News@8pm: iPad 2 leaks and no 3D for Royal wedding

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Nokia's woes grow as the company's CEO announces the former phone giant is "standing on a burning platform". If this declaration of trouble wasn't enough to worry the folks behind the Finnish phone company, its planned salvation move to produce Windows Phone 7 handsets has be branded a joke by Google with a bitter Tweet ridiculing the move.

Exciting Apple devices is a term you either love or hate, either way we have two doozies for you today. Following reports that the eagerly-awaited Apple iPad 2 has officially gone into production, images of Victoria Beckham sporting a £22,000 24-carat gold iPhone 4 were snapped with the shiny-hued device touting a wallpaper of her half naked football hero husband.

Religion splits decision and so do the two religion based tech stories we reported today. Following months of speculation it has been confirmed that the upcoming Royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton will not be shot in 3D disappointing many. Elsewhere the Catholic Church has approved a confessional app for the iPhone... forgive me Apple for I have sinned.

Ahead of MWC a number of HTC devices have leaked with the Wildfire 2 appearing in an official video today. Other upcoming HTC product information appearing today has seen reports of the company's first tablet, the HTC Flyer, being rushed of the production line in order to meet a Q1 release following an MWC unveiling next week.

Google attacks struggling Nokia ahead of Phone 7 deal

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 09:00 AM PST

Nokia, Microsoft deal attacked by Google tweet

Following on from Nokia’s “We are standing on a burning platform” comments earlier today, Google has kicked its competitor whilst down with a derogatory tweet over the mooted upcoming Nokia and Microsoft venture.

With the formerly dominant Finnish phone manufacturer struggling to forge a stronghold in the smartphone market it is widely believed Nokia will unveil a partnership with Microsoft this Friday, February 11th, that will see the N8 maker producing Windows Phone 7 handsets in the future.

On this potential merger between two of its competitors, Google’s VP of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, announced to his fleet of Twitter followers: “Two Turkeys do not make an Eagle” opening with the hashtag #feb11 in reference to the expected announcement.

As well as attacking the imminent partnership unveiling Gundotra’s tweet all but ends rumours that Nokia was looking to product Android powered handsets in order to change its fortunes in the ever growing smartphone market.

Which would you rather see come from Nokia, an Android or a Windows Phone 7 powered smartphone? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Gold iPhone 4 touted by Victoria Beckham

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 08:12 AM PST

24-carat gold iPhone 4 spotted

Victoria Beckham, former Spice Girl and spouse of England football legend, David, has been spotted touting a gold iPhone 4.

Seen at Heathrow airport lady Beckham was caught on camera carrying a gold backed Apple handset that, according to her PR representative Jo Milloy is a "standard gold iphone available to buy for less than 1k."

At just £1,000 Beckham's shiny-hued device is relatively cheap compared to the ultra high-end custom modified handsets that emanate from the mind and studio of gadg-blinger Stuart Hughes. With 150 grams of 24-carat gold crafted in to the device's shell, Hughes' adaptation of the gold iPhone lines up at a hefty £22,000.

Whilst splashing out £22,000 on a customised handset might seem extravagant to some, it is reletivelty cheap compared to a number of Hughes’ modded creations that have featured on T3.com in the past. In recent months Hughes’ £40,000 T-Rex tooth touting iPhone followed the world’s most expensive iPhone 4 that thanks to over 100-carats of 500 individual flawless cut diamonds weighed in at hefty £5 million.

As well as decking her iPhone out in a shade fitting with hubby’s golden balls, Beckham’s gold Apple handset was snapped sporting a very personal lock screen image as David Beckham can be seen posing topless for his wife.

Which of Stuart Hughes’ handset adaptations has most piqued your interest in high-end smartphone customisation? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo 3DS UK price drops to £197 courtesy of Tesco

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 07:15 AM PST

Sub-£200 3DS offer lasts just two days

Retail giant Tesco has unveiled the UK’s cheapest price for the Nintendo 3DS to date with the glasses-free 3D console available for pre-order priced just £197.

Undercutting supermarket competitor Sainsbury’s by £2.99, the Tesco offer sadly runs only until tomorrow, Thursday February 10th, with wannabe 3DS owners looking to make use of the sub-£200 price tag required to first obtain a special code from VoucherCodes.co.uk.

Having aquired the redemption code 3D portable console shoppers are than needed to follow a link to the Tesco site where £20 will be removed from the device’s standard £217 price point.

Yesterday saw the official unveiling of the full list of 3D titles that will launch alongside the 3DS console in the UK on March 25th. Joining the likes of Ninty’s very own Pilotwings Resort and nintendogs in the 13 strong list of titles will be the sporting powerhouse Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 and the console classic Super Street Fighter IV.

Is the Nintendo 3DS’ price tag an acceptable sum to fork out for glasses-free 3D gaming or is the new £197 mark still too high? Share your views on the console’s imminent arrival with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Flyer tablet to launch in Q1 following MWC unveiling

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 06:36 AM PST

HTC tablet to land Q1 as company fails to wait for Android 3.0

HTC has rushed the final production stages of its upcoming first tablet release to ensure it hits stores in Q1 following a MWC 2011 unveiling, latest reports suggest.

Believed to be dubbed the Flyer, HTC’s first tablet device is reported to have rushed through early production runs at Pegatron in a bid to launch in the opening quarter of 2011 and arrive before the expectedly crowd pleasing Apple iPad 2.

Set to take on a 7-inch form factor and sport a tablet-friendly version of the company’s smartphone Sense UI named Sensation, previously leaked specs for the Flyer will see the device land boasting a 1024 x 600p resolution display, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with flash and a front-facing snapper to allow for video calling.

One victim of the early tablet push, however, could see the Flyer launch running version 2.3 of Google’s Android mobile operating system, Gingerbread as opposed to the tablet-attuned version 3.0, Honeycomb, which is currently readying for arrival aboard the Motorola Xoom.

What is more important to you in the first HTC tablet, its OS or imminent arrival? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Catholic Church approves virtual confession iPhone app

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 06:00 AM PST

The greatest development in religion since Catholicism Wow! and the Buddy Christ.

The Catholic Church has approved an application which allows users to confess their sins on the go without visiting the dreaded confession box.

Confession: A Roman Catholic App offers Jesus-followers a personal conscience profile based on their age, sex, job and marital status, while helping them deal with their earthly misdemeanors.

The £1.19 app, is a step back towards the box for at those who've not confessed to a priest in a while rather than a replacement for the Holy Sacrament.. When partaking in the virtual confession, believers can choose from a list of sins or add their own, while choosing from seven different acts of contrition. More importantly it supports the iPhone's Retina Display.

A spokesperson from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales told BBC News the app was a "useful tool to help people prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation". The Church believes in embracing new technology and this creative app will hopefully help people to make a good confession."

It is thought to be the first time the church has approved an app, which is part of the Pope's drive for catholics to "make good use of their presence in the digital world."

We still think the Buddy Christ (pictured) would have a greater chance of bringing the faith into the 21st Century though.

Internet-connected TV service YouView delayed until 2012

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 04:53 AM PST

YouView heads announce IPTV service is to be pushed back to 2012

The upcoming internet-connected TV service YouView has been hit by further delays as its makers announce the platform will now miss its 2011 intended release date, instead being pegged for a 2012 arrival.

Formerly known as Project Canvas, the ongoing plans were originally scheduled to launch back in 2010 before being struck by a number of issues, most notably the departure of the service’s mastermind, Anthony Rose, who moved on to Intel seemingly taking YouView’s forward momentum with him.

Speaking on the latest delay YouView CEO Richard Halton said: “Our focus has always been to deliver a product to consumers that is right, but not rushed. Creating a truly open TV platform that will bring consumers increased choice has required significant technological innovation. Our timings for the launch reflect the scale and complexity of this project."

Talking with TechRadar a YouView spokesperson added: "We keep all timings under review and our priority is to ensure we get the product right. Development of YouView is progressing well and our shareholders are fully supportive of our strategy for delivery."

Has the original excitement and novel nature of YouView worn off to be replaced by tired, disinterested waiting? Share your thoughts on the IPTV service with us via th eT3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Your Tweets no longer private according to PCC

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 04:51 AM PST

Thanks to a recent ruling by the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) your tweets on Twitter are now public.

The news comes after Sarah Baskerville, a manager at the Department of Transport had her tweets – which, according to reports were openly critical of the government, and referred to a training course instructor as “mental” – were published in the Daily Mail and Independent on Sunday.

Baskerville insisted these comments were strictly for her 700 followers, but the PCC ruled that, in fact, “the potential audience for the information was actually much larger than the 700 people who followed the complainant directly, not least because any message could easily be retweeted.”

Maybe it’s time to set your social networking privacy settings to, “so secure that not even a seasoned Daily Mail hack can see them.”

Sony NGP release date and price leaks in the US

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 04:21 AM PST

Release date and pricing information for the recently announced Sony NGP, formerly the PSP 2, has leaked with the portable console surprisingly set to hit the US next year.

Leaked via a snapshot of an internal database screen from retailer GameStop the emerging information, if accurate, would see the pocket-friendly Sony NGP hitting US stores on January 1st 2012 with a $299.99 price tag.

We must stress that these details should be taken with a hefty pinch of salt with a post-Christmas January 1st release date appearing more of a placeholder than a confirmed, and very unusual, arrival time. With Sony having previously confirmed that the NGP will come with an affordable price tag, the sub-$300 marker given to the upcoming device seems to suggest this.

Officially announced late last month the Sony NGP is set to reinvigorate the stoic PSP with a tantalising selection of new features and credentials that will include a 5-inch 960 x 544p OLED touchscreen display, touch-sensitive back, dual analogue sticks, cameras both front and back, a chip which Sony says is the most advanced available and the connection selection of 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi options.

Information on a UK arrival time or pricing is still unknown.

Would you be tempted into buying a Sony NGP if it hit the UK on New Years day or would the post-Christmas money constraints put you off? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Pioneer Dreambook ePad F10 Windows 7 tablet announced

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 03:24 AM PST

Will it dual boot into Android? Here's hoping

We had a little play with Panasonic’s VIERA tablet at CES in January, which means you'd be forgiven for thinking that fellow TV manufacturer Pioneer is getting in on the slate action with its own answer to the iPad. Think again: this - the Pioneer Dreambook ePad F10 - actually comes from Pioneer Computers, not the premium home cinema company of the same name.

Despite looking almost exactly the same as the iPad, the Dreambook does differ quite a bit. For a start, Pioneer has chosen to stock it with Windows 7 (although there are claims that it’ll dual boot with Android), and it’s a 10.1, 1024 x 600 resolution display. On top of that there’s a 1.3-Meg camera, an SD card slot and an 8 hour battery life.

The killer feature could be the option to spec it out with up to 2GB of RAM (backed up by a 1.5 GHz Intel Z670 Oak Trail processor) and up to 128GB of flash storage. There’s no word on price or release date yet, but we’ll keep you posted. Keen? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Buckingham Palace rule out 3D Royal wedding broadcast

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 03:08 AM PST

3D adoptors will not get Royal wedding content

The upcoming royal union between Prince William and Kate Middleton will not be broadcast in 3D as widely expected, Buckingham Palace has revealed.

Despite Sky’s best efforts to secure 3D broadcast rights to the most anticipated Royal wedding of a generation, the Palace has deflated hopes of an extra-dimensional offering with Patrick Harrison, press secretary to the Prince of Wales announcing via email: "I'm afraid I have to say that we have decided not to progress with 3D coverage of the service on this occasion.”

Explaining the decision to forgo the emerging future of broadcast technology Harrison said: "There are a number of reasons for this, most notably the additional camera footprint in the abbey, the relatively small (albeit growing) audience for 3D, and our desire to not be distracted away from negotiating and facilitating the optimal 2D, radio, photographic and online coverage of the day."

With a number of events from the upcoming 2012 Olympics being planned for the 3D treatment in order to archive the footage for future generations it is disappointing that the Palace would deem the emerging tech’s small audience base a reason not to take the opportunity to offer iconic footage for the future.

Harrison concluded: "I know you have all become increasingly enthusiastic about 3D and I'm sorry that this will come as a disappointment.” Adding: "I hope you feel the process we have gone through will be helpful for other live events and of course we do not rule out facilitating 3D at some point in the future."

This teased “point in the future” could well relate to the Queen’s speech which Sky, who filmed a mock wedding in 3D in attempt to seal the Royal wedding rights, will be involved with alongside the BBC and ITV for the first time in 2011.

What are your views on the Royal wedding not being filmed in 3D for current broadcasting or future archives? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google Translate iPhone app official

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Updated app builds on three-year-old web app.

Google has just confirmed its iPhone translation app is now sitting pretty in the App Store. The add-on, available until now as web app for Apple’s blower, lets you speak or write a phrase, before being translated into your language of choice.

If you want to use the speech input function, there are 15 languages available. That means you can can gabble into your phone and it’ll work out just what you’re saying. You can choose to either have words translated into text, or spoken back at you by your blower in 23 different languages.

Text can be enlarged to make reading easier. If you’re a lazy British linguist, this also means you can simply shove the phone in someone’s face and hope they understand. The app also eliminates the infuriating trend of speaking slowly and loudly in English until someone, anyone, understands.

The Google Translate iPhone app is up for grabs now. Take a look and let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nokia CEO: "We are standing on a burning platform"

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 02:00 AM PST

Stephen Elop says Nokia is losing out in almost every area of its business.

Nokia’s Stephen Elop was brought in as CEO to freshen up thinking at the Finnish phone maker. And boy does he not mince his words. In an outspoken and frank memo to staff at Espoo, Elop has claimed that Nokia is, “…standing on a burning platform,” facing a battle in all fronts as it loses out in top, middle and bottom range markets.

Elop starts by explaining, “…we have multiple points of scorching heat that are fuelling a blazing fire around us,” before going on to be brutally honest about Apple’s success. He says Cupertino now owns the top-end smartphone market and that in four years they have “changed the game” and that Nokia, “…still don’t have a phone that is close to their experience.”

That’s explosive enough, but Elop then turns his attention to Android, which he says now has the middle ground stitched up. “In about two years, Android created a platform that attracts application developers, service providers and hardware manufacturers. Android came in at the high-end, they are now winning the mid-range, and quickly they are going downstream to phones under €100.”

He even says that Nokia’s traditional stronghold, developing markets, is being battered by local manufacturers in China, who are able to undercut the Finnish phone giant.

Elop is clearly not impressed by what he’s seen so far at Nokia. He says, “We fell behind, we missed big trends, and we lost time. At that time, we thought we were making the right decisions; but, with the benefit of hindsight, we now find ourselves years behind.”

MeeGo is also given both barrels. “We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market.”

Elop is preparing to reveal big changes at Nokia’s Capital Markets Day in London this Friday, before new phones are outed at MWC. Word is a tie-up with Microsoft is on the cards, with a Nokia Windows Phone 7 effort a real possibility.

What do you make of Elop’s blistering attack? Has he nailed it? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPad 2 production begins

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 01:11 AM PST

Report details specs and confirms Retina Display is MIA.

Production lines have finally started rolling for the iPad 2. That’s according to the Wall Street Journal, which has garnered the news from, “people familiar with the matter”.

These same insiders say that the next-gen tablet will be thinner than the current iPad, with a faster processor, beefed up graphics and greater memory. The sources also confirm that the iPad 2 will pack at least one camera, with video conferencing being put front and centre on the new device.

However, there will be on Retina Display on board, with the screen said to match that of the firs-generation iPad.

The WSJ has no word on just when we’re likely to see the iPad 2 get the official nod from Apple, with Cupertino refusing to respond to the claims. With the new slate now being assembled, the chances of that rumoured end of February event, followed by a March release, look increasingly likely.

Dell Windows 7 tablet planned

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 11:50 PM PST

Business-only offering as Dell follows HP's Windows tablet lead.

Dell has confirmed it’s working on a Windows 7 tablet and will release the Microsoft-backed effort later this year. But like the HP Slate before it, this will be a Windows tablet that only business types can lay their hands on.

Revealed during an event to showcase the PC maker’s latest business machines, Dell’s Windows 7 tablet is set to rock a 10-inch screen, with workers who need “greater mobility” the key target.

That means this will not be widely available to tablet fanatics around the globe. Some would say that’s a blessing seeing as Windows 7 is hardly the ideal OS for using on touchscreen tablets. With the iPad 2 coming, a string of Honeycomb devices not far behind and the much-vaunted PalmPad to follow, Dell would clearly have a hard time selling a Windows 7 tablet to the masses.

Is this a gadget worth getting het up over? Or just another attempt to prove Windows 7 works away from the desktop? Tell us your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

E7 our most important smartphone of 2011, says Nokia

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 11:38 PM PST

Forthcoming MeeGo phones take a back seat according to Nokia exec.

MeeGo, Symbian updates, a deal with Microsoft? You’d be forgiven for thinking these were Nokia’s most important issues in 2011, especially after new CEO Stephen Elop claimed the Finnish phone maker was “standing on a burning platform”.

Is this Nokia's handset saviour? Nokia E7 pictures

But in smartphone terms, one Nokia exec thinks a blower unveiled back in September last year and only now hitting shelves is the company’s major priority in 2011.

Speaking to Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti, Ukko Lappalainen, a senior player at Nokia said, "The E7 is by far the most important model for us this year when looking at sales expectations." While the E7 is undoubtedly top notch, with a capacious 4-inch screen, QWERTY slider and rock solid design, this may seem surprising.

But with Nokia keen to recapture past glories in the smartphone arena, it’s perhaps not so much of a shock that it’s putting its faith in an already outed mobile, rather than one rocking MeeGo, or even one using Windows Phone 7. The latter is something gossip hounds insist is about to happen.

Will you be buying an E7? Or are you waiting to see what Nokia has up its sleeve at MWC? Let us know on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
