Ever found Sudoku annoyingly difficult? Well fear not, as the Google Goggles app, can now read and work out sudoku puzzles, handy if you're trying to impress that special lady in your life, no not your girlfriend, your grandmother. In other gaming news, many parents can now breath a sie of relief as Nintendo has announced that the 3DS' 3D credentials are not harmful to their little darlings' pupils as long as their eyes are developing normally... Should have gone to specsavers.

Spam levels are set to increase as serial spammers come back from their Christmas 'leave'. Online security firms Symantec and Netwitness worker, Alex Cox told BBC news "As best we can tell, they took a holiday. The people running Rustock are running a business - albeit an illegitimate one - so maybe they needed time off too." Thanks Alex. However, in other news, T-Mobile has advised users to download big files at their homes and not on their phones. This comes after a statement on their website relating to the fair use policy, entitling everyone to use the internet. However using the internet, in T-Mobile mind is looking at websites and checking e-mails. No BBC iPlayer for T-Mobile customers then.

South Korean Tech giants, LG have today unveiled the worlds first Dual core handset, supported by Android. The phone will go on sale in the UK on Feb 21st priced £500, ouch. However, Stateside, Blackberry has announced that plans are in the pipeline to bring out its own dual-core handset, let's just hope it's not as expensive as the LG, for our wallets sake. Elsewhere on the dual-core sporting mobile front, follow-up to the hugely popular Samsung Galaxy S, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress next month packing one of the extra powerful processors, lovely.

Samsung Galaxy S2 set for Mobile World Congress launch

4.3-inch Super AMOLED touting Galaxy S2 to launch at MWC

Successor to the hugely successful Samsung Galaxy S handset, the cleverly named Samsung Galaxy S2, is to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress next month, new reports suggest.

Having been tipped for an MWC arrival by Korean newspaper Chosunilbo shortly before the New Year, latest reports have suggested the imminent Galaxy S2 arrival is likely with mock-up images of the handset appearing on the web.

Tipped as a Samsung-branded version of the recently released Android 2.3, Gingerbread introducing Google Nexus S, rumoured specs see the Galaxy S follow-up sporting a tasty 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, in-built NFC chip and the latest 2.3 rendition of Google’s mobile-centric operating system.

Following on from the company’s declaration of intent at the Consumer Electronics Show recently, it is believed the Galaxy S2 will be the first Samsung handset to sport a dual-core processor, beefing up the handsets capabilities and challenging the fleet of dual-core devices unveiled at CES.

Mobile World Congress is set to descend on Barcelona between February 14th and 17th with the biggest players in the portable blower world all tipped to showcase new and groundbreaking releases.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest MWC coverage live from the floor of the Barcelona convention halls.

Apple iPhone 4G fails to land as iPhone 4 hits Verizon

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 08:36 AM PST

No 4G capable iPhone for Verizon

The heavily anticipated Verizon iPhone press conference has left a number of expectant consumers and industry personal disappointed as the heavily rumoured 4G LTE network capable iPhone 4 fails to materialise.

Taking to the stage in New York, Verizon CEO Lowell Macadam further enhanced our 4G iPhone expectations as he opened the press conference with the tantalising quip: "Okay, it looks like you're expecting a big announcement. I don't think we'll disappoint. If the press write something long enough, eventually it comes true. We're very very excited about our announcement today."

Despite the lack of 4G capabilities, Verizon did however reveal that it is to stock the current Apple iPhone 4 model, first launched back in July, with the iOS touting blower to be available to existing customers over the company’s CDMA network from February 3rd. New customers will be able to snap up the Verizon-bound iPhone a week later on February 10th.

Speaking at the Verizon unveiling, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer and Jobs’ right-hand-man Tim Cook announced: "Tens of millions of customers have purchased the iPhone around the world. Customers have downloaded billions of apps. I am incredibly happy, and I can tell you all of Apple, is very very excited to bring the iPhone to Verizon's customers."

When asked why Apple and Verizon had failed to utilise the company’s emerging 4G LTE network, Verizon’s Dan Dee said: “We have a tremendous 3G network -- we want to be sure we can take advantage of that.”

Will we see a 4G capable iPhone when the expected iPhone 5 lands later this year? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

The Daily iPad newspaper to launch January 19th?

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 06:34 AM PST

iPad specific newspaper to land later this month

Two of the most influential and powerful men in the non-political world Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs are set to share a stage later this month to officially unveil their upcoming iPad-based joint venture, new reports suggest.

Believed to be scheduled for January 19th, Apple head Jobs and News Corp boss Murdoch with take to the stage of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to launch The Daily, the first daily updated iPad-specific newspaper.

Murdoch, whose company News Corp owns some of the world’s largest publications and broadcasters including The Sun, The Times and Sky, has dubbed the Daily the “number one most exciting project” of recent months and has declared his willingness to invest up to $30 million (£19.3 million) in the digital release.

The latest reports seemingly confirm a number of predictions made shortly before the Christmas period which pegged The Daily with a launch in the week beginning January 17th. It is believed that a weekly subscription to The Daily will set Stateside users back a penny shy of $1.

Although far from confirmed, it has been suggested that, based on Apple’s announcement of the iPad late last January, the much mooted iPad 2 will launch alongside The Daily later this month.

Stay tuned to T3.com and the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds for all the latest on the launch of The Daily and the highly anticipated iPad 2.

Google Goggles can now solve sudoku puzzles

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 05:42 AM PST

Solve puzzles by cheating. Impress friends.

Google Goggles, the nifty app which returns search results based on pictures you've taken with your mobile phone has now been equipped with the ability to solve sudoku puzzles.

In the biggest tech vs man development since the chess computer whooped Garry Kasparov's grumpy ass, the app can now scan the puzzle grid and fill in the gaps within a few seconds.

In a video posted by the Google Labs team, the app is shown handsomely defeating the US National Sudoku Champion who took it much better than the old Russian Grandmaster turned political activist.

Also in the update for iPhone and Android is a better barcord scanner and better ad recognition, but its the puzzle solver that's made the headlines here. Check out the video below.

Motorola targets 1 million XOOM sales in three months

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:39 AM PST

Google Android 3.0 powered XOOM target large sales

Having unveiled its first foray into the tablet market at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, Motorola is reported to be producing 800,000 of its XOOM device ahead of launch.

Expected to hit stores across the globe in March, Motorola is believed to be targeting 1 million unit sales by the mid point of 2011 with the moniker of the first device to sport Google’s upcoming tablet-friendly Android 3.0, Honeycomb operating system a key selling point.

Set to feature a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 10.1-inch 1280 x 800p display, front and rear facing cameras with 720p HD video recording capabilities and 32GB of internal storage, the 3G and Wi-Fi enabled XOOM was yesterday made available for pre-order in the UK with a hefty £720 price mark.

Whilst this pricing has yet to be confirmed, or denied, by Motorola, we struggle to see how the company could hope to sell in excess of 1 million units in a three month period if this lofty price tag proves accurate. Further sentencing the XOOM to overpriced failure, a comparably speced Apple iPad, the market leading tablet of choice, is over £100 cheaper with entry level iPads available for as little as £439.

Does the XOOM’s impressive spec sheet make up for its sky-high price point? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Penthouse to launch world's first 3D porn channel

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:10 AM PST

3D porn to be readily available

Adult entertainment giant Penthouse has announced it is planning to launch the world’s first 3D porn channel, allowing customers to get their jollies to purely extra-dimensional smut.

Targeting a Q2 2011 launch, the Penthouse 3D channel is set to feature a feast of high-definition 3D porn flicks for early adopters of the emerging 3D industry in what CEO of Penthouse’s parent company FriendFiender, Marc Bell, has described as the “perfect 3D production quality.”

Whilst the thought of getting off to on-screen footage wearing nothing more than a pair of 3D specs and a dirty grin might not be everyone’s cup of tea, the existing Penthouse HD channel, which launched in 2009, has a massive following broadcasting across 30 different platforms in 15 countries around the globe.

On the planned launch Bell revealed: “Consumer excitement for 3D content is high, and Penthouse is the one studio that can rely on its broad expertise to deliver 3D in a manner unmatched by any other branded entertainment company”.

He added: “We started shooting in 3D this past summer, and have significantly invested to perfect 3D production quality.”

Would the ready availability of a 3D porn channel tempt you into splashing out on the latest tech in home entertainment? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Hijackers hit North Korean Twitter and YouTube accounts

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:00 AM PST

Crafty hackers break into North's social sites

Hackers have tapped into and successfully posted tweets calling for an uprising on North Korea’s Twitter and YouTube’s account.

It is strange and hard to believe a country like North Korea has actually bothered to set up both YouTube and Twitter accounts. Perhaps to broadcast their idealistic messages to the rest of the world, as no average Joe or Jim in Pyongyang would be able to read them, thanks to their lack of internet, computers and basically everything else technology related.

The ambitious hack, took place on January 8th, which was also Kim Jong-un's Birthday, now there's a present you don't often get.

Firstly posts on Twitter sites linked to the North started calling for up rises to overthrow Kim Jong-il and his Son, Jong-un, slightly strange you might ask?

Well things got more peculiar when the hackers then turned to their YouTube account. A video, which can be seen here, was posted up on the ‘dear leaders’ YouTube page, showing Kim Jong-un, driving around in a sports car and running over helpless women and children.

As you’d expect, the Twitter posts and YouTube clip were quickly removed, however cached versions of the video are still up on the social broadcasting site for you to watch and cringe at.

Let us know your thoughts on this Tweeting mishap via T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Microsoft investigates Windows Phone data bug

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 02:56 AM PST

Up to 50MB of data being sent and received a day for unknown reasons

Microsoft is currently looking into a mystery problem with Windows Phone 7 that appears to be causing the handsets to send and receive 3G data whilst idle.

The bug, which seems to be a US-based one, is storming through users’ monthly data allowances, in some cases chugging away 50MB a day doing nothing. Some users have noted that their handsets’ idle data usage is a huge 2-5MB per hour. Added up, it’s a problem that’ll run a 1GB data allowance dry in well under a month.

The problem may be caused by one of two things, claim reports. The first is that it’s a simple case of the phone using 3G even when connected to WiFi – a problem which could be easily fixed. The second is slightly more sinister, as it suggests that Microsoft has the handsets hard wired to constantly send feedback to HQ.

The official word from MS is that it is "investigating this issue to determine the root cause and will update with information and guidance as it becomes available.”

Have you been affected by this? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

BlackBerry dual-core 'super phone' in the works

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 02:32 AM PST

The wait for a super speedy BB may be a long one however...

RIM Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis has confirmed that work on a more powerful BlackBerry smartphone has already begun.

In an interview with PC Magazine, Lazaridis revealed that the new  'super phones'  would be based on dual core processors and the QNX OS currently being used for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The bad news for BB fans is despite the Motorola Atrix and LG Optimus 2X showing off its dual core credentials at CES last week, the Canadian phone manufacturer is looking a little further down the line to bring a dual core BlackBerry handset to the market.

While Lazaridis believes the technology is ideally suited to tablet PCs like the PlayBook, he believes "Battery life, size, weight, thickness, cost" would come at the expense of putting out a device anytime in the near future.

How long will we have to wait? Well Lazaridis finished his interview covering RIM's long term plan saying, "What we're setting up is for the next 10 years of BlackBerry. We just finished the first 10 years, actually closer to 12 - the first decade of BlackBerry. Now we're setting up for the next decade of BlackBerry." Let's hope you don't keep up waiting that long Mike...

Internet spam levels to return to normal

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 01:26 AM PST

The lull in spam e-mail over the Christmas holidays has passed, according to security firms.

The mysterious drop in the volume of spam e-mail being sent around the world over the Christmas period has ended, according to online security firms Symantec and Netwitness.

The Rustock botnet, a massive network of infected computers churning out billions of spam e-mails per day, unexplainedly halted its barrage of of junk mail in early December. However, consumers of fraudulent male enhancement pills will be happy to hear that after a Christmas break the spammers appear to be up and running again.

When asked why the sudden drop in activity, BBC News quoted NetWitness employee Alex Cox as saying: "As best we can tell, they took a holiday. The people running Rustock are running a business - albeit an illegitimate one - so maybe they needed time off too."

The Rustock botnet is now responsible for more than a quarter of all junk mail sent online, with 67 billion messages sent on January 10th alone.

Nintendo 3DS 3D effect safe for children

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 12:54 AM PST

3DS could be used to detect visual problems in children.

After concerns that the upcomind Nintendo 3DS' glasses-free 3D screen might damage the eyes of the under-sixes, the American Optometric Association have come forward to say that use of the 3DS might actually be good for visually impaired children, as problems they experience while viewing the 3D images could highlight otherwise unnoticed problems with their sight.

Problems that could affect the viewing of 3D images on a 3DS are in many cases similar to problems that cause difficulty reading, according to the AOA. The 3DS could provide an easy litmus test to see if a child is suffering from problems like a lack of focus in one or both eyes, crossed-eyedness or eyes that are misaligned.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of Nintendo's own recent warnings to parents that the use of the 3D effect may not be safe for younger children whose eyes are still developing. The AOA apparently agree that all such devices should be used in moderation, but that for children with normally developing eyes, there should be no risk in using the 3DS in 3D mode.

T-Mobile tell users to download big files at home

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 12:20 AM PST

T-Mobile promise better service for customers - just less of it.

From the beginning of February, T-Mobile customers will have their data usage limited to just 500MB per month, down from a current maximum of 3GB.

According to a statement on the T-Mobile website, this fair use policy is there to ensure that T-Mobile customers will "always be able to browse the internet". Thought you already were browsing the internet? Apparently not, as the statement goes on to explain  "browsing means looking at websites and checking mail, but not watching videos, downloading files or playing games". Or at least it does now, if you're a T-Mobile customer.

So, what are your options if you want to do more than, ahem, browse? "If you want to download, stream and watch video clips, save that stuff for your home broadband", says T-Mobile.
