Tesco adds barcode scanner to grocery shopping app

Posted: 26 Oct 2010 06:04 AM PDT

Never forget to buy milk again.

Tesco has today added a barcode scanner to its iPhone app, enabling users to add items to their shopping list on the go.

The idea is that when you get down to the last bowl of Corn Flakes in the box, you can just scan the packaging and instantly re-add it to your next shop. Or if you're over at a mates and he busts out a new seasonal ale you can do likewise.

You can then order the goods online or add it to a traditional shopping list for when you're scanning the shelves at a Tesco store. Let's face it, we all get distracted by the chocolate and ice cream isles while wondering around the supermarket so this app is bound to come in handy.

Tesco is the first supermarket to add this functionality to its mobile app, and it comes just six weeks after the free Tesco Grocery application launched on the iPhone. Amazon.com also added the feature to its app a couple of weeks ago.

Free PlayBook for all successful app developers

RIM’s attempt at an iPad challenging tablet, the BlackBerry PlayBook, has been demoed for the first time at Adobe’s MAX conference in Los Angeles as the device’s SDK is officially released to developers ahead of the product's launch early in 2011.

Just weeks ago the PlayBook was officially by announced RIM at its develop conference in San Francisco despite the models on display being nothing more than non-functional dummies encased in Plexiglas  and seen running video demos on a loop.

The operational demo at the Adobe conference is the first time the PlayBook has been seen in working order and highlights the out-of-the-box Flash and Air support that is being pegged as the BlackBerry tablet’s killer blow.

Developers looking to produce content for the BlackBerry PlayBook can now download the device’s SDK with RIM co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis, taking to the LA stage to declare that all devs who have a PlayBook app approved into the BlackBerry App World will be on the receiving end of a free RIM tablet.

Fallout: New Vegas hits top spot on UK game chart

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 11:45 PM PDT

Game set in the future tops over others in the UK gaming chart.

The UK gaming chart has a new winner this week. Fallout: New Vegas, developed by Obsidian and published by Bethesda has toppled over Medal of Honor by EA to get to top spot.

Fallout: New Vegas takes place in the year 2281, years after the events in Fallout 3 - though it's not a sequel to the latter game. The game is set in post-apocalyptic Las Vegas, with players in the role of a courier. After being ambushed and rescued by a robot, the player gets to sink in his/her teeth into the actual gaming.

Medal of Honor, which fell to second place, is a first-person shooter game, with its latest version based on the problems in current-day Afghanistan.

In the rest of the chart, EA's FIFA '11 moved one spot to third, and Nintendo's Professor Layton and the Lost Future debuted at fourth position.

Bungie's Halo: Reach has slipped out of the top 10 to the 11th spot this week.

Virgin Media might launch 100Mbps broadband this week

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 11:15 PM PDT

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's super-fast broadband.

Virgin Media's 100Mbps broadband looks set to land this week with the Prime Minister letting slip its release date.

When David Cameron gave a speech about a 'new economic dynamism' to the CBI, he mentioned that Virgin Media would be revealing the "new ultrafast 100Mbps service."

According to TechRadar, Cameron said: "...we'll work with utility companies to get more investment in our energy, with construction companies on our roads, with the telecommunications industry on broadband. This collaboration is already working. Virgin Media is rolling out a new superfast broadband service this week."

The Prime Minister to continued to say that it was exciting to soon unveil the super-fast broadband connection at a 100Mbps.

Virgin Media has not commented on the speculated release date, although with the Prime Minister's words, we can expect the details to drop any time now.

With rural areas getting broadband, BT moving into fibre-optic networks and Virgin Media's new broadband service, the UK can hope for a faster and more developed broadband future.

What are your thoughts on the rumoured 100Mbps broadband? Pop over to T3's Twitter and Facebook accounts to give us a shout out, and keep following us to see what's next in the broadband saga.
