News@8pm: iOS 4.3 updates and new Blackberry leaked

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

More rumours surrounding the much anticipated Apple iPad 2. According to some reports, the new Apple tablet will not feature the usual home button with the iOS 4.3 update, instead being replaced, possibly, with the multitouch capabilties which are already well known on Apple devices. Apple's iOS 4.3 has taken some more interesting steps today, as developers look to wet our apetite in reinforcing some speculation surrounding what features will actually be available on the newest version of iOS. Some of these features include the ability for the iPhone to convert its 3G connection into a personal wireless hotspot so you can enjoy additional online devices.

Nintendos 3DS designer, Shigeru Miyamoto wet our apetite today by giving hints that the 3DS will be able to support filming 3D video using its dual cameras. The dual screen, dual camera gaming device can already take 3D photos, but with the edition of 3D video, will this further hamper on battery life and performance? Sony announced today that it has filed a restraining order of the hackers who allegedly broke their coding on its previously impenetrable Sony PS3. Head hacker, George Hotz spoke out to the legal action saying is "doesn't have any basis". If found guilty, they face bans on hacking and distributing their software produced from their hacks.

Search engine giant, Google has released its newest app, Google Translate. Operating on Android phones, the app is designed to help you speak the lingo no matter what country you're in, by translating words by speaking into the handset and replies with your chosen language, sacrebleu! C'est fantastique, non? Music streaming wonder, Spotify is now available on Shazam iPhone and Android apps. The new play in Spotify feature will let you chuck the beats out from last nights impressive moves on the dancefloor. So far the app is only available to premium members in seven countries in Europe, including the UK, Sweden and Norway. But fear not owners of the free Shazam app, it will be available in Q1 for you to enjoy.

A new Blackberry has been leaked onto our screens in the form of the Blackberry Dakota. Makers, RIM, are rumoured to marry together a signature Blackberry keyboard and a more modern touchscreen, measuring at 2.8 inches, so you can type and touch at your pleasure. In other rumour news, HP have hinted towards a possible release date for its iPad rival, as they are set to jump onto the band wagon along with every other man and his portable tablet. The company bought mobile company, Palm last year. It was only a matter of time before they put together Palms operating system know how and HP's computer knowledge to rival the big dog Apple iPad.

Caterham-Lola SP/300R: First pics revealed

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:49 AM PST

Another car show, another round of impossibly teched-out automobiles.

As we may have let on during last year's Paris Motor Show, we're quite fond of a bit of automative madness here at T3 Towers, and if the Caterham-Lola SP/300R is anything to go on, this year's annual Autosport Show at the NEC will be a worthy bedfellow to that Parisian parade of electric supercars, gull-winged hatches and iPhone-controlled scooters.

Click here to launch the Caterham-Lola SP/300R gallery.

Caterham haven't done the whole "sports concept" schtick before, but for a first attempt it's pretty daring. It's got a four-cylinder turbocharged engine and 300bhp. Not that impressive until you consider the SP/300R weighs in at under 600kg, working out at 500bhp/tonne at least, accelerating to 60mph in 2.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 170mph.

All of which is madness at a car with a production run of 25 p.a. and a starting cost of £60k - almost as OTT as the new Mercedes SLK with its controllable window tint. Sorry, we meant "Magic Sky Control". Seriously.

Expect more automative madness as it rolls out of the driveway over the weekend.

RIM BlackBerry Dakota leaked

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 07:31 AM PST

BlackBerry gives smartphone customers the best of both worlds.

It was a logical step for RIM to take, but underground rumblings of a BlackBerry Bold-style smartphone that combines a signature BlackBerry keyboard with a more modern touchscreen have now mainfested - in the form of the leaked BlackBerry Dakota.

According to Boy Genius Report, the screen is 2.8 inches across and capacitive (read: multi-touch). It runs BlackBerry OS 6.1 and packs 768MB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. Also included are the usual smartphone bells and whistles; an accelerometer, proximity sensor, 5MP camera, HD video recording et al. The device can also apparently be used as a 3G mobile hotspot.

No word on when an official announcement will come from RIM as yet, but at a glance this is starting to look to us like the most impressive BlackBerry yet.

Nintendo 3DS to get 3D video recording?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 07:01 AM PST

Nintendo to bring more cut-price 3D magic to the 3DS?

Everyone knows by now that the March-launching, £200-ish-costing Nintendo 3DS can take 3D photos using its dual cameras, but we'd heard nary a whisper of the possibility of shooting 3D video with the device.

But in a new interview on the Nintendo japanese site, designer Shigeru Miyamoto drops hints that Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata may be considering adding 3D video recording to the device via the onboard WiFi update system.

We'd love to see Nintendo's push to democratise 3D technology result in a 3D camcorder addition to the 3DS, but what, we have to ask, will this do to the already shaky battery life?

3D video recording on the 3DS: answered prayer or unnecessary frill? Let us know via e-mail or on the T3 Twitter feed.

Google Translate app updated with real time speech

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 06:29 AM PST

Potentially epochal app now available to download.

Take a quick look at the Android top ten on the T3 App Chart. Notice anything? Google Maps Navigation, Google Goggles, Google Maps 5, Google Translate all nestling there in the upper echelons of Android Market goodies.

Google is unquestionably setting the standard for Android developers, but this update to Google Translate goes way beyond that. The new Conversation mode in the popular language tool allows users to translate on the fly chatting into the phone and having it speak back in another language.

We just downloaded the app, and it works rather well indeed. Simply speak into the Voice Search microphone within the app "Two beers please". Google Translate then verifies what we've said in text format. Next A little tap on the speaker prompts "Dos cervesas por favor." in reply. Perfect.

Understanding our English was the only real problem, replacing our 'there' with 'than' every now and again, but that can easily be rectified using the Android keyboard, before you blurt about anything embarrassing to your waiter.

At the moment the app can only manage English to Spanish and Spanish to English but we're sure more languages to follow. If you're packing an Android 2.1 or above device then you can get the New Google Translate now.

A game changer if there ever was one. Nice work Google.

MySpace.com going under the hammer?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 06:09 AM PST

MySpace's parent company to put the former top dog social network up for sale?

Once-great social networking site MySpace is apparently to be sold off, according to its parent company News Corp Digital Media. A spokeswoman for the company confirmed that News Corp is "assessing a number of possibilities, including a sale, a merger and a spinout".

Earlier this week we reported that MySpace was laying off some 500 staff, or just under half of the company's total number of employees.

MySpace has been struggling since the popularity explosion of Facebook to stay relevant, and last October the site relaunched itself as a "social entertainment destination", with MySpace CEO Mike Jones stating boldly that the site was "not a social network anymore".

Since its redesign MySpace has reported that around 3.3 million new profiles have been created, putting the number of users of the site at roughly 70 million - still a whopping 430 million short of Facebook's global monopoly.

HP WebOS Tablet launch date set for February 9th?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 02:47 AM PST

Will we finally see WebOS put to its best use?

Following on from HP’s huge buyout of ailing mobile company Palm last year, many were left wondering what the company would do with its new found assets. One of the key reasons for the acquisition was that HP took a liking to WebOS, the slick touch-operated platform found in Palm’s Pre phones.

What with HP knowing a lot about computer devices and Palm knowing a lot about operating systems, the tech world has been waiting with baited breath for the release of an iPad-rivalling tablet that combines the best of both.

Now it seems that the wait isn’t too far off, as an invitation has surfaced for an HP Palm event in San Francisco on February 9th. The invite states that we’re in for “an exciting WebOS announcement,” so our money’s on the oft-rumoured and previously confirmed tablet finally dropping.

WebOS brings slick multitasking and intuitive gesture control, but would you be keen on an HP Palm tablet? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Apple iPad 2 to lose home button with iOS 4.3 updates?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 02:29 AM PST

iPad 2 goes even sleeker with no physical home button

With iOS 4.3 now in the hands of developers, the software’s iPad-bound multitouch adding credentials will see the physical home button removed from the upcoming iPad 2, new reports have suggested.

Apple’s insatiable desire to produce stunningly attractive, ultra sleek gadgets has seen its portable devices limit the use of physical controls as much as possible with latest reports suggesting that the four and five finger multitouch gesture controls soon to hit the iPad will spell the end of the current home button found on the company’s iDevices.

Reported by BGR the tech blog proclaimed: “We just got some pretty wild information from one of our Apple sources and while it’s hard to believe at first, it does make sense.” It added: “We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button.”

The new multitouch gesture controls to hit the iPad with the introduction of iOS 4.3 will allow users to make specified commands via the use of four and five finger swipe, pinch and flick motions.

Believed to already be testing home button-free iPhones and iPads at its Cupertino HQ, the imminent arrival of the iPad 2, rumoured to be unveiled on February 1st, is tipped as the first device to sport the new button-less design. A February 1st iPad 2 unveiling would coincide with the expected arrival of iOS 4.3.

What features would you like to see land on the upcoming iPad 2 arrival? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Alleged PS3 hackers face legal action from Sony

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 02:26 AM PST

Defiant hacker says he does not fear the rath of Sony

Gaming giant Sony has taken legal action against hackers who allegedly broke into the PS3’s software, giving users the ability to run any sort of program on their machines, including pirated games.

Over 100 hackers, part of the group fail0verflow, will face legal action for their involvement in what Sony claims to be copyright infringement and computer fraud.

George Hotz, a 21 year old hacker, also famous for hacking the Apple iPhone, has boldly said that he does not fear the might of Sony and the courts.

In a quote on the BBC news website, he said: “I have spoken with legal counsel and I feel comfortable that Sony's action against me doesn't have any basis”

The faile0verflow gang could come up against a restraining order, banning them from further hacking and denying the right to distribute the software produced from their hapless hacking.

The hack in question works by unlocking the signing code of the Sony PS3 which is used to prove if software or games are genuine. The code can then be used to 'sign' any other game or software as real, even though it may be a version you bought from that dodgy looking man at the market.

A judgement will be made by the courts, stateside. Stay tuned.

Apple iOS 4.3 beta hits devs with personal hotspots

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 02:11 AM PST

iPad to add new multitouch gesture controls

Following the news that the upcoming iOS 4.3 software release would transform user’s iPhones into personal hotspot creators, the beta edition of Apple’s next generation mobile operating system has touched down with developers.

Confirming that the iPhone will soon be able to convert it’s 3G reception into a personal wireless hotspot network enabling additional devices to get online, beta receiving developers have outlined a bevy of new features set to touch down with the imminent iOS update.

Not limited to the iPhone iOS 4.3 will find its way to the beloved tablets of iPad owners. Most exciting addition to the iPad’s bag of tricks will be the introduction of multitouch gesture controls that will enable a feast of new motion commands with four and five finger pinch, swipe and flick gestures all supported.

On a lighter note, the iPhone’s video camera is to receive a live on-screen effects overhaul with mock thermal imaging, Kaleidoscope, Light Tunnel and X-ray effects all added to spice up your handset-shot footage. Larger advertisements, AirPlay support for third-party apps and a redesigned FaceTime icon are also set to land in iOS version 4.3.

Although a precise release date has yet to be made public, widespread developer distribution would suggest iOS 4.3 will be made publicly available in a few short weeks, perhaps coinciding with the unveiling of the much mooted iPad 2.

What features would you like to see added to your iPhones and iPads via an iOS overhaul? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Windows Phone 7 has over 6,000 apps in Marketplace

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 12:54 AM PST

Phone 7 builds app catalogue at rapid rate

Following the announcement it is to legally challenge Apple’s patent of the term ‘app store’ Microsoft has revealed there are now more than 6,000 mobile applications available from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

Having celebrated the 5,000 app milestone just two weeks ago, Window’s Phone 7 adopters now have in excess of 6,000 apps available for download with an average of 116 apps being added to Microsoft’s marketplace every day.

With an average price of $2.34 (£1.50) per app, 71 per cent of the available applications are of the paid-for variety with Games the most developed category accounting for 23 per cent of all Phone 7 content. Tools are the second most numerous responsible for 14 per cent of available releases followed by Entertainment applications which make up 11 per cent of the offering. Currently almost 3,000 developers have produced downloadable content for the recently launch Microsoft mobile OS.

Microsoft yesterday filed legal action against Apple for a patent the fruity tech company holds restricting competitors from using the term ‘app store’ for their respective mobile application sales avenues. The filing read: "Apple cannot block competitors from using a generic name. 'App store' is generic and therefore in the public domain and free for all competitors to use."

Sony Ericsson declares 2011 intent following poor year

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 12:18 AM PST

Phone manufacturer sets sights on 2011 improvement

Sony Ericsson has acknowledged what was a disappointing product haul in 2010 as the handset specialist looks ahead to a promising year in 2011.

Speaking with the folks at PocketLint, Sony Ericsson’s acting Global Head of Marketing Steve Walker has openly discussed the company’s failings in the past 12 months stating: “Last year we didn’t anticipate the strength of feeling that consumers would have towards the Android release,” adding: “that was a learning experience of the first year of mass market Android smartphones”.

Embellishing on the influence Google’s mobile OS had on the smartphone market in 2010 Walker said: “When we started to design our 2010 handsets in 2008, nobody really knew the dynamics of the Android smartphone market or even what the smartphone market was going to be.”

“None of us could predict 2 years previously, to what extent users would switch into smartphones. None of us could really predict what would be more important and less important for consumers”.

Walker, who claims the company learnt “a huge amount last year”, followed the CES 2011 arrival of the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc by declaring: “As we do every year, we’ve taken those learnings and applied them to the new products in the new portfolio. We do think we’ve taken a big step forward for 2011”. The Xperia Arc, set to launch in the coming months runs Google’s latest Android 2.3 operating system, Gingerbread and features and 4.3-inch touchscreen, 8.1-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities and a 1GHz Qualcomm processor.

Expected to play a key role in Sony Ericsson’s 2011 portfolio is the long awaited and heavily anticipated Sony Ericsson PSP Phone believed to preparing for a Mobile World Congress unveiling next month.

Bad news for Myspace as it has announced today that it is to axe nearly half of its workforce. The cuts will see 500 people face the chop. This is due to the ever increasing popularity of Facebook. Myspace has tried to rebrand itself recently, to what it calls "a social entertainment destination" let's hope, for the sake of the other 500 or so people working there, that it works. However, social networking gods, Facebook have been touted to release their first ever phone, named the INQ Cloud touch. The phone will be powered by Android and the homescreen will have multiple entry points to Facebook functions. Keep an eye out for the Facebook TV and laptop in the near future, it could happen...

This year's Mobile World Congress, taking place in February, is set to be when Nokia unveil their much anticipated N9. With a release date set for April 2011, the N8 follow-up looks like a MacBook Air shrunken in the washing machine. The phone will run on Nokia and Intel's MeeGoo platform and also boast a 12-megapixel camera and QWERTY keyboard, it's safe to say we're excited by this phone, providing it doesn't follow in the N8's slow moving footsteps. Apple still managed to get someattention today, despite dissapointed us yesterday with the new Verizon iPhone 4 lacking 4G. Latest on the iPhone rumour mill is new the Apple blower is set to add Wi-Fi sharing capabiltiy through the upcoming iOS 4.3 update. In other iPhone news, the iPhone 5 is expected to include solar power to keep it going, we'll see how that works over in cloudy Blighty

Sony's talked about follow up to the PSP, the PSP2 is set to launch on January 27th according to sources from gaming specialist MCV. The release of the PSP2 will be interesting to see, as it will now go up against the Nintendo 3DS, officialy set to launch in February in Japan with a global launch in March. As prices are still unknown for the PSP2, it's tense times to see how well they will both fare. The rival to the PSP2, the Nintendo 3DS came under the knife today, as one was stolen and dismantled in Taiwan. Pictures posted on the internet reaveal the inner self of the 3D gaming device. Finally, Nintendo has announced this afternoon the UK launch date and price for the 3DS, in case you were wondering it should be with us March 25th for around £230.

Nintendo 3DS UK release date and price revealed

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:33 AM PST

3DS to hit UK one month after Japan launch

The eagerly anticipated UK arrival of the Nintendo 3DS is set to happen on March 25th with the glasses-free portable 3D games console to set wannabe owners back somewhere in the region of £200 - £230, gaming publication MCV has announced.

In an online news alert the industry magazine revealed: "MCV has been lead to believe that the console will arrive in the UK on or around March 25th with a shelf price of £200-£230."

The apparent UK release details come just days ahead of the official European 3DS press event Nintendo is scheduled to host in Amsterdam on January 19th and follows the news the Japanese company hopes to sell 4 million 3DS units globally by the end of March.

Set to sport a 3.5-inch sans-glasses 3D capable display, the soon to arrive 3DS has come under repeated attack in recent weeks following Nintendo’s advice that under six year olds sound not use the device for health reasons and the revelation that the console’s battery will allow for just 3-5 hours of gaming per charge.

T-Mobile changes its mind over mobile data allowance

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:15 AM PST

Network reviews its data decision with haste

T-Mobile UK has officially announced that plans to reduce mobile data allowances for all customers has now changed, and that it will only affect new customers that join the network from February 1st 2011.

Just two days on from the announcement that data usage would be limited to 500MB from the usual 3GB, Lysa Hardy, Vice President of T-Mobile UK released this statement:

“On Monday 10 January 2011 we announced that, in line with the rest of the industry, T-Mobile would be reducing its Fair Use Policy for data usage to 500MB a month for all mobile phone customers. Following a further review of our policy, these changes will now be introduced from 1 February, to new and upgrading customers only - not existing customers.

There will be no change to the data packages for existing customers for the duration of their contract and we apologise for any confusion caused. The revision to the Fair Use Policy is designed to ensure an improved quality of service for all mobile internet users."

So what does that mean for those of you who decide to join T-Mobile from February 1st and want internet access? Well along with the 500MB data allowance, charges will not be made if you exceed the limit. If you are thinking of catching up on Eastenders or downloading videos, both streaming and downloading will be restricted.

If you want to up your allowance to 1GB a month you'll have to buy yourself a Mobile Broadband booster.

Happy with T-Mobile's decision to do a u-turn on mobile data allowances? Lets us know your thoughts via Facebook and Twitter.

Keen to build on its green credentials Apple has filed a patent for a new form of solar-powered charging system that it hopes will be adopted by iPhones, iPads and MacBooks in the near future.

Although a number of solar-influenced battery-enhancing handsets are already doing the rounds, Apple’s ability to lead trends could see a fleet of solar-powered devices released if the upcoming iPhone 5 or future Apple handset were to be released with the company’s newly patented charging system.

The patent, which details ways of recharging the rechargeable batteries found in portable phones, laptops and tablets, features a new power control circuit situated between the sun sapping solar cell and the device’s battery that ensures a steady release of the absorbed power.

With the battery on Apple’s market leading iPhone devices constantly under criticism, many users would no doubt value the inclusion of a mother-nature inspired power boost. The patent, which Apple has yet to comment on, comes after it was revealed the upcoming redesign of the company’s Cupertino-based headquaters would be carbon neutral through the sole use of environmentally friendly, renewable and recycled materials.

Microsoft challenges Apple over App Store trademark

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 06:37 AM PST

"Nu-uh, it's short for Apple," says Cupertino.

Microsoft has had enough of Apple's bogarting of the term 'App Store' and has issued a legal challenge to assert that it should not be covered by a trademark.

Presumably tired of calling its application portal the Windows Phone 7 App Marketplace, Microsoft reckons it's well within its rights to pinch App Store from Apple without fear of legal reprisals.

The Big M's lawyers say in the filing: "Any secondary meaning or fame Apple has in 'App Store' is de facto secondary meaning that cannot convert the generic term ‘app store’ into a protectable trademark.

"Apple cannot block competitors from using a generic name. 'App store' is generic and therefore in the public domain and free for all competitors to use."

Not so, say Apple. They reckon that the term App Store derives from Apple, and that their trademark is protected. This will be an interesting one. We'll have more on this when the situation develops.

Sony PSP2 launch set for January 27th?

PSP2 to challenge 3DS and PSP Phone

Long awaited follow-up to Sony’s handheld gaming great, the PSP2 is set to be officially unveiled on January 27th, new reports have claimed.

Gaming specialist MCV has claimed that sources close to the matter have revealed the next generation pocket-friendly console will land later this month during a Tokyo-based press conference. No official word of any such announcement has yet been revealed by Sony.

The predicted PSP2 arrival would spark a fierce competition in the portable gaming market with the Nintendo 3DS officially scheduled for a Japanese launch on February 26th ahead of a March global rollout and the heavily rumoured and repeatedly leaked Sony Ericsson PSP Phone expected to touch down at Mobile World Congress next month.

Despite having lived in the shadow of Nintendo’s pocket gamers for much of its life, the PSP’s increased graphical realism helped it outsell all other console in Japan last December. Specs, and pricing for the PSP2 are currently unknown.

Is there room for the PSP2 and a PSP Phone in the market? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Steve Jobs takes $1 annual salary from Apple

Stock options boost Jobs' $1 annual salary

Apple’s formidable founder and CEO Steve Jobs has continued to take a measly $1 annual salary from the Cupertino-based tech giant, a new SEC filing has revealed.

Jobs, who has taken a $1 annual payoff from Apple for each of the past ten years, receives hefty stock-based compensation for his work fronting the company that in the past year launched the iPhone 4, latest MacBook Air and the market dominating iPad tablet.

Having formerly owned as many as 15 million Apple shares the recent SEC filing shows that the turtleneck-wearing gadget overlord current holds around 5.5 million shares of Apple stock, valued in the region of $1.8 billion (£1.15 billion). Reported to have not sold a single Apple share since rejoining the company in 1997 the SEC filing stated Jobs’”level of stock ownership significantly aligns his interests with shareholders’ interests.”

Asides from his hefty Apple ownership stakes, Jobs’, who is the largest shareholder of Disney, is kept afloat by his 138 million shares in the animation company garnered during Pixar’s sales to the cartoon-creating great. His $5.4 billion (£3.46 billion) stake in Disney earned Jobs $55 million (£35 million) in dividends last year alone. That’s a whole lot of shiny iDevices.

Does Steve Jobs' hefty stock interest in Apple push him to create consumer-appealing tech? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
