the 2012 International CES in Las Vegas today, and it is already winning honors as a CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Award honoree. Pricing and packaging will be announced later this quarter. The main Hopper unit features: Three satellite TV tuners A two-terabyte hard drive for up to 2,000 hours of video entertainment Up to 250 hours of HD or up to 1,000 hours of SD user recordings Bluetooth for linking to devices such as wireless headphones Picture-in-picture for watching any two channels simultaneously Combined with a Joey, the Hopper whole-home HD DVR system offers more advanced features: 750 MHz Broadcom processer – the fastest satellite receiver processor available today for a quick, responsive on-screen guide Approximately 50 percent more energy efficient for a four-room installation than previous models ZigBee RF4CE using a proprietary protocol remote with "remote control finder" alert High definition user interface Easy-to-use, fast, graphical, tile-based user interface with predictive search Small, sleek chassis for convenient placement "Building on a heritage of award-winning DVRs, DISH is proud to be the first to introduce a groundbreaking product that delivers the most choices for TV entertainment by integrating multiple sources of video into one set-top box," said DISH Network CEO Joe Clayton. "The Hopper gives our customers network TV shows on demand and thousands of family movie choices streaming or delivered to the hard drive. With its massive storage, the Hopper leads the industry in delivering the most entertainment options, bar none, for every member of the household." The Hopper – Endless Entertainment Options The Hopper's new, unparalleled feature, PrimeTime Anytime™ allows customers, with one click, to record using a single tuner all of the primetime TV programming from ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC – the networks that deliver the most popular shows during primetime. Once activated by a customer, PrimeTime Anytime records network programming in high definition, where available, every night and stores them for eight days after they have aired. This creates an on-demand library of approximately 100 hours of primetime TV shows, and makes it easy to catch up on episodes from last night and last week's airing. The Hopper can record up to six TV shows at once (two live programs and four PrimeTime Anytime shows) while allowing viewers to watch up to four different recorded or on-demand shows in four rooms of the house, simultaneously. This gives a family a variety of options to control or view their recordings and to watch shows in any room from a single Hopper. The Hopper's on-demand capabilities give access to DISH's Blockbuster @Home™ for $10 per month which is now enhanced with more than 10,000 total titles streaming to the TV. The Hopper also offers on-demand content for customers with limited or no Internet access with a feature called DISH Unplugged. This feature delivers via satellite hundreds of the most popular movies and TV shows to the hard drive, including transactional and authenticated videos on demand. DISH Unplugged provides a high quality picture without buffering and makes available many of the same streaming movie choices offered by Blockbuster @Home, including premium movie access. And for subscribers of DISH's America's Top 120 programming package or greater, the Hopper provides whole-home music distribution from 73 SiriusXM channels, including album art and a unique collapsible list of music channels located at the top of the channel guide at Channel 99, making it faster and easier for SiriusXM music fans to find their favorite music. Additionally, the Hopper will features TV apps that give viewers real time access to Facebook, Twitter, Pandora and photo sharing, as well as games, news, weather, sports, and stock quotes. TV Everywhere Customers can manage the Hopper via the Internet at www.DishOnline.com or the DISH Remote Access app, providing the ability to control DVR recordings on their tablets, smartphones and computers. Connecting the Hopper with DISH's Sling® Adapter provides customers the ability to watch and control all live TV channels, PrimeTime Anytime programs and the DVR on their computer, tablet or smartphone wherever they go. The Hopper and Joey are designed and engineered by EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ: SATS). The Hopper works by distributing HD signals through existing co-axial cable in the home using the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) specification. The Hopper is powered by a Broadcom 750 MHz processor, the most powerful satellite TV processor available today delivering a fast and responsive on-screen guide and a graphical user interface that features channel logos to help search channels, movies or TV shows quickly. The advanced search platform also allows for navigation of programs across satellite TV, broadband and an optional external hard drive. For more information about the award-winning Hopper and Joey by DISH, including technical specifications, please visit www.dish.com/hopper. To watch live TV on the iPad, subscribers need a Sling Adapter from DISH and a broadband-connected compatible DISH HD DVR receiver. Acoustic Research unleashes pair of audio docks in AirPlay and Bluetooth flavors Posted: 09 Jan 2012 11:00 AM PST Voxx International (formerly known as Audiovox) has a habit of making a splash at CES, and this year has been no different. Today, the company's Acoustic Research subsidiary announced a pair of audio docks: the AirPlay Audio System (ARAP50) and the Bluetooth Wireless Audio System (ARS70). With the former, users will be able to wirelessly stream playlists from their iDevices simply by plugging the system into any old 12-volt outlet and linking it up to a wireless network. The Bluetooth variety, meanwhile, offers essentially the same capabilities for the rest of the smartphone universe, including owners of Bluetooth-equipped Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices. Details on specs remain frustratingly vague, but we'll probably find out more this Spring, when both systems are slated to hit the market. The AirPlay Audio System will retail for $200, while the Bluetooth Wireless Audio System will cost you $130. Head past the break to get the full PR treatment. The Maxx packs 32GB of storage and will run you a cool $300 plus the requisite two-year contract.

Fujifilm confirms X-Pro1 at CES: 16MP APS-C sensor, interchangeable lenses, price TBA Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:55 AM PST Amazon all but confirmed the camera's existence when it leaked three lens pages yesterday, but Fujifilm just officially unveiled the X-Pro1 at CES, in all its rangefinder-esque goodness. The camera's centerpiece is an APS-C sensor, but unlike the X100 and X10, Fujifilm's new flagship includes an interchangeable lens mount. The camera can capture 16 megapixel stills, and will be compatible with three lenses at launch: an XF 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2.0, 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4 lens and a larger 60mm (91mm equivalent) f/2.4 macro lens, though the company says it plans to introduce nine more lenses within the next three years. Pricing hasn't been announced for the camera or lenses, though yesterday's Amazon link listed pricing at $500 for the first two lenses, and $600 for the 60mm macro. The camera itself will ship in late February, so you won't need to wait long to get your hands on the first Fujifilm X-series ILC. Jump past the break for the full PR, and keep an eye out for our hands-on later this week. FUJIFILM INTRODUCES THE REVOLUTIONARY X-PRO1 INTERCHANGEABLE LENS DIGITAL CAMERA SYSTEM Featuring the New X-Trans CMOS sensorTM, FUJIFILM original X-Mount and New Hybrid Multi Viewfinder, the X-Pro1 Delivers Outstanding Image Quality that Rivals Current DSLR Cameras Valhalla, N.Y., January 9, 2012 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation proudly introduces the debut of its newest and most advanced addition to its premium, high quality X-Series digital camera line-up – the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 interchangeable lens digital camera system. With a brand new, custom developed 16MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensorTM, incorporating a newly developed filter array and Fujifilm's proprietary EXR Processor technology, the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 is poised to deliver superlative image quality that will rival currently available mid and high-end DSLR models. Taking another decisive step into the premium camera market, Fujifilm has taken the X-Pro1 to the next level featuring a New 2nd Generation Hybrid Multi Viewfinder and three prime interchangeable FUJINON lenses. The FUJIFILM X-Pro1 digital camera not only promises to carve out a distinct position in the premium camera category, but it also promises to reward X-Series loyalists with a camera system that surpasses their expectations. "Fujifilm puts great emphasis on producing outstanding image quality, and with the X-Pro1, we are proud to offer an interchangeable lens system that performs to the highest professional caliber," said Go Miyazaki, division president, Imaging and Electronic Imaging Divisions, FUJIFILM North America Corporation. "Each element is the product of Fujfiilm's commitment to uncompromising quality. With its custom APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensorTM, unique Hybrid Multi Viewfinder and three interchangeable lenses, the X-Pro1 is poised to become the new standard for photographers." Setting new standards in image resolution Fujifilm has developed a new CMOS sensor called the X-Trans CMOSTM. The X-Trans CMOSTM sensor is capable of delivering resolution that is superior to other APS-C sensors and equal to even some full frame sensors. The new color filter array paves the way for an ideal sensor that does not need an optical low-pass filter. While the optical low-pass filter is indispensable for the reduction of moiré and false color generated by conventional sensors, it also degrades resolution. Fujifilm has developed a new color filter array that is inspired by the random arrangement of fine film grain, removing the need for an optical low-pass filter to solve moiré and false color issues. In the array, RGB pixels are arranged in 6x6 pixel sets with high aperiodicity (randomness). Increasing the degree of randomness eliminates the fundamental cause of moiré and false colors – a problem that occurs in conventional arrays when shooting stripes and other repeating patterns. The presence of an R, G and B pixel in every vertical and horizontal pixel series minimizes the generation of false colors and delivers higher color reproduction. As a result of using a film-inspired array, a more powerful processor is required to process the image signal data. So Fujifilm has developed the EXR Processor Pro. This technology will maximize the full potential of the X-Trans CMOSTM sensor, delivering high speed and high precision image processing. Prime FUJINON XF lenses deliver the highest image quality FUJINON lenses have long been associated with delivering high quality images, with optics used for both broadcast TV and medium format cameras. Now the expertise borne out of this enviable optical heritage has been put into lenses for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1. Three compact XF FUJINON fast aperture prime lenses will be available at launch. The "XF18mmF2 R" (27mm equivalent) f/2.0, "XF 35mmF1.4 R" (53mm equivalent) f/1.4, and "XF60mmF2.4 R Macro" (90mm equivalent) F/2.4 are all bright and compact and designed to deliver sharp, clear images of uncompromising quality. They offer precise control over depth-of-field and deliver excellent bokeh effects thanks to the design of the molded aperture diaphragm blades. The blades are curved to create a circular image at all aperture settings, while the very edges of each blade are meticulously rounded off rather than simply cut off, which delivers a sharper image. In addition, the solid feel of the high-quality metal barrel and detailed exposure setting in 1/3 step increments using the aperture ring fuel your desire to capture more photos with every shot. FUJIFILM original "X-Mount" maximizes lens performance Specifically designed to maximize the mirrorless design of the body the X-Mount has a short flange back distance of just 17.7mm. This means the rear lens elements are as close as possible to the sensor. The wide opening allows the lens to be mounted deeper within the body – up to 7.5mm (approximately) from the mount surface – reducing the back focus distance of each lens to the minimum possible, thus achieving high resolution all the way to the edge of the image Hybrid Multi Viewfinder – seeing is believing First introduced in the FUJIFILM X100 digital camera, Fujifilm's revolutionary Hybrid Viewfinder has the ability to instantly switch between an Optical Viewfinder and Electronic Viewfinder. The Hybrid Viewfinder has added a new dimension to the pleasure of composing photographs. For the brightest viewing image, and to keep shutter lag to a minimum, users should choose the Optical Viewfinder. Those wanting focus confirmation, exposure information, white balance information and depth of field indicators should switch to the Electronic Viewfinder. The Electronic Viewfinder provides an excellent "Live View" of your composition. This fusion of technologies allows users to enjoy composing their images through a bright viewfinder, but has the option to overlay vital picture taking information should this be required. Changing between the two viewfinders is simple, thanks to the switch on the front of the X-Pro1 body. When attaching a FUJINON XF-series lens on the X-Pro1, both the viewfinder magnification and bright frame size automatically switch to support the lens focal length. Viewfinder magnification switches to 0.37x for the 18mm lens, and to 0.60x when the 35mm or 60mm lens is mounted, letting you compose your shot with the bright, crystal clarity of an optical image. The X-Pro1 also gives you the freedom to manually set a focal distance and switch between viewfinder magnifications. Cutting edge technology in a beautiful camera body The X-Pro1's magnesium alloy chassis and improved user interface is a testament to Fujifilm's unyielding attention to quality and the photographic needs of the professionals. From the exact and deliberate placement of the buttons to the precision milled dials, the X-Pro1 beautifully encompasses all that is needed to deliver high quality photography. The top and base are made from die-cast aluminum alloy which, combined with high quality touches like precise engraving on the top-plate and hand-enameled lettering on the lenses, illustrates how the entire X-Pro1 system was designed and built without compromise. This eye for detail extends to the shutter speed dial and exposure compensation control that is precision milled from solid metal. Details like the shutter speed dial lock mechanism and the recessed exposure compensation dial are designed to prevent accidental movement of settings. The knurled finish on the sides of the dials feature rows of minutely milled squared pyramids for superb grip and confidence. As a well-known mark of quality, the "Made in Japan" printing confirms that every part of the construction has had to meet Fujifilm's highest standards. The lightweight, precision-milled lens hood (included with the lens) has been exclusively designed and machined from aluminum for the FUJINON XF lens. Its compact size delivers superb light shading performance in a design that perfectly matches X-Pro1 styling. Diameters of the aperture ring and focus ring of the three FUJINON XF-series interchangeable lenses are only slightly larger than the barrel for sleek uniformity of design. Precision machined from metal, the reassuring click of the aperture ring at each setting and the comfortable torque resistance when operating the focus ring enhances the shooting experience. The X-Pro1's leather-like finish is designed for a quality look and durability. The synthetic leather offers resistance to the elements and high durability, while an original manufacturing process produces a texture with the look and feel of authentic leather. The X-Pro1 has also been designed with the photographer's comfort in mind. The natural fit of the eyepiece provides excellent shielding from light leakage, and an optional dioptic adjustment lens can also be attached. Extending Fujifilm's photo film legacy In film cameras, capturing multiple exposures is the unique photographic technique of superimposing one image on another by double exposing a single frame of film. Through advanced digital processing the X-Pro1 can simulate this technique by simply selecting the Multiple Exposure mode and taking the first shot. By viewing the image via the Hybrid Multi Viewfinder or on the LCD screen, you can see how the finished multiple exposure will look and then precisely frame the second shot. Further enhancements have been made to the Film Simulation modes with the new Professional Color Negative Film Modes (Pro Neg. Std and Pro Neg. Hi) designed for X-Pro1 users working in the studio. The X-Pro1 also offers Film Simulation bracketing, along with AE, Dynamic and ISO bracketing; plus the ability to capture the colors and tonal qualities of popular FUJIFILM emulsions through the vibrant colors of Velvia, the softer skin tones of ASTIA and the natural look of PROVIA. Replicating the effects of monochrome film photography the X-Pro1 lets you use color filters to expand your photographic interpretation. Heighten contrast with the yellow filter and red filter, or brighten greens and deepen reds with the green filter. Just as professional film photographers once selected a filter and printing paper to complement their creative vision, you can easily fine tune image quality with these filters. For those after a more nostalgic theme there is also a sepia filter. Premium Accessory Lineup The FinePix X-Pro1 has these additional premium accessory options that are sold separately: Hand Grip, HG-XPro1 - Giving you more secure and balanced handling of the camera, the X-Pro1 accessory grip smoothly molds to the lines of the camera body for a uniform look. The grip helps balance the weight of the camera body, allowing for a more comfortable hold. Shoe Mount Flash EF-X20 – Designed to match X-Pro1's distinctive styling, a single dial lets you choose between two modes: AUTO - automatically optimizes flash for both outdoor daylight and dark indoor shots; and MANUAL - for hands-on control. In addition, the built-in flash diffuser has an easy one-touch process to soften harsh flash effects. Leather Case LC-XPro1* - Beautifully molded to protect the X-Pro1, this leather case is designed to allow fast access for easy shooting. Attention has been given to every detail, from the color and spacing of the stitches to the use of a hidden magnet rather than a snap for closing the case. The premium case is complete with the authentic leather neck-strap and hood case. Protector Filter 39mm and Protector Filter 52mm – These protection filters have high transmissivity without affecting the visible light, and the Super EBC coating effectively controls harmful borrowed light. The frame of the filters has a semi gloss black finish, keeping with the high sense of design, while the inner filter ring is finished in a matte black in order to minimize reflections. Pricing and Availability The FUJIFILM X-Pro1 will be available in February 2012, and the price will be announced in late January 2012. |
Verizon Galaxy Tab 7.7 with LTE hands-on at CES 2012 (video) Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:45 AM PST Well, what do we have here? Yes, it's the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 with LTE for Verizon and it's just officially landed in the US. We're not terribly surprised, but we're not complaining, either. This 7.9mm (0.31 inches) thin tablet packs a 7.7-inch 1280x800 Super AMOLED Plus (non-pentile) high-definition display, Android 3.2 (Honeycomb), an unnamed 1.4GHz dual core processor (likely the same Exynos CPU as its HSPA+ cousin), 1GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in storage, up to 32GB of microSD-based storage, an infrared transmitter, a three megapixel AF camera with flash and a two-megapixel front-facing camera. Of course, you'll also find TouchWiz on board, along with Samsung's media and social hubs, plus Peel Smart Remote, Wi-Fi Direct and AllShare (DLNA) -- at 340g (12oz), it's pretty lightweight, too. Connectivity is provided via Verizon' LTE and CDMA networks as well as support for WiFi a/b/g/n. A few optional accessories will be offered for the device, including a keyboard dock, a multimedia dock, a USB/SD adapter connection kit, an HDTV adapter and a book cover case. We did have the opportunity to play with Verizon's Galaxy Tab 7.7 and the most striking feature is definitely the screen -- it's simply phenomenal, with incredible viewing angles and amazing contrast. The brushed-metal back cover further contributes to the premium feel of the device. Oh, and did we mention it's super thin? It's interesting to note that like most of Verizon's recent LTE phones, this tablet uses a micro-SIM instead of a standard-sized card. As for performance, it's top-notch with a fluid experience all around. Sadly, pricing and availability remain a mystery for now. We'll keep you posted, but in the meantime take a look at the galleries below and be sure to peek after the break for our hands-on video and the press materials. Richard Lai contributed to this post. Samsung N Service unveiled at CES: Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Comcast and Verizon onboard Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:31 AM PST Well, what have we here? Looks as if Samsung's cooking up quite the content partnership here at CES 2012, with Verizon, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and Comcast (at least) onboard. From a content creation standpoint, NBC Universal is evidently signed on to crack open its coffers and let the material pour fourth, and we're guessing we'll hear of quite a few more once the announcement gets official. As of now, the so-called N Service looks to be one that'll enable select pay-TV subscribers to stream content onto Samsung devices -- hopefully whilst far, far away from home. At least for FiOS TV users, those who take advantage of N Service will be able to "access live streaming FiOS TV channels, as well as Flex View commercial movies and TV shows from one's Samsung Smart TV or Blu-ray player." It'll obviously work with multi-room households, too. Have a peek at the detail shots below, and keep it locked right here as we learn more. |

Audiovox Android headrest pairs DVD player with app delights Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:15 AM PST Yes, more Android-powered accessories. This time it's a headrest from Audiovox, which connects through WiFi networks and provide in-car time-killing for passengers in the back. It'll generally require you to tether to your smartphone for the privilege -- unless you like idling outside your home or office. But once you're connected, expect to get the requisite social networking, web browsing and app joy of the Google OS. Alongside the DVD (not Blu-ray) player, there's also an SD slot, HDMI and USB port, although the company's keeping schtum on exactly which version of the OS it'll arrive with. Anyone who needs more Android in their life can peruse the press release below. Audiovox Brings Android to Rear Seat Entertainment Award winning headrest line delivers full function Android technology to the rear seat of the vehicle LAS VEGAS, NV – January 9, 2012 – International CES, Center Hall, Booth 10404-10415 – Audiovox Electronics Corporation (AEC), the recognized market leader in overhead and replacement headrests, announced today that they will produce a custom headrest system that brings full function Android technology through local hotspot Wi-Fi connection to their custom headrest, rear seat entertainment (RSE) product line. "Consumer behavior is changing. People have their whole lives on a single device that they use for music, videos and sharing content and they don't want to give that up just because they are in their cars," said Tom Malone, President, Audiovox Electronic Corporation. "Our new Android based headrest system lets the rear seat passenger stay connected. Simply tap into a Wi-Fi hotspot wirelessly through your Smartphone or other Wi-Fi enabled devices, and your backseat passengers can immediately enjoy all Android technology has to offer...like surfing the web or social networking, playing music videos, and even streaming movies." This new RSE system will start shipping in Q3, 2012 under the Audiovox and Advent brands, and will include the following enhancements and step-up features that take the in-vehicle connectivity to a new level. Upgradeable Android operating system with a Dual-core processor and Wi-Fi capabilities (external hotspot necessary) and multiple usage configurations that provide the rear seat passengers with the ability to have Android access on both monitors with or without DVD. This system also comes with Hi-Def Digital LCD monitors with crisp LED backlighting, USB, SD and HDMI connection ports. The system is Bluetooth enabled, comes with a wireless remote control, and is available in over 1,000 OE style vehicle applications. All headrest systems comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. "It used to be that content was king...now content delivery rules the pack. We are beyond physical DVD and Blu-Ray media. Consumers now want applications to stream and/or download audio, video, games, news, sports, and social media," stated Malone. "Android tablets make up 22% of all the tablets shipped and Android Smartphones dominate the field with a 55% share. We chose Android since it is an open system to work with, unlike closed systems that require extensive certification and licensing agreements that create development delays and increased product costs. The only way to stay a market leader is to continually deliver innovation in technology and design. These systems do just that." |

Naturally, it runs on Verizon's LTE network, and has an 8 megapixel camera capable of 1080p video. RIM outs BB 7.1 OS, rollout begins hitting handsets worldwide today Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:06 AM PST Were you holding out hope that RIM would finally get its act together, rejoin the wireless race and push BBX BlackBerry 10 out to market early this year? It's probably best to stop holding your breath since we already know that major OS update won't come until much later in 2012. Shoring up the gap, however, is a just announced bump to the company's latest software: BB 7.1 OS. So, what's on deck for this stopgap refresh? For starters, the Canadian company's updated apps like BBM, BlackBerry Traffic and BlackBerry Travel, in addition to mobile hotspot, universal search and BlackBerry Tag (an implementation of NFC), WiFi calling, FM radio and BlackBerry Maps. The rollout will begin hitting phones worldwide today, so if you're packing a BlackBerry, expect to see the new firmware over the next few weeks. Hit up the source link below to get a more detailed look at the goods. |

iOS 5.1 beta 3 appears on developer iPhone, available only OTA? (update: live on ADC) Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:02 AM PST It's been a while since the last beta, but per a screenshot sent in by a tipster, Apple's already begun pushing iOS 5.1 beta 3 to development iOS devices. The 77.4MB update curiously isn't live on Apple's developer website just yet (see update), but when it lands we'll hopefully gleam more than "bug fixes and improvements." Update: Per MacRumors, the build in question is 9B5141a and restores the 3G toggle absent on the iPhone 4S. Update 2: It's live on the developer portal. [Thanks, Justin] |
Pantech Element gets official AT&T nod, arrives later this month Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST Well, we saw this coming and now it's gone all official. Pantech's premier Android tablet will be arriving on AT&T and, more importantly, it's coming January 22nd, matching the specs from our leak earlier. A refresher? Well, there's a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 16GB of storage, with room for expansion through microSD. The eight-inch slate will arrive on Gingerbread 3.2, although there's no news yet on an Ice Cream Sandwich update. Price-wise, expect the Element to set you back $300 on a two-year contract or $450 off-contract. Check it out in action in the video after the break. |
Pantech Burst official on AT&T with LTE, available January 22nd for $50 Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST Pantech's already made a move to dominate the lower end of Verizon's LTE lineup, and if AT&T's recent announcement was any indication, it's about to do the same on the largest GSM carrier as well. The Burst is AT&T's answer to the Breakout in terms of pricing, but the laundry lists of the two phones actually have a few gaping differences: the former employs the use of a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 4-inch Super AMOLED 800 x 480 display, 5MP camera with LED flash and 720p HD vid capture, 2MP front-facing cam, 16GB of internal storage space and microSD slot with a capacity of up to 32GB and a 1,650mAh battery. The Gingerbread-running Burst will be available in either black or red on January 22nd and can be yours for $50 with a two-year commitment. Considering Pantech's other offering for the same price, we can't say it will be a terribly difficult decision if you're looking for a budget phone on the lineup. We'll have our hands-on soon, so stay tuned. |
Shocker! ASUS to launch Padfone at Mobile World Congress, we'll be there! (Update: hands-on video) Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:57 AM PST Strictly speaking, CES doesn't even start until tomorrow, but ASUS has just handed us an invitation to its Padfone event at Mobile World Congress next month. If all goes well, this will fit nicely within the expected early-2012 window that Jonney personally promised. Obviously we'll be in Barcelona to cover the launch, so stay tuned, dear tablet freaks. Update: We just got our hands on a working engineering unit of the Padfone. Eagle-eyed reader might notice the odd tweaks here and there on the outside, and we also spotted three new mysterious contact pins along the USB and HDMI side of the phone. The product manager was away so we couldn't get an answer for what the pins are for, but we'd imagine they're for an external antenna. After the break you'll see a demo video of the Padfone switching screens as it slides into the tablet -- we've been told the final product will be able to switch even faster, so here's hoping ASUS can keep its promise. First up is the EV series of 3D HDTVs that sport a "virtually edgeless picture" thanks to a super thin bezel, and come in both 65- and 55-inch versions. The EV Series also packs 2D to 3D conversion tech, Yahoo Connected TV and the company's new Smart Home UI to access all of your media content, plus a double-sided QWERTY remote to navigate it. Next is the 23-inch Designer Series sports an edge-lit 1920 x 1080 LED screen that comes in your choice of black, white, metallic grey or red to fit your every mood (and room color). Price has yet to be determined, but you'll be able to get a Designer TV of your own in Q2 of this year. Lastly, Haier is unveiling several new audio products. First, there's the $400 3D model that has an iPhone dock built in and delivers 230 watts of 5.1 surround sound using Absolute 3D technology. Next is a super slim profile soundbar that pumps out 280 watts of sound through 2.1 channels through a speaker that's only 1.07 inches deep for $350. Rounding things out is a ViewHD iDevice dock that works with iPads, iPhones and iPods. Priced at $99, it comes with a remote for controlling it from afar and has HDMI out in case mobile's screen simply won't do. All you Haier-philes can dig deep into the details of all of these in the PR below. Haier Designer Series LED Televisions Haier, the Official HDTV of the NBA, introduces the Designer Series which offers unmatched style in a compact package that includes many of the best features of our larger TVs, like a 1080p Full HD display and Auto Volume Leveler. This sleek, sophisticated model comes in black, white, red or a modern metallic grey finish to match any décor. The side fins can be removed to mount the unit on a wall. With an Edge-lit LED display, ultra slim profile, and 23" screen, this television adds a chic touch to smaller spaces like a kitchen, bedroom, office, or dorm room. Another great function is the ability to connect to your laptop or desktop computer and use it as a monitor. "The unique, sleek and compact cabinet offers space-saving solutions that fit comfortably, yet stylishly, into smaller areas," said Douglas Lane, president of the Digital Products Group for Haier America. "Add in the value of multiple inputs, and consumers can hook the television up to gaming consoles, Blu-ray or DVD players, video cameras, computers and more to get the best entertainment possible." Edge-lit LED Edge-lit backlight technology in Haier LED HDTVs delivers enhanced contrast and color in an ultra-thin design, with lower energy consumption. 1080p Full HD 1080p delivers the highest quality picture possible from a high definition source. 1080p high definition televisions accept a 1080p signal to display a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The Smart UI also features intuitive navigation with the double-sided QWERTY remote control; one side of the remote allows access to key TV functions, the other side has an intuitive keypad for easy access to different content available and allows you to communicate instantly with friends. 3D Passive polarization displays two images on the screen simultaneously, but with each image having a different polarization. Polarizing glasses consist of two polarizing films that allow light of different polarizations though. Due to the differing polarizations of the incoming light, one eyepiece allows one image through while the other eyepiece allows the other image through. AT&T Galaxy Note with LTE hands-on at CES 2012 (video) Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:46 AM PST It's official! As expected, everyone's favorite giant superphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note, is finally making its way to the US -- and with a dash of LTE, no less. The mini tablet will be available on AT&T in both carbon blue and ceramic white for an undisclosed price sometime in the near future. Specs are almost identical to its global sibling -- 5.3-inch 1280x800 HD Super AMOLED display, S Pen, Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread), 1GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, up to 32GB of additional storage via microSD card, 2,500mAh battery, eight-megapixel 1080p AF camera with flash and two-megapixel front-facing camera. Like its stablemate, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, AT&T's Galaxy Note receives a brain transplant with a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU (presumably a Qualcomm Snapdragon S3) replacing the 1.4GHz dual-core Exynos processor. Beyond support for AT&T's speedy LTE network, the device includes UMTS/HSPA+ (21Mbps) and GSM/EDGE world radios. This US variant will also be available with a number of accessories, including a desktop dock, a spare battery charging system, flip cover cases (available in multiple colors) and the Galaxy Note S Pen holder kit. We took AT&T's Galaxy Note for a spin, and it's a dead-ringer for the global model in terms of size, weight and general layout. The most obvious differences are the carrier logo just below the earpiece, and the four capacitive keys replacing the three-button layout (physical key flanked by capacitive buttons) common to non-US Galaxy handsets. Pop the battery cover and you'll notice subtler changes, with the plastic SIM and microSD card holders being replaced by thinner metallic ones in order to accommodate the additional thickness from (presumably) an LTE antenna mounted inside the battery door with matching contacts on the phone's chassis. Another difference is with the S Pen, which now features a contrasting grey side-button instead of the same black color as the pen's body. While the key is still just as difficult to locate by touch, it's now trivial to find at a glance. Performance wise, during our brief time with it, this version of the Note felt just as snappy as its predecessor, despite the aforementioned chipset swap. Unlike the other Galaxy S II-class devices on AT&T, there's no sign of NFC here. We'll keep you posted as we learn more, but until then check out the galleries below and hit the break for our hands-on video and the mandatory PR. Richard Lai contributed to this post. Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:46 AM PST AT&T and Sony Ericsson haven't exactly had the best of luck as Android partners -- we submit the Xperia Play 4G and the Xperia X10 as exhibits A and B -- but it appears that the two companies are blowing on the dice in Vegas and hoping that luck will change with their latest flagship. AT&T and Sony (that's right, not a hint of Ericsson in sight) took to the stage to announce the Xperia ion. It's packing some good specs, too: a 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 HD Reality display, a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, LTE, 16GB flash storage and a 12MP Exmor-R rear camera offering 1080p video capture that's paired up with a 1.3MP front-facing cam that offers 720p HD video. It'll also be Playstation-Certified, much like the Xperia Play before it. The ion's gearing up for a Q2 release, but we were disappointed to learn that it's going to launch with Gingerbread installed, especially given the fact that Sony's been very forthcoming about upgrading its Xperia lineup to ICS by the end of the first quarter. We suspect the delay will be at least in part due to additional carrier testing. Granted, it's a long time away and things are subject to change. No pricing has yet been announced, but it's quite likely we'll see the feature-laden smartphone starting out around $250, if not more. We should have a hands-on shortly. Xperia ion revealed – first LTE smartphone from Sony available exclusively from AT&T • HD powerhouse – two HD cameras, 4.6-inch1 HD screen and HDMI-out support • Unmatched Android camera experience in the US with 12 megapixel rear camera • Effortless sharing of content with easy connectivity across multiple screens within the world of Sony • PlayStation™ Certified and access to entertainment services from Sony Entertainment Network January 9, 2012, Las Vegas, Nev. – Xperia™ ion, the first LTE smartphone from Sony®*, was introduced today at the 2012 International CES and will be available exclusively in the U.S. from AT&T in the second quarter. Xperia ion from Sony enables easy connectivity with multiple screens for consumers looking to share and enjoy content on whichever screen they choose, whether it's TV, smartphone, laptop or tablet. Xperia ion from Sony has a stunning 4.6-inch HD display (1280 X 720 pixels) that provides a visual brilliance for superior viewing experiences. For photo enthusiasts, Xperia ion features a new Fast Capture innovation to make sure life's unexpected moments are not missed: the HD camera goes from standby mode to first shot in 1.5 seconds.1 The impressive images taken with the 12-megapixel rear camera are unmatched by any other Android smartphone. Additionally, both rear- and front-facing cameras deliver HD recording capabilities. "With Xperia ion, we're bringing together several firsts that will take users beyond the smartphone," said Paul Hamnett, President, Sony Ericsson North America. "Designed to deliver a seamless experience across the multiple screens we use to play, watch, listen, and share, Xperia ion is the gateway to entertainment when and – most importantly – where you want it." Xperia ion users will be able to access the richest entertainment experiences from Sony Entertainment Network. Music Unlimited offers a global catalogue of 15 million unique songs while Video Unlimited has the latest Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows from all major studios. Xperia ion is also PlayStation™ Certified, guaranteeing a high quality smartphone gaming experience. Canon PowerShot G1 X first hands-on (video) Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:43 AM PST The 3-inch 922k-dot LCD on the rear is very sharp and bright, with accurate color and a nifty articulating LCD that should be familiar to G-series users. Flip-out LCDs have come in handy for us many times in the past, and although they add a bit of bulk to the camera's width, they're absolutely a worthwhile addition. The user interface is identical to that on the G12, so there won't be any surprises there. Overall, the G1 X is a very powerful compact camera, and while we need to spend more time with a production model before evaluating image quality, battery life and general performance, it seems to be in line with what Canon has delivered in the past. The camera's nearly $800 price tag is likely to be its largest barrier to entry, and while the X may be a stellar choice as a pro backup, a DSLR or compact mirrorless ILC will offer more functionality for a much lower price. PS Vita coming to AT&T next month Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:26 AM PST The 3G PlayStation Vita is finally coming to the US in February, courtesy of AT&T. Sony's latest handheld gaming platform is being billed by the carrier as a product that is "going to change the gaming industry. Period." Those are mighty bold words but, as we already learned, it's a mighty bold device. You'll be able to sign up for one of two data plans directly from the device -- $15 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB. Of course, that's not terribly surprising since those are the standard contract-free data plans available from Ma-Bell. You'll be able get your 3G Vita fix starting February 22nd. PR is after the break. Update: In an interesting twist Ralph de la Vega said it'll be even better when it "gets LTE." Though, we've heard nothing official about a 4G vita -- so this is either an unintentional leak or a simple slip. AT&T Announces Wireless Data Plans for Playstation® Vita AT&T's Mobile Broadband Network to Power Sony Computer Entertainment's Next Generation Portable Entertainment System. PlayStation Vita Available in the United States February 22 Dallas, Texas, January 09, 2012 AT&T*, the exclusive U.S. wireless carrier for Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation®Vita, today announced data plan pricing for the 3G-enabled model of the next generation portable entertainment system. AT&T plans to offer two data plans, a $14.99 plan featuring 250MB and a $25 plan with 2GB. Both plans will be month-to-month and will not require a long-term contract. The high speeds and broad coverage of AT&T's mobile broadband network mean that PS Vita owners will remain connected to their content and with the world around them, including their friends and other PS Vita owners. PlayStation Vita customers with an AT&T data plan will also have free access at more than 29,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide. "The data plans for the PlayStation Vita will give gaming enthusiasts a convenient and seamless path to connect to a nationwide mobile broadband network while gaming on the go," said Glenn Lurie, president, emerging devices, AT&T. "We are looking forward to providing PlayStation Vita users the ability to experience a new era of portable gaming through wireless integration. This introduces an entirely new gaming experience, with access to popular social networking sites, right on the device." PS Vita will launch with a wide range of social networking features developed specifically for the system that provide unique, handheld entertainment experiences: Location-based application "near" will allow users to find out what other PS Vita owners in their vicinity are currently playing and what titles are most popular in the area. "near" also enables location-based gaming features such as "gifting," in which a user can access virtual game-related items that other users are sharing by checking in at geographic locations. For example, in the popular kart racing series ModNation Racers: Road Trip, PS Vita users will be able to collect rare gift items provided through the game when visiting specific points of interest in 45 major cities around the world. They can then share them with other PS Vita owners through the "near" application. "LiveArea™" is an interactive interface for each PS Vita software title in which users can access the latest information for games through PlayStation®Network. In addition, a variety of social networking and communications services such as Facebook, Flickr, foursquare, and Twitter will be available on PS Vita. "With a mobile broadband connection, gaming enthusiasts will have seamless access to LiveArea," added Lurie. "Users can check on their friends' accomplishments with LiveArea when they're playing the same game, triggering real-time communication." PS Vita systems with an active AT&T data plan will also take advantage of software functionality developed specifically for the 3G-enabled model that allow users to game at the speed of their mobile lifestyle, including turn-based, asynchronous multiplayer gameplay, instantly updated rankings and leaderboards, immediate access to the latest downloadable add-on content, and real-time community news. "PlayStation Vita will completely transform the way consumers game on the go, offering new ways to play games and interact with entertainment," said Phil Rosenberg, senior vice president of business development, SCEA, "With access to AT&T's mobile broadband network, PlayStation Vita owners will be able to stay connected with their friends and experience PS Vita's rich social gaming features virtually wherever they are." The PlayStation Vita 3G/Wi-Fi model will be available in the United States on February 22 for $299. AT&T data plans are priced separately and will be available on a month-to-month basis. Users can easily activate a data plan directly from their PS Vita system. In addition, once PlayStation Vita owners activate their 3G/Wi-Fi unit with one of AT&T's data plans, they will be eligible to choose one free download from a list of select games available on the PlayStation®Store. Hands-on with LG Viper, an LTE smartphone coming to Sprint Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:23 AM PST Here we are in the caverns of the Venetian Hotel, where LG was kind enough to give us a quick look at the Viper -- a pre-production LTE handset that's destined for Sprint. While the device shares a similar heritage to the Connect 4G on MetroPCS, no release date is yet determined. Still, LG seems intent to join Samsung in the Now Network's futuristic 4G spotlight. The device features a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, along with a 4-inch Nova Display and Android 2.3.7. The WVGA screen is bright, crisp and quite pleasing. While the display's coating was rather glossy, Nova Displays typically perform well in direct sunlight -- no way to test that claim today, however. A 5 megapixel camera with LED flash occupies the rear of the device, and for those moments of self-indulgence, there's also a VGA cam up front. Rounding out the media specs, LG tells us the phone will carry DLNA certification. We were also curious to learn that the Viper will be one of the more eco-friendly devices in Sprint's lineup. For example, the case is made entirely from recycled plastic and the charger is said to be quite energy efficient. With a glossy plastic front and a brushed metal rear, the Viper is a collision of design philosophies and appears a bit dated. This felt particularly true with respect to the sides of the device, which struck us as eerily reminiscent of a fourth-generation iPod. In fact, the Viper seems a bit chunky, but that's not to suggest it's unwelcome. To the contrary, the handset felt like absolute money in the palm of our hand. Because this little guy is a work in progress, we kept our interactions with the software to a minimum. Sprint ID was apparent from the outset, and while it's unclear whether Google Wallet will come standard, LG tells us that the Viper will fully support both it and NFC. We're told that Life's Good for 2012, and we have no doubt that the folks in Overland Park would agree. Brian Heater contributed to this report |

Intel partnering with Nuance to bring voice recognition to Ultrabooks Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:17 AM PST So far in the last hour, we've learned that future Ultrabooks will have NFC, possibly larger screens and touchscreens (maybe even touch-enabled palm rests). Well, we've got one more marquee feature to add to the list: Intel just announced that it's partnering with Nuance to bring voice recognition to Ultrabooks. And it sounds like Intel's vision is comprehensive: the company envisions consumers being able to launch applications, compose emails, update social networks and control media playback. During the keynote, Intel PC client head Mooly Eden even said he would one day like to speak to the computer and have this words appear in a different language. Will that be a feature in the 1.0 product? We'll have to see when it starts hitting Ultrabooks later this year. Billy Steele contributed to this report.

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:17 AM PST Sports, sports, sports, sports. Hey, it's LG spectrum, a good phone at sports! LG showed off its 4.5-inch handset today, during its CES kickoff press event -- and when we say "showed off," we mean exactly that, the company had two models on-hand, and it wasn't letting us poor members of the press actually get our paws on the thing. From our vantage point, however, it really does look to be a solid piece of hardware. It's fairly skinny, in spite of that large display. The body of the thing is pretty straight-forward -- it's a large slab, with rounded corners and a border around the edge that forms a bit of a lip at the point of contact. The top bit of the bezel rocks the Verizon logo and a small, front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera. Below the display are three buttons, the menu and back white touch buttons and a silver home button that adds a bit of flourish to an otherwise drab bezel. That 4.5-inch IPS HD LCD is clearly the centerpiece of the thing, and given the company's ESPN partnership, it was keen on using it to show off sports. And we have to say, the tiny basketball players looks pretty crisp -- high-def may be the key to watching video on such a relatively small screen. Well, HD and squinting. Flip it over and you'll see a subtle checkered pattern on the glossy rear. At top, a good deal of real estate is devoted to the 8MP camera, including a large, silver border. A white LG logo is smack dab in the center, and a not-so-subtle reminder of the phone's 4G LTE capabilities graces the bottom, along with two small speaker grills. All in all, this is shaping up to be an extremely solid phone -- sports-lover or no. It'll hit on January 19th for $200. |
Android-style FaceUnlock ported to iOS (video) Posted: 09 Jan 2012 09:15 AM PST Just because it's CES doesn't mean that other amazing innovations aren't going on elsewhere. We've spotted this video of an app being built (from scratch) for iOS that duplicates the FaceUnlock technology we know and love on Android 4.0. Simply stick your face in view of the camera and it'll start identifying your fizzog -- with live detection and rejection all demoed in the clip we've got after the break. From the video, it's promised to make a trip to the App Store soon, hopefully without earning the ire of the retail guardians of Cupertino. |
