News@8pm: PSP Phone pics leaked as Gaga takes YouTube

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 12:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly roundup of the days news, reviews and goings on courtesy of T3.com

Music fans blast out some big tunes online as Lady Gaga breaks the YouTube record for her music videos, proving that pop is another form of art to some. Bad news for all you piratical types out there however, as the infamous music downloading site Limewire has been shut down. Guess it's time for everyone to start buying from iTunes, but while you're there, why don't you download our T3 app.

Mythical technology is all the rage today as Sony PlayStation Phone photos have been leaked. Quick, get a look while you can. The previously delayed rare White iPhone 4 has been delayed once again, so why not take a peek at what we're sure you were all expecting in your Christmas stocking this year?

Price drop and new app arrivals for Apple owners. Good news, the Apple iPod touch 8GB (4th Gen) is available for only £169.95 on Amazon. At that price you might as well buy one for all your loved ones. iPad owners don't even have to go online to buy one, not with the new Amazon Windowshop store released by Amazon. Soon you'll be able to use the iPad as a toilet.

Connectivity and readers have been extremely popular with technology lovers today. Barnes and Noble have officially announced their new Nook Colour eBook. A very swish way to read a book. A public beta has been released for Windows Phone 7 users for a new handset connector that allows owners to sync their phone with an Apply Mac. It's all about connecting people, oh wait that's Nokia.

Amazon releases Windowshop store for iPad

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 08:38 AM PDT

Amazon continues its iPad onslaught.

Some observers felt that Amazon had much to fear from the iPad, with the iBook Store moving in on its Kindle business, but Amazon responed with a Kindle app for the device.

Now the company has continued to embrace the Apple tablet by launching a version of Amazon.com built exclusively for the device.

The new Amazon.com Windowshop app is a "top to bottom rebuild" of the phenomenally successful online retail site, according to founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, and offers the exact same content, prices and delivery times.

The landscape only app allows users to browse through 40 different categories and zoom in on products using the touchscreen, with easy access to search and the shopping cart.

Amazon.com Windowshop is free to download from the App Store today. Meanwhile, the irony of the name is not lost on anyone.

No white iPhone 4 for Christmas

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 05:46 AM PDT

Sad news as White iPhone 4 not ready for Christmas...

Despite Steve Jobs’ promise of a pre-Christmas arrival and with a number of recent sightings including a flamboyant Steven Fry outing, Apple has announced the white edition of the market leading iPhone 4 is now delayed until spring 2011.

Consumers who had been holding out for the lighter hued handset will now face a wait well into the new year as an Apple spokeswoman declared: "We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again” adding that the white model was: “more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected".

Originally set to launch alongside the standard black model of the latest Apple handset back in July, the white edition of the iPhone 4 has been repeatedly delayed with reports suggesting the Cupertino company and its manufacturers are having trouble matching the white of the homescreen button for the entire handset shell.

Other rumoured causes for the continued delays include overheating units discolouring the rear case and Apple’s attempted work on an antenngate fix.

Windows Phone Connector app goes into public Beta

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 04:00 AM PDT

It's time for your Windows Phone 7 and Apple Mac to become one

Microsoft has released a public beta model of an app that will enable users to sync their new Windows Phone 7 handsets with an Apple Mac computer in a cross-company compatibility move that some feared would not happen.

Titled the Windows Phone Connector, the beta application, which is free to download from the Phone 7 app store, will bridge the gap of a rivalry that is both fierce and widely publicised whilst allowing users, in official Microsoft release speak, to: “synchronize your favourite music, videos, photos and podcasts from iTunes and iPhoto to your Windows Phone 7 so you can take your media with you wherever you go.”

Although Microsoft might be wishful to think it can convert Apple’s hardened Fanboys from their Macs and iPhones over to the Windows Phone 7 system, the new connector app makes the recently released and stunningly simple and seductive OS available and fully compatible for a wider consumer base.

Although Microsoft’s popular Zune service is not currently covered in the cross-compatibility app, the service that is now available across many Microsoft medium including PC, Phone 7 and Xbox LIVE is expected to be an early addition to the application’s ongoing refinement. Could Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system and the bevy of high-end handsets currently supporting the platform tempt you away from your trusty iPhone? Sony PSP Phone photos leak online, but are they fake?

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 03:29 AM PDT

Is this Android-rocking Sony Ericsson with slide-out controls the real deal?

Spy-shot pictures of the heavily rumoured and increasingly tangible Sony PSP Phone have been leaked, offering a tantalising look and the Playstation-esqe phone prototype. The handset, which has been officially debunked as fake by Sony, is rumoured to be in development ahead of a pre-Christmas 2011 launch.

Sony PSP Phone pictures:

- Click here ot see all the pics in full detail

Falling in to the hands of the Engadget team, the prototype PlayStation phone features a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 512MB of RAM and a sizable 4-inch display. Although details are far from confirmed, the gadget blog claims that the snapped PlayStation Phone is likely to run Google’s Android 3.0 mobile operating system at launch.

With a sliding mechanism that reveals PlayStation style control buttons and trackpad, the PSP Go-looking handset is said to have scrapped the Memory Stick slot in favour of a microSD card port.

However, amid all the furore Sony has come out and done it's usual 'we won't comment on rumour and speculation' bit, going as far as to declare the pictures fake. Whether the company is telling the truth or merely saying that this isn't the final design remains to be seen, but stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for further news.

Virgin Media 100mbps broadband officially rolled out

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 02:38 AM PDT

13 Million homes will be eligible to upgrade

As previously rumoured, Virgin Media has officially announced the roll out of its ultra-fast 100mbps broadband, which will roll out across its network over the next few weeks and be available to order from December. The service will allow users to download a song in 5 seconds, a TV show in 30 seconds and an HD movie in around 7 minutes.

Nearly 13 million homes will be able to order the service, which will set you back £45 per month if bought as a standalone product, or £35 with another Virgin Media bundle. The first areas to get the go ahead are (parts of) London, the South East and Yorkshire, which will ‘propel the country up the global broadband access table.’

Virgin Media’s CEO Neil Berkett says: “The launch of our 100Mb service is a significant milestone in the UK’s broadband evolution and a vivid illustration of the power of our next generation network. The world of possibilities that broadband will enable is set to explode and we’re excited about the innovations we can bring to consumers in the next decade.”

Even the Prime Minister’s chuffed, adding: "We want to see superfast broadband brought to peoples’ homes and businesses right across the country and this exciting news takes us a step closer towards reaching that goal."

LimeWire file-sharing service forced to shut down

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 02:10 AM PDT

Illegal music download haven loses court battle

A US federal court is set close down file-sharing service LimeWire in what will be viewed as a major victory for the music and film industry.

The P2P file-sharing client which allowed users to download music illegally on the internet, must now switch off "the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality, and/or all functionality"

Software downloads for LimeWire will stop immediately, while software already downloaded to computers will be disabled.

The courtroom battle with the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has been ongoing since 2006. In the company's most recent court date in May this year, they were found guilty of mass copyright infringement, with the claim that 93% of content on LimeWire infringed copyright.

LimeWire's parent company Lime Group is expecting to leave the illegal music world behind them with a legal music download service which is due to launch in the next few weeks. Whether they will be able to rack up the reported 50 million unique users a month, we are not so sure.

Facebook campaigners try to shake X-Factor credibility

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 01:45 AM PDT

Facebook users push for shock Christmas number one

Social networking behemoth Facebook is lining up to once again cast doubts over the credibility of the televised talent show X-Factor as users of the social platform create campaign groups for the gimmicky Wagner Carrilho to win the show.

Wagner, a 54-year-old former PE teacher and martial arts expert from Brazil, who has created a stir with his lighthearted, off-key performances, has become a firm favourite with Facebook campaigners who last year swung a seemingly guaranteed Christmas number one out of the grasps of X-Factor winner Joe McElderry, instead gifting it to unlikely recipients, metal band Rage Against the Machine.

With the well publicised success of Facebook campaigners attempt to damage the credibility of the X-Factor brand last year, numerous, pro-Wagner Facebook groups have appeared in the recent weeks as the Brazilian entertainer continues to sail through the reality show’s eliminations despite his woeful, yet amusing performances. Supporters of such campaign groups already number in the thousands.

"If you hate Simon Cowell and want to p*** him off vote Wagner! If you want to help run the X factor into the ground and cause mayhem vote Wagner!" read one such post on the pro-Wagner Facebook campaigns, whilst another social networking activist wrote: 'If you just fancy a really crazy Xmas number 1 this year... vote Wagner!!! If you despise all what the X Factor stands for, vote Wagner!'

What is the best Facebook campaign group that you have seen or started? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Barnes and Noble Nook Color eReader officially announced

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 12:46 AM PDT

Nook Color's backlit touchscreen to be power hungry

US retailer Barnes and Noble has officially announced the release of the much rumoured 7-inch colour eBook reader the Nook Color that will hit stores stateside ahead of the Christmas rush.

Dropping in around the size of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab, Barnes and Noble’s new Nook Color will forgo the power-friendly colour capable Qualcomm Mirasol technology in favour of a standard backlit colour touchscreen display with a 16million colour, 1024x600p resolution.

This visually impressive display comes with its limitations, however, meaning the Nook Color, unlike the latest Amazon Kindle that can go weeks between charges, will have to be recharged after just eight hours of use.

With an inbuilt mono speaker and 3.5mm stereo headphone jack the Nook Color will feature a host of techy delights including storage for more than 6,000 books, expandable via microSD, Wi-Fi connectivity and the ability to share notes and comments on content via social media outlets Facebook and Twitter.

Currently announced only for a US market, eager consumers will be able to pick themselves up a Nook Color and access the company’s expansive eBook store from November 19th for a rather reasonable $249 (£157).

YouTube record broken by Lady Gaga

Posted: 26 Oct 2010 11:30 PM PDT

YouTube fans go gaga for Gaga

Lady Gaga has officially become the first person to rack up more than 1 billion channel views on YouTube.

According to BBC, which quotes internet research company famecount.com, Poker-Face Gaga has 1,002,734,757 views on YouTube. This includes all her uploaded material and not a single video.

She tweeted to almost 7 million followers saying: "We reached one billion views on YouTube little monsters!" And then dubbed them "kings and queens of YouTube".

However, the record for highest number of views on a single video is Justin Bieber's single Baby featuring Ludacris, with 367,793,190 views last we checked and the number is steadily increasing.

Lady Gaga has set records online by becoming the most followed person on Twitter and racked up over 20 million Facebook fans. Justin Bieber's Baby overtook her Bad Romance earlier this year for the most viewed video, so the 16-year-old singer could very well be inching up on breaking her YouTube record someday.

Have you contributed to either Lady Gaga's or Justin Bieber's social media success? Follow T3 on Twitter and Facebook for regular updates in tech world, and check out our YouTube page as well.
