News@8pm: iPad 2 to host SD card slot and Kinect for girls

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Almost as quick as the iPad hit the UK shores, talk of an updated version, the iPad 2, has sparked rumours of a host of new features. Latest pegged for addition is an in-built SD card slot, that is set to hit the upcoming tablet for its Arpil launch. Another prospective new model that has been the subject of conjecture is the latest incarnation of the ever-popular iPhone. Much like the iPad 2, the iPhone 5 is to adopt a new slimmer design. However, the changes won’t just be aesthetic. Inside, a new A5 CPU with a multi-core chip will bring the iPhone up-to-date with the lines current powerhouse, the LG Optimus 2X.

Beatles fans have been able to twist and shout with the iconic band’s iTunes download figure’s soaring past the five million mark. All this came after just two months since the lads from Liverpool’s entire back catalogue of 13 studio albums was added to the Apple store. Neither twisting nor shouting though is Nokia’s attempt to tap into the music download market which looks to have failed with the OVI service seemingly unpopular. The free music service was launched in 2008 as a potential competitor to iTunes but restrictive DRM and older handsets at launch contributed to a lack of growth.

Apple’s CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs has taken a leave of absence due to illness. Jobs informed Apple employees of his temporary departure via a letter just days before the California-based company’s earnings report release scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday 18th January. On a slightly more positive CEO note, Microsoft Chief Exec Steve Ballmer has come out swinging, sadly at his own product stating that Kinect is aimed at girls not the family-friendly unit is it being touted as.

Apple’s ‘app’ store is approaching its 10 billionth download with a prize waiting for the person who hits that milestone. The lucky person who manages to download the 10 billionth app will be awarded a $10,000 (£6,293) iTunes gift card, enough to buy around 1,000 albums. Samsung are attempting to follow in Apple’s footsteps with the Samsung TV App Store having recorded more than two million app downloads to date.

Next gen Apple iPod Touch to host glasses-free 3D display

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 08:40 AM PST

Upcoming iPod Touch to add 3D gaming credentials

With the expected arrival of the iPad 2 just weeks away and the iPhone 5 already on the horizon, the next generation iPod Touch has snuck under the radar with latest reports suggesting the upcoming Apple PMP will feature a glasses-free 3D display.

Japanese blog Macotakara claims to have been informed by one of Apple’s display manufacturers that the fifth generation iPod Touch, expected to follow Apple’s strict product cycles and launch in September, will come equipped with a Nintendo 3DS inspired sans-specs 3D screen.

Whilst this rumour must be taken with a pinch of salt, a hefty one at that if Apple is to tarnish its ultra slim, perfectly styled finish bestowed upon the iPod Touch, the inclusion of a 3D display on the pocket-friendly device would open it up to a feast of new app-based possibilities.

Unveiled alongside a heavily updated iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle the latest rendition of the Touch saw the device gain front and rear facing cameras along with Apple’s FaceTime video calling technology and a new, slimmer form.

Apple was shook to its core earlier today when it was announced that its charismatic and formidable leader and CEO Steve Jobs is to take another medical-induced leave of absence. The cancer survivor who in 2009 underwent a liver transplant wrote to Apple employees revealing he would be absent from the company until further notice.

What features would you like to see added to the next generation iPod Touch? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest rumours and releases for the next gen Touch.

Samsung Smart TV app downloads top 2 million mark

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:58 AM PST

Public adopt internet-connected TV possibilities

Samsung has announced it has surpassed a new landmark in the TV app market with more than 2 million television-bound applications having now been downloaded from the Samsung TV App Store.

Whilst this is some distance off the 10 billion app downloads the Apple App Store is due to hit in the coming days, the Samsung TV service has doubled its level of downloaded content in a little over a month having hit the 1 million download mark early in December.

Having taken 268 days to chalk up its first million downloads, increased public knowledge and festive period hardware sales have seen the TV-specific app service reach its second million downloads in just 53 days. With 12 million Samsung-branded, internet-connected TVs expected to be shifted in 2011, the popularity and availability of TV-based applications is expected to rise considerably in the coming months.

Of the 380 Samsung TV apps currently available, an impressive 259 are available for download completely free of charge with a number of movie streaming and social networking applications, such as LoveFilm and Twitter currently proving the biggest hits.

What mobile applications would you most like to see landing on your television sets? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Steve Jobs takes medical leave of absence from Apple

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 06:41 AM PST

Apple head's health forces leave

Apple CEO and formidable front man to the fruity tech company Steve Jobs has announced he is to take a leave of absence effective immediately due to new medical conditions.

Jobs, a survivor of pancreatic cancer who underwent a liver transplant during a six month health related leave back in 2009, revealed his latest temporary departure in a letter to Apple employees just days ahead of the company’s earnings report release scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday January 18th.

"At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company," wrote Jobs to his Apple underlings.

In Jobs’ absence Apple COO Tim Cook will take on the day-to-day responsibilities for the company much like he did in 2009. Discussing his stand-in replacement, Jobs wrote he has "great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011."

Questions now surround how Jobs’ latest leave of absence will affect the company, with Apple stock sure to come under a critical eye, and whether the turtleneck wearing leader will be present to unveil the upcoming iPad 2 expected to be announced on February 1st.

Rounding off his letter to employees, Jobs' concluded: "I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy."

Nike+ GPS app now includes 'Play Tag' feature

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 06:22 AM PST

Avoid being 'it' by outrunning your pals.

iPhone fitness app Nike+ GPS has been updated to allow friends to play 'tag', on their daily runs.

The hugely successful app, which lets runners track distance, time, speed and calories while recording the route on a GPS sensor, now includes the perfect motivational tool of pitting friends against each other, even on solo runs.

Once you've completed your daily jog, the app will ask you if you'd like to 'Play Tag', which involves setting a challenge based on your own run. Your rules can rest on the distance you ran, the time you spent running or the time of day you went for your run. The friend that comes last in the challenge will be 'it'. The game continues until each of the invited runners has completed their run.

We can imagine it'd be great motivation to go that extra mile (literally and figuratively speaking), stay out that extra five minutes or get your behind out of bed a few minutes earlier in order to one-up your running buddies. If you remember from school being 'it' is a nightmare, chasing around the playground while everyone runs away from you. Who on earth wants to reopen those wounds?

Nike+ GPS with Virtual Tag is available to download from the App Store now for £1.19. Check out the video below to see it in action.

The Beatles top 5 million track download mark on iTunes

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 05:07 AM PST

Beatles on iTunes proves mass success

Just two months after the Fab Four first touched down in the digital world of iTunes, it has been revealed that more than 5 million Beatles tracks have been downloaded through the Apple store.

Having popped up on the music download service slightly ahead of the planned grand unveiling, The Beatles’ back catalogue arriving on iTunes was teased by Apple prior to launch with the fruity tech company announcing: “Tomorrow is just another day. That you’ll never forget.”

With all 13 of The Beatles’ digitally remastered studio albums made available with single albums priced at £10.99 a piece, double albums £17.99 each and individual songs available for 99p a pop, the mop-haired Liverpool rockers dominated the iTunes charts before shifting more than 2 million tracks in the first seven days of being on sale.

Speaking on The Beatles hitting iTunes back in November, former Beatles bass player and song writing extraordinaire Sir Paul McCartney said: “We’re really excited to bring the Beatles’ music to iTunes, it’s fantastic to see the songs we originally released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around.”

McCartney’s excitement was echoed by Apple boss Steve Jobs who declared: “We love the Beatles and are honoured and thrilled to welcome them to iTunes.” He added: “It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realising a dream we’ve had since we launched iTunes ten years ago.”

‘Here Comes the Sun’ is reportedly the best selling individual Beatles track on iTunes with ‘Abbey Road’ taking top honours on the album front.

Nokia to pull OVI Music Unlimited

Nokia set to pull OVI Music Unlimited in most markets

Nokia looks set to pull the plug on its ill-fated free music service, OVI Music Unlimited.

The company is to cease bundling the service with new phones in most markets, although customers that have activated their subscription will continue to have access until it expires.

The service launched in 2008, and was originally touted as a competitor to iTunes. However, restrictive DRM and older handsets at launch contributed to a lack of growth.

Nokia will continue to sell phones bundled with free music downloads in China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

Apple iPad 2 launch set for April with in-built SD card slot

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 04:17 AM PST

'Trusted' source outs iPad 2 SD features

Rumoured to feature everything from a 9.7-inch Retina display to front and rear facing cameras, the upcoming iPad 2 is set to spot an in-built SD card slot, sources have revealed.

Tech blog Engadget has declared that a ‘trusted’ source close to the matter has confirmed that the imminent arrival of the second generation Apple tablet will see the device’s sleek and stylish brushed metal body be afflicted by an inch long gash capable of supporting SD card file transfers.

Whilst the inclusion of an SD card slot is not quite the USB port addition many of iPad users were hoping for, the slimmer form factor that the iPad 2 is set to adopt could have drastically influenced the form of portable media expansion the tablet device is physically capable of supporting.

Expected to be unveiled on February 1st ahead of a global rollout in April, the iPad 2 is strongly believed to come boasting dual-camera credentials with Apple’s FaceTime video calling technology touching down on its tablet device for the first time.

What features would you most like to see included in the second generation of the hugely successful Apple iPad? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the upcoming iPad 2 arrival.

Nokia and Intel OS coming soon

The iPad 2 may be promising a slimmer design and new features, but what would you say to the option of no fewer than three operating systems on your tablet? Because the Evolve Maestro III, currently running Android and Windows 7, will soon add Nokia and Intel’s offering MeeGo to the mix.

Xbox Kinect gaming is for girls announces Microsoft CEO

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 02:56 AM PST

Kinect targets girls as Ballmer declares "Xbox isn't a gaming console"

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has openly suggested that the company’s recently released controller-free motion gaming peripheral Kinect is targeted at girls, quashing Microsoft’s official line that the device will appeal to the entire family.

Launched for use with the Xbox 360 games console, or ‘family entertainment centre’ as Ballmer would have it known, the hands-free gaming sensor sold more than one million units in its opening 10 days with Ballmer taking to the stage at the Consumer Electronics Show recently to declare Kinect sales have topped the 8 million unit mark since its November arrival.

Talking with USA Today, Ballmer sent the Xbox PR contingent into frantic overdrive when he announced: "...you go to your average 15-year-old boy, and he will say 'I'll take an Xbox,' adding: "I want that average 15-year-old girl as excited about the Kinect, and we haven't done as good a job drawing in that broader set of demographics."

With launch titles for Kinect including Kinectimals and Dance Central further plumped by Get Fit with Mel B and Dance Paradise, it is clear to see that not only has Kinect failed to appease hardcore gamers but is pitching itself heavily to a female following.

Attempting to correct his tagline-contradicting revelation, Ballmer went on to state: "Xbox isn't a gaming console. Xbox is a family entertainment centre. It's a place to socialise. It's a place to watch TV... we have Hulu coming. It's the only system where you are the controller. Your voice, your gestures, your body."

Has Kinect failed to impress you or landed daintily and with grace as an addition to your home entertainment setup? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

App Store: 10 billionth download is imminent

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 02:52 AM PST

Whoever makes that big download will win a $10,000 iTunes voucher

Apple’s succeeded in smashing a few big App milestones in its time and now it’s on target for another one within the next 24 hours. The company has put a real-time ticker on its site to countdown to what will be the App Store’s 10 billionth download.

It’s a mighty number that truly shows the store’s meteoric rise and success since its opening in 2008. To celebrate, Apple says it’ll gift the 10-billionth downloader an iTunes Voucher worth $10,000 (£6293).

At the rate the ticker is going, it seems as though Apple will hit that magic number at some point today (17th Jan). What would you spend all that iTunes credit on? Have a look at the T3 App Chart’s iPhone favourites and let us know on Twitter.

Apple iPhone 5 to get 'completely redesigned'

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 02:45 AM PST

iPhone 5 rumour mill gathers pace

The Apple iPhone 5 is set for a major design and hardware overhaul according to a leak which also suggests the iPhone 4 successor will launch in the summer.

Engadget has spoken to multiple sources who claim that a complete redesign of the handset body is on the cards and that the device is already being tested by staff at Apple HQ.

Inside the iPhone 5, we can expect a new A5 CPU boasting a multi-core chip bringing it in line with current processor powerhouse, the LG Optimus 2X. Apple is also being tipped to swap wireless chipset providers moving from Infineon to Qualcomm, likely in a bid to avoid connectivity issues previously faced with the iPhone 4.

Talk of the iPhone 5 has intensified in recent weeks and last week we reported that patents filed by Apple hinted that the iPhone 5 would get a slimmer design, and possibly incorporate a solar charging system.

An iPhone 5 summer release would fall in place with Apple's usual cycle for its jewel in the crown, and we fully expect one or two more 'leaks' of information to emerge until then.

What are you hoping to see from the Apple iPhone 5? Lets us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

Computers for £98 to bridge the digital divide

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST

Can the digital divide become a thing of the past with schemes like this?

With over 9 million British adults unable to access broadband internet, a new scheme is being introduced to bridge the technology gap between them and internet adult users.

Martha Lane Fox who heads Race Online 2012 - an initiative for digital inclusion - is hoping to offer a scheme by which cheap computers will be sold to these 9.2 million British adults. They will be sold through 60 UK online centres and Remploy and the estimate is to sell over 8,000 this year.

The package will cost £98 and is on its initial phase, but Ms Lane Fox hopes to spread it over the country.

According to the Telegraph, she said, "Motivation and inspiration are still two of the biggest barriers [to using the internet], but clearly perception of price is another big deal for people. A good price point is certainly part of what helps people get online."

Do you think packages like this are a step forward to including more people in the internet culture? Tell us what you think at T3's Twitter and Facebook pages, and follow us for daily tech talk.

Asus to launch app store for its Android tablets?

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:35 AM PST

Asus has an Android app store in the works?

Asus might well be working on an Android app store of its own.

Nothing official has been announced with regard to the dedicated Android app store. There's also an ongoing debate as to whether their new tablets announced at CES 2011 will ship with Honeycomb or not. Google allows Android Marketplace access for tablets with phone functionality or those that will eventually get Honeycomb.

Their trio of new tablets will land in UK towards the latter half of 2011 - Wi-fi models only. Their 3G models will release one quarter after the Wi-fi models, so we may see them only in 2012 or around Christmas 2011.

Asus, with its own Android app store, would pass the restriction placed by Google like Toshiba and Archos has already done. In addition, if the new tablets don't have Honeycomb, then the dedicated app store would ensure their customers aren't left behind.

Watch this space for any official announcements.

Which of Asus' offerings at CES 2011 caught your fancy? Tell us on our Twitter and Facebook pages and stay tuned in for your regular dose of tech news.

New silver Xbox 360 controller incoming

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 11:40 PM PST

Will gamers fork over £44.99 to buy the new controller?

Microsoft has slapped a price tag and release date on its new silver Xbox 360 controller.

The silver controller is already available in the US, with an expected landing on Blighty shores on 4 March 2011 for the price of £44.99.

For that price, gamers will even get a Play and Charge add-on kit.

It was announced back in August 2010 and features a D-pad (probably the most important feature in the new controller), which offers accurate control and can be the standard 'plus' or disc.

It's also designed so as to be best suited for fighting games, and the new d-pad allows for easier usage. Other than the d-pad, the changes seem cosmetic, with the sleek silver look highlighting the difference.

Would you be buying the new silver controller and is the price worth it? Let us know at T3's Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for the latest news in the world of tech.
