The Motorola Xoom’s price is set to live up to suggestions of it donning a ‘premier’ price when the iPad rival is released on February 17th across the pond. Best Buy's latest leaked pricing sees the tablet come in at a hefty $799. Apple’s update to the iPad is set to be released in a matter of weeks but reports from 9to5Mac suggest that the rear-facing camera will be a disappointing 1-Megapixal.

LG Optimus 2x: Prices have been revealed for LG’s upcoming Optimus 2X. SIM-free the Optimus will demand a whopping £500 whilst Vodafone are offering contracts at £30.65 a month. That price might seem astronomical to some but one phone that is set blast off is a Google Android phone. British engineers are planning to test the limitations of an unnamed Android phone by sending it into outer space.

HTC 7 Pro: The Windows Phone 7 handset is to be available on Vodafone from just over £30 a month with SIM-free prices at £459.99 with a release date set for 11th February according to Expansys. HTC’s trademark interface ‘Sense UI’ is set to make the transition from smartphones to tablets once released and renamed to ‘HTC Sensation’.

Pope urges young Christians to join social networks

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 09:19 AM PST

Vatican target social networks to spread the word

Pope Benedict XVI has doffed his pope hat to social networking as he encouraged young Christians to join the likes of Facebook and Twitter during an announcement earlier today.

Whilst many a teenager ply their Facebook and Twitter feeds with effusive rants and scantily clad, morally questionable drunken photos, pope Benedict and the team of Vatican future proofers are hoping young Christians will use the social media outlets to praise the Lord and spread the message of the Bible.

Having warned against the dangers and risks of online communication pope Benedict announced: "I would like then to invite Christians, confidently and with an informed and responsible creativity, to join the network of relationships which the digital era has made possible.”

Following in the footsteps of many psychologist and for once encouraging the world to use protective measures whilst doing something enjoyable, his holiness encouraged his Facebook following in waiting to exercise caution when communicating online. He said:  "It is important always to remember that virtual contact cannot and must not take the place of direct human contact.”

"Entering cyberspace can be a sign of an authentic search for personal encounters with others, provided that attention is paid to avoiding dangers such as enclosing oneself in a sort of parallel existence, or excessive exposure to the virtual world."

Which person of global influence would you most like to virtually befriend via social networks? Let us know via T3’s very own Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Angry Birds goes romantic with Valentine's edition

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 08:59 AM PST

The latest Angry Birds game set to land on February 14th

Forget flowers and teddy bears, the only gift to buy your beloved this February 14th is the Angry Birds Valentine's Day edition app, which is reportedly in the works.

The fellas at Rovio have treated us to Halloween and Christmas iterations of their money-printing application and now it seems they're going all lovey dovey on us.

In a video released on DW-TV (which can be seen below) chronicling the story of Finland's greatest export since Sami Hyypia, the Rovio developers are pictured working away while the narrator reveals: "The designers and game developers at Rovio are currently working on new versions of their game, like this update in pink, due to come on the market on February the 14th – Valentine’s Day."

So expect lots of heart-shaped defences to smash to smithereens when the app launches, likely on multiple platforms, next month. With Christmas, Halloween and now seemingly Valentine's Day covered, we're eager to see what happens to those precious eggs come Easter.

White iPhone 4 release soon as handset hits Verizon

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 08:27 AM PST

White Apple smartphone to land soon

Recent speculation of a February 27th arrival for the long overdue white iPhone 4 looks likely to become reality as the lighter toned Apple blower appears on the inventory list of American network provider AT&T.

Having last week turned up on the inventory list of the German arm of the Vodafone network and the Best Buy system, the white iPhone 4 looks set to finally be made available to consumers next month, just eight months behind schedule and its black hued brethren.

The last official word from Apple on the white rendition of its market leading device came late last year tipping the device for a global arrival in spring 2011 following a number of issues matching the white of the handset’s shall to that of its home button.

Further delays to the already delay plagued white iPhone 4 could not only see LG beat Apple to the punch and release the white model of the CES 2011 unveiled LG Optimus 2X, the world’s first dual-core processor touting smartphone, but see the upcoming iPhone 5 land first making any consolation white fourth-generation offering redundant.

Have you been holding out on the white iPhone or did you give up hope and settle for the standard black model some time ago? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BBC online cuts to see half of top 400 websites shut down

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 07:53 AM PST

Radio axed from iPlayer as BBC Online is thinned out

Britain’s flagship broadcaster the BBC has announced it is to implement a number of major cutbacks with its online outlets taking the brunt of the axe’s force.

In an attempt to bring online costs down from £137 million to £103 million per annum by the 2013/2014 financial year, the BBC has reported that half of its 400 “top line” domains will be closed down with automated content filling the expansive void.

Whilst local news and sport coverage is to be drastically reduced, one of the biggest content culls will see radio removed from the BBC’s on-demand catch-up service iPlayer with back episode hunting audiophiles to instead be turned in the direction of the dedicated sites for the individual broadcast stations.

Keen to emphasise the importance of online content to the Beeb, BBC Director General Mark Thompson announced: “BBC online lies at the heart of the BBC' s digital future.” He added: "As in television and radio, licence fee payers look to the BBC to inform, educate and entertain them online.”

Expanding on the reasoning of the upcoming cuts Thompson said: “As digital technologies advance, internet delivery of content becomes more important and more profound in our lives.

"BBC Online is a huge success, but our vast portfolio of websites means we sometimes fall short of expectation. A refocusing of our editorial priorities, of commitment to the highest quality standards and a more streamlined and collegiate way of working will help us transform BBC Online for the future."

Which BBC online wouldn’t you mind losing to cuts and which can’t you live without? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Chameleon X-1 multi-purpose gaming mouse launches

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 07:41 AM PST

New all-in-one gaming mouse from Hong Kong

The Chameleon X-1, brainchild of Hong Kong-based company Shogun Bros, appears to be just a run-of-the-mill wireless mouse. We all know that appearances can be deceiving, though.

The Chameleon fuses together a PC gaming controller, mouse and remote control into one by becoming a tri-purpose tool, marrying gaming and multi-tasking better than any similar device we've seen.

The game controller is built into the underside of the mouse, sporting a similar control layout to that of a PlayStation with two, albeit miniature, analogue sticks. The Chameleon also acts as a Wii-style PC remote that can launch and operate iTunes with just the push of a button using a USB dongle and a 2.4 GHz wireless connection.

Prices in the US are around the $55 (£34) mark and anyone with small hands can order at http://shogunbros.com/.

HTC tablets to feature 'HTC Sensation' user interface

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 07:20 AM PST

HTC file patent for 'HTC Sensation' UI

HTC looks set to release a range of tablet devices in the coming months with its trademark Sense UI to make the jump from its smartphone devices with a slight name change.

Tipped to be readying the HTC Flyer tablet for a grand unveiling at Mobile World Congress 2011 next month, a new patent filing from the Taiwanese tech giant suggests HTC’s popular mobile user interface is going to be upgraded for tablet compatibility under the new moniker 'HTC Sensation'.

Filed last Wednesday, January 19th, HTC’s patent filing requests commercial ownership of the term ‘HTC Sensation’ when being used in relation to and representation of a number of product types and services including mobile phones, wireless devices and portable computers.

Expected to launch an Android 2.3 powered tablet in the MWC halls of Barcelona, HTC’s CEO Peter Chou last month declared the company responsible for the iPhone toppling HTC Desire would be launching tablet devices in 2011. He said: [Customers] may want Windows or Android; or they may want big screen or small screen, they may want keyboard or tablet; HTC will let the consumer decide.”

Android smartphone to be blasted into space

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 06:37 AM PST

Android OS device to be first used in satellite

British engineers have announced they plan to send a Google Android touting mobile handset into space in order to determine the limitations of such devices.

The team from Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) in Guildford have declared they intend to use the Android handset to operate a 30cm satellite they are sending up into space later this year to take aerial pictures of the Earth.

Whilst it has yet to be announced exactly what model handset will be taking this out of this world journey, the SSTL Project Manager of mission STRaND-1, Shaun Kenyon, announced “Modern smartphones are pretty amazing.”

"They come now with processors that can go up to 1GHz, and they have loads of flash memory. First of all, we want to see if the phone works up there, and if it does, we want to see if the phone can control a satellite," Kenyon added.

Whilst mobile devices have been sent to awe-inspiring heights adjoined to high altitude balloons in the past, such as the Google Nexus S which was sent 18km up last year, this latest mission marks the first occasion in which a smartphone will be sent into orbit hundreds of kilometres above terra firma.

Attempting to show off-the-shelf electronics can be used to drastically cut the expenditure of space exploration missions, STRaND-1 will use a single sub-£300 device to control and photograph the operation. Speaking on the simplicity of the task Kenyon stated: "We're not taking it apart; we're not gutting it; we're not taking out the printed circuit boards and re-soldering them into our satellite - we're flying it as is.”

Motorola Xoom launch set for February 17th priced $799

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 04:18 AM PST

Xoom price on the hefty side

Motorola’s upcoming foray into the tablet market, the Android 3.0 introducing Motorola Xoom, has seen its launch date and pricing leaked in the US.

Pegged for a February 17th stateside arrival with a hefty $799 (£500) price tag, the Motorola Xoom looks set to land $300 more expensive than the entry level iPad and just $30 less than the highest specced Wi-Fi + 3G Apple tablet. Both the arrival date and the expected price have appeared in individual leaks via tech retailer Best Buy.

Leaked via an internal information document interspersed with customer service piffle, the Xoom’s February 17th launch date would see the device touch down in the U.S. just days after Apple COO Tim Cook is expected to take to the stage to unveil the upcoming iPad 2. With much speculation surrounding the Xoom’s price, one tipster revealed what they claim to be a Best Buy stock printout showing the Motorola tablet priced $799.

Whilst confirmed UK pricing and release dates have yet to materialise, online retailer HanTec recently made the Xoom available for pre-order with a whopping £720 asking price.

If these leaked prices prove accurate on both sides of the pond, Motorola will try to justify the device’s high-end price tag on its impressive spec haul. Featuring an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, the Xoom will boast a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800p display and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera alongside a 720p HD video recording capable 5-megapixel snapper on the rear. The usual bag of 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity options and 32GB or in-built storage will come as standard.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Tab has Motorola with the Xoom priced itself out of true iPad toppling competition? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

PSP2 to launch with OLED display and 3G data options

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 03:36 AM PST

Sony add new features to upcoming PSP2

With the Sony PSP2 expected to be unveiled this Thursday, January 27th, new rumours and reports have seen the upcoming device pegged with an OLED touchscreen display and 3G data capabilities.

Leaked in the reputable and oft-tech accurate Nikkei newspaper in Japan, the long overdue follow-up to the PSP is said to feature a larger display than its predecessor with the mooted OLED offering adding improved image quality and colour depth.

Powering the increased specs of the PSP2 will be a new processor with the portable gaming device adding to its online on the move gaming credentials through the inclusion of 3G network support. Announced as being supplied with 3G connectivity in Japan via the NTT DoCoMo network, it is currently unknown which service providers would support the device here in the UK.

Whilst these speculative specs have whet our appetite ahead on this week’s expected unveiling, it is hard to see how Sony intends to successfully launch both the PSP2 and widely tipped PSP Phone within a month of each other.

Which device would you rather see added to your tech arsenal the PSP2 or the PSP Phone? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

LG Optimus 2x UK price revealed

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 03:12 AM PST

Powerful LG Optimus 2x priced, but delayed?

The LG Optimus 2x was expected to release on 21 February as we had reported last week.

However, the online retailer Expansys now shows the date as being 18 March 2011.

To remind customers waiting for the LG Optimus 2x, it is available for pre-order on a SIM-free price of £500, and Vodafone has come out with its prices for the phone on contract.

Contracts with Vodafone start at £30.65 a month, which gives you the handset free, unlimited texts, 300 minutes and 500MB of internet. Free gifts with the contract include a universal PDA/phone car mounting kit and a microUSB car charger.

The phone was revealed at CES 2011 and is powered with Android 2.2 Froyo, has an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen display and 8GB of internal memory, which can be increased by 32GB via microSD. In addition, it is the first handset to possess full HD 1080p video recording and playback.

An upgrade to Android 2.3 has already been announced.

The UK is also hoping to see the LG Optimus Black land sometime in March.

Are you pre-ordering the LG Optimus 2x? Let us know on T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned in for your latest news from the world of tech.

iPad 2 camera: Same as on 4th-gen iPod Touch?

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 02:55 AM PST

New rumour suggests a poor lens on Apple's next tablet

Those excited about the prospect of holding their iPad 2s aloft like a big picture-taking concrete slabs may have reason to be slightly less excited today, as a report from 9to5Mac says that the rear-facing cam on the tablet’s sequel will only be a paltry 1-Megapixel number.

The website delved into the SDK of the upcoming tablet and found in its depths references to the camera as being 1-Megapixel, but the report claims that this will in fact be the same 0.7-Meg lens as is found on the 4th generation iPod Touch. That camera is limited to shots 960 by 720 pixels deep and video at native 720p. Not all that special, given the iPhone 4’s excellent 5-Meg cam.

The front camera is also said to be the same as is found on the Touch – a 0.2-Meg VGA. Obviously, this cam will be good enough to take part in Apple’s FaceTime video conferencing, but it’s still not awe-inspiring.

Are you dissipated by this potentially cam-ruining news? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

LG Optimus 2X white edition spotted as handset hits Korea

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 02:54 AM PST

Dual-core LG handset to get white makeover

LG has beaten Motorola to the coveted punch by making its dual-core smartphone the LG Optimus 2X available to consumers in its native South Korea as the company teases a white edition of the handset.

Unveiled at CES 2011 the LG Optimus 2X was originally tipped for a February 21st UK arrival before being pushed back to March 18th for unknown reasons. Pegged with a £500 SIM-free price tag, Vodafone has announced it will offer the Optimus 2X free of charge on a £30.65 per month contract with unlimited texts, 300 minutes and 500MB of inclusive data.

Landing with Google’s Android 2.2 mobile OS, FroYo, pre-installed with a 2.3, Gingerbread, update already announced, the LG Optimus 2X secures its world’s first moniker thanks to its Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor wrapped around a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen, 8GB of inbuilt storage and full HD 1080p video recording and playback capabilities.

Having pipped Motorola to the accolade of launching the first dual-core handset, LG now looks set to step on Apple’s toes as it unveils a white version of the 2X handset. Whist it is unknown whether the lighter hued 2X will touch down in the UK following its expected February Korean launch, its potential UK arrival would showup Apple which has been plagued by issues for its white iPhone 4 originally scheduled to launch alongside its black counterpart back in June.

Does the 2X’s dual-core processor party piece tempt you into splashing out on the device come its now March UK arrival? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Social networking sites make us 'less human'

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 11:41 PM PST

Could social networking websites be harmful?

According to an American sociologist, social networking sites are making us "less human".

The method of communicating online through social networking sites can be seen as a "modern form of madness".

According to Sherry Turkle, a professor at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology who has written a new book, Alone Together, these websites isolate people from reality by dominating people's lives making them less human.

She says, "A behaviour that has become typical may still express the problems that once caused us to see it as pathological."

She also claims that cyber-reality is just an imitation of the real world and isolates people.

"We have invented inspiring and enhancing technologies, yet we have allowed them to diminish us."

Her book Alone Together will be published in the UK next month and takes a different path from her last two books, which had an open view towards technology. Her warnings come after the death of a woman in Brighton who posted a suicide note on Facebook - yet not one of her 1000+ "friends" called for help.
