With readily available content always likely to play the deciding factor in the widespread uptake of 3D technologies, the launch of Sky 3D back on October 1st has been met with much enthusiasm as movies, sport and documentaries all give viewers a taste of the extra dimension. It is reported that 70,000 3D TV owners are now signed up to Sky 3D in the UK.

Sony release new PlayStation 3 security update Posted: 27 Jan 2011 06:49 AM PST Minor security patch released for PS3 Amidst fears of hackers taking advantage of certain vulnerabilities with the PlayStation 3’s security, Sony has responded with the release of a new security update.
There are no new features added alongside the update and just the one security update. As a result of this latest security update, speculation is mounting as to whether Sony is considering implementing a serial key security system to PS3 game sales much like releases of PC titles.

BBC iPlayer app finally coming to iPhone and iPad? Posted: 27 Jan 2011 06:46 AM PST iOS apps will be digital boss's parting gift. The seemingly eternal wait for the BBC iPlayer to land on the Apple iPhone and iPad could be over within a month according to today's reports.
The apps which were announced over a year ago, and eventually green-lighted by the BBC Trust around six months ago have been long awaited by those iPad owners who cited the promised iPad app as a reason for splashing out on Apple's tablet.
Now, according to PaidContentUK, the apps will be available from the App Store by the end of February, coinciding with the date that project head, the Beeb's Future Media and Technology director Erik Huggers leaves to take on a job at Intel. The news will come as a relief to mobile viewers who have struggled with accessing the content through their Safari browser on Apple devices.
In terms of functionality, well not a lot is known at present. The apps are likely to have social networking features heavily integrated with an interface similar to the user-friendly offering already provided by the excellent iPlayer website. Whether it'll boast exactly the same line-up and availability of content is also unknown.
However, the frustration continues for Android owners with the Corporation showing no signs of spreading the service to Google's mobile operating system. With extensive cutbacks taking hold across the BBC's digital operations, it's unlikely we'll be seeing an announcement any time soon.
The BBC recently revealed a record 145 million requests for content throughout the month of December and 4 per cent of those came through mobile offerings.
The iPlayer app for iOS devices is likely to only be available to UK viewers, with the Beeb thought to be planning a worldwide subscription-based iPlayer service later this year.

HTC Desire 2 release heading for MWC 2011 as pictures leak Posted: 27 Jan 2011 06:21 AM PST Desire 2 loses trackpad ahead of MWC 2011 unveiling HTC’s Mobile World Congress 2011 unveilings are popping up by the day with the latest leak outing the mooted HTC Desire 2.
With specs of the Android run HTC Flyer tablet appearing following previous HTC tablet speculation and claims that the Taiwanese company is prepping the launch of two Facebook-branded, re-jigged Android handsets, the latest leak comes in the form of a craftily snapped picture on the subway.
One obvious omission on this stunningly sleek potential Desire 2 device is the trademark trackpad that appears to have been given the boot in place of full touchscreen navigation controls.
Although the photographs have turned up with no word on expected release dates, pricing or specs, with MWC 2011 just a few short weeks away we might not have to wait too long for the HTC Desire 2 to enter the realms of reality.
What functions would the Desire 2 need to topple the iPhone 4? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest MWC coverage live from the convention halls in Barcelona.

Sony PSP 2: first verdict from the experts Posted: 27 Jan 2011 05:05 AM PST Is the Sony NGP a true next-gen console? Finally, the curtain is off the Sony PSP 2, and it’s been given the working title of NGP (Next Generation Portable). But does it look any good? Is a multi-touch pad on the back enough to compete with the Nintendo 3DS? And where does it leave the fabled Sony Ericsson PSP Phone?
Matt Hill, Deputy Editor, T3 magazine As with the original PSP, it looks like a sexy piece of kit – touch-screen on the back has some intriguing possibilities and the graphics are obviously going to be great – but it may well suffer the same issues of its predecessor. Analogue sticks in theory are ace, but ergonomically it looks like it could be relatively uncomfortable to play again, and they are unusual protrusions in a world of super-slick, flat-form devices (prepare for a whole industry in third-party NPG cases).
And while clunky UMDs have been thrown in the bin, in an App Store world, is yet another, all-new physical game format really the solution with 3G and Wi-Fi on board? The PlayStation Suite mobile gaming platform is arguably more exciting, although does this mean that the hotly anticipated ‘PlayStation Phone’ is just a Sony Ericsson handset running PS Suite?
Marc Chacksfield, Deputy Editor Tech Radar.com Sony has managed to create a seriously cool device with the Next Generation Portable. Packing a quad-core processor, massive 5-inch OLED screen and dual analogue sticks, the NGP is an absolute powerhouse in your pocket. With great power, though, comes a great-big price. Sony hasn’t said how much the NGP will be but if it is indeed as powerful as the PS3, then it is going to be very expensive. That said, if the specs are true, the NGP is truly the biggest step we’ve seen in portable gaming for some time and puts the rather gimmickry Nintendo 3DS to shame. Christmas can’t come sooner.
Thomas East, Online Editor, Official Nintendo Magazine To be honest you can't really compare the two. While Sony's NGP is very powerful and boasts Touch screen technology, Nintendo's 3DS is the handheld that is genuinely groundbreaking. 3DS is offering something that has never been seen before - 3D gaming without the need for glasses. It was the same with the PSP and original DS. The PSP was the more powerful console but the DS offered something new and that, in the end, proved more attractive to consumers.
Mark Mayne, Deputy Editor, T3.com The hardware looks like it'll cut it, especially in connectivity terms, but the PSP2 is up against some fearsome competition here. As ever, the games will be where this stands or falls. The ability to run 'mini-games' from the Playstation Suite store on Android and the upcoming PSP Phone as well as PSP2 might just be a masterstroke though.
Hannah Bouckley, Reviews Editor, T3 magazine and T3.com 'I'm not impressed. I'm glad the screen is OLED, but the resolution is lower then the iPhone 4, yet it is bigger? I think the device is far too big, there's no way I'd want to use that on my commute and there are too many controls. Finally Sony has - again - introduced a new bespoke card format. Just what the world needs. Joe Svetlik, News Editor, T3 magazine and T3.com I’m dubious. The 3DS is just fun to play, which is what gaming is about. The NGP looks nice, but there’s nothing to get that excited about. That multi-touch pad on the back? Not convinced. The press release says it’ll let you “interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion” – 3D wannabes, perhaps? As ever it’s the games that’ll decide it, and the 3DS has that sewn up at the moment. Adam Bunker, Staff Writer, T3 magazine and T3.com It's undoubtedly a nice looking bit of kit. The part of me that likes new and shiny things definitely wants it, but I know I'll buy it and only play it a handful of times before I just forget to take it with me on the commute - much like I did with the DS. Ideally I want a PSP Phone with these specs but that won't rip through battery life for when I actually have to make a call.
Rhi Morgan, Multimedia Reporter, T3.com The new NGP doesn't really offer anything that I can't get on my phone already. Sure, there are the stalwart PlayStation games but I prefer to play these on a big screen on my PS3 at home. Sony should have taken notes from Nintendo, at least the 3DS brings something new to handheld gaming.
Luke Johnson, Freelance News Reporter, T3 magazine and T3.com Whilst the NGP looks both physically and technically impressive, I don’t believe portable games consoles have the longevity of entertainment or social factors that make their living room counterparts so successful. Lacking the a novelty factor by not touting 3D credentials will undoubtedly affect sales in the casual gamer market, Sony’s expected graphical superiority will appease hardcore gamers.
Michael Sawh, Freelance Features Writer, T3.com After the Nintendo 3DS, I expected Sony to pull out all the stops for its next PSP, and there is definitely plenty of things to be excited about the NGP/PSP 2.
My instant worry is that should I buy one, it will probably after a month’s use on the train, be dispatched to the back of a draw alongside my PSP Slim. Mobile gaming has come on leaps and bounds since the PSP Go and I am more than happy to play a session of Angry Birds on my smartphone than having to worry about carrying another device around with me.
One interesting concept that Sony says it is working on which could potentially alter my view is the ability to allow gamers to play their game on the PSP 2, and then finish it on their PS3. For a PS3 owner that kind of connect between the devices would make a lot of sense, and would give the PSP 2 more appeal. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 launch date confirmed for MWC 2011 Posted: 27 Jan 2011 04:52 AM PST PR leak reveals Samsung's MWC 2011 plans A leaked conference schedule has revealed that Samsung is to officially unveil follow-ups to both the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Samsung Galaxy S at the upcoming Mobile World Congress.
Breaking down the times of Samsung’s MWC opening from the one hour pre show cocktail reception to the unusually time one hour and four minute press conference, the leaks claims that Sammy will spend the final 34 minutes on product presentations with the “Galaxy S 2” and “Galaxy Tab 2” on line for revealing. The unveiling is set to kick off at 6pm GMT on Sunday February 13th.

iPhone 4 controlled helicopter for 50 quid Posted: 27 Jan 2011 03:24 AM PST Put off by Parrot AR. Drone's hefty price tag? AppToyz release cheaper alternative There’s no doubting that the Parrot Ar. Drone is a gadget that we have all looked at with keen interest. However, at a cool £300 it’s hard to justify purchasing. Now, though, there is a cheaper, albeit not quite as sophisticated, alternative.
The people at AppToyz have come up with their own attachment that turns your iPhone into a remote control to operate their existing remote control helicopters.
The AppToyz Helicopter costs just £50 and works in the same fashion as the Parrot using an attachment that plugs into the earphone jack and controlled using the touch screen of your iPhone or iPod touch. Via: Engadget

Dell Streak 7 details land, all signs point to Android 2.2 Posted: 27 Jan 2011 03:09 AM PST Can this mid-sized tablet find a market? Details of the upcoming Dell Streak 7 – the 7-inch tablet version of Dell’s 5-inch Streak phone – have landed, pointing to a mixed bag of specs and a summer 2011 release date.
While Dell is also hard at work readying a Motorola XOOM-baiting 10-inch Streak, the smaller ‘7’ looks set to rival the Samsung Galaxy Tab, albeit with some caveats in terms of spec. The Streak 7 will benefit from a dual-core Nvidia Tegra processor, 16 or 32GB of storage, an 800x480 resolution display and a 1.3-Meg front facing cam (to match it’s top notch 5-Meg rear one), but the operating system may just let it down. Everything Everywhere NFC payments coming this spring Posted: 27 Jan 2011 03:00 AM PST New SIM cards set to pave way for virtual wallet on slew of phones. Everything Everywhere, Orange and T-Mobile’s joint venture, has confirmed that it’s rolling out NFC-packing SIMs in the second quarter of this year. A tie-up with Barclaycard will mean users can pay for low-ticket goods by swiping their phone at over 40,000 stores across the UK.
Contactless payments are already huge thanks to Barclaycard and Visa implementing the tech on their debit and credit cards. And three years after O2 trialled a similar service in London, Everything Everywhere’s offering is set to take the idea of paying with your phone mainstream.
An Everything Everywhere spokesperson said, “"We see a future where a consumer can use the mobile phone to spend on the high street, get discounts and redeem in store as well as use the phone as a ticket for the bus, train or access to a sports or music venue." Indeed, O2’s trial allowed punters to use their Oyster card on their phone.
With the Google Nexus S already rocking NFC and the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 also expected to come pack he tech, it seems mobile payments are finally set to make the leap into the big time in 2011. Posted: 27 Jan 2011 02:02 AM PST Low stock points to internal updates for top-end MacBook Pros. The MacBook Pro looks set for an imminent refresh with stocks of the 15 and 17 inch models running low at Apple stores and third party retailers. MacRumors is reporting that Amazon isn’t shipping 17 inch models for “one to two months”.
However, you can still lay your hands on the top-end laptops at Apple’s online store within 24 hours. But with other stores reporting difficulties in getting hold of stock, the chances of an update appear extremely likely.
The new model of the MacBook Pro is expected to cram in the latest Intel processors, with chatter that this upgrade could go beyond a simple internal boost. Word is Apple wants to slim the machines down, taking its cue from the stunning new MacBook Air lineup.

Facebook phone details revealed Posted: 27 Jan 2011 01:02 AM PST Insider claims cloud-centric cell is just around the corner. Following word yesterday about an HTC-made, Android-packing Facebook phone, more hot gossip about a blower built for the world’s favourite social network has hit the web.
A tipster has spilled the beans to the chaps at BGR, delivering deets on just what we can expect when a Facebook phone does get the official nod. And it’s all about using the cloud and your location.
The Facebook phone is unlikely to have any local storage, with all your contacts, music and data stashed in the cloud. What’s more, location aware coupons will tap into an always-on GPS service, offering you vouchers for stores which you’ve told Facebook you’re interested in.
The GPS offering will also check you in automatically and share your location, although the privacy headache this would cause means it’s likely that you’d have the option of switching such a feature off.
There’ll also be news ticker notifications, with all messages falling into one place, channeling Facebook’s new messaging service which was revealed last year.
Whether this is the same handset that HTC is rumoured to be unveiling at next month’s Mobile World Congress remains to be seen. Would you buy a Facebook phone? Or does this sound like a gimmick too far? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

PlayStation Suite Android games store incoming Posted: 26 Jan 2011 11:56 PM PST Have Google's gaming prayers been answered by Sony? Sony has confirmed that it’s working on a PlayStation Suite games store for Android. The new virtual emporium is set to come loaded with stacks of killer classic PSP and PSOne games which will be available across a slew of phones packing Google’s mobile OS.
Devs will also be able to get involved in creating new titles, with Sony revealing a PlayStation Certified programme to ensure titles are top notch and mobile gamers aren’t left loaded up with naff add-ons.
Sony’s Kaz Hirai said during last night’s Sony bash in Japan that the PlayStation suite would be “hardware neutral”, meaning it should work on any number of gadgets in the future. A version of the store is set to sit pretty on the newly announced Sony NGP.
Any phones using the PlayStation Suite will have to rock Android 2.3 Gingerbread. No release date has been announced either. But for now, surely this is enough to make Google think it can finally do battle with Apple in the mobile gaming stakes. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sony NGP: PSP2 finally gets official Posted: 26 Jan 2011 11:33 PM PST Touchscreen, new UI and UMD replacement tech all included in new PSP. Forget the damp squib that was the PSPgo and prepare at last to ditch your old-school PSP. Sony has finally come clean about its plans for the PSP2, or to give it its full title, the Next Generation Portable (you can call it NGP if you like).
The new handheld hub was revealed last night in Japan and crams in some killer features. There’s a massive 5-inch 960x544 OLED touchscreen, a touch-sensitive back (just as predicted), dual analogue sticks, cameras front and back, a chip which Sony says is the most advanced available. Chuck in 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi and you’re looking at a winner.
The Sony NGP is also eschewing the PSPgo’s download-only approach, instead opting for UMD-replacing cards. The Big S was thin on details here, but at least complaints about expensive downloads will be a thing of the past.
That’s not to say you won’t be able to access goodies via the PlayStation Store. Sony is going big on location-based games in a bid to challenge the iPhone and Android, with a sleek new ‘Live Area’ UI, that promises to make zipping around the NPG a breeze.
Want some bad news? Sony says the NGP won’t be out until “the holidays”. And no that doesn’t mean the weekend of the royal wedding, it means Christmas. Just the 11 month wait then.
Will this be enough to slay the Nintendo 3DS? Or is Sony leaving it way too late to get back into the handheld battle? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
