Mark Zuckerberg Facebook hack: Company blames 'bug'

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 08:20 AM PST

Official line says mysterious message was not a malicious attack

Facebook has spoken out on the recent attack on founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s official fan page stating “a bug” was to blame for an errant message that appeared to come from the young billionaire.

Having originally failed to comment on the apparent hack to Zuckerberg’s fan profile, Facebook has since issued an official statement claiming: "A bug enabled status postings by unauthorised people on a handful of pages” It went on to reassure the millions of Facebook users: “The bug has been fixed."

The out of place message caused further privacy and security concerns for the world’s largest social network with the reported bug allowing one unknown user to impersonate Zuckerberg and leave the message: “Let the hacking begin: If Facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn't Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a ‘social business’ the way Nobel Price winner Muhammad Yunus described it? http://bit.ly/fs6rT3 What do you think? #hackercup2011.”

Quashing suggestions that the message was posted following a malicious hack of the Facebook system, the internet giant has, in the past days, also denied rumours of any upcoming HTC manufactured Facebook-branded smartphones.

Despite the denials, Facebook has announced it is to host an exclusive launch event this coming Monday, January 31st, with “senior FB people attending and an announcement as well.”

What would you like to see emerge from Monday’s mysterious Facebook event, Facebook phones, Skype compatibility? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest live from the event.

Weird News: Facebook Wedding, $100 iFine

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 08:00 AM PST

This week's more eccentric tech happenings

Social media wedding

A Twitter-Facebook wedding isn’t perhaps what every girl dreams of but that’s exactly how one couple tied the knot in December. Everything from the invitations to the vows were tweeted and announced on Facebook. “I now pronounce you man and wife” John Smith and 4 others likes this. #weird

Robot Camel Jockeys
An arcade just isn’t the same without the miniature camel races but have you ever wondered what it’d look like if real camels were used instead? Well it might look something like this with the addition of robot jockeys packing tazer guns just in case those lazy camels start to slack.

Big Apple’s iFine

In the UK we’re not allowed by law to use our mobile phones or iPods whilst driving but in the US, New York Senator Carl Kruger is proposing fining New Yorkers for doing so on the street. That’s right, Mr Kruger, that’s Mr not Dr, wants to implement a $100 fine for talking on the phone or using iPod whilst walking.

Jet-powered water cannon

Good job it’s the winter and there’s not a hosepipe ban as the water board would go nuts if they saw China’s Lioyang City’s latest addition to their fire engines; a jet propelled water cannon that sprays four tons of water per minute.

Find Your Car

It’s a common occurrence in multi-story car parks all across the world; people wandering around aimlessly, hoping that their car is nearby after forgetting where the parked it. Now, though, a car park in Santa Monica, California, could put a stop to people adopting the ‘sprinker’ method of finding their car by repeatedly pressing the key fob with a parking tracker that tells you exactly where your car is parked and how to get find it.

iPad jacket

Want to take your iPad out with you but don’t fancy carrying a bag? Well the people over at Alphyn Industries have a solution in the form of a jacket with a kangaroo-like pouch for your ‘joey’ that you can just unzip when you want to use it whilst drawbridge-like straps provide an ample work surface.

And Finally...

Hands-free with a difference
In a similar vein to the iPad jacket, The Vyne is an invention which fuses clothing and technology together, not to mention laziness. The eel-like strap lets you watch a film on your iPod without having to go through the odious task of actually holding all of 140 grams.

Apple iPhone 5 release date to see NFC technology inclusion

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 06:52 AM PST

Apple to add NFC to upcoming iDevices

Repeatedly rumoured to be hitting both the upcoming iPad 2 and mooted iPhone 5, Apple looks all the more likely to incorporate Near Field Communication technology into its future portable devices as the company advertises a number of NFC roles.

The three new roles, two for managers of global payment platforms and one seeking out a test engineer for iPhone hardware all hint towards the iPhone 5 sporting NFC wireless technologies allowing for contact-free payments to be made with user’s iDevices.

Whilst Apple is targeting the role of test engineer for iPhone hardware at someone who possesses background experience in ICT (information and communication technology) and RFID (radio frequency identification), both basis form for NFC, the managerial roles will be tasked with “the analysis and development of new payment types and processes.”

Although not concrete evidence of the upcoming inclusion of NFC technologies in future iPhone and iPad iterations, Apple’s biggest hint yet of wireless payment making it to Cupertino designed products comes shortly after Everything Everywhere, the mash-up of Orange and T-Mobile announced it was to introduce widespread NFC payment plans this spring.

Is NFC a key component of future portable technologies or just the latest in a long line of passing buzz words? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

NGP will not cost $599 says Sony President

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:44 AM PST

Shu Yoshida ensures you won't have to break the bank for the next PSP

Sony has confirmed that the NGP (PSP 2) will not set gamers back $599, and the Next Generation Portable will be "affordable" when it's available.

Speaking to Game Informer, Sony Computer Entertainment President of Worldwide Studios, Shu Yoshida said, “from the very beginning of the project - since 2008 - pricing was one of the considerations that we had.”

The NGP has yet to be given an official launch price by Sony and Yoshida revealed that it is "not going to be $599."

UK game publisher Codemasters does not expect buying a NGP to break the bank, and believes it will have some parity with Nintendo 3DS pricing. Talking to CVG, Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens said "My hope [for the NGP price] is sub £200," adding, "but I suspect something in the 229 - 249 pounds to be more likely."

In other NGP-related news, there are doubts whether the console will launch in all territories in time for the slated 'late 2011' release.

In an interview with Engadget, Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton revealed,"You want to have a worldwide simultaneous launch. Having said that, this'll be our sixth platform launch, and it's very difficult to have the quantities to be able to launch on a worldwide basis on the same date. So while that's the goal, the reality might be something different. I think our goal is, we would get at least one territory out by the end of holiday 2011."

T3 spoke to Tim Ingham, online editor of CVG who shared his thoughts on whether the NGP would make a global release:

"Sony has indicated that it won’t be a simultaneous global launch, so no-one can be certain it will hit Europe in time for Christmas. Japan is a safe bet to get it first, and my guess, backed by previous console iterations like PS3 and PSP Go, is that one of the US or Europe will get it the wrong side of December 25."

Are you looking forward to maybe getting your hands on the Sony NGP (PSP 2) in 2011? Lets us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

The Daily release date officially set as February 2nd

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:26 AM PST

Apple and News Corp merger incoming

Following numerous delays and repeated near appearances The Daily, the iPad newspaper collaboration between News Corp and Apple is to be officially launched on February 2nd.

Announced via an event invitation sent to industry press, Rupert Murdoch will take to the stage of the Guggenheim Museum in New York next Wednesday to officially out The Daily iPad newspaper alongside the subscription-based app service Apple is said to be launching alongside the publication and which was pegged as the cause of the most recent delayed arrival on January 19th.

Whilst the launch announcement gives little else away on the upcoming Daily release, the new arrival date fits with the revelations Rupert Murdoch’s son and News Corp head James Murdoch made earlier this week when he said: “I think should be launching in the next few weeks.”

Expanding on The Daily at the DLD Conference in Munich recently, Murdoch Jnr proclaimed: “It’s going to be a brand new piece of journalism. We want to get out there quickly, at a good price, and I think it will surprise people. I also think it will succeed or fail on the journalism part, not the bells and whistles.”

Leaking the yet to be confirmed Daily pricing Murdoch followed on to say: “We wanted it to have a very good price, affordable for most people, at 99 cents a week. It lowers the barrier for people to enjoy high quality journalism.”

Will you be giving your iPad a Daily filling come the launch next Wednesday, February 2nd? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

BlackBerry Messenger 6 to have social gaming built in?

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:18 AM PST

BlackBerry to break the chains of BBM in new iteration.

Rumours are afoot that RIM is set to overall the popular BlackBerry Messenger platform to include social gaming for the first time.

The SMS service which allows BlackBerry smartphone users to engage in group SMS chats and share pictures in a sort of secret BlackBerry club that the rest of civilisation is allowed no part is one that BlackBerry users have flouted in the face of the supersonic smartphones - even though it's not that big of a deal.

Up until now, the service has been all business, in true BlackBerry style, but reports emerging from an Indonesian source suggest that games and fun-times are on the way, with Gameatchi said to be developing for the platform.

According to the reports, BBM6 users will be able to use their username as a gamertag, and when tasks are completed in these games it will show up in the user's status. It is also suggested that the new BBM, for phones running BlackBerry OS 5 and upwards, will enable larger group chats and cross chats between users.

No word yet on when the new iteration of the App will be available, but it looks like RIM is ready to throw the shackles off it's BlackBerry handsets like a drunken rendez-vous at an office party.

BlackBerry Curve Touch leaks ahead of MWC 2011

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:15 AM PST

Not a keyboard in sight for RIM's next smartphone

The BlackBerry Curve has found favour with a lot of people since its launch due to its decent keyboard, workmanlike-yet-useable OS and a mid-range price that’s seen it on a myriad tariffs for free.

It seems that maker RIM is set to take one of those key strengths away from the Curve’s follow up though, as these leaked shots from CrackBerry.com show. This is the BlackBerry Curve Touch, an upcoming handset featuring a fully touch-based interface in lieu of a keyboard.

Spec-wise we’re looking at a mid-range 800MHz Qualcomm processor with 512MB of RAM, powering the 3.25-inch HGVA touchscreen. There’s also inbuilt NFC tech, GPS and a 5-Meg camera.

Look out for the Curve Touch at Mobile World Congress next month. Would you be keen on a keyboard-less BlackBerry or should RIM stick to what they know? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Amazon Kindle 3 begins to outsell paperbacks

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:08 AM PST

Kindle 3 power: Paperbacks playing second fiddle thanks to e-book download figures

Amazon’s Kindle e-book is proving to be a popular choice with our friends across the pond with last quarter’s figures showing that books for the e-reader are outselling paperbacks.

The Seattle-based online retailer announced that for every 100 paperbacks sold, 115 e-books were sold and that’s excluding free downloads.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said: “Last July we announced that Kindle books had passed hardcovers and predicted that Kindle would surpass paperbacks in the quarter of this year.

“So this milestone has come even sooner than we expected.”

Coupled with money being spent on discounting, the recent acquisitions of LoveFilm and Diapers.com and the building of new depots and and unanticipated drop in sales, Amazon’s shares have fallen 9%.

Flip Wi-Fi incoming

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:00 AM PST

FCC filing points to spanking new version of cammie.

The Flip might have helped kick off the craze for bargain bucket camcorders, but it’s certainly been gazumped by killer rivals from Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic. So now Flip’s owner, Cisco, is firing back with a Wi-Fi version.

The news comes via a FCC filing from across the pond, which tells us the new shooter will come loaded with N standard wireless, as well as HDMI and the ubiquitous flip-put USB stick.

Sadly, there are no pictures of the new effort, but expect it to keep that same small time plasticky look in order to keep the price as low as week’s shopping at Lidl.

The idea of a Flip Wi-Fi certainly makes sense, with the possibilities of direct uploading to YouTube and Facebook bound to excite ‘the kids’. For more on this and the rest of today’s gadget news, hit up our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nokia smartphone share slips

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 02:22 AM PST

Slump means Nokia needs to change faster says new boss.

Nokia’s smartphone share slumped in the last quarter of 2010, with Espoo’s own estimates showing it fell from a healthy 40 per cent during the same period in 2009 to 31 per cent in 2010.

Sales of Nokia smartphones during the same quarter were actually up 36 per cent year on year. But with Android and Apple both activating over 200,000 new users daily, Nokia seemingly can’t keep up with the pace.

One slice of good news came from Symbian 3, with over 5 million phones packing the new-look OS now in the wild. However, new Nokia boss Stephen Elop has admitted that its quarterly stats make for bad reading and has called for the mobile maker to make swift adjustments.

Saying Nokia had, “…a fundamental competitive problem overall,” Elop added, "In short, the industry's changed and now it's time for Nokia to change faster.”

This year’s MWC promises to be massive for Nokia. MeeGo needs to hit the spot and it must show up with phones that can at least match the slew of Android handsets that will be on show. Can it make a comeback? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

HTC Facebook phone does not exist, says Facebook

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST

Staffer dismisses rumours of phone as 'overblown'.

Gossip about a HTC Facebook phone has been rife this week, but the social network has moved to calm claims that it’s done a deal with the Taiwanese tech titan.

Dan Rose, Facebook’s head of business development, told a gathering of hacks yesterday that such a phone simply didn’t exist. "The rumours around there being something more to this HTC device are overblown.”

He added, “This is really just another example of a manufacturer who has taken our public APIs and integrated them into their device in an interesting way." When asked flat out if the phone would be Facebook-branded, Rose answered with an emphatic, “No.”

So that’s that. Or is it? HTC may well have that very phone ready to roll at MWC, but it won’t be slapped with a Facebook logo. All will be revealed at the Barcelona gathering in two weeks time.

Samsung Galaxy Tab passes two million mark

Posted: 27 Jan 2011 11:43 PM PST

News comes after impressive run-up to Christmas for iPad rival.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab has passed the two million mark, nearly three months after it first hit gadget emporia around the world. Sammy says the numbers are down to the fact it flogs its iPad rival in 94 countries via over 200 mobile networks.

The figure is all the more impressive when you consider Samsung only announced it had sold 1.5 million Galaxy Tabs at CES three weeks ago, having hit the million mark ahead of schedule in early December.

Word on the web is that the Galaxy Tab 2 will be making an appearance at Samsung’s MWC press bash on 13 February, suggesting the FroYo-packing original might not be long for this life. Either way, the Galaxy Tab has shown Android lovers that there’s a decent alternative to the iPad.

Sony NGP: not all models will have 3G

Posted: 27 Jan 2011 11:26 PM PST

3G data plans still being worked out, but expect to pay says Sony.

Sony’s Euro head honcho, Andrew House, has explained that there’ll be more than one version of the Sony NGP when it lands around Christmas 2011. And importantly, while they’ll pack Wi-Fi, only one will come with 3G.

In an interview with the chaps at Eurogamer, House said, “"The first thing to clarify, which I'm not sure the presentation did a perfect job of doing today, is that all of the devices will have Wi-Fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G."

"So the user gets a choice. Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience. 3G will be a subset of that."

House said 3G data plans would be revealed nearer launch, which suggests this is something tech experts and pundits will spend most of 2011 gossiping about. Either way, will you want to stump up monthly for yet another gadget? Or will a W-Fi only NGP do for you?
