Bold PSP 2 claims surface: That's right, the web's rumour mongerers say that the new PSP 2 is going to be more powerful than the Xbox 360. Is that even possible? Let us know your views. Also, on the theme of the PlayStation/Xbox rivalry, it seems Microsoft agrees that the PS3 Move is a 'great product'. Wow is this a sign of surrender to Sony in the Kinect VS Move war?

Apple closer to domination: From the looks of a very interesting mobile phone sales chart, it seems Apple has overtaken RIM in the battle for the best handset. In celebration they've allowed Pizza Express to install of iPod docks so that customers can listen to personalised music while eating.

Nexus Two spotted: Not expected until November 8th, the Nexus Two has already been spotted. Want to know the details? Then check out the low-down on this new handset. Talking of new, did you know that one in seven Brits are replacing their watches with new technology? Does it really matter what a watch can do as long as it tells the time? The Golden Joystick Awards is the biggest and most popular video games awards in the world, which must make it a true victory and great honour for all people involved in putting together Mass Effect 2.

Wi-Fi on London Underground: Trials begin at Charing Cross

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 08:05 AM PDT

Wi-Fi has been installed in the London Underground, does this mean there's a chance of full underground communication?

BT has made a leap forward in underground mobile communication by installing the first underground Wi-Fi. The new wireless network has been set up in selected stations for a trial basis of six months.

For now only those travelling through Charing Cross will be able to access the network, and even then the connectivity only reaches the ticket hall as well as the Bakerloo and Northern line platforms.

The trial period begins at Charing Cross on November 1st and will be free to all BT broadband customers. It will be free to all mobile phone owners with Wi-Fi connectivity.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, hugely supports this scheme and pledges to make the whole of London a ‘Wi-Fi hotspot’ before the 2012 Olympics inevitably arrive. He's said in the past that he wants every lamp post and bus stop to be a WiFi hotspot.

What do you think about the Wi-Fi in the underground? Is it going to be successful or should they give up before they start? Do we want or need Wi-Fi underground? What about this idea of an almost completely Wi-Fi London in the future? Let us know your views by telling us on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Weird News: Giant iPhone costume, time traveller found

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 06:32 AM PDT

This week's more eccentric tech happenings, in association with Asylum.co.uk

Man creates giant working iPhone costume

Original Halloween costumes are all the rage at the moment but one fanatic has taken his love for iPhones to a new level. John Savio has made himself a giant iPhone costume that actually works like the real thing. Maybe that’s because it’s connected to the real thing...

Handy inventions created by famous people

A surprise is in store, in fact five of them, as revelation strikes that several famous people were responsible for creating some of the world's biggest inventions. From Scuba gear to soft-serve ice cream, check out who’s done what.

Time traveller or director spoof?

A member of the public identified what looks like a woman on a mobile phone in footage from a Charlie Chaplin film. Could this be evidence of time travel, or just an example of crazy people talking to their hands? You decide

Fancy some music with your Pizza?
Pizza Express has began installing iPod docks and sound proof domes in their restaurants. Customers can have a personalised musical experience, allowing them to play their own music and change the lighting in their dome.

Has life on Mars finally been discovered?

NASA has captured pictures of one of their rovers getting stuck in mud on the planet Mars’ surface. The fact that a water based substance exists gives scientists reason to believe that there could be life. Surely with all that empty space you'd think they'd be able to drive around puddles.

Mohican the Robot Bee Slayer

A man in Japan has created the first humanoid robot with the ability to kill wasps. At last. Able to climb ladders and impervious to stings (we didn’t know other robots weren't) the Mohican will sort out all of your insect issues with gusto.

UK trains robot football team

Although the World Cup is finished and England’s chance of winning gone, we might be able to redeem ourselves in the first ever Robot Football World Cup. That’s right, the UK are putting together a team of miniature robots that could still beat Rooney in a game of one-on-one.

Angry Bird costumes fly in for Halloween festivities

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Still stuck on what to wear for Halloween? Check out these imaginative Angry Bird costumes

Halloween is right on our doorstep and new costume ideas are hard to come by these days. So why not try your hand at becoming an Angry Bird this coming weekend as new costumes have been custom made by the guys at TheClockBlog.

The custom Angry Birds costumes are just the latest in a growing list of merchandise based around the phenomenally successful app that since launch on the iPhone has bridged the gap to many other mobile platforms.

Having already made costumes for the Red and Yellow Birds, the pair plans to add the Blue Bird and the Exploding Black Bird to their list before the weekend officially starts. Unfortunately none of the costumes are for sale, so unless they part with their sacred words of wisdom on how to make one (which they have offered to do), the Angry Bird costumes will be out of reach this year.

If you don't have the time, skill or energy to create you and your chums matching Angry Birds outfits for the night of tick-or-treating, Coolingo, publishers of the Angry Birds game have released a Halloween themed version of the game for iPhone and iPad.

Are you going to make your own Angry Bird costume for Halloween? Are characters for game apps the way forward rather than sticking to the old fashion Mario and Luigi? Well let us know what you think or plan to do this Halloween by telling us on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Apple overtakes RIM in global mobile sales

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 05:20 AM PDT

Apple leaves RIM in the dust as the race for mobile sales supremacy

It's great news for Apple as the IDC numbers for the mobile sales charts are in, placing them fourth in the top five.

This new position for the Cupertino company means that RIM has dropped down to fifth place, while Nokia still remains at the top of the chart.

The IDC numbers are taken quarterly, meaning that in the past three months alone Apple have shipped 14.1 million mobile phones around the world, giving them 4.1% of the market share.

People perhaps scoffed at Apple when the company said it would sell 10 million phones in the first year alone, but they are clearly meeting those ambitious targets now.

RIM shipments dropped this quarter to 12.4 million, giving them 3.6% of the market share. Nokia on the other hand sold an amazing 110.4 million handsets leaving them in control of the market with 32.4%,

Will Apple be able to race to the top and beat Nokia? Let us know what you think via Facebook and Twitter.

Microsoft executive: Sony's Move is a "great product"

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 03:17 AM PDT

Kinect vs. Move saga takes an unexpected twist

In an unusual act of kindness, Microsoft’s Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg has doused bitter rivals Sony with praise as he described the Sony PlayStation Move motion controlled gaming peripheral a “great product”.

With the launch of Microsoft’s own motion gaming accessory, the controller-less Kinect now just days away, Greenberg’s unexpected comments came during an interview with Eurogamer in which he proceeded to admit that Sony’s ultra-responsive motion controller has attracted “favourable reviews”.

"First off, it's a great product and the reviews seem to be pretty favourable. But they've targeted it purely to existing owners” said Greenberg. “They've said you can decide whether you want to play existing titles on the platform, like SOCOM, with the controller or with Move.”

On his own company’s attempt at motion domination the Xbox bigwig suggested: “Here's what I think: Move is just a different approach to the market," he said. "We're thinking about Kinect as a key component to the platform.”

"Our approach has been different. We're not going to take Halo, a game you love playing with the controller, and offer you the option to play it with a different interface which may or may not have been designed for that game. We want to build completely unique experiences from the ground up which are designed for Kinect. It's just a different approach."

With the battle of Christmas supremacy set to kick of in the coming weeks, which motion accessory gets your vote, Sony’s PlayStation Move or Microsoft Kinect for the Xbox 360? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Philips Econova 42-inch LED green TV launches

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 03:16 AM PDT

Will it be 2011's Green Gadget of the Year at the T3 Awards?

The race among tech’s biggest manufacturers to become the most environmentally-friendly has become fierce over the past few years, as the world has woken up to climate change, Al Gore and melty ice caps. Philips may have just gone ahead of the curve, though, with its just-launched Econova 42-inch LED TV.

Not only is the set itself made from recycled aluminium, the packaging is totally recyclable and it operates (in eco mode) at only 40W – that’s around a 60 percent energy saving on standard sets. All well and good, but the real eco-trick up the Nova’s sleeve is the remote: it’s totally solar-powered.

Philips says it’s “managed to create a 42-inch LED LCD set which achieves minimal impact on the environment while making no compromise on performance, design, materials and build quality". The 42-inch LED Econav is out now, priced at £1199.

Nexus Two spotted ahead of expected Nov 8th launch

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 02:35 AM PDT

Nexus Two emerges from hiding

The Samsung branded Google Nexus Two has leaked ahead of its expected November 8th unveiling as gadget blog Gizmodo claims to have been given a hands-on experience with the sequel to the original Google handset.

Whilst much expectation is being heaped on the mooted Nexus Two, the Gizmodo reports are suggesting the Galaxy S look-a-like is going to be a somewhat disappointing step back from the Nexus One stating: “It’s not going to rock your face like the Nexus One did.”

The handset, which is reported as being a black glossed plastic device constructed with a slight curve to its design, is reported to sport the same 4-inch AMOLED display as the Samsung Galaxy S with the most notable difference in design being the added front-facing camera. "It feels really similar to the Galaxy S in a lot ways” said those who claim to have been hands-on with the upcoming Android device.

Reported to be running Google’s upcoming Android 3.0 operating system, Gingerbread, albeit a far from finished “really buggy” version, the forthcoming announcement of the Nexus 2 at Samsung’s November 8th press conference should help put these claims and speculation into the realms of reality.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest on the upcoming announcement and release of the Samsung Nexus 2.

PSP 2 to be more powerful than Xbox 360?

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 02:33 AM PDT

More details of the PSP2 surface

The PSP2 speculation is coming thick and fast with the latest claims suggesting the rumoured device will pack a processor which will deliver twice the power of the current Xbox 360 console.

Revealed by 'multiple sources' involved in detailed meetings with Sony at the Tokyo Game Show to talk all things PSP2, the new portable gaming device will apparently feature 1GB of RAM. In comparison to the Xbox 360, which features 512MB of RAM that's some leap in the power department.

Sony's current portable gaming models, the PSP Go and the PSP 3000 both host 64MB of RAM, which is some way behind the 1GB of RAM being touted for the new PSP.

Other details to come from these meetings suggest the PSP 2 will steer clear from resurrecting UMD, with games to be downloaded via memory sticks.

A rear touch panel which looks like a mouse trackpad, dual analog sticks and a bigger display likely to be HD has also been touted.

With intense speculation that a PlayStation Phone is likely to land in the not too distant future, it could be a busy year ahead for Sony.

Pizza Express installs iPod docks and domes in outlets

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 12:00 AM PDT

Pizza Express has decided to introduce a bit of a personalized musical atmosphere to their restaurants. They've installed iPod docks in tables, with sound-proof domes hanging over it too.

T3 has reported that a similar concept was unveiled in Japan a few months ago, but this is the first time we'll be seeing it in Blighty.

Choose your music, lighting and your toppings via the iPod dock. The dome on top is to ensure privacy - your music is kept in and the noise from other tables is kept out.

Apart from the musical and topping-ordering functions, there's also a light feature, which allows diners to either call staff, request the bill or ask to be left alone. You might as well be in your own home, with the amount of interaction with the outside world being cut off drastically with this innovation.

The first iPod dock-and-dome Pizza Express will launch in Richmond, in an experimental 'Living Lab'. Based on customer feedback, other outlets with similar functions can hope to spring up all over the country.

Acoustician Sergio Luzzi and architect Ab Rogers are responsbile for the musical pizza experience.

Are you hungry enough to try the musical Pizza Express in Richmond? Tell us what you think on T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for your regular dose of the tech world.

Nokia N8 used to shoot a short film

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 11:35 PM PDT

Will we see a full length feature being shot on a mobile phone one day?

Nokia is fighting it out to get a space in the smartphone market. With a whole host of smartphones in the market, Nokia is upping the stakes by marketing its N8 model as having a film-quality video camera.

But does it work?

The seven-and-half minute long "The Commuter" stars Dev 'Slumdog' Patel as the hapless commuter whose car gets clamped down accompanied by a host of talent like Charles Dance, Ed Westwick and Pamela Anderson.

The entire short film was shot on the Nokia N8.

Dev Patel says he got involved in the project because of he was interested in the concept of it being shot on a mobile phone. He said: "I'm always interested in embracing new technology in film-making and the main reason I really wanted to get involved with 'The Commuter' was because it was being shot just on mobile phones."

He also added that he hoped the project would inspire and encourage the next generation of filmmakers. "I wanted to encourage the next generation of filmmakers by showing that you don't need expensive equipment and big budgets to make your own movies. The quality of a camera phone, like the Nokia N8 allows filmmakers to produce amazing HD movies and I hope ‘The Commuter’ shows aspirational filmmakers that you can create a great movie even using a mobile phone."

Check out the video here; we trust our readers to be a discerning lot.

After you've seen the video, pop over to Twitter and Facebook and tell T3 what your opinions are. Don't forget to follow us to get your regular dose of tech.

Angry Birds goes up against Cut the Rope: who's winning?

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 11:15 PM PDT

It's an app sales battle! Did anyone see it coming?

Angry Birds and Cut the Rope are two apps which are both published by Chillingo, which techies will remember was recently moved under the wings of EA.

Angry Birds is a successful phenomenon that's spawning its own plush toys - it passed ten million app sales. Cut the Rope, which recently displaced Angry Birds from the app charts number one spot has moved past two million sales.

Here's where it gets slightly complicated. When EA took over Chillingo, any new Angry Birds titles weren't part of the deal. Rovio, the developers behind Angry Bird, self-published the popular 45-levels Angry Birds Hallowe'en soon after Cut the Rope hit the app market.

The new game managed to sell a million copies in six days and is currently on top of the App store chart. The original Angry Birds is is second spot, and Cut the Rope is in third.

With the new Rovio-published game selling the same amount of copies in less than the time Chillingo's Cut the Rope did, the app battle just got interesting.

Whose side are you on? Watch this space for more app updates.

Tell T3 which app is your favourite on our Twitter and Facebook feeds and tune in for regular updates on the app battle and more.

One in 7 Britons replacing watches with new technology

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 10:50 PM PDT

The clock is ticking away...

There used to be a time when watches and clocks were the only way to tell time (unless you could translate the position of the sun into a fairly accurate time of the day!). Batteries ran out? Not to worry, pop in a new one.

However, a survey has come to light which says that almost 15% of British people say they have no reason to wear a watch. With the watch being more of a fashion statement than a time-keeping piece, people usually turn to their mobile phones or other electronic devices to tell the time.

According to research carried out by Mintel, one in seven Brits claim they have no need to wear a watch. Mobile phones or laptops/PCs have replaced them.

It's also the younger Brits who've embraced technology more than watch makers might like: according to the research, those under 25 years of age are twice as likely (28%) to have replaced using a watch with other devices. In addition, 86% of Britishers own watches as compared to 91% who own mobile phones.

Tamara Sender, from Mintel, says: "Many consumers have grown up with technology and are just as likely to associate the notion of checking the time with a mobile handset as with a watch and as they grow older this mindset will accompany them.

She thinks mobile phones could be harmful to watch demand. "Mobile phone ownership is booming and increased usage by all ages could pose a threat to demand for standard watches in the long-term. However, with the popularity of alternative time-pieces, watch manufacturers are focusing on other aspects such as design and the latest technology to keep consumers interested."

Have you decreased usage of your watch and stick to your mobile phone for time-keeping? Head over to T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and tell us. Keep following us and we'll update you with all things tech.
