This electric wire is four atoms thick, and you thought speaker cable was fiddly (video) Posted: 06 Jan 2012 10:53 AM PST This should come as a great relief to anyone planning a quantum computer self-build: wires still conduct electricity and obey key laws of classical physics even when they're built at the nanoscale. Researchers at Purdue and Melbourne universities used chains of phosphorus atoms inside a silicon crystal to create a wire that's just four atoms wide and a single atom high -- 20 times smaller than the previous record-holder and infinitely narrower than anything you'd find at Newegg. The video after the break almost explains how they did it. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 06 Jan 2012 10:31 AM PST If all those TV shows haven't completely eroded your short term memory, you may recall the time we spent with Dijit's remote control app, way back in early December. The company tells us that it's finally ready for prime time, taking advantage of the extra screen real estate the Apple tablet has to offer. The app lets you use the iPad to control your Roku and Griffin Beacon. It also features a TV guide, where you can search by genre, category, keyword or check out what your friends are watching -- and if you hate watching alone, you can always use it to send your viewing habits to Twitter or Facebook. And for the easily distracted, the app also offers up "complimentary content" for your shows via Wikipedia and YouTube. |
Nokia acquires mobile OS outfit Smarterphone: because clearly, Windows Phone just isn't enough Posted: 06 Jan 2012 10:24 AM PST Nah, neither MeeGo nor Symbian were robust enough to keep Nokia interested, but for whatever reason, a Norwegian mobile OS outfit by the name of Smarterphone has something that Elop and co. just can't resist. As the story goes, Ferd Capital has sold Smarterphone AS to Espoo's finest, and actually, the deal went down (all too quietly) back in November of last year. The company claims that it makes ultra-smart mobile operating system software for featurephones, enabling users to get a smartphone-like experience on "affordable hardware." Of course, we've all seen how well that kind of thing goes over in mature markets. Granted, Nokia's playing its hand in a great many locales, and there's certainly the possibility that this OS will gain traction in markets that were previously ruled by Symbian. Moreover, there's the possibility that Nokia simply wanted the talent that came with the company, and that it'll scrap the actual code as soon as it gets the new crew onboard. Neither company's coming right out and saying what their plans are, and no financial details have been disclosed, but something tells us you won't see the fruits of Smarterphone's labor on a Lumia device anytime soon. |
MasterImage 3D touts 720p glasses-free 3D smartphone display, WUXGA tablet panel Posted: 06 Jan 2012 09:58 AM PST 3D had its way with CES 2011, and despite throngs of consumers who could not possibly care less, it looks as if the third dimension will be doing its best to seem important at this year's gala, too. MasterImage 3D has just announced that it'll be showcasing a pair of new panels here in Las Vegas, with both relying on cell-matrix parallax barrier technology to pull off the "glasses-free" effect. Up first is a CMI-rivaling 720p HD 3D display meant for 4.3-inch smartphones; given the popularity of the EVO 3D, we're guessing it won't take HTC too long to snap a couple of these up in a bid to concoct an equally successful successor. Over on the tablet front, there's a 10.1-incher with a native WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolution, but there's no word yet on any OEMs selecting it for use on their next slate. We're told that all of the demos given will rely on Texas Instruments' OMAP4430 and OMAP4460 mobile processors, and not surprisingly, Android will be the OS underneath. We'll have a gander once the show floor opens up, but something tells us it'll look precisely like every other glasses-free 3D application: subpar. Masterimage 3D Launches HD 720 and WUXGA Glasses-Free Mobile 3D Display Technology Demonstration of Company's Industry-Leading Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier Technology for a 4.3" Smartphone and 10.1" Tablets will be Shown at the Consumer Electronics Show HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- MasterImage 3D, one of the fastest growing 3D solutions providers in the world, today announced it has launched glasses-free HD 720 resolution 3D display for a 4.3" smartphone and WUXGA (1920*1200) resolution 3D display for a 10.1" tablet. A demonstration of the technology, showcasing a first-look at premium 3D content streamed through MasterImage 3D Media's embedded portal and media player, will be shown at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week in the MasterImage 3D booth (South Hall, lower level, #21727). All demonstrations feature MasterImage 3D's Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier with smart multicore OMAP4430 and OMAP4460 mobile processors from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI), Chimei Innolux (CMI) TFT panels and the latest Google Android operating system. Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier Technology is MasterImage 3D's proprietary solution that is invented, patented and mass-produced as the leading technology in glasses-free 3D display. The technology provides brighter images, lessened crosstalk, reduced moire effects (or rippled appearance) and the widest possible viewing angle. Units being shown at CES by MasterImage 3D will run content from MasterImage 3D's content portal and 3D Media Player, an embedded digital 3D mobile storefront providing MasterImage 3D display partners with streaming premium 3D content and secure e-commerce fulfillment. Content presented on MasterImage 3D glasses-free 3D technology: 3D Movie Trailers (including Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, Universal Pictures/Illumination Entertainment) National Geographic (U2 3D, Sea Monsters 3D; Flying Monsters 3D) Red Bull Media House North America, Inc. (The Art of Flight with Venture 3D) Handpicked playlists of 3D videos on YouTube Animated Book (HarperCollins)- Fancy Nancy and Splat the Cat (3D conversion by Venture 3D) 2D to 3D conversions (Harold Lloyd's Safety Last by Legend3D) Independent Shorts (Digital Revolution Studios) Music Videos (AWOLNATION's Not Your Fault – by The Faktion) MasterImage 3D display technology will also be demonstrated by partners at CES: TI Wireless: Meeting space N-116 (North Hall) 3D@Home: Booth #13342 "This technology is truly pioneering for the 3D industry. Literally, never before has anyone seen 3D resolution on a smartphone or tablet that looks so compelling and amazingly beautiful and doesn't need glasses," said Roy Taylor, Display EVP and GM, MasterImage 3D. "The ability to view movies, read animated books, take pictures and video clips and play games-all in 3D that's a joy to look at- is an astonishing breakthrough." iOS 5.1 beta indicates Apple may be testing quad-core mobile CPUs Posted: 06 Jan 2012 09:36 AM PST Lets get this out of the way up front -- this is not a confirmation that Apple is planning to put a quad-core A6 chip inside its next iPad or iPhone. What it does indicate is that Apple may be testing iOS support for quad-core CPUs. 9to5Mac has dug up images from the latest beta of iOS 5.1 that detail the supported number of cores. In this hidden panel, single-core A4s are referred to as "/cores/core.0" while dual-core A5s are "/cores/core.1." Now a new listing, "/cores/core.3," is popping up which, if you start counting with zero, indicates a CPU packing four cores. This doesn't mean that Apple even has this up and running on test hardware yet, though, merely that software support for quad-core chips is in the works. But, that should be enough to really kick the rumor mill into overdrive. |
Nikon D4 hands-on and manufacturer sample images (video) Posted: 06 Jan 2012 09:00 AM PST With the onslaught of CES launches still several days away, the big news today is the D4, Nikon's brand new full-frame digital SLR camera. The 16.2 megapixel DSLR offers 1080/30p video capture, an extended ISO range of 100 to 204,800, a 91,000-pixel 3D color matrix meter and a top high-speed shooting option of 11 frames-per-second. And with the D3 first hitting stores nearly five years ago, this FX-mount successor was long overdue. Earlier today, Nikon held its D4 launch event in Asia, previewing the camera before a group of journalists in Hong Kong. We were on hand for a first look at the massive $6,000 pro body, and were quite pleased with what we saw. Jump past the break for our impressions. In what seems to be a move consistent throughout the industry, the D4's body is strikingly similar to its half-decade-old predecessor. There's no edgy new design to speak of, and all of the controls are exactly where you'd expect them to be. That's not to say Nikon didn't make a few tweaks, however. First, there's a full set of vertical controls for firing the camera and adjusting key settings without awkwardly reaching around the body to access the buttons up top -- an improvement that's sure to be appreciated by portrait and wedding shooters. The main shutter release was also moved slightly forward, for a more natural feel, and a dedicated movie capture button was added. There's also a new pair of joystick-like controls for navigating menus and moving around an image while zoomed in during playback. Overall, the additional controls improve upon the interface without introducing clutter -- an advantage granted by the generous body size. A larger body also means more room for ports, and the D4 has plenty. To the left of the 3.2-inch, 921k-dot LCD you'll find a proprietary connector for the TW-5A plug-in WiFi adapter that can be used to network cameras wireless and even fire them remotely, using the built-in web server. Below that is a full-size Ethernet jack, if you'd prefer to go the wired route. There's also a remote connector, microphone input jack (!), headphone jack, mini-USB and an HDMI port, which can be used both for video playback and piping out an uncompressed live preview feed, for capturing raw video using a external device. There are also two memory card slots available -- one CompactFlash and one XQD, for use with the high-speed next-gen format announced last month. All the main multipurpose controls are just to the left of the memory card slots, while secondary buttons can be found below and to the left of the LCD -- essential controls are now backlit, making them possible to find in the dark. We weren't permitted to publish photos and video shot with the D4, so unfortunately we can't speak to the camera's image quality, though we were able to dig up some samples captured by Nikon photographers, including two shot at ISO 6400. Of course, we're just as curious as you about what it's like shooting at ISO 204,800, but it appears that we'll need to wait at least a few more days to find out. For now, hit up the source link for five sample images from Nikon, and stay tuned for our full review. Stone Ip contributed to this report. Sony's Kaz Hirai to step up as president as early as April Posted: 06 Jan 2012 08:50 AM PST Nikkei is reporting that Sony will be promoting current Executive Deputy President Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai to president as soon as April, while Howard Stringer is expected to remain chairman and CEO of the company. As you may recall, Sony started its search for a new president as far back as November 2010, and with Kaz's two promotions last year (to Executive Deputy President in April and to Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman in September), it isn't surprising that he's the chosen one to pick up some of Sir Howard's work. It'll be a while before we see the consequences of this promotion, and anything can happen between now and the board meeting as early as next month to seal the deal; but here's hoping that under Kaz, Sony will go easy on all these new memory card formats while it further unifies its various groups within the corporation. |
Netflix app hits PlayStation 3s in the UK, service still coming 'soon' Posted: 06 Jan 2012 08:44 AM PST Netflix still isn't offering a firm date for its launch in the UK, but it looks like some of the final pieces are starting to fall into place. The company's PlayStation 3 app is now hitting consoles across the pond, displaying the message you see above when it's launched. Unfortunately, that's about all we have to go on at the moment, but PS3 users can now at least rest assured that they won't have any waiting to do when Netflix does finally flip the switch -- one more shot after the break. [Thanks, Fabio] |

USB Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer III makes leaving your basement apartment even less appealing Posted: 06 Jan 2012 07:07 AM PST "Get up and go" is for the birds, man. But in the off-chance that your PC, home entertainment system and various gaming consoles weren't enough to keep you inside for days at a time, check out the upgraded version of Brando's USB Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer. The third iteration of the temperature gauging device gives you the sort of accuracy you just can't get from TV and internet forecasts. The thermometer can give you instant readings without having to install extra software -- you just hold down the caps and number lock keys and it will copy the current temperate to your clipboard. It can also send you the temperature via text message, for those times when you can't be bothered to start up the computer. The price of such glorious slothfulness? A mere $32, American. |

A pair of Bluetooth headsets are on tap, the HM1800 and HM6000 (the latter of which boasts a pair of mics for noise cancellation ) but, oddly enough, it the company's "your sound" wired models that are getting the bulk of the attention. OCZ details Z-Drive R5 enterprise SSD, reckons it doubles speed of the R4 Posted: 06 Jan 2012 06:46 AM PST We've barely digested the carb-rich Z-Drive R4 and already OCZ wants to flaunt the next in its series of enterprise PCIe SSDs. The R5 sports an entirely new 'Kilimanjaro' controller platform (shown in the reference design above), developed in cahoots with Marvell and incorporated into each and every flash module that you might wish to add to the base card. These scalable controllers communicate directly with the host system, removing the need for an extra SATA RAID chip and thereby promising greater speeds -- especially as you pile on more modules. We won't get full specs until CES, but in the meantime OCZ has hinted at a doubling of the SandForce-based R4's performance, which could take us into the three million IOP realm. So long as the company also tackles the question of reliability on this new type of drive, then it'll likely be an easy sell. Check out the source link for more. |
Sony flashes new XQD memory cards, your pre-ordered Nikon D4 smiles coyly Posted: 06 Jan 2012 06:21 AM PST We've been eagerly awaiting some of that next-gen XQD memory since it was announced right around a month ago, and now that we have something worthy to pop it in, we're doubly buzzed. Sony's the first to step forward, kicking off with QDH16 ($129) and QDH32 ($229) cards where the number represents the capacity. When the specs first came out of the darkroom there was talk of 5Gb/s write speeds; these might not be quite that rapid, but at 1Gb/s (125 MB/s), we're still not complaining. Sony thinks the cards will be good for up 100 frames in RAW format in continuous shooting mode, based on its tests. There'll also be a card reader and adapter for easy portability, both setting you back a further $45 when the whole lot hits the shelves in February. Click the PR after the jump for more info. 1Gbps for faster write speed and superb reliability create new possibilities for advanced shooters SONY ELECTRONICS XQD Sony's new XQD(TM) memory card for high-speed, high-performance digital image capture. (PRNewsFoto/Sony Electronics) PARK RIDGE, NJ UNITED STATES PARK RIDGE, N.J., Jan 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Giving photo enthusiasts and professional photographers a new level of speed and performance, the new Sony XQD™ memory cards support the recently adopted XQD specification for high-speed, high-performance digital image capture. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120105/LA31007) Using the XQD memory cards, XQD compatible high-end DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera users can capture up to approximately 100 frames in RAW format in continuous shooting mode. In addition to outstanding high-speed data transfer capability, the new cards are highly reliable to protect users' data and images. "Advanced shooters want to capture the moment in the highest quality possible, and that often means dealing with massive files like RAW images," said Viviano Cantu, Director of Consumer Media for Sony Electronics. "Memory card technology has done a great job of keeping pace, but these new cards give an entirely new meaning to speed and performance." The new Sony cards are based on the XQD memory card specification, which the CompactFlash Association recently approved and licensed as an open format. With its ultra high write-speed performance, and when using Nikon's new DSLR "D4," the XQD memory card can record up to approximately 100 frames in RAW format in continuous shooting mode*. The Sony XQD memory card achieves stable continuous shooting of RAW images and blazing fast data transfer rates of up to 1Gbps/125MB/s write and read (based on Sony tests and dependent on host hardware) through the PCIe interface, a computer expansion card standard for serial interfaces. A unique controller and optimized flash memory enables high-speed data processing, resulting in faster write speed and performance that can't be achieved by conventional compact flash cards. Sony is also introducing a USB 2.0/3.0 compatible XQD card reader (model MRW-E80) so users can quickly and easily transfer large quantities of very high capacity data to their PC. Also, an XQD ExpressCard Adapter (QDA-EX1) will be available for use with computers with an ExpressCard™ 34 card slot. "As users' needs continue to evolve," Cantu added, "Sony will also continue to enhance the XQD memory card line-up to meet the future requirements of the high-end digital imaging market." The new Sony products are planned to be available in February and are estimated to sell at the following retail prices: QD-H16 card, 16 GB, $129.99 QD-H32 card, 32 GB, $229.99 Card Reader, MRW-E80, $44.99 ExpressCard Adapter, QDA-EX1, $44.99 For information, visit www.sony.net/Products/memorycard/en_us/xqd/index.html. * When used with Nikon "D4," with capture of compressed 12-bit NEF (RAW) images; based on Nikon research. Kogeto's iCONIC for Android brings panoramic video to the masses Posted: 06 Jan 2012 06:00 AM PST The last time we saw a Kogeto panoramic camera attachment, it was but a Kickstarter project looking for funding. Since then, the Kogeto Dot for iPhone has become such a success that it now graces Apple store shelves nationwide. Not content with only an iOS slice of the mobile pie, the company has, naturally, created an Android version to be officially unveiled at CES next week. Dubbed iCONIC for Android -- after the iCONIC lens technology that makes taking 360-degree videos possible -- the attachment will initially be made for the Galaxy Nexus, with more phones to follow. However, the device will only be made for phones that can record in 1080p, so the iPhone 4 will be the final handset capturing panoramic movies in 720p. Of course, the company has also ported the free companion Looker app to Android to dewarp the raw images into viewable video. Pre-orders for iCONIC for Android start in late January on the company website, and you can grab one for $79. We got to speak with Kogeto CEO Jeff Glasse about iCONIC for Android, and he indicated that the company's plans for it (like the attachment itself) differ from the Kogeto Dot. While Kogeto is currently making one version of the device, Glasse told us the company doesn't plan to build an attachment for every eligible Android phone. Instead, the idea is to license the technology to OEMs and let them manufacture iCONIC for the myriad handsets. This is all very good news for moviemaking Android users, but fear not, Kogeto hasn't forgotten you Apple folks. Glasse informed us that a new version of the iOS app is coming soon that'll let users start and stop recording with the volume buttons on their iPhones. We're hoping to give you all a glimpse of iCONIC for Android next week at CES, so stay tuned. |
Sony Ericsson's Nozomi gets handled, something awfully similar gets an official tease Posted: 06 Jan 2012 05:44 AM PST Hello, New York! Oh, and a Sony Ericsson handset, too. SE may be on its way out officially, but there's still a product or two in the pipeline worth pushing out. We've heard whispers of a so-called Arc HD and Nozomi for months on end, and while it's unclear which of the two (if it's either) is shown above, there's no question that this is something that'll see the market. One shot is currently posted over at Sony Ericsson's German Facebook page (shown after the break), where a teaser line promises that "the new Xperia" to be officially unveiled "next week." Next week, as you may have guessed, is CES, and coincidentally, the fine folks over at ITProPortal have wrapped their paws around an SE handset (above) that they're confident is the aforementioned Nozomi. Weirdly, the camera location on the phone they procured is different than the official SE shot above, leaving us to wonder if two new superphones are on tap. Whatever the case, you can bet we'll be bringing the dirt as soon as it's hauled in. [Thanks, Shubham] |

Magellan unveils Switch, Switch Up GPS watches for runners, swimmers, extremists Posted: 06 Jan 2012 05:00 AM PST Magellan is tossing its hat into the sporty ring today, with the Switch and Switch Up -- a pair of GPS watches designed for number-crunching runners, cyclists and other endurance enthusiasts. Boasting a petite, 1.26-inch display, these petite devices allows joggers to monitor and record their distance, pace and elevation, thanks to a sensitive GPS receiver that promises an accuracy range of between three and five meters. Akai makes intentions clear with MPC Renaissance (video) Posted: 06 Jan 2012 04:31 AM PST While the majority of technology execs are packing their cases for Vegas, for some it's all about Anaheim. Akai is clearly ramping up its NAMM campaign, outing the latest in its legendary MPC series: the Renaissance. While the new boy is no dumb controller -- it packs a full audio interface, USB hub and lots of I/O -- for the first time the MPC gets dedicated external software. Sound familiar? Well yes, it's no doubt a direct response to the popular Maschine hardware / software combo from Native Instruments, but Akai isn't just playing catch-up here. The new hardware includes a "vintage" mode that recreates some of that legendary MPC3000/60 crunch, and the standalone software comes with a massive sound library, instant VST mapping (so you can work with all your third-party synths) as well as the option to run in VST / AU / RTAS mode itself. If you're worried about the possible implications of a "tethered" MPC, take a peek at the promo video over the jump, which should soon allay your fears. |
Grad students forge digital light projector into medical imaging device, can't find dates Posted: 06 Jan 2012 04:10 AM PST If it's a geek badge of honor to find an entirely new use for something, then the grad students at UC Irvine have earned theirs. Over at the university, a group of grad students have hacked an off-the-shelf digital light projector to create a spatial frequency domain imaging system. Once complete, the budding mad scientists were able to image their thesis adviser's bicycling injuries and have used it to measure the oxygenation of skin flaps during reconstructive breast surgery. Click past the break for a video of the device in action, and remember this: helping your professor with their sports injuries and reconstructed bosoms may not equal Dean's List, but it sure can't hurt. Japan working on powerful cyber weapon, knows best defense is a good offense Posted: 06 Jan 2012 03:48 AM PST The Japanese government has been (relatively) quietly churning away on an advanced new cyber weapon. In the post Stuxnet age it's no surprise that a government would be working on powerful new tools to defend its digital borders, but this particular virus (developed with help from Fujitsu) is raising eyebrows with some over how it accomplishes its goals. Essentially, when it detects an intruding piece of malware, the program follows the virtual trail left behind back to the attack's source -- disabling every machine it encounters along the way. The goal, obviously, is to stop the spread of a malicious piece of code by finding and shutting down, not just the source, but all middleman PCs that are also now potential hosts. In some admitedly extreme scenarios this weapon could potentially spiral out of control, taking out far more computers than intended. Nightmarish hellscapes dominated by computers run amok aside, its definitely interesting and we understand how it might cause some concern. Check out the source for a few more details. |

Moog cuts the bull, reveals Minitaur analogue synth (video) Posted: 06 Jan 2012 12:57 AM PST What's that noise? The sound of a thousand synth-lovers' hearts melting. Why? Because the godfather of bass, Moog, has just raised the muleta on its forthcoming analogue Minitaur bass synth. Inspired by the legendary Taurus range of pedals, the Minitaur (get it?) doles up low-frequency loveliness via two square / saw oscillators and Moog's notorious "ladder filter," imparting its distinctive character on all that passes through it. The retro pots and metal casing scream vintage authenticity, but it's not all about looking back. Sure, the Minitaur might accept old skool CV signals, but it also does MIDI over USB, so its small understated footprint will fit-in just fine, whatever your set-up. With a $679 price tag when it launches in spring, it'll cause more damage to your bass cones than your wallet. Check the videos after the jump to see the beast in action.

HTC's growth streak is over: quarterly revenue down 2.5 per cent, profits even worse Posted: 05 Jan 2012 11:12 PM PST Difficult times for a company that had grown used to a gleaming record of growth. As predicted after that serious stutter in November sales, HTC's unaudited revenue for Q4 2011 shows a 2.49 percent fall on the same quarter in 2010. Unaudited operating income was just shy of 13 billion Taiwanese dollars (about $430 million), which represents a 22 percent decline on the year before. Prior to this, the company had seen nothing but upward movement after springing out of nowhere a few years ago and delivering us some rather nice handsets, but it looks like competition in the Android sphere (read: Samsung) is starting to make life harder for the Taiwanese manufacturer -- although none of its recent statements betray much in the way of self-reflection. |
Frustrated fans demand Motorola make good on promise, deliver unlocked bootloaders Posted: 05 Jan 2012 11:06 PM PST Like HTC and Sony Ericsson, Motorola had previously committed itself to deliver products with unlockable bootloaders. In fact, the company went so far as to profess that it would make this functionality available across its entire product line by late 2011 -- subject to carrier approval, anyway. While the first two companies have made good on their claims, Motorola seems content to be silent on the matter. Certainly the international version of the RAZR can't equal the sum total of the company's promise, right? Now that 2011 has come and gone, some of Motorola's most fervent supporters are growing anxious. In an effort to grab the company's attention -- and see that something gets done -- one individual has started Operation: Make Ourselves Heard, which has gathered approximately 1,600 signatures from like-minded individuals, each who seek tangible progress from Motorola. If this issue is important to you, we certainly encourage you to sign the petition. |

Cornell scientists perform optical illusion, herald invisibility through bending of light (video) Posted: 05 Jan 2012 10:08 PM PST Taken at face value, you'd almost think that Cornell scientists had successfully bent the fabric of time. With gobs of fiber optics at their disposal, the researchers have devised a method to distort light in a way that makes events in time undetectable to observers. Initial success in this Pentagon-backed invisibility project has cloaked an event for 40 trillionths of a second, leading Cornell scientists to tout, "You kind of create a hole in time where an event takes place. You just don't know that anything ever happened." The feat is performed by separating light into more fundamental wavelengths, first by slowing the red and speeding the blue. A resultant gap forms in the beam, which leaves a small window for subterfuge. Then, as the light passes through another set of fibers -- which slow the blue and speed the red -- light reaches the observer as if no disturbance had taken place at all. While the brilliant researchers ultimately imagine art thieves being able to pass undetected through museums with this method, the immediate challenge will be in prolonging the light gap. This could prove frustrating, however, due to the scattering and dispersion effects of light. As Cornell scientists dream of their ultimate heist, visual learners will most certainly want to check the video after the break. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Ford to demo beta of MyFord Mobile app at CES, lets you tweet about your Focus from afar Posted: 05 Jan 2012 09:39 PM PST Still giddy about taking possession of that electric Focus that you pre-ordered back in November? Well, before Dearborn gets the chance to airdrop that electric hatch into your driveway, know it'll be previewing a new beta of the MyFord Mobile smartphone app at CES. For those unaware, that's a mobile ware that displays battery info and range, where charging stations lurk, helps plan routes and can adjust climate, all while acting as a remote. It also boasts a bevy of social functions, ripe with achievements and statistics that let you stack up against your Ford-toting EV friends -- naturally replete with the ability to upload boastful scores to your social network of choice. PR and a video detailing all await you after the break. MyFord Mobile: Drive Greener and Challenge Friends to Help the Earth with Ford's Electric Vehicle Smartphone App • Ford will showcase the beta version and new social networking components of the MyFord® Mobile app with the new Focus Electric for the first time, live at the 2012 International CES • MyFord Mobile stands apart from competitive offerings by harnessing coaching and social networking to help drivers go green and have fun in the process • The CES award-winning MyFord Mobile app will allow Focus Electric owners to smart charge their car through Value Charging powered by Microsoft, optimizing charging times to reduce electricity costs associated with driving an electric vehicle, a feature exclusive to Ford • Users can monitor charging, receive alerts, find charge stations, plan trips, share information and more from their smartphones or computers via MyFord Mobile, for an effortless transition to an electric vehicle lifestyle DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 4, 2012 – Ford Motor Company is combining its new Focus Electric, social networking and hypermiling trends with its new MyFord® Mobile app that makes it easier than ever to drive green. Ford will demonstrate the first-ever beta versions of the new technology at the 2012 International CES, taking place Jan. 10-13 in Las Vegas. Focus Electric drivers will be able to share, learn and teach smart driving by participating in forums on the MyFord Mobile website – with features such as leaderboards, unique achievements and social networking – when the car becomes available through dealers in the first half of 2012. In the process, users will be able to seamlessly upload driving achievements and statistics to popular social platforms like Facebook and Twitter. "The MyFord Mobile app and the Focus Electric work together to coach drivers to be more efficient and maximize the benefits of the electric vehicle experience," said Kelly Zechel, MyFord Mobile product manager. "We wanted to help drivers get more miles out of every charge and have some fun along the way." In addition to the fun of not having to stop at gas stations, MyFord Mobile adds gaming and social sharing components to the driving experience. Just as in video games, drivers of the Focus Electric can earn achievements based on how far they drive and how much CO2 they save by not using gas. The leaderboards help MyFord Mobile users track their driving results against other Focus Electric drivers. Drivers will also earn achievements for engaging in the online MyFord Mobile community forum. The first time drivers share their experiences, help another driver answer a question or provide a helpful tip to others, they will earn an achievement, with more to come after 20 and 100 postings. There are even "surprise achievements" embedded in the app based on the owner's activities, much like "easter eggs" that can give gamers extra bonuses in video games. Collectively, the achievements help Focus Electric drivers "keep score" with their peers via competitive rankings. Leading the charge MyFord Mobile was announced in early 2011 as a social platform to revolutionize the EV driving experience. In November, the International CES awarded the app as winner in the software and mobile app category. Going further, CES awarded MyFord Mobile the "Best of Innovation" recognition, a first for an OEM. MyFord Mobile's Value Charging by Microsoft offers drivers a "set it and forget it" mindset to ease concern about managing the vehicle's charge in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. This technology can lower a driver's utility bill by automatically charging the Focus Electric at off-peak times when energy is cheapest, an industry-exclusive to Ford. Additionally, Ford is leveraging its relationship with MapQuest – and its commitment to having the best EV charge point database and route planning feature – to offer the industry's only charging station locator. MyFord Mobile is the only electric vehicle management application to include routing and charge station location functionality. A superior design, user interface and speed of function response ensure MyFord Mobile is the most user-friendly EV app available, and with AT&T as Ford's embedded solution provider, additional support resources are available to MyFord Mobile users. The following video demonstrates many of the features that make MyFord Mobile stand apart from competitive offerings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86Yj2WQL3n8. "Driving the Focus Electric will be a fun experience; with MyFord Mobile, the enjoyment continues after the vehicle is parked and charging," said Bill Frykman, Business and Product Development Manager. "We are offering a new way of sharing your driving experiences to create a cool factor with the goal of educating new Focus Electric drivers on the perks that come with an electric vehicle lifestyle." # # # About Ford Motor Company Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures or distributes automobiles across six continents. Ford to open R&D lab in Silicon Valley come 2012, wants to be closer to the action Posted: 05 Jan 2012 08:01 PM PST Following in the footsteps of Verizon and AT&T, it's now Ford's turn to open up its very own research center here in Silicon Valley. A prudent choice too, as Dearborn's become more invested in advanced infotainment, not to mention bonafide smartphone apps. Slated to open in the first quarter of 2012, it reckons the center will help "prepare [Ford] for the next 100 years" as it scouts out new technologies and partnerships with local startups and universities alike. Mum's the word on exactly where the new R&D lab will reside, but those interested can learn more about it and its sister facilities -- whom Ford lovingly dubs its "innovation network" -- in the PR after the break. Ford Creates First Silicon Valley Presence with New Research Lab to Drive Innovation in Personal Mobility • Ford Motor Company will create and open a new research lab in Silicon Valley early this year – its first-ever dedicated R&D office on the west coast • New lab will support Ford's vision that its future is not just about building cars but about creating uncompromised personal mobility experiences for people around the world • Lab will be a hub for Ford to develop a wide spectrum of partnerships with established and startup tech firms and with universities in the area, such as Stanford DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 6, 2012 – Ford Motor Company today announced plans to create and open its first dedicated research lab in Silicon Valley early this year, further growing the company's commitment to make technology affordable for millions. "Ford has an incredible heritage of driving innovation in the transportation and manufacturing sectors during the past 107 years," said Paul Mascarenas, Ford chief technical officer and vice president of Research and Innovation. "Now it's time to prepare for the next 100 years, ushering in a new era of collaboration and finding new partners to help us transform what it means to be an automaker." Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally will elaborate on the new areas of focus for the forthcoming Silicon Valley lab, plus Ford's latest industry-leading technologies including SYNC®, EcoBoost™, MyKey® and inflatable rear safety belts, when he returns to the International CES on Jan. 11 for the Innovation Power Panel keynote. This will be Ford's fourth consecutive keynote presentation at CES. Ford Research and Innovation, the company's advanced engineering arm, will open the new Silicon Valley lab in the first quarter, helping ensure Ford keeps pace with consumer trends and aggressively prepares for the future by developing mobility solutions to harness the power of seamless connectivity, cloud computing and clean technology. "An open attitude to new ideas is critical to solving the transportation, environmental and societal challenges we expect in the future," said Mascarenas. "With increasing pressures from urbanization and the need to reduce energy use, we're going to see energy storage, wireless connectivity, sensing systems and even autonomous vehicles as key parts of the solution." The new Ford lab will be located in the San Francisco Bay area of California and will serve as a hub for independent technology projects and identification of new research investments and partners located along the west coast. Ultimately, the lab will create an "innovation network" connecting Ford's Advanced Design Studio in Irvine, Calif., and Ford employees working with connectivity platform partner Microsoft Corp. in Redmond, Wash. "Silicon Valley represents a deep and dynamic technology neighborhood and is far from Dearborn," said K. Venkatesh Prasad, senior technical leader for open innovation with Ford Research and Innovation. "With so many opportunities and so much potential, our new lab will allow us to scout new technologies and partners in their own environment and continue our expansion beyond the traditional automaker mindset to drive innovation for a better mobility experience." Prasad – a Silicon Valley veteran himself – will travel from Dearborn to the Bay area regularly to shape the lab. The new research lab's employees will be recruited both locally and rotated-in from the global network of Ford employees and will spend their time developing and discovering new technologies, trends, partners and collaborative research projects, said Prasad. The number of Ford employees at its new lab will be comparable to what you expect of a startup, with an emphasis on quality over quantity, said Prasad. Prasad added that the establishment of Ford's all-new Silicon Valley lab will not duplicate or replace work being done at the company's Research and Innovation Center in Dearborn, its European facility in Aachen, Germany, or the recently established technology office in Nanjing, China. Ford's global Research and Innovation team is already working in several key areas that will be supported by the work of the Silicon Valley lab including: • Personal mobility: Mindful of consumer trends and the growth of megacities, Ford is researching new business models that will help avoid the creation of global gridlock through a holistic approach to personal transportation • Open-source hardware and software developer kits: Working with New York City-based startup Bug Labs, Ford is launching OpenXC, a research platform that will allow developers to access key vehicle data in order to innovate cloud-based apps and services. The first OpenXC beta developer kits will be shipped this month to several participating universities including MIT, University of Michigan and Stanford • The car as a sensor: Researching ways to utilize the multitude of sensors within the vehicle to improve the road for all drivers, Ford is opening the data channels to developers. For example, San Francisco-based Weather Underground is looking at ways to leverage vehicle windshield wiper activations to improve its weather proximity reporting "Ford integrates technologies, software and electronics at the same pace as the most innovative companies in the world – our platform just happens to be the car," said Mascarenas. "The new Silicon Valley lab will propel us further as we look at the many facets of life where mobility interacts with society and see how we can make those experiences better for millions of customers around the world." # # # About Ford Motor Company Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Mich., manufactures or distributes automobiles across six continents. TiVo Premiere update brings HD guide, multi-room streaming, more (Update: Android remote app too!) Posted: 05 Jan 2012 07:48 PM PST It's too early to know if this is the big TiVo update fans have been waiting for since the release of the Premiere, but there's no doubt it's a significant one. For starters, the guide has finally gotten the upgraded HD treatment -- no word if it is the only remaining old screen to get refreshed. Next up is official Premiere-to-Premiere streaming, which frees your recorded TV to be watched in any room of the house, even if the content is marked Copy Once. Other notable improvements include the integration of Hulu Plus content in TiVo search results, a revamped discover bar that actually discloses why the content is featured -- we assume this will make it more useful -- and hitting select while watching live TV now brings up a mini-guide and updated program info screen. All in all it is a nice list, but the truth will be told once some have had a chance to try it out. When that might be is still somewhat unknown, but feel free to force your Premiere to connect to TiVo service now to find out if you are in the lucky few to be the first to get the update. Update: We've got one more surprise treat for you, as a reader alerted us the official TiVo Remote app is now available in the Android Market. It claims to be compatible with phones and 7-inch tablets running Android 2.1 and up, so YMMV. Grab it at the link below, and if you've just got to get this update as soon as possible, follow @TiVoDesign on Twitter and then email in your service number for the chance of a priority update. [Thanks, @DanJacobsen!]
