Tech Week: PSP 2 officially unveiled as NGP and iPhone

Posted: 29 Jan 2011 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
Whilst we all had our ears cocked to the ground in search of the long-awaited PSP Phone Sony has only gone and fooled us by officially unveiling the PSP 2 or the Sony Next Generation Portable (NGP) as it will henceforth be known. Following the unveiling we have been treated to a bevy of PSP 2, sorry NGP, information with the first official pictures emerging ahead of a full control demonstrating video hands-on landed. We have also learnt that not all NGP consoles will support 3G connectivity, we’ve heard theexpert verdicts on the PSP 2 replacement and, although official prices have yet to be released, Sony has declared the device won’t cost $599.

Samsung is expected to be one of the big players at next month’s Mobile World Congress attempting to emulate last year’s success of the Android powered Galaxy S handset and Galaxy Tab tablet. Kicking off the week by unveiling four new members of the Galaxy smartphone family and teasing the possible MWC arrival of the Galaxy Tab 2. This was followed later in the week by a leaked conference timetable confirming the Barcelona launch of the Galaxy Tab 2 and Galaxy S 2 as well as official word that the Galaxy S 2 will come equipped with a dual-core processor and Super AMOLED Plus display.

With The Daily iPad newspaper this week confirmed to officially launch on February 2nd, Apple has this week mostly made headlines for the upcoming iPhone 5. Whilst three new job vacancies within the Cupertino company hinting towards iPhone 5 NFC technology inclusion, news that Apple intends to ship 10 million of the mooted handsets at launch has stolen the headlines and much of the focus of a possible arrival date.

Reviews of the Week
For anyone that appreciates design in their tech, this is a coupling that makes the pulse race. B&O’s achingly stylish products share an aesthetic with Apple’s own gear, so it’s fitting that they are together at last in this sophisticated-looking sound system. Full review right here for your envious eyed perusal.

Sony’s 40-inch KDL-40NX713 is a delicious Freeview HD LED TV that, although not positioned at the top of the brand’s extensive line-up delivers a sumptuous picture performance more than good enough to get a five-star nod of approval from the T3 reviewers.

Adding an extra punch to the already weighty reviews offering this week we have been hands-on with the LG Optimus 2X, the world’s first dual-core processor touting mobile handset. Not only have we been hands-on we’ve been video-on too allowing you to see our first opinions of the device in all its HD glory.

Hyperhighway broadband project gets £7.2m award

Broadband project gets a 7.2 million pound boost

A project based at the University of Southampton has been given a £7.2m injection by the government in order to revolutionise the internet.

The project, called Photonic Hyperhighway, plans to harness the speed of light and apply that to the internet. It will develop a way to eradicate bottlenecks.

The leader of the project, Professor David Payne said, "Now is the time to look ahead to develop the UK infrastructure of the future." The project wants to reduce energy waste by replacing heavy duty electronic switches with photonic ones that can route light itself.

The grant proposal says the new system could improve the performance of the internet infrastructure by 1000 times.

David Willetts, the Minister for Universities and Science, announced the £7.2m award, and said, "The Photonics HyperHighway project has the potential to truly revolutionise the internet, making it much faster and more energy-efficient."

App week: Android PlayStation suite, iPlayer finally on iPad?

Posted: 29 Jan 2011 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

PlayStation Suite for Android incoming
The one thing the App Market is missing is some top of the range mobile games, and that's where Sony comes in. Following the launch of the new NGP (PSP 2) the gaming giant is also readying a host of PSP and PSOne classics for Android handsets. There'll also be new 'PlayStation Certified' games thrown into the mix.

The Daily finally arriving next Wednesday?
It better be good, that's all we can say. After months waiting to make its debut on the virtual shelves of the App Store, it appears The Daily could finally land this Wednesday 2nd February. The digital newspaper is a collaboration between Apple and News International and will deliver an edition to your iPad everyday. It's thought to have a price point of 99p a day.

Dead Space on your iPhone
No, we're not talking about a flash memory failure but of the arrival of the popular PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 horror game on the App Store. The gory, survival thriller brings new levels and new weapons along with a code to unlock new content on the forthcoming console sequel

iPlayer on iOS within a month
You think you had it bad with the wait for The Daily? The BBC announced iPhone and iPlayer apps over a year ago. We could finally be approaching the endgame with reports that the Beeb will launch the apps to coincide with the departure of the project head who spearheaded their development. Lets hope so, it's why many people bought the iPad in the first place.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play gets a thorough preview

Posted: 29 Jan 2011 02:30 AM PST

Getting up close and personal with the PlayStation phone.

The Xperia Play, also known as the PlayStation phone, has been previewed ahead of its expected MWC launch.

Engadget has managed to get its hands on the Xperia Play and has treated everyone with a thorough look at the phone.

The phone has Android 2.3 Gingerbread buzzing under its head, with a 4-inch multitouch LCD. The interesting aspect of the phone - gaming - was tested using PSOne and GameBoy Advance emulators as there were no official games on the prototype phone that was previewed.

The preview seemed positive, but we're curious as well as to how the gaming purchases will work for the Xperia Play. We don't have a pricing on the phone yet, so here's hoping all our questions are answered at MWC.

Follow T3 via our Twitter and Facebook feeds for the latest in tech, and stay tuned in during MWC for more updates on the Xperia Play.
