Posted: 23 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com

iPad 2 release date confirmation finally arrived today in the shape of an official invite which popped in the T3 inbox earlier today. It had initially been suggested that the iPad would be delayed until June or would match the release date of the BlackBerry Playbook, but it appears we can put that down to some bad rumour-mongering. You can find out when we will get to see the new iPad and where the event will take place here.

Apple is also in the headlines with talk that iTunes is set to get high quality downloads, while speculation suggests that OS X Lion could receive a major overhaul.

Android app tells you when Facebook pals unfriend you

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:55 AM PST

Receive notification: Seek vengeance.

A new Android app will monitor your Facebook account and inform you when some no good Judas goes on a friend-cull and deletes your from their social network circle.

Unfriend Watch will let you know who exactly thinks they're above having you on their Facebook friends list and send you a notification when they cut you lose. The notification will feature the person's name and profile picture and let you look at their profile.

App creator, Alex Guberman, of Cupertino-based Digi-Q says: "It’s kind of a ‘dis’ nowadays to unfriend someone. So, naturally most people want to know when that happens to them. When you download our app you will be able to find out when you lose a friend on Facebook right away."

The app could lead to many hurt feelings, so if you're the type who would get upset by that friend of your ex deleting you then best steer clear. However if you want to carry out acts of vengeance against the so-called friend who cut you lose, it's perfect for spotting their social network-based treachery.

Alternatively for those who don't need the self-worth-boost you could experiment with how many friends you lose each time you post politically charged status updates.

This is the second stalker-ish Facebook app to launch in the last couple of days. The web-based Facebook Breakup Notifier will tell you when one of your spoken-for female friends is single again so you can swoop in.

Google to increase YouTube's live sports streaming

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:42 AM PST

Google in talks over live YouTube sports streaming

Having previously trialled streaming live cricket from the Indian Premier League, video sharing site YouTube is reportedly targeting all major sports franchises in a push to pioneer online sports streaming.

Targeting universally appreciated sporting events, YouTube’s behemoth of an owner Google is reported to be in talks with the world’s most popular sporting federations over the future of live online broadcasting.

Currently believed to be in negotiations with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) in the US, Google plans to stream fixtures live across the globe via YouTube with the increased user activity and time spent on the site plumping the company’s ability to make money from premium advertising revenues.

Announcing YouTube’s increased sport streaming plans that will cover “most pro sports leagues” including Europe’s leading football championships, Gautam Anand, Google’s Director of Content Partnerships for Asia revealed the company was currently in talks with leading sports authorities.

He said: "It's fair to say that there will be a lot more appealing sports content you'll see on YouTube. We have ongoing conversations with pretty much everyone."

What sporting events would you most like to see land on YouTube’s free-to-watch live streaming service? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPad 2 release date to match iPhone 5 arrival

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:15 AM PST

iPad 2 and iPhone 5 to in June?

With rumours running rife around when Apple will launch the iPad 2 and iPhone 5, new reports out of Taiwan have suggested the Cupertino-based company will make the two products available on the same day.

Whilst we must stress that these rumours should be taken with a hefty pinch of salt, it would suggest the second-generation Apple tablet would not touch down until June or July, the expected arrival of the iPhone 5 despite recent rumours suggesting the mooted handset has been delayed until September.

Whilst Apple is renowned for rigidly sticking to its annual product cycles, the unverified reports claim the two devices will launch alongside each other in a bumper summer offering from the tech giant. Whilst we can’t see this happening with Apple wanting to fully capitalise on two high-end release periods, with the now overdue second-gen yet to been given a confirmed arrival time it cannot be ruled out.

Previously the launch of the Apple iPad 2 has been reported to coincide with that of its RIM produced rival the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Reported in China’s Economic Daily News, sources close to the company claimed that anticipated arrivals of the iPad 2 and BlackBerry PlayBook will be within days of each other in April or May this year, setting up a head to head contest.

The seemingly reputable sources who correctly predicted features of the original iPad prior to launch have also suggested that the iPad 2 will land with front and rear facing cameras to bring it inline with Apple’s cross-product FaceTime capabilities.

What features would you most like to see added to the Apple iPad 2? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the iPad updates. Eager to get your hands on BlackBerry's PlayBook tablet? Check out our hands-on video below for a sneak peak.

HTC ChaCha and Salsa release dates leaked online

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 04:58 AM PST

HTC's oddly named Facebook phones to launch in the UK June 17th

Online retailer and master of handset release leaks Expansys has made the recently announced HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa available for pre-order with both devices scheduled for a June 17th arrival.

The two handsets, both unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona last week sporting Facebook-centric user experiences with the social networking behemoth working closely with the Taiwanese manufacturer in the phones’ design.

Whilst HTC has been keen to stress the handsets are not Facebook-branded devices despite the close cross-company cooperation and a branded Facebook key appearing on both devices’ bottom front panel. Despite offering the handsets on pre-order with a June 17th arrival, Expansys has failed to offer pricing information on the phones HTC has confirmed will launch in the UK during the second quarter of 2011.

Both set to land running Google’s Android 2.4, Gingerbread, mobile OS, the ChaCha and Salsa will each tout a 5-megapixel rear-mounted snapper with a second VGA camera fitted up front. Whilst the ChaCha will host a 2.6-inch 480 x 320p capacitive touchscreen around a full QWERTY keyboard and a landscape optimised version of HTC’s Sense UI, the Salsa will come equipped with a more traditional 3.4-inch touchscreen display.

Which of HTC’s two Facebook phones most takes your fancy? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and take a look at our hands-on video with the Salsa below for some help deciding.

Paid-for ad-free Angry Birds app to hit Android in March

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 03:30 AM PST

Android to follow iOs in ad-free Angry Birds

Global app sensation Angry Birds is to hit Android in its full paid-for, ad-free form next month, developer Rovio has revealed.

Currently available on the Android platform only as a free-to-download, advertising-supported release, the Angry Birds app is to follow its iOS locked counterpart and launch on the Google OS sans advertising.

The announcement, made via the Rovio Twitter feed, follows the recent unveiling of the Android release’s in-app payment system dubbed the Bad Piggy Bank that allows users to pay for the apps advertising to be removed or purchase the Mighty Eagle level solving add-on.

Responding to a fan’s question as to when a paid-for Android version of Angry Birds will be released the developer tweeted: “give us another month and we’ll be there.”

Initially launched via the GetJar Android store back in October the ad-supported full Angry Birds app has since topped 50 million global downloads.

Would you spend a couple of quid on an ad-free Android version of Angry Birds or do the in-app advertisements not phase you? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

While Samsung says the 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab will definitely be released in the first half of 2011, Korean news sites are claiming it could be out next month. That’d mean it be going right up against the Motorola Xoom, HP TouchPad and iPad 2.

Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK released

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 02:56 AM PST

App builders get final version of SDK just ahead of Motorola XOOM's release

Google revealed the first build of its SDK (Software Development Kit) to willing app builders in January, so that they could get going on tablet-optimised apps in time for the launch of the first Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablets.

Today, Google has released the final SDK build, with updated features such as more accurate rendering and previews. It means that developers who were testing their apps can now finalise them and thrust them onto the Android Market ready for any early adopters picking up the Motorola XOOM - the first Android 3.0 tablet – when it launches tomorrow.

Google’s head of Android SDKs Xavier Ducrohet confirmed as much, saying: "The APIs are final, and you can now develop apps targeting this new platform and publish them to Android Market."

The XOOM launches tomorrow, so both Motorola and Google will want as many specially-designed apps to be ready for download as possible, as soon as possible. Will you be getting a XOOM as soon as it launches? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed. In the mean time, check out our video of the XOOM in action below:

Apple iPhone 5 release date delayed until September

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 02:55 AM PST

September launch pegged for delayed iPhone 5 release

Apple’s upcoming revamp to its hugely successful range of iPhone smartphones has been postponed until September, new reports suggest.

Following reports earlier this week that the widely expected iPad 2 has been delayed until June, Apple appears to be facing further release issues as an industry analyst claims the mooted iPhone 5 will suffer a similar fate due to component shortages and late orders.

Expected to be heading for a June or July unveiling and launch, in-keeping with Apple’s previously strict annual product cycles, the highly anticipated iPhone 5 is now believed to be delayed until September with limited touchscreen panels tipped as being the responsible cause.

With touchscreen stocks affecting the demand availability of a number of leading smartphones, Craig Berger, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets has announced: "For the iPhone 5, we continue to hear that a July launch is unlikely, with various casing suppliers and touch suppliers still ramping up, with some chip vendors not having yet received firm iPhone 5 orders, and with other sockets like the image sensor... still in flux.”

Expanding on these expected delays Berger added: "Given these factors, we think a September launch is more likely, off from Apple's traditional iPhone launch schedule, but giving the firm more time to enhance its next-generation instant communications on the phone."

Latest rumours surrounding the upcoming iPhone 5 release have seen the device predicted to host everything from NFC technologies and a slimmer form factor to having a white model launch alongside its black counterpart.

Have you been holding out upgrading your handset in anticipation of the iPhone 5? Let us know what you think of the reported delays via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. Can't wait for the iPhone 5, check out one its main competitors, the Samsung Galaxy S II below.

OS X Lion: Apple planning major overhaul

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 02:02 AM PST

Big changes to OS X UI touted.

OS X Lion isn’t due for release until this summer. But unlike its Snow Leopard predecessor, it promises to bring some major changes to Apple’s desktop software, rather than just a few neat tweaks here and there.

When Lion was first previewed in autumn last year, Apple said it’d be bringing ideas from iOS over to the Mac. But now TechCrunch is claiming this won’t just be seen in a few small areas, but will be part of what they’re calling a, “…much-anticipated UI overhaul.”

Word is that such big changes mean developers will be getting the first early builds of OS X Lion soon. Apple staffers are said to already be using the operating system. The new software comes with Launchpad, a feature that lets you swipe through multiple homescreens, better full screen app support and beefed up Expose, dubbed Mission Control.

With new MacBook Pros coming this week, expect the chatter about OS X Lion to increase even more. Let us know your thoughts on Apple’s plans on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

iTunes plotting move to high quality downloads

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 11:52 PM PST

Labels said to be keen on selling better sounding downloads at higher prices.

Ask any hi-fi buff their beef with iTunes and the world’s other music download services and doubtless they’ll complain about audio quality. That looks set to change, however, with record label execs apparently in talks with Apple and others to bring 24-bit lossless downloads to market.

It all means that you’ll potentially be able to snag a better quality version of the album you’re buying, but at a premium price. The release of Radiohead’s The King of Limbs saw a similar pricing strategy, with ‘CD quality’ copies of the album available for £9, while an MP3 copy sold for £6.

While a move to 24-bit for iTunes, Amazon and 7Digital would be great, it would provide something of a headache for Apple. Because although Macs can throw out 24-bit audio, iOS devices can’t. That means we could see 24-bit support coming to the iPad 2 and iPhone 5, with Cupertino looking to get a jump on its rivals.

Record producer Jimmy Iovine, who works for Universal Music Group, suggested such changes were likely, saying, "We're working with [Apple] and other digital services - download services - to change to 24 bit. And some of their electronic devices are going to be changed as well."

Would you pay more for lossless files? Or are you happy with cheap MP3s? Tell us your thoughts on the T3 Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad launch event 2 March

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 11:31 PM PST

Next-gen iPad finally set for launch after months of teases, leaks and gossip.

The iPad 2 will finally take a bow on 2 March. That’s according to a string of reports in the US, with inside sources delivering the deets on when we can expect to see the next-generation slate for the first time.

All Things D, Reuters and The New York Times have all confirmed the date, saying the bash will be held, as ever, in San Francisco. Each outlet has a strong track record of getting Apple gossip spot on, thanks to well-placed insiders handing over tidbits of info.

The news comes after reports of an iPad 2 delay were quickly quashed by those close to the next-gen slate’s plans. It had been feared the new device wouldn’t make an appearance until June.

It should be noted that we have been here before. An event at the start of February was touted, but quickly forgotten. But with Android 3.0 rivals gathering a head of steam, now would be the perfect time for the iPad 2 to strike back.

What do you think? A hoax, or is Apple finally about to out the iPad 2? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
