HTC Desire 2? Leaked photos suggest that Taiwanese phone giants HTC are working on an update to the Desire as well as a button-less smartphone after several images have been circulating of possible HTC models. Instead of waiting for Apple to make one and seemingly being bored of the stock black appearance, one iPhone user made his own see-through casing.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced via Twitter that he was to step down from his post and allow Larry Page to take his place citing his reason as the company no longer needing “day-to-day adult supervision”. The Motorola Xoom, described as being ‘pure Google’ is to don a ‘premium’ price to reflect its status as a ‘premium device’ according to Motorola’s Marketing VP.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz 2 leaked and previewed

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 10:04 AM PST

Sony Ericsson's Vivaz follow-up gets a pre-release pawing.

While the award for most leaked mobile lineup of the month can go to no-one but BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson takes an easy silver, first with the leaks of their PSP Phone, and now with this: the thus far unannounced Vivaz 2.

The prying eyes in question belong to champion leakers of upcoming smartphones mobile-review.com, which as is traditional included not just photos but a massive breakdown of the handset's features.

According to the site's reviewer Martin Elm, the follow-up to the underwhelming Vivaz is "a little bigger, thicker and heavier", which apparently makes the handset more balanced and feel sturdier. At just under four inches, the screen has been enlarged and the resolution bumped up to 480x854 pixels, too.

Another high point on the Vivaz 2 is reportedly the camera; an 8MP snapper with touch-to-focus and face detection, as well as an LED flash. Mobile-review.com also have good things to say about the video recording ability, remarking that its transition between light and dark while recording is smooth, and the framerate high.

So, will this bang of the Vivaz drum work out better than Sony's disappointing previous attempt? Well, let's wait until it's at least announced before we speculate, shall we?

Amazon back music industry's global copyright scheme

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 09:28 AM PST

New music industry scheme to strip out 100 million euros worth of bureaucracy.

New media services rejoice: a collection of big players in the music industry are reportedly working on a new copyright scheme that will make artists' work easier to license across platforms including mobiles, websites and online streaming services.

Under the current system, whenever a track is played commercially, money has to go to each writer who took part in the track's creation, but currently no definitive database exists linking all artists and publishers to their respective tracks. Without this information, new media services looking to play music have a difficult job finding out who in the industry they owe how much to keep their service on the right side of the law.

"One of the complexitites for a new service is people say they don't know who to pay", says Neil Gaffney, Executive Vice President at EMI Music Publishing UK. "[The new system] gets rid of one of the fundamental issues and means we can turn our attention to those people who use music illegally."

Backers of the new system include Amazon, Apple, Universal Music Publishing and EMI. The database of music, created by consultancy firm Deloitte, is hoped to be up and running within two years.

Poet Robert Burns' complete works in free iPhone app

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 08:28 AM PST

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind, download it for your iPhone.

The Scottish Government has launched a free iPhone app featuring the complete works of National Bard Robert Burns.

The app provides instant access to 550 of Burns' published poems, writings and love songs in a searchable database including famous works like 'To A Mouse' and 'Auld Lang Syne', which most of us have probably never heard in a sober state.

There's also tips on how to host your own Burns Supper, a tradition stretching back to his death in 1796. Naturally, it's just scotch whiskey and haggis, but you'll need to learn about the toasts and speeches to make it more than your average breakfast meal in Aberdeen.

Scotland's Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop said: "His legacy is of incalculable value to Scotland and the country’s image abroad. This app uses the very latest technology to bring Burns firmly into the 21st century, with his enduring messages of human equality and international brotherhood now available to iPhone users the world over."

"This app will appeal to existing admirers of Burns and make his poetry available to a whole new audience. It is a great platform to promote his work on the international stage"

The app launch ties in with the opening of the Robert Burns Birthplace museum Alloway, Scotland.

One in five mobiles sold are dodgy copies, says Nokia

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 08:22 AM PST

Fake handset producers take a huge bite out of mobile manufacturers' profits.

Their rarity in the West might make them something of a novelty news item for us, but according to Nokia - the world's top producer of mobile phones - unlicensed Chinese tinkerers are robbing legitimate mobile makers of a whopping fifth of the world market with their counterfeit handsets.

"It is mostly China-originated [sic]", said a Nokia executive, "but it is global. It is not only in Asia, but also Latin America and even in some parts of Europe".

The 20% market share now held by the producers of the cheap knock-offs is in no small part down to their ability to rush a fake lookalike product to market sometimes just weeks after the genuine article's announcement. As we saw with our current top bit of tech tat, the "iPed", getting the look right and the product to market first matters a lot more than worrying about, say, running the correct operating system.

Weird News: Eau de Microsoft and Gillette 80-blade razor

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:40 AM PST

This week's more eccentric goings in in the tech world

Microsoft VP's Money Perfume
The sweet smell of success could be yours in a bottle. Microsoft Vice-President of Sales Patrick McCarthy has come up with a fragrance for both men and women with the smell of money. Now not only will you look a million dollars, you smell it too.

No way Segway
After a chap from Barnsley was fined £75 for using his Segway, the gyroscopic lazy-man’s transportation device is now banned from being used on the UK’s pavements and roads. Now restricted to private land, owners will have to settle for using their segways to patrol their lawns instead.

Logitech wireless ‘sofa’ mouse
Sometimes checking emails or tweeting can be taxing but for those who are energetically challenged Logitech have a mouse that works on more-or-less any surface. So now you can sit back, relax and check your emails without having to lean across a laptop of get up and sit at your desk. And, the batteries last for two years.

US Navy creates ‘raygun’
Taking gaming into the real world, the US Navy have come up with an idea for a ‘superlaser’ as seen on games such as Fallout and Destroy All Humans.

Bottoms Up: Super fast beer dispenser
You’re at the match or a festival but the queue for the beer is taking too long and the staff aren’t exactly in a rush. Sound familiar? Well, it seems like GrinOn industries have issue with a slow-moving beer line too so came up with their own innovative ‘Bottom’s Up’ method that can fill 56 beers in under a minute.

Electricfoxy music jacket
The concept of clothing being able to control your gadgets has been given a new look. Electricfoxy has come up with a jacket that controls your iPod’s functions using only the zip, the volume for example. On a cold day, with the jacket zipped up you can enjoy your favourite songs at full volume. However, if it’s warmer you’ll have to settle for low volume or sweating it out until the track finishes.

And finally...

Gillette’s 80 blade razor
Not content with 3 blades? Not a clean enough shave after 4 or even 5? Well Gillette have poked fun at themselves by suggesting that an 80-blade razor might just do the trick. The following video comes ahead of the launch of the Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor which unless it sports at least a dozen blades will leave us wanting more.

Nintendo 3DS UK price for retailers just £173

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 06:45 AM PST

UK retailers push 3DS price up

Nintendo’s upcoming glasses-free 3D portable games console the 3DS is to be purchased by UK retailers for just £173 per device before being sold on to customers for a £50 profit per unit.

Officially announced to touch down in Europe on March 25th with UK prices coming in at around the £230 mark, retailers are set to mark up the innovative 3D device by almost 33 per cent from what one supermarket rep reportedly described as a ‘base price’ of £173.

Available for pre-order from a number of retailers now, Nintendo has revealed that it plans to ship just under a million Nintendo 3DS console to European markets in time for launch day with the 10 launch day titles being added to in the following weeks to meet the 25 titles by June promise the gaming giant made at the device’s European unveiling.

Despite much consumer and industry outcry about the 3DS’s high UK price tag, Nintendo has defended its position with the company’s UK Marketing Manager James Honeywell announcing: “We think that we can bring 3D to the mass market, to a wider audience, and really explode it out and that's why people will want it. Anyone that wants the latest and best experience will want the 3DS."

Honeywell added: : “We actually think that's actually a pretty good price. We think it's kind of affordable when you compare it with other 3D experiences.”

What do you think to the Nintendo 3DS’s seemingly lofty price tag? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Desire 2 image spotted?

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 06:19 AM PST

Nexus One Mini-lookalike also China-bound

The HTC 2011 roadmap may be leaking before our eyes with images surfacing which suggest the Desire-makers could be working on a Desire 2 and a button-less smartphone.

- HTC Desire 2 picture

- HTC button-less smartphone picture

- HTC Nexus One Mini picture  (A3380)

Pocketnow stumbled across the images that show a handset which appears to sport a front facing camera, more rounded edges than previous HTC devices and a redesigned ear piece.

Another picture shows a button-less device with Verizon and HTC branding. The latest find closely follows an image found in the files of a recent update to HTC Sync, and while this could of course be the work of some Photoshop trickery, it seems odd to have included the branding.

Pocketnow had also stumbled across a further image that they initially suspected could be a Nexus One Mini-style smartphone, but the device has since been spotted on HTC's Chinese website under the model name A3380.

The mid-range smartphone which looks set to be launched through China Mobile, runs on Android 2.2 and boasts Wi-Fi, GPS and a 2.8-inch QVGA screen with 240x320 pixel resolution.

Button-less smartphones have been talked about for some time, and it is believed that Steve Jobs initially wanted the iPhone to follow that very design format. Judging from these images (if they turn out to be the real deal), the Cupertino company are not the only ones thinking of ditching the buttons.

Apple patent unveils future perihperal

Ever the future tech tease, Apple has filed a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office outlining what appears to be a wireless mouse with in-built touchscreen display.

Entitled a “Computer Input Device Including a Display Device” the mouse-bound touchscreen display is reported to feature multiple uses as either a simple information display or a customisable contextual input device.

Motorola Xoom UK price to be 'premium'

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 03:43 AM PST

Motorola Xoom packing dual-core Android Honeycomb winds up the tension

The world's first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet, the Motorola Xoom, is to be priced at a 'premium' according to Motorola.

The dual-core Motorola Xoom is due to launch in Q1 in the US.

Speaking to T3 at a Motorola Xoom briefing Andrew Morley VP Marketing, Motorola, said: "It's clearly a premium device…and premium means it's going to cost too… we're pretty confident from all the research we've done that the price we're going to launch it at will be competitive."

Interestingly, Morley also hinted at additional wireless potential: "WiFi version is not announced, but that would be an interesting development".

The Motorola Xoom tablet was still being closely guarded at the event, but Dave Burke, Engineering Manger, Google, gave us a few more insights into the Xoom.

Google likes to partner with an OEM each time it releases a new operating system to create a 'lead device' and (following Samsung with the Nexus S for Android 2.3) for Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the hardware partnership is with Motorola. So you can forget rumours of other Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets - sure they may (or may not) happen, but the lead Android 3.0 product is the Xoom, which is the first dual-core processor piece of hardware Google has focused on.

When you first see Honeycomb it is massively different to previous Google interfaces, it's cleaner and slicker, as Burke puts it 'inspired by the sea.' Surprisingly the Xoom doesn't run Motoblur, Motorola's excellent social networking skin. Instead it's vanilla Android 3.0. Google's Dave Burke described it as being "pure Google as you you'll get at the moment".

T3 did get confirmation that over time Motoblur will be available on the tablet, with the Motorola Xoom supporting over-the-air upgrades as well.

The Motorola Xoom is set to be one of the most exciting products of the year, but does the premium pricing put you off? Join the debate on Facebook and Twitter.

Eric Schmidt replaced by Larry Page as Google CEO

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 03:18 AM PST

But was his cheeky tweet in reference to a 2001 interview?

Eric Schmidt has stepped down as CEO of Google, moving to Executive Chairman as of April 4th, at which point co-founder Larry Page (the one that isn’t Sergei Brin) will become CEO of one of the world’s most successful companies.

Schmidt joined Google in 2001, to help out the two co-founders and bring some business acumen to the table when they were still relatively fresh out of university. At the time, Brin was quoted in an interview as saying that Schmidt was being brought in for “Parental supervision,” which is something the soon to be ex-CEO referenced with a parting tweet.

Explaining his career change to the Twitterverse, Schmidt posted the very tongue-in-cheek: “Day-to-day adult supervision no longer needed!” Whether that’s true or not, Larry Page will soon have the task of running one of the world’s tech superpowers. Lets hope he knows what he’s letting himself in for…

Nintendo 3DS launch not threatend by PSP2 arrival

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 03:09 AM PST

Imminent PSP2 arrival no concern to Nintendo

Nintendo has rubbished reports it fears the arrival of the PSP2 later this year announcing the “unique” 3DS launched in Amsterdam earlier this week will forge new directions in the portable gaming market.

Given a UK arrival date of March 25th with prices coming in around the £229 mark, the Nintendo 3DS is the first portable games console to sport a glasses-free 3D display for extra-dimensional gaming on the move.

Speaking on the 3DS’s European launch, Nintendo UK boss David Yarnton announced the company was happy with its 2011 offering and stated: "We don't look at opposition. They'll do what they've got to do. We've got the 3DS which offers something unique."

On the potentially imminent arrival of Sony’s PSP2 and the threat this could pose to 3DS sales, Yarnton added: "There's always stuff happening in the marketplace but I think we've got our hands pretty full with the product we've got which has so much there to offer. We're quite happy with the place we're at.”

It was rumoured earlier this month that the second generation Sony PlayStation Portable will be officially announced during a special press conference in Tokyo later this month on January 27th.

Which portable games console would you rather own, the 3DS or the PSP2? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

See-through iPhone 4 revealed as white model delayed

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 02:26 AM PST

White iPhone 4 beaten by clear model

Following news that the white iPhone might finally be heading into stores on February 27th, one impatient Apple fan has unveiled his own iPhone 4 adaptation sporting a completely see-through shell.

The latest case modification has built on the custom white iPhone kits available trading out the iPhone 4’s gloss black front and rear sections for a sheer, clear, completely transparent counterpart putting the device’s innards on show for all the world to see.

- Click here for more images of the clear iPhone 4

Sadly Apple’s classic and enviable design skills have not been extended to the innards of the iPhone with fans looking to give their Apple blowers and see-through makeover being offered a view of a black mass of covered electronics and a battery.

Having hit the UK back June the black iPhone 4 was expected to land alongside a white counterpart. Sadly the lighter-hued model has been struck by repeated delays and mysteriously unexplained postponements. Earlier this week it emerged the white iPhone 4 could be heading for release next month after Vodafone Germany and Best Buy in the US leaked imminent launch information.

What colour of finish would you like to see rocked by the iPhone 4? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the White iPhone 4 arrival.

News@8pm: iPad 2 release date and rival HTC tablet

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

iPad 2 release date: Speculation of the forthcoming iPad 2's features has been rife and now the arrival of the second instalment of Apple's market-leading tablet is imminent, quite possibly February 9th. Already Apply watcher John Gruber has quashed any talk of the iPad 2 having a Retina Desiplay with his sources suggesting the display will remain at 1024x768. However, a dual-camera inclusion for the iPad 2 has been outed thanks to further icon-based evidence, namely iOS 4.3 Beta 2 model.

Windows Phone 7’s phantom data problems were solved after it was revealed a “third party” service was responsible for users being charged for excessive monthly data use. HTC announced that its 7 Pro and Gratia will be released in the UK next month with both the Windows Phone 7 powered handsets available on our shores as early as February.

HTC tablet unveiling: The makers of the Legend and Desire could be the latest company to delve in to the tablet market after rumours of an unveiling of the HTC Flyer at MWC next month ahead of a March release. Danish designer Kristian Ulrich Larsen has flexed his muscles with a jaw-dropping malleable Flip Concept phone that would allow users to transform the tri-purpose phone into a tablet-like device and a palm pilot-style sliding gadget from a smartphone.

Samsung ST series cameras: Samsung have released a new line of budget-friendly cameras with their cheapest, the £89 ST30 ‘party camera’, designed for those candid moments when out on the town. On the other end of the scale there’s the range topping £200 ST6500 which will boast 16 megapixals, 720p HD videoing and built in photo editing.
