Intel Windows 8 bomb: Intel  has hinted at putting Windows 8 into smartphones by insisting that their lowest-powered processors are capable being integrated onto a phone. CEO of Intel Paul Otellini described such a feat as “an upside opportunity”. Meanwhile, currently in the world of mobile phones, Samsung have announced that February 13th and MWC will see something big from the makers of the Galaxy S with the latest additions being dual-core.

The white iPhone 4 is on it’s way according to Vodafone Germany and Best Buy after an accidental unveiling revealed that the long awaited edition is available from February 27th. Sticking with Apple for a moment, stand-in chief of the California-based revolutionaries Tim Cook has dismissed the threat of Android tablets labelling them as ‘vapor’.

Two tablet models from HP/Palm will be launched this year with an official announcement on their webOS models expected on February 9th. Both the codenamed items, 7-inch ‘Opal’ and 9-inch ‘Topaz’, will be button-less after leaked photos revealed their look. However, new tablets could spell the end of netbooks or at least Acer’s after the Taiwan-based company revealed plans to phase netbooks out in exchange for tablets.

Nintendo 3DS: hands-on at the European launch

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 10:12 AM PST

3D gaming, Jonathan Ross, and more

The Nintendo 3DS is set to “change gaming,” according to Laurent Fischer, marketing director of Nintendo Europe. And based on our hands-on experience at the launch event, we’d say that looks quite possible.

Jonathan Ross hosted the event, confirming the specs in a rehearsed exchange with Fischer. “The screen looks bigger than on my Dsi,” said Ross. “Yes, it’s 10 percent bigger,” countered Fischer. “And I’d like it to be backwards compatible so I can play all my old games on it, will that be possible?“ said Ross. And so it went on, confirming a lot of what we already knew as well as throwing a couple of surprises into the mix.

Spot Pass and Street Pass seem strange features, looking to “build communities,” according to Fischer. The idea of fighting battles in Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition every time you pass someone on the street without even knowing it may gain you points, but it looked a little pointless to us. Surely the whole fun is in having the fight?

The only confirmed TV offerings through Spot Pass were Eurosport 3D (a strange choice for Nintendo’s diehard fan boys), and a series of one minute episodes of Aardman Animation’s Shaun The Sheep, which, the studio’s founder David Sproxton said, would arrive at the end of the year.

The Mii Maker feature promises to be more like on the Wii, and a new E-shop should offer up a selection of GameBoy Color classics for you to get your teeth into. Not that you should be bored anytime soon, with an impressive 25 games announced between the console‘s launch on March 25th and the E3 games expo in June.

So how do these first titles fare? We had a blast on a few and have to say despite our initial scepticism, we’re very impressed. Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition stood out from the pack, thanks to its Dynamic Mode, which switches the camera angle from flat-on 2D to an over the shoulder view. The controls remain the same, but it adds a whole new immersive element to the gameplay. Rabbids was a standard side-scrolling platformer that, while not really benefiting from 3D, was decent enough, while Nintendogs and Cats (now with added cats!) unexpectedly made us chuckle, as a pooch came running out of the screen at us wanting our attention.

The 3D slider bar on the side is also a neat addition, letting you vary the degree of 3D in your game. Slide it to the top and you’re well into the third dimension (a bit much for us at first, looking like the kind of thing that’d give us a headache after half an hour or so), then you can reduce it all the way down to standard 2D. To start with somewhere in the middle was optimum, but as we got used to 3D so close and on such a small screen, pushing it to the top proved the most immersive.

An augmented reality game in which you shoot target coming out of a card placed on the table was also a lot of fun, and proved that while augmented reality has gone a bit quiet of late following last year’s hoohah, it can be used in an entertaining way. But some of the most highly anticipated games were demos only, behind glass. So we didn’t get to experience Mario Kart or Pilotwings Resort first hand, though from what we saw they look to be welcome refreshes to the classic titles.

So, all in all an impressive show from Nintendo. The 3DS shows 3D can work on a handheld, making portable gaming more immersive, though it does come at quite a hefty price. The question is, will the 3D be enough to tempt customers away from Kinect and the feted PSP Phone? Stay tuned to T3.com for a full review soon.

Segways banned from UK pavements as man fined £75

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 09:09 AM PST

Segways come under Judge's fire

Segways, the geek-loving gyroscopic utilising transportation device previously tipped to change the way city dwellers travelled can no longer legally be ridden on British roads or pavements, a judge’s ruling has decreed.

Deemed by District Judge Michael Rosenberg as a motor vehicle under the Highways Ace of 1835, Segways, which are capable of speeds up to 12 mph are barred for UK roads having failed to comply with a number of road traffic laws and under new rulings cannot be taken on pavements.

Now limited to private land, the future use of the personal transportation vehicles lays in the balance following Judge Rosenberg’s ruling and prosecution of Segway user Phillip Coates who spotted by a civilian police inquiry officer riding his Segway on a Barnsley walkway late last year. Coates, who was fined £75 plus £250 costs and a £15 victim surcharge, was deemed by Judge Rosenberg to have: "wilfully rode a motor vehicle, namely a Segway, upon a footpath or causeway by the side of the road, made or set apart for the use or accommodation of foot passengers."

The Judge added: "In my judgement, the conclusion must be that general use on the roads is to be contemplated. Although this is by no means an easy matter to determine, I am inexorably driven to the conclusion that I am satisfied to the required standard that the Segway is a motor vehicle and the allegation is therefore proved."

Sixth national TV channel to be added to terrestrial roster

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 07:46 AM PST

Jeremy Hunt to unveil new Channel 6

British Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt is expected to unveil plans for a new sixth national terrestrial television station, new reports have revealed.

Proclaimed as the “spine” to British broadcasting, the mooted channel 6 is expected to feature a flurry of national content interspersed with local and regional broadcasts with area specific advertising making the venture financially viable.

With plans believed to be formally revealed during the Oxford Media Convention today, Hunt has declared that the new channel will be "One that will sit alongside other public service broadcasters, offering a new voice for local communities, with local perspectives that are directly relevant to them."

As well as joining the ranks of terrestrial television Hunt intends to introduce new legislation that would see the sixth public service broadcasting station take follow the previous five on the EPG of Freeview, BSkyB and Virgin Media services.

Speaking on this potential bullyboy tactic Hunt said: “The government wants to see a market-based solution emerge and is prepared to exercise its available powers and facilitate the right conditions to incentivise the market.”

The addition national channel could start broadcasting as early as 2012 with up to 10 local TV services producing content. Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest.

Nintendo 3DS UK release date and price announced

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 07:34 AM PST

Glasses-free 3D portable games console dated for UK arrival

The long awaited glasses-free 3D portable gaming device, the Nintendo 3DS, will land in the UK on March 25th with prices to be decided by retailers gaming giant Nintendo has revealed.

Originally announced at E3 last year, the 3DS will be available in Cosmos Black or Aqua Blue colour forms with the pocket-friendly 3D gaming device to feature a 3.5-inch specs-less 3D display further enhanced by dual rear-facing cameras allowing for 3D snaps that can enable automated Mii maker.

Officially dated at the European grand unveiling in Amsterdam, Nintendo has confirmed that the ground breaking 3DS will be supported by a minimum of 25 3D game releases by June with a full catalogue of titles featuring releases to whet the appetites of a wide variety of gaming fans.

Joining the pre-announced likes of Nintendogs and Mario Kart a number of developers appeared on stage in Amsterdam to announce their opening 3DS launches. Pick of the gaming crop was the Konami offering of PES 2011 3D and the Capcom confirmation of Street Fighter IV in 3D.

Thrust users into the immersive world of 3D gaming PES 2011 3D will use an adapted camera angle allowing for a more personalised gaming experience taking gamers down to pitch-level instead of watching the action from a TV style broadcast camera.

Nintendo and a number of developers were keen to express the connectivity options of the 3DS with SpotPass and StreetPass features highly touted. Whilst SpotPass will allow the console to wirelessly and remotely connect to BT fon Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK allowing users to receive game related notifications and data as well as 3D video content from EuroSport and, in the future, Sky 3D, StreetPass will allow 3DS users to share and interact with each other remotely, exchanging gamer information with fellow 3DS users they pass in the street. Whilst Mii character exchange can show what country or region fellow 3DS users are from as well as the last software they used the exchange is a switch on service not required by privacy conscious users.

Announced for launch in the US days after its European arrival, Stateside gamers will be able to snap up the 3DS on March 27th priced $249.99. Although Nintendo declared UK retailers will decide upon the consoles retail price HMV is currently offering the 3DS for pre-order priced £229.99.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest hands-on, reviews and pricing information on the 3DS.

Uncensored Playboy app to launch for iPad in March

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 06:01 AM PST

Playboy to bare all with Apple's blessing?

Is the most prudish tech company on the planet about to expose the world's most famous 'rhythm pamphlet' in all its glory? According to Hugh Hefner, Playboy magazine will be appearing uncensored on the App Store when March rolls around.

Playboy HD, the digital version of the magazine, launched on the iPad back in August with no nudity, just tactically placed clothing, cropping and those highly-acclaimed feature articles that have always provided a good cover for readers.

But now, something has changed. According to Hefner's latest tweets, you'll be able to download the full, uncensored edition of Playboy magazine within the next couple of months. He tweeted: "Playboy - both old and new - will be available on iPad in March," before adding "Playboy will be uncensored."

It would be a surprising development. Apple has planted a giant flag atop of the moral high ground with Steve Jobs declaring war on porn in a bit to rid it from his devices. Hefner, however, doesn't consider Playboy to be porn, just 'erotica' so maybe they've been able to come to some sort of compromise?

Is Apple relaxing its stance on nudity? Can we expect some of the more risque apps to be given clearance on the App Store?

Intel hints at Windows 8 - end of Windows Phone 7?

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:32 AM PST

Chipmaker Intel drops Windows 8 bomb...

Intel has unveiled plans to put Windows 8 onto smartphones, potentially replacing Windows Phone 7.

In a startling leap, the chipmaker’s CEO Paul Otellini let slip that Windows 8 was in his sights.

“We have the ability to put our lowest-power Intel processors running Windows 8, or “next-generation Windows,” into phones, because it’s the same OS stack. And I look at that as an upside opportunity for us”, he told reporters.

So where does that leave Windows Phone 7? Well, don’t panic right now – Intel is yet to put out a mobile-targeted chip, and Microsoft will be keen to keep its mobile baby ecosystem unfragmented for at least a short while.

MWC 2011 rumours: Samsung to unveil dual-core handsets

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 03:04 AM PST

Something big is coming February 13th Samsung proclaim

Following the fleet of dual-core handsets showcased at CES 2011, Samsung is to unveil a dual-core mobile device of its own at the upcoming Mobile World Congress, new reports suggest.

With a number of Samsung devices including the Samsung Galaxy Ace, also known as the Galaxy S Mini, already peeping from the shrouds of secrecy ahead MWC 2011, the Galaxy S creator has teased its upcoming unveiling announcing “February 13th. Something big is coming.”

Teased via the official Samsung Unpacked website, the imminent MWC announcement is being touted by Sammy as “the next evolution in Samsung Mobile” with a graphic of a mystery device proclaiming “EVOLUTION is FATE” alongside the Samsung Galaxy S, the company’s hugely popular Android powered hit from the past year.

Whilst little is currently known about the mystery device, Samsung has declared it will offer a preview teaser of the product on February 1st ahead of a February 13th unveiling in Barcelona.

Much speculation surrounds how Samsung will follow its 10 million plus unit selling Galaxy S hit with the dual-core path looking the most likely option. Speaking at CES earlier this month, President of Samsung Mobile, J K Shin, reported announced: “We will continue to keep our technology leadership this year. In terms of dual-core applications, we already have a program, and next month at Mobile World Congress we will unveil it.”

What would you like to see Samsung churn out for the upcoming Mobile World Congress? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest live from the company’s Barcelona press conference.

HP/Palm webOS tablet: two models coming in 2011

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 03:02 AM PST

Topaz and Opal tablets both set for late 2011 launch, with announcement coming on 9 February.

HP and Palm will at last reveal all about their webOS tablet plans at a special event on 9 February. And what’s more, full details of what we can expect have already been leaked, along with an internal render of a webOS slate, which you can see right here.

The Pre makers are plotting two tablets, a 7-incher called Opal and a 9-incher dubbed Topaz. Shonky codenames aside, these both promise to be absolute stunners, with 1.2GHz processors, with LTE baked in for Stateside data lovers.

There are no buttons on either model, with three speakers, USB support and a front-facing camera for video chat. As you can see, the pic of the Topaz is stunning, and we certainly can’t wait to get our mitts on one.

But there is some bad news. Engadget has it that units won’t show up at HP until summer, with neither the Topaz or Opal likely to launch until September. Is that too late for HP to take on the iPad and Android Honeycomb? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

White iPhone 4 landing 27 February?

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 02:12 AM PST

Best Buy listing follows Vodafone Germany's unintentional unveiling.

Still jonesing for a white iPhone 4 despite delays that would make even London Underground blush? Well step this way, because more tidbits about the brightly-hued Apple blower have just landed online.

After Vodafone Germany listed the phone in its inventory, now Best Buy has followed suit over in the States, with two listings for the phone. One is for the 16GB model, the other, unsurprisingly, for the 32GB model. Both claim the white iPhone 4 will be up for grabs on 27 February.

It’s been noted that the listings are exactly the same as one’s posted by Best Buy in summer 2010 when it began pre-orders for the device, only for Apple to say it wasn’t available.

We’ve come this close before to a white iPhone 4 release, so don’t go holding your breath. And with the iPhone 5 just months away, you have to ask whether it’s really worth nabbing a new one now.

Acer Intel slates primed for netbook phase out

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST

New Intel Core-packing tablets readied as Acer admits netbooks are finished.

Acer has confirmed that it’s working on a pair of new Android slates which will cram in Intel’s latest Core processors, unveiled with much fanfare at CES earlier this month. Both tablets are set to rock Google’s Android OS.

And according to one Acer exec, they mark the beginning of the end for the company’s previously successful netbook range. Speaking in Thailand, Lu Bing-hsian said, “They are aimed at phasing out netbooks. That’s the direction of the market."

Considering Acer was one of the first PC maker’s to brush off concerns that the iPad was eating into its sales, that’s quite a u-turn. The Acer Aspire One was one of the leading netbooks during the micro machines’ first flush of success back in 2008.

Lu did say that simple netbooks would still be made by Acer and that it wasn’t simply going to stop producing them because of its plans for new tablets. But with Motorola, Toshiba and LG all priming Android tablets and the iPad surging ahead, it’ll need to step on it if it wants to make any sort of impact.

Is Acer right to start phasing out netbooks? Or do the pared down laptops still have a place? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Apple: new Android tablets are 'vapor'

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 11:47 PM PST

Comments come after quarterly earnings calls reveals record profits.

Apple’s COO, Tim Cook, the man standing in while Steve Jobs deals with health issues, has clearly been taking lessons from his boss on how to slap down rivals and ensure Apple remains top of the news agenda.

Following news during the Mac maker’s quarterly earnings call that Apple had sold 7.33 million iPads, Cook was asked about the slate’s rivals and he didn’t mince his words. Responding to repeated questions about the set of new Android Honeycomb tablets unveiled at CES, Cook said of the new efforts, “Today they’re vapor,” pointing out none of the devices had been slapped with price or release info in Vegas.

Cook also took time to call out current Android and Windows tablets. “There's the ones that use Windows, they're generally big and heavy and expensive… Then you have Android tablets, and the varieties that are out shipping today, their operating system wasn't designed for tablets. Google has said this, this isn't just Apple saying this.”

Cook went on to call Android tablets ‘scaled up smartphones’ saying they were fragmented and lacked a proper tablet experience. Harsh words indeed.

Is Tim Cook right to talk down Android’s new tablets before they’ve been released? Or is this a man worried about how Apple will fair once these new slates are on the shelves? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Mac, iPad and iPhone sales continue to surge

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 11:29 PM PST

iPod sales down, but another record quarter for the Cupertino company.

Apple has once again posted record quarterly profits and sales, with this week’s surprise news about Steve Jobs’ health failing to cloud another successful three months for the Cupertino company.

Profits for the three months to December 25 2010 sat at a colossal $6 billion, compared to $3.38 billion in the same period in 2009. Revenue was up to a mind-blowing $26.74 billion from $15.68 billion.

But it’s the sales figures which really show Apple kit remains the ultimate gadget must-have. iPhone sales jumped by 86 per cent to 16.24 million, with Macs jumping 23 per cent to 4.13 million. The iPad, not released in the comparable previous quarter, shifted 7.33 million. In the last quarterly report, it said it had sold 3.27 million of the tablets. Clearly it’s new rivals have a long way to go to match the iPad’s success.

The only sour note was the performance of the iPod line, which once again registered a fall. The drop was seven per cent, but still 19.45 million iPods flew off shelves.

For more on this story and Apple’s reaction to questions regarding its quarterly earnings call, stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages.
