Tech Week: 3DS launch date confirmed and iPad 2 leaks

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 10:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week
The week's top story is without a doubt the formal unveiling of the Nintendo 3DS with the pocket-friendly, glasses-free 3D gaming device set to hit UK stores on March 25th. Whilst we all got excited by the news of its imminent arrival, that excitement was short lived as high-end pricing soon followed. Following the unveiling and the T3 hands-on with the device Nintendo has defended the £230 price tag inflicted on the 3DS whilst UK retailers look set to capitalise on the console with a £50 per unit profit to be made. Elsewhere on the 3DS front Nintendo has quashed rumours it fears the upcoming PSP2 announcement declaring it doesn't watch competitors and offers a unique experience with the 3DS.

Apple’s second generation tablet is on the horizon with rumours rife about what features will and won’t make the final cut. Now pegged with a February 9th unveiling following the leak of launch screens, iOS 4.3 hidden icons have all but confirmed the inclusion of front and rear facing cameras whilst a leaked case shows the inclusion of an SD card slot. On the out however is the expected Retina display which has been positively culled. Also a disappointing omission from the iPad 2 unveiling will be Steve Jobs who is to miss the event having been forced to take a medically induced leave of absence.

Mobile World Congress 2011 is now just a few short weeks away and the bevy of gadgets set to launch in Barcelona is already a tantalising trawl of the year’s must-have devices. Potential star of the show the long awaited Sony Ericsson PSP Phone has reportedly been spotted in China whilst competitor Samsung has announced it is to showcase its first dual-core smartphones during MWC. Phone giant HTC is expected to have a strong MWC showing having announced it will launch the HTC Gratia and HTC 7 Pro in February it is also rumoured to launch its first tablet, the HTC Flyer, during the show. Away from MWC Apple is believed to finally be preparing the white iPhone 4 for release on February 27th following a number of leaks.

Apple App Store crosses the 10 billion mark

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 06:21 AM PST

It's a matter of celebration for Apple

The Apple App Store has crossed the 10 billion app mark today (Saturday, 22 January 2011).

After launching a countdown for the 10 billionth app and offering a $10,000 (£6252) iTunes gift card to the person downloading the 10 billionth app, it's finally gotten there.

There is no word yet on who the lucky user is, and what app was downloaded that helped Apple cross this milestone.

The Apple App Store opened in 2008 and is an indicator of the success it has seen since.

Add to the number of apps being downloaded from the App Store and buy T3's February 2011 iPad edition. Let us know what apps you already have via our Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for more tech news.

App week: Playboy uncensored, Angry Birds shot down

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

Angry Birds toppled by 14-year old's creation
It feels a little bit like the fall of the Berlin wall, or when I Will Always Love You was knocked off the top of the charts by 2 Unlimited. Angry Birds is no longer atop of the free downloads pile on Apple's App Store. It has been replaced by Bubble Ball, a super-simple physics game built by a 14-year-old American schoolboy.

Playboy in the flesh on the iPad
An interesting development in the weird and wonderful world of Apple censorship this week; Hugh Hefner reckons an uncensored version of his digital magazine app will be hitting the App Store in March. Does this mean that Apple is lightening its stance against porn or just allowing nudey Playboy bunnies because of the esteem of the publication?

Tag, you're it!
Fitness apps often provide that little bit of extra motivation needed to keep going, whether it be a lady barking orders at you, or just serving up a power song just at the right time. Nike has taken the ultimate approach. Putting one over on your mates. The new Nike+ GPS app now allows you to 'Play Tag' with friends, even on solo runs. Check out how it works...

App Store pushes 10bn downloads
It's probably apt (or app-t...) that it has been a very Apple heavy week for app news, with the company on the verge of announcing its 10 billionth download from the store - reaching the mark way quicker than the iTunes Music Store did. To commemorate the event Apple release the list of the all most downloaded apps. You'll never guess which was number one... actually you probably will.

APP REVIEWS FROM THE T3 APP CHART:

Android's five-star news reader
No, we're not talking about one of the Sky Sports News beauties, unfortunately. Pulse news has been a massive hit on iOS devices and now it's brought the magic to Android with a fine looking and wonderfully functional reader to pull in all of your favourite RSS feeds. It's free too. Download it.

There's more to life than YouTube...
... you've got Daily Motion, Google Video, Bing video and a host of other portals serving up vids of cats doing funny things. RealTube for Windows Phone 7 handsets pulls the whole crew together to bring you the full range of web video. Most of which you can probably find on YouTube...

Google Places for iPhone
Don't want all of the bells and whistles of Foursquare's mayors and badges? No, neither do we. So Google Places is an awesome local search-based alternative. With Google Maps based at it's heart and a number of pre-set search categories you're good to go to find whatever it is you're looking for.

Mozilla blocks Skype Toolbar for Firefox

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 02:31 AM PST

Skype Toolbar has been soft blocked by Mozilla

Mozilla has blocked the Skype toolbar in their browser, Firefox, claiming it's the cause of almost 40,000 browser crashes in one week.

The Skype Toolbar extension for Firefox allows users to make calls - audio as well as video - while within the browser. The extension is installed into Firefox by default when Skype is installed or updated.

Mozilla has claimed that the current version of the Skype extension has caused almost 40,000 crashes of Firefox 3.6.13 last week. In addition, depending on the version of Skype Toolbar being used, it makes DOM manipulation (a method to process elements of a website) up to 300 times slower. This essentially means the website will load slower than it actually could.

To prevent this, Mozilla has implemented a "soft block" on all versions of the extension, which means Firefox users will be notified of the block, but can choose to enable it again if they decide they want it.

Skype made an official statement to TechCrunch, which asks users to download the latest version of the extension as it would fix any issues. They also added they are working with Mozilla to ensure no more problems occur and apologized for any inconvenience caused.

Let T3 know if you have faced any problems with the Skype Toolbar in Firefox via our Twitter and Facebook feeds and follow us for regular tech news.

Hackers attack Lush website; credit cards at risk

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 02:00 AM PST

Hackers target Lush website and compromise credit card details.

Customters of the online Lush shop should ensure that their credit cards have not been compromised as the website has fallen foul of hackers.

Orders placed on the website between 4 October 2010 and 20 January 2011 are those which may have been targeted. If customers have ordered in the store or via phone, then they need not worry. The company has said that customers who were potential victims of the cybercrime were sent an email on 20 January 2011.

The website is still under attack.

Lush said, "24 hour security monitoring has shown us that we are still being targeted and there are continuing attempts to re-enter. We refuse to put our customers at risk of another entry - so have decided to completely retire this version of our website."

They have advised customers to contact their banks to ensure their card details have not been hacked.

The company plans to launch a completely new and temporary website in the next few days, which will only cater to PayPal payments.

Lush also showed their sense of humour and sarcasm by addressing a message to the hacker - by offering him/her a job. The website says, "If you are reading this, our web team would like to say that your talents are formidable.  We would like to offer you a job - were it not for the fact that your morals are clearly not compatible with ours or our customers'."

Guess that's one place the hacker can't apply for a job anymore.

Were you one of the online Lush customers between October and January? Let us know if you had to face any suspicious activity on your credit card by posting on our Twitter and Facebook feeds. Stay tuned in for your dose of tech news.
