Apple iPad 2 to feature 1.2GHz dual-core processor

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 08:58 AM PST

Apple iPad 2 to be unveiled February 9th?

With the expected unveiling of the heavily rumoured iPad 2 now just days away, the second-generation Apple tablet is to launch featuring a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, new reports have suggested.

The latest seemingly insider speculation comes from an analyst at Concord Securities who claims to be privy to the eagerly awaited final specifications for the iPad 2 as well as the expected date of announcement with the mooted device reportedly to be officially unveiled next Wednesday, February 9th.

Still unconfirmed by Apple, the analyst claims that although the iPad will not feature a HD resolution display it will become the first tablet device to sport a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM across the full range of models.

If true this hefty processing punch would see the iPad 2 topple the recently announced Android 3.0 launching Motorola Xoom tablet but would no doubt have a negative affect on the portable gadgets currently impressive battery life.

Have you held off buying a first generation iPad in anticipation of its second-generation counterpart? Let us know your pre-emptive thoughts on the iPad 2 via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony PSP2 better than the Nintendo 3DS, say T3 readers

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 08:44 AM PST

Will Sony's NGP handheld really reign supreme?

We like a good scrap at T3. Hot competition between rivals normally ends up being beneficial to the consumer, so we’re all in favour of tech companies going head to head. This rivalry can bring out the worst in fans though, with tech advocates lighting up message boards about the merits of their favourite devices.

That’s why we like to give you a safe forum in which to air your views. Each week we ask you to vote in our topical tech polls, and last week was all about the upcoming battle between the Sony PSP2 and the Nintendo 3DS.

So which came out on top? Truth be told, it was an impossible close race. Probably the closest we’ve had in such matters. At the time of writing, the PSP2 had edged ahead by just 3.1 per cent, taking 51.55 per cent of the votes. The 3DS found favour with the remaining 48.45 per cent of you.

This obviously means that Sony’s powerhouse pocket console has won this particular race, although since the vote was so close, it’s anything but conclusive. In Truth Sony will have its work cut out clawing back custom, since the 3DS will go on sale some eight months earlier.

Got a strong view on either of the new breed of handheld consoles? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed. Also, don't forget to check out this week's poll.

Samsung Wave II launches in the UK running Bada 1.2

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 08:16 AM PST

Bada given new Wave of life

With so much focus and speculation surrounding the imminent Samsung Galaxy S 2 arrival, the official launch of the Samsung Wave II has gone relatively unnoticed today, much like the Bada OS the new device runs.

Following on from the original Wave handset that launched the Bada OS last year the Wave II, also known as the Samsung GT-S8530, has gone on sale in the UK today featuring a 3.7-inch ‘Super Clear’ LCD display, 1GHz Humming Bird processor and a 5-megapixel camera with 30fps 720p HD video recording capabilities.

Whilst the launch of Samsung’s bespoke Bada mobile operating system was overshadowed by the success of the company’s Android powered Galaxy S device last year, Sammy has vowed to stick by the relatively unknown OS with the Wave II landing alongside the latest edition of the operating system, Bada version 1.2.

Adding a front-facing camera and the company’s TouchWiz UI, the Wave II will feature the usual array of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity options wrapped inside a sleekly designed body that measures in at a mere 11.8mm thick.

Available through O2 and Phones4u, Samsung hopes to tempt consumers into the Wave II and the Bada OS through a ‘free entertainment package’ that I”ncludes five of the most recognisable and highest ranking apps in the paid for charts from Gameloft and EA Games, which are available from Samsung Apps.”

Speaking on the UK launch of the Wave II Samsung UK and Ireland’s Managing Director, Simon Stanford announced: “Following the phenomenal success of our first high-end Wave handset last year, we wanted to take the smartphone experience we offer our customers a step further.”

Do you think Samsung will continue to produce nominal handsets for its Bada OS or simply let the operating system dwindle into a distant memory? Let us know your views on Bada and the Wave II via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Tiger Lab app demos Nintendo DS emulator for Android

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 07:12 AM PST

We've all seen the NES and SNES emulators. Is it time to upgrade?

One of the main reasons why the Android Market lags so far behind the App Store is the lack of top quality, marquee title games on offer for the platform, but could all that be about to change.

Last week came news that Sony is developing a PlayStation Suite to bring PSP games to Google phone owners, and today it was revealed that Tiger Lab has developed a prototype Nintendo DS emulator with the idea of bringing Mario and friends along to the party.

The prototype, which is in the very early stages of development that has been placed out there as a proof-of-concept to show that the possibility of playing DS games on the platform can actually work. It does, albeit incredibly slowly.

If you fancy giving it a try Tiger Lab is a free download from the Android Market, and all you need to do is dump your downloaded ROMs here in this folder on your handset: /sdcard/roms/nds. According to PocketNow.com Zipped nds ROMs aren't supported, and the files must end in .nds. Be warned though, it is very, very slow.

So there you have it. Would more high profile games convince you to make the jump from Apple to Android? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Carphone Warehouse unveil The Appys app awards

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 06:47 AM PST

iPhone and Android to do battle on the app front

With the Oscars currently dominating much of the tinsletown talk, The Carphone Warehouse has announced the UK’s first major awards and celebration of all things Apps in the form of the Carphone Warehouse Appys.

The Appys, which will kick of in February with Carphone Warehouse employees tasked with submitting their favourite smartphone fillers, will then see a panel of industry experts whittle the ten categories down to a shortlist of five apps per category. Eventual winners will then be voted on by the British public before a spring final ceremony.

“Demand for Apps has exploded over recent months, and has really transformed the way we use technology,” said Matt Stringer, Managing Director of The Carphone Warehouse. “Apps have become a part of our day-to-day lives and we are very excited to be able to celebrate not only the best Apps, but also the extremely talented and creative people who have brought them to us. We are all very much looking forward to the inaugural Carphone Warehouse Appys and putting on a great awards show.”

Speaking on the upcoming first Appys, awards judge and T3 Editor Luke Peters announced: “Apps, both on smartphones and now tablets, are one of tech's biggest success stories. Capturing the imagination of both users and developers alike, we have seen the category explode and I'm thrilled that T3 is part of this recognised industry event that will aim to reward the most innovative and best apps around.”

Samsung Galaxy S 2 release date teased in official video

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 06:18 AM PST

Samsung to unveil Galaxy S 2 handset at MWC 2011

Already confirmed for an official unveiling during the company’s MWC 2011 opening conference on Sunday February 13th, Samsung has teased the upcoming Galaxy S 2 handset in an official video preview.

Announcing “There are over ten million secrets in the world” in reference to the number of Galaxy S handsets Sammy has shifted since launch last July, the video teaser goes on to offer tantalisingly little on the upcoming follow-up.

Other than a brief insight into the device’s outline at the end of the video, one that hints towards a stunningly slim form factor, little else is revealed on the upcoming handset in the teaser video asides from the fact that unsurprisingly it can seemingly play music and take photos.

Recent leaks have outed the fact that, not only will the Samsung Galaxy S 2 handset be officially unveiled a week on Sunday, sometime between 18:30 and 19:04 GMT to be precise, but the device will land sporting a dual-core processor and Super AMOLED Plus display.

T3.com will be on hand live from the Samsung MWC conference in Barcelona on Sunday February 13th to bring you all the latest on the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S 2. For all the latest direct from MWC 2011 sign up to follow the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Grand Theft Auto 'almost canned' says developer

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 04:39 AM PST

How a game of cops and robbers turned into a gaming giant

The original top-down version of Grand Theft Auto almost didn't make it onto the shelves according to a developer who worked on the first GTA instalment.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Gary Penn a developer at DMA Design, the company responsible for bringing the game to life in 1997, claimed it was "a real mess for years."

Penn added, "It never moved on, it never went anywhere. It never really felt like it was going anywhere. It was almost canned. The publisher, BMG Interactive, wanted to can it, as it didn't seem to be going anywhere."

As well as persistent crashing, and problems with car handling, Penn explained that the police behaved really badly, and the way that they originally worked was, "just rubbish."

it was only until a bug that made the police become mental and aggressive that devs began to lay the foundations for the sandbox carnage we know and love today, "It was less about the mission stuff, which we always thought was another mess, and more about just general play -- just being able to piss around."

Cue running over 2D Hare Krishnas, roaring toy-car looking sports cars through Liberty City unloading ammunition at druglords and more than 10 years later, it's now one of the biggest game franchises on the planet. Imagine a world without Grand Theft Auto...

Nintendo 3DS pictures and hands-on opinion

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 04:12 AM PST

Extra dimensional gaming given the hands-on treatment

Having been pegged with a March 21st UK launch date recently the Nintendo 3DS, the world’s first glasses-free portable 3D games console, has stopped by T3 Towers for an exclusive hands-on to mixed opinion.

Removing our customary 3D specs we took the 3DS in hand to sample Super Street Fighter IV and Nintnedo’s augmented reality Space Raiders, comparing the upcoming extra-dimensional device with its standard two dimensional predecessors. Here is what the T3 team thought:

- Click here to see Nintendo 3DS pictures: hands-on images

Adam Bunker – T3 Staff Writer
"I was impressed, as it goes. That was the first time I’ve seen the 3DS in person, and for me it had needed to do something rather special to grab my interest after the PSP2 announcement last week. Thankfully, the 3D on Ninty’s new handheld is actually very good - far from just a gimmick – and if the developers really get their teeth into the tech it’ll be incredible. Others here at T3 complained of eye troubles, but I thought it was fine and wouldn’t present a problem so long as you don’t play for hours on end.”

Joe Svetlik – T3 News Editor
“Initially off-putting, the 3D really adds to Super Streetfighter IV. It takes about a minute or so for your eyes to get used to it, so my advice would be to start with the 3D on medium before ramping it up. Space Raiders is a lot of fun too - shooting your friends' fizzogs with a real world background, what's not to like?”

Luke Johnson – T3 News Reporter
“Taking a minute or two to adjust to the glasses-free 3D content the 3DS quickly won me over with impressive levels of depth to its gameplay. Not heeding the on-screen prompts to take a ten minute break per 30 minutes of gaming after about 45 minutes my eyes felt strained and having stopped playing took some time to return to full focus. Due to this my initial positive thoughts were quickly hampered and repeated 3DS gaming now holds little more than a gimmick factor in my blurry eyes.”

Matt Hill - T3 Deputy Editor
"The 3DS is a nifty little thing, light and disarmingly toy-like as all good Nintendo products are (though the green hue is a bit too Early Learning Centre, I’ll be sure to make mine a ‘Cosmos Black’ one), yet chock full of high-end kit. An initial dabble with Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition (try saying that after a heavy night) proves fun, the frame-rate impressive and the layered 3D effective. Initial concerns focus on how long you’ll be able to play with it before your eyes go – mine began to blur and play tricks on me after just five minutes – and your eyes have to be straight-on with the screen otherwise the effect doesn’t work and it all goes a bit ‘watching Avatar without the glasses on’. But I’m impressed enough to want a rather longer hands-on."

Playstation Move PC compatibility coming soon?

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 03:55 AM PST

PC drivers for the gaming wand is on the cards

Rumours flying round the web today suggest that Sony is soon to unveil a compatibility deal that’ll bring the motion-sensing Playstation Move controller to the PC. Sony is expected to take the stage at GDC 2011 (which takes place from Feb 28th to March 4th), and unveil the Move Server, a set of drivers that will allow the Move controllers to work with your PC.

"This talk will bring developers up to speed on developing for the PlayStation Move controller,” says Sony. “We will cover developing for the new PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter accessory."

The statement continues: "We will discuss the new Move Server project that will make it possible for academics and hobbyists to develop software using the PlayStation Move controller on their own PCs."

While that seems to point to a setup where the Move controllers can merely be tinkered with by people in sheds, it may open the door for professional developers and publishers to begin producing PC games with the Move controllers in mind. …So long as Sony allows it, of course. Would you be up for playing Move games on your desktop? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Sony Reader iPhone app rejected by Apple

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Apple looks to change App Store rules regarding eBooks.

The Sony Reader iOS app has been rejected by Apple, with Cupertino claiming that it breaches rules on selling content within apps. Apple says any content sold within apps needs to go through them, using the in-app purchase mechanism.

The Sony Reader app, like its Amazon Kindle rival, directs punters to an external web pages to buy eBooks, something Apple now seems none too keen on. The rejection of the Big S’s e-reader add-on could mean Apple is looking to throw Amazon out too for breaching the same rules.

Experts also believe this is tied to Apple’s imminent announcement of a new subscription tool as part of its tie-up with News International for The Daily newspaper. The new tool will give Apple better control over who buys content on iPhones and iPads, hence it wants Sony, and potentially Amazon, to toe the line.

Sony remains confident it can sort something out with Apple. But this looks like it could be the start of another iOS controversy.

LG Optimus 3D release date officially set for MWC 2011

LG to follow Optimus 2X with Optimus 3D

Having unveiled the world’s first dual-core handset at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas recently LG has officially announced it is to out another world’s first at the upcoming Mobile World Congress as it prepares the arrival of the first 3D smartphone.

Dubbed the LG Optimus 3D the mooted extra-dimensional handset has repeatedly been rumoured and even snapped in the recent weeks with the first official word from LG on the device now proclaiming: "At this year's Mobile World Congress, LG will unveil the LG Optimus 3D, the world's first 3D smartphone offering consumers a full 3D experience right in the palm of their hands."

As well as featuring the much expected glasses-free 3D display, LG has confirmed the upcoming device, yet to be priced or dated for UK arrival, will tout a dual-lens snapper allowing for 3D photographs and content to be generated direct from the handset.

Discussing the imminent device arrival, pegged for the opening of Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona on February 14th, LG announced: "The LG Optimus 3D addresses the lack of 3D content issue -- one of the biggest problems facing the 3D market -- with a complete platform for a one-of-a-kind experience on a mobile device."

"LG's most advanced smartphone to date will feature a dual-lens camera for 3D recording, a glasses-free LCD panel for 3D viewing and diverse connectivity options such as HDMI and DLNA for 3D content sharing anytime, anywhere."

Samsung under fire over Galaxy Tab sales

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 02:01 AM PST

Recently released figures questioned as Samsung says actual sales are "quite small".

Samsung has been quick to tell the world about the success of the Galaxy Tab, with figures out last week claiming it had flogged two million units of the iPad rival since its launch at the start of November.

However, it turns out that number isn’t quite what it seems. While Samsung has shipped two million Galaxy Tabs to distributors, it hasn’t actually sold that same figure to gadget lovers around the globe, something that was certainly insinuated in last week’s triumphant announcement.

In fact, Samsung’s Lee Young-hee said that the number of units actually sold from retailers to regular customers was, “…quite small.” She even claimed that, “…sell out wasn’t as fast expected.” She refused to reveal an exact figure.

So it looks like Samsung’s been bigging up its slate without revealing the full story. The question is, has the Galaxy Tab really been rivalling the iPad? Or is it all just hype concocted in Korea? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Sony Party-Shot DS2 outed

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 01:13 AM PST

New-look Party-shot means no more shaky, boozed-up snaps on Facebook.

Sony’s Party-shot was a hit first time round, capable of taking snaps of you and your pals as you get on the tins without going all blurry and accidentally taking shots of the floor instead of everyone’s faces.

And now the smart camera gadget is back. The new Party-shot DS2 rocks a similar design to the original, but now comes with touch sensitive activation for ‘on demand’ images, as well as sweep panorama support (as long as the Sony camera you’ve docked has that feature too).

Other than these new additions, everything is as you were. Simply dock the camera and it’ll wheel around taking pics while you get trollied or just kick back on the sofa. You also get a protective case and tripod included.

Sony Cyber-shot W520 revealed

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 11:51 PM PST

You’ll find a 2.7-inch LCD round the back, while inside it rocks Sony’s ace sweep panorama function and comes with intelligent auto so your pics look great even if you’re not into tinkering around with the settings.

The WB520 is due out in March, with Sony remaining coy about pricing. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more details as we get them.

New Sony Cyber-shot HX series snappers unveiled

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 11:37 PM PST

Full HD video and 'DSLR-like shooting options' for new compacts.

Sony’s never one to shy away from bigging up its own Cyber-shot line-up and today’s new pair of HX series efforts are no different. The Big S claims that both pack in ‘DSLR-like’ skills which will make your snaps look like they’ve been taken by a pro.

There’s no denying that the specs for the top-end HX100V and its baby bro, the HX9V, are impressive. Both pack in one-touch Full HD video recording, 16.2 megapixels, GPS for geotagging, 3D sweep panorama, 3D stills and an extra bright 3-inch LCD.

Each camera includes Optical Steadyshot which has been brought over from Sony’s Handycam camcorder range. This means you should be able to snaffle blur-free images even when zoomed in as tight as possible.

And zoom is what the HX100V is all about, with a mind-boggling 30x Carl Zeiss number which includes a special coating to eliminate flare on your pics. The HX9V drops its optical zoom to 16x, with 24mm wide angle smarts.

Both models also tout background defocus, taking two snaps in quick succession and combining the results. Throw in Intelligent Sweep Panorama for taking extreme wide angle shots by simply moving the camera from side-to-side, and you’ve got the complete package.

Both cameras are due in April, with prices currently MIA. For more on this story and the latest gadget news and gossip, hit up our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
