Tech Week: PSP Phone leaks and white iPhone 4 delays

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
Leaks and spy shots keep gadget fans on the edge of their seats awaiting the next groundbreaking techy delight. This week’s leak supreme came in the form of photos of the heavily rumoured Sony PlayStation Phone. The leak from gadget blog Engadget caused quite a stir in the industry and forced Sony to comment on the existence of such a device. Are you are excited as we are?

On a more disappointing note, Apple’s repeatedly delayed white iPhone 4 has been put back further as the Cupertino company announced that the lighter hued handset will now not arrive until spring of 2011. With the news of yet more delays to the white iPhone 4, speculation began again on the cause of the postponement with latest reports suggesting camera issues. Another product to be hit be repeated delays, Gran Turismo 5 is reported to be getting a release date by the end of the month according to one Sony bigwig.

Tablets have been the talk of tech town over the past few months and this shows no sign of changing anytime soon. This week the market leading Apple iPad was in the news as it emerged one in ten iPad owners has never downloaded a single app for the device. Looking to cash in on the iPad’s success, RIM this week gave the first live demonstration of the working BlackBerry PlayBook as retail giant Toys ‘R’ Us announced it will stock a £90 Android tablet.

Other top news stories this week are a mishmash of celebritydom, big screen classics and the rise of Google’s mobile OS. In respective order, Lady Gaga broke YouTube records this week with more than 1 billion total video plays of the peculiar pop star. Back to the Future celebrated 25 years since launch with the announcement of the BTTF video game due out this year and Google’s Android OS reached a milestone as it topped 100,000 available apps in the Android Market Place. Busy week all-round then.

Everest gets 3G connectivity

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 04:32 AM PDT

Can't talk now, love, there's an avalanche going on.

And you were excited about getting WiFi on the tube.

Swedish telecoms company Ncell has become the first company to put a 3G mast on the tallest mountain in the world, to the presumed relief of would-be mountain climbers everywhere whose lack-of-skill is made up for by possession-of-smartphone.

The company has installed seven towers covering the Himalayas, including one that covers the Everest base camp from a height of 17,000 feet up the 29,029-foot mountain.

The 3G connection will allow local Nepalese inhabitants in the area access to online services from their mobiles, and climbers to scale the peak without lugging satellite phones along for the journey.

Microsoft motion control coming to Windows?

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 03:38 AM PDT

Microsoft's Kinect just the start of motion-based computing

Say what you like about Microsoft Kinect; we've wanted to breeze through T3.com with a swish of the hand since we saw Tom Cruise controlling his computer that way in Minority Report way back in 2002.

Happily, it seems Microsoft feels the same way, announcing yesterday that it has just purchased Silicon Valley-based gesture recognition company Canesta, which makes chips that can allow computers with attached cameras to perceive depth and see in three dimensions. The goal is a more grown-up version of Microsoft's Kinect, which could be used to control your PC without the need for any additional peripherals.

Far from limited to computers, however, Canesta's mission is to put intelligent cameras into all kinds of everyday appliances including cars, televisions and mobiles.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer commented recently that he is "excited to be way out in front and want to push the pedal on [gesture control]". No word on when we expect to ditch the mouse and keyboard on our home computers, but we'll be keeping our ear close to the ground on this one.

Microsoft's current gesture-controlled device, the Kinect for Xbox 360, is racking up critic-defying pre-orders ahead of its November 10th release, with both Amazon and Play having already sold out their launch day stock, despite some early criticism over the device's restrictive set-up requirements.

App Week: SMS spy app banned, WP7 gets Kindle

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 03:00 AM PDT

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

This is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween...
We're sure you've already downloaded the Angry Birds Halloween Edition for some festive fun this spooky season, but how about costumes? There's still time to secure yourself an Angry Birds outfit for the 31st October. Trick or treat.

Text forwarding spy app banned
Speaking of scary apps, it doesn't get more terrifying than this. Until earlier this week the 'Secret SMS Replicator' app for Android was available to down. The app enables a spy (likely a suspect girlfriend) to covertly plant the app on your device, which then forwards all of your texts to her phone. Thankfully common sense prevailed and it was banned. Philanderers rejoice.

WP7 joins the Kindle club
A gaping hole in the new Windows Phone 7 OS has been the lack of an ebook reader app... until now. Microsoft has announced that WP7 will get a dedicated Kindle app before the end of 2010 with up to 725,000 titles available to download.

Android joins the 100,000 club
While it still trails behind the App Store, the Android Market reached a major landmark this week, reaching 100,000 apps. Granted, about 90 per cent of them might be pointless, but still, progress is being made.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

Get the puck out of here!
Yet another top notch sporting outing has made its way to the Apple iPad, this time ice hockey favourite Hockey Nations 2010 gets the tablet treatment. Boasting 14 teams and some fine two player action, our review is definitely worth a look.

SmartRunner hits Samsung
It's about time Samsung Wave owners had some motivation to get off their butts and hit the track. The SmartRunner app we've seen on other platforms has landed on the Bada platform. Using the phones GPS, it tracks distance, calories and speed and allows you to upload your runs to Twitter and Facebook. Read our review of SmartRunner for Bada.

Get your Nando's on...
Who doesn't love a bit of Nando's? A bit of piri-piri chicken on a Saturday night can't be beat. Now Nokia owners can place their order before they get to the Portuguese paradise and send invites to your unelightened buddies. Nando's for Nokia reviewed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab: Early Carphone Warehouse launch

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 02:34 AM PDT

Carphone Warehouse bringing the Samsung Galaxy Tab to customers this Monday at 8am, sharp

Would-be Samsung Galaxy Tab owners are an hour closer today to getting their hands on Sammy's iPad-bothering Android tablet - so long as they pick it up from the Carphone Warehouse. On the day of launch (Monday 1st November), five Carphone Warehouses will open their doors early to appease the expected clamour of customers.

The five Carphone Warehouse branches - which will open as early as 8am - are the 272-274 Oxford Street and Centrepoint Oxford Street stores, the Cornmarket store in Oxford, the Commercial Road store in Portsmouth and the Princesshay store in Exeter.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab will be available to the early birds (and everyone else, for that matter) for £499 with a £10 rolling contract, or £529.99 SIM-free.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab comes packing a 7" multi-touch touchscreen which Samsung claim makes it ideal for use as an e-reader, a 1GHz processor, front and rear-facing cameras and an expandable 16 or 32GB of storage - all at near-as-dammit half the weight of Apple's iPad.

Picking up Samsung Galaxy Tab on November 1st? Be sure to read our three-way tablet showdown first, and let us know what swayed you by e-mail or on Twitter.
