Apple offer $10K gift for 10 billionth app downloader

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 04:40 AM PST

Apple offer cool ten grand US for 10 billionth app downloaded.

Having sold their ten-billionth song on iTunes back in February last year, Apple are continuing the tradition of the $10,000 gift voucher for all things ten billion-related as the number of apps downloaded from the App Store ticks toward the magical 1-and-nine-zeros mark (ok, so it's only an American billion, but still, a thousand million ain't bad).

To be eligible for for the $10K prize voucher you must be 13 years or older and a legal citizen of a participating country. Downloading free apps counts as well, so if you're serious about chasing down the prize there's no need to break the bank.

Currently the counter is at around nine-billion-seven-hundred-and-ninety-thousand, with some 500 apps being downloaded every second (although that will probably increase as the ten billion mark approaches). You can follow the counter at the link below.

Sony PSP phone coming to T-Mobile and Orange

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 04:03 AM PST

More evidence if any were needed that the PlayStation Phone is incoming.

Not to be swayed by petty concerns like the handset's not having even been announced yet, Everything Everywhere (the unholy alliance between Orange and T-Mobile) have apparently already agreed to offer Sony's upcoming Playstation Phone, the Xperia Play, to their customers.

The phone is expected to make an appearance at this year's Mobile World Conference in February, with a public release expected around April. However, a good number of leaks over the past couple of months have betrayed a 4" touchscreen, Android 2.3 OS, a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and an 8MP camera.

Holding out for a PlayStation phone? Let us know via e-mail or on the T3

Wikipedia turns ten years old

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 03:07 AM PST

100,000 pieces of birthday cake for Wikipedia and its contributors.

Ten year's ago, internet entrepreneur Jimmy Wales (whose face we have all recently become acquainted with, prominently displayed as it has been the past few weeks on the Wikipeida appeal banners) set up his open, web-based encyclopedia as an offshoot of closed encyclopedia Nupedia - which has since closed down.

Since Wales' own first post a decade ago ("Hello World"), Wikipedia has amassed roughly 3.5 million articles and 23 million pages in some 270 languages - 17 million of those written in English, with another 1,100 being added per day. The site has around 100,000 regular contributors who keep the content coming - for free, of course.

The Wikipedia model - expecting passionate users to write their own content, rather than paying a group of experts - not only brought far more content than previous encyclopedias (by comparison, the online Encyclopedia Britannica is estimated to have only 120,000 articles), but also flipped the idea of how online ventures of its type might work online; how asking people to work for free might be, in certain circumstances, more effective than offering to pay them.

To celebrate the Birthday, Wikipedia is holding hundreds of events across the globe including talks and edit-a-thons. You can check out a list of all the events on the link below.

App week: Huge Google Goggles and Translate updates

Posted: 15 Jan 2011 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

Google Tanslate now speaks back to you
Google is undeniably leading the way in cool apps for its own Android platform and they don't come much cooler than this. Translate has now had an upgrade that will repeat your English back to you in Spanish (or the other way around). Just speak into the mic and seconds later you've ordered two beers without having to say "Two-o beer-io por favor".

Google Goggles now a sudoku Grandmaster
What a whopper of a week it's been for Google in the apps department. Its see-all, picture-based search app can now solve sudoku puzzles just by scanning the grid and filling in the blanks. Any chance of an assist with tonight's Lottery numbers?

First Direct app for transfers and payments
Banking apps are usually only good for one thing; Checking stuff. So if you're out of pennies and need to get home you're pretty much screwed. Now you can use the First Direct app to move money between accounts, make payments and transfer cash. It's the first UK banking app to replicate some of the key advantages of online banking.

Shazam and Spotify team-up
We love it when two tech giants collide in the name of awesomeness and that's exactly what has happened with Shazam and Spotify. The music-tagging service will now give you the option to listen to the full track on Spotify, if you're a premium subscriber. Bravo, Sirs.
