Apple iPhone 5 continues to steal digital column inches despite being nothing more than hope and expectation. Today saw the mooted device pegged with a May unveiling and production run ahead of a June iPhone 5 release date. In other Apple-based news health-impaired Steve Jobs has been callously attacked by Netgear CEO Patrick Lo at a product unveiling in Australia.
With the expected arrival of the iPad 2 now just days away new rumours and claims of the mooted tablet have seen some features added whilst others are axed. Reportedly off the hit list is the repeatedly suggested SD card slot inclusion whilst a anti-reflective display, dual-cameras and faster chip are all given the nod of approval.
Facebook Places Deals has officially hit the UK with the social network’s location-based deals offering landing on mobile applications today with a number of well known brands getting in on the money-saving act. One other hugely popular entity making news today was app sensation Angry Birds which has announced a Rio movie tie-in to hit app stores this March. Blackberry top iPhone as most popular smartphone of 2010 Posted: 31 Jan 2011 09:16 AM PST HTC and Apple left in RIM's BlackBerry wake Despite reports of a number of multinational companies making the business switch from BlackBerry to iPhone in the past year, RIM’s handsets have reportedly taken the UK top spot as the most successful smartphone platform of 2010.
Data collected by GfK from a year of consumer sales channels, network providers and third-party retailers, has shown that BlackBerry handsets shift more units than HTC devices and the highly desired range of Apple iPhones, securing 28.2 per cent of all smartphone sales in the process.
Recent releases of the BlackBerry Torch and the BlackBerry 8520 have helped shape the company’s impressive 2010 sales haul with RIM proudly proclaiming there are now more than 33 million BB Messenger users across the globe with BlackBerry handsets reportedly accounting for the largest user base actively engaging in social outlets Facebook and Twitter from their mobile devices.
Although claiming the coveted top spot for 2010, RIM’s market leading range of smartphones will face stiff competition to retain the crown for 2011. Despite having recorded a 60 per cent increase to BlackBerry App World sales in the past 12 months, the BlackBerry app offering, which numbers around the 17,000 application mark is lagging far behind its iOS and Android counterparts both of which feature more than 200,000 of the handset fillers.

Windows Phone 7 update to officially launch February 7th Posted: 31 Jan 2011 07:49 AM PST Cut and Paste to hit Windows Phone 7 next week Early adopters of Windows Phone 7, the latest mobile operating system to come from Microsoft, are to receive the OS’s first major update next week, new reports suggest.
Believed to be preparing for a February 7th arrival the Phone 7 update, officially codenamed ‘NoDo’, will see the currently limited range of compatible handsets add a number of key new features to their respective bags of tricks with the ever handy copy and paste function taking centre stage.
Whilst the NoDo update will no doubt appease a number of Windows Phone 7 handset users, the unconfirmed timing of the reported release, based on “a number of French sites” by blog site Winrumours, is a surprise to many with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer preparing to take to the stage of Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona just one week later on February 14th.
Whether it lands on February 7th or during the course of MWC 2011, stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the Windows Phone 7 overhaul and sign up to the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds to share your thoughts on what you think is missing from the Microsoft OS.

Andy Gray and Richard Keys funniest quotes app launched Posted: 31 Jan 2011 07:45 AM PST No, it's not a collection of Gray and Keys' misoginistic rantings. "Did you smash it, Redknapp?" and "Do me a favour, love?" have entered into football folklore following Sky Sports' recent sexismgate, so it's ironic that a new footy quotes app has been launched for iPhone starring the condemned pair of presenters.
Richard Keys and Andy Gray are the animated hosts of the "Funniest Football Quotes" app for iPhone, featuring some silly soundbites from some of the game's comedic talents. However, it seems that the funniest thing about this app is the timing of its launch.
In today's press release, developers Quapps Interactive were very keen to make it clear that it's not an app making fun of the disgraced duo, but features them actually behaving themselves and doing their jobs.
"We are fully aware of the limelight surrounding Andy and Richard at the moment and would like to stress that this application has absolutely nothing to do with what has happened this past week or so. This is an entertainment application with Andy and Richard doing what they do best... talking about football."
Apparently the app features Gray and Keys uttering some of their most famous catchphrases that can also be used as ringtones, like Gray's "Take a bow, son."... What, no "Charlotte, tuck this in for us love?" While "ahhhh, you beauty" would make a great ringtone, we'd prefer "A woman linesman? The game's gone mad."
The Funniest Football Quotes app is available now for iPhone and it's "hanging out of the back" of the App Store for £1.19.

Sony PS3 firmware update to bring cloud-based saving Posted: 31 Jan 2011 07:10 AM PST Firmware update 3.60 to bring "Online Saving" to PS3 Pre-empting the arrival of the recently unveiled Sony NGP, formerly known as the PSP 2, Sony has announced that PS3 gamers will soon be able to forgo their console’s hard drives and save gaming content directly to cloud based servers.
To be initially rolled out exclusively to paying PlayStation Plus subscribers the cloud-based saving service will allow users to save games from the PlayStation Network to the cloud from their PS3 consoles and future internet-connected PlayStation branded devices such as the recently unveiled NGP (Next Generation Portable).
Expected to land in the coming weeks courtesy of firmware update 3.60, Online Saving will in the future allow gamers to pick up gameplay exactly where they left off no matter where or on what console they resume play.
Does Online Saving sound like a feature you have long been coveting for the Sony PlayStation 3? Share your thoughts on the upcoming service via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPhone 5 release date to follow May official unveiling Posted: 31 Jan 2011 06:27 AM PST iPad 2 to enter production in the coming days Apple is reported to be preparing the first production runs of the iPhone 5 for May after it emerged the Cupertino tech giant plans to ship 10 million of the fifth-generation handsets for launch.
If true the reports from China’s Commercial Times would see the mooted iPhone 5 following Apple’s annual product cycles and making a widely expected June or July 2011 global arrival.
Repeated Apple manufacturers Foxconn and Pegatron are both highly tipped to be involved in the production of the upcoming iPad 2 and iPhone 5 devices with the upcoming Apple blower to be unveiled this May to the critical eye of the media and consumers. Possibly the company’s most important handset unveiling to date, the iPhone 5 will have to face fierce speculation following the antenna issues that plagued the arrival of the iPhone 5 and increased competition from Android powered HTC and Samsung branded devices.
Which future iDevice are you most eagerly awaiting, the second-generation iPad 2 of latest addition to the hugely successful iPhone range? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Steve Jobs health issues used in attack on Apple by Netgear Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:12 AM PST Apple and Microsoft come under fire from Patrick Lo Apple CEO Steve Jobs has come under fire from Netgear Global Chairman and CEO Patrick Lo despite the turtleneck-loving Apple head currently absent from the company due to health reasons.
Not perturbed by Jobs’ dwindling health Lo laid into the cancer survivor at a product launch in Australia yesterday with a number of insensitive comments reportedly declaring Apple’s closed software nature was based solely on Job’s over-inflated ego and would ultimate become the company’s downfall with Android’s open nature to take the foreground.
Steve Jobs announced earlier this month that he was to take an indefinite leave of absence from Apple to concentrate on his health. With COO Tim Cook set to take the day-to-day reigns of the company, Jobs' absence echoes back to recent years when he has been forced into medical leave by pancreatic cancer and an urgent liver transplant.
Keen to get in every possible jab before the bell rang Lo turned to Apple’s mobile bug-bear Flash for his final blow. He said: "What's the reason for him to trash Flash? There's no reason other than ego."
Not wanting to let any of the big boys get away scot-free Lo then turned his sharp-tongued attention to Microsoft and the recent arrival of the Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system. Condemning the industry and publicly acclaimed OS to failure Lo announced: "Microsoft is over -- game over, from my point of view.”
Were Patrick Lo’s comments in poor taste or an acceptable point of view willingly shared with the public? Let us know your thoughts on the matter via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo 3DS eShop won't be ready for launch Posted: 31 Jan 2011 03:00 AM PST May update will see redesign games store land on handheld. Nintendo has confirmed that its new look eShop will not be sitting pretty on the 3DS when it launches in March. The new store, a complete revamp on the DSi shop, will instead be coming as part of a software update in May.
In a conference call explaining the delay, Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata said the gaming giant wanted to get the experience right on its next-gen handheld. “We will be running a drastically redesigned shop for Nintendo 3DS in which you can more comfortably purchase software through downloads."
The 3DS is set to launch on these shores on 25 March, following a massive unveiling in Amsterdam this month. Titles up for grabs include PES 2011 and Street Fighter IV.
Will this stop you buying a 3DS at launch? Or is a virtual store just the icing on the cake you can do without? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 02:01 AM PST SIM opening is being moved, with SD support missing. The iPad 2 will not have a SD card slot as has been widely rumoured. That’s according to, “…a person AppleInsider trusts on matters such as these,” who claims the slot seen on early iPad 2 cases is actually for a SIM card.
The source says that the SIM slot is being moved to the top of the iPad from its current position on the left-hand side of the device. This apparently explains why some other cases which have been spotted don’t have the opening, as Wi-Fi only models won’t need it.
SD support is perhaps the biggest bone of contention when it comes to the iPad 2. If Apple were to include it, it would make uploading to the device easier, although it could compromise the simple lines of the sleek device.
Do you want to see SD support on the iPad? Or are you happy without? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nokia E7 not coming until April Posted: 31 Jan 2011 01:00 AM PST Worrying hold-up for Nokia as it looks to recover lost ground. It seems the Nokia E7 has hit the skids. Again. The Symbian 3 cell, unveiled way back at Nokia World in September and slated for a January release after months of delays, has once again been held up.
Online gadget emporium Expansys says it won’t be shipping the device until 12 April, over seven months since the phone’s announcement. By that stage you can expect the 4-inch touchscreen/slider hybrid to have been well and truly outdated at Mobile World Congress.
Three has already pushed back its E7 plans until April, meaning Expansys’ release date is unlikely to come forward. At a time when Nokia is losing smartphone share rapidly, this is another huge setback and one which smacks of the disastrous N8 launch last year.
Will you be getting a Nokia E7. Or has the Finnish phone maker delayed its latest killer smartphone too long? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad 2: anti-reflective screen, dual cameras, faster chip Posted: 30 Jan 2011 11:42 PM PST Updates will see screen tweaked but resolution will stay the same. With the iPad 2 still under lock and key at Cupertino, the rumour mill has once again kicked into gear this morning, with yet another analyst weighing in with his tuppence worth on the next-gen slate.
Ming-Chi Kuo from Concord Studies in Taiwan claims that the screen will not use Retina Display tech, instead focusing on anti-reflective features which will make the iPad 2 easier to use out and about.
On top of that, Kuo adds, "The most important reason why iPad 2 won’t have retinal [sic] display is yield rate of panel making. At this point, making high resolution and bright IPS/FFS panel is not easy and the production volume and cost couldn’t meet Apple’s requirements."
Size is also set to be a headline grabber, with the iPad 2 up to 35 per cent thinner than the current model. The processor is also set to be upped to 1.2GHz, a tad slower than some other Apple watchers are predicting.
Bunkum? Or the real deal? Tell us what you think of the latest iPad 2 rumours and what you want from the next-gen Apple slate on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
