News@8pm: iPad 2 release and Kelly Brook game lands Posted: 21 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com. Apple's iPad 2 has been expected to be announced for a number of weeks now with the second-generation tablet now believed to be launching in the coming weeks after the original iPad underwent a number of price cuts. An Apple service not lowering its price, however, is the new in-app purchases that has seen Apple come under attack from regulators who are now looking into the company's 30 per cent take of all sales.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kelly Brook models for a number of leading tech companies and now the super sexy Brit has landed in a video game as the face of Lynx deodorant. Not nearly as attractive but more powerful, Lady Gaga has officially broken Apple's iTunes one million download records and looks set to capitalise on Google's intended celebrity YouTube channels that has earmarked $100 million for the use of 20 high profile celebs.
Apple's MacBook Pro is scheduled for a revamp and that revamp now looks to have been dated with the leading laptop range reported set to be unveiled and hit stores this Thursday, February 24th. Elsewhere on the Apple rumour front and the Cupertino tech giant is claimed to be working on Apple-branded fully-blown television sets following a job listing which appeared on the company's site.
London's Underground network is readying itself for the long-awaited introduction of mobile phone coverage after Chinese firm Huawei announced it would front the £50 million bill to implement the system. More upcoming tech news will see Motorola's Xoom tablet launch in the US this Thursday but without Flash compatibility that is disappointingly being held off until later this year with a Spring 2011 arrival pegged. Check out the T3 hands-on video of the Motorola Xoom below.

Samsung glasses-free 3D TV not on the agenda for 2011 Posted: 21 Feb 2011 09:40 AM PST Samsung TV fans, you better get used to the 3D goggles... Samsung has made no plans to chuck away the 3D specs having ruled out glasses-free 3D TV in the near future.
T3 spoke to Andy Griffiths, Vice President of Consumer Electronics for Samsung UK at the Samsung European forum in Budapest, who revealed that Smart TVs will be the main focus from a Samsung TV manufacturing point of view.
When we quizzed Mr Griffiths on the possibility of glasses-free 3D TV already being in the works he revealed that Samsung "have no plans to launch a product like that at this stage."
Griffiths added, "We believe there is a lot of work to do to get the quality right and ready for consumers homes. We have no immediate plans for glasses-free 3D. What we are concentrating on as the Samsung brand is a fully immersive high quality picture experience with goggles."
Whether it would be something that Samsung would have to take into consideration in the near future, Griffiths said, "Possibly. There is alot of work to do. We are one year into the 3D glasses launch and we believe that there is still a lot of good potential in that area and still more to do going forward".
Toshiba demonstrated glasses-free 3D TV technology at CES back in January, while the Nintendo 3DS and the LG Optimus 3D phone are examples of glasses-free 3D tech set to launch in 2011.
Samsung TV fans it seems will have to wait a little longer before being able to dump those specs.
If you do want to see one of the glassses-free gadgets you can own in 2011, see below for our hands-on video with the LG Optimus 3D phone.

Motorola Xoom release set for Feburary 24th without Flash Posted: 21 Feb 2011 09:00 AM PST Google's Honeycomb tablet OS to feature Flash issues Motorola’s first foray into the tablet market the Motorola Xoom is to launch in the US this Thursday, February 24th but will lack Adobe’s Flash compatibility until later in the year.
Having repeatedly mocked Apple’s lack of Flash compatibility in its iPhone and iPad devices the first tablet to launch running Google’s tablet-centric Android 3.0, Honeycomb, OS, the Motorola Xoom will touch down in the states later this week with early adopters having to wait until “Spring 2011” for full Flash credentials to arrive.
Stressing the importance of Flash to consumers, UK retailer the Dixons Group recently pulled sales of the Toshiba’s Folio 100 tablet despite holding UK exclusivity on the device because it did not support Adobe’e video player software. The Xoom, which is expected to hit the UK during Q2 should have been given its Flash upgrade in time for its European arrival.
With a fleet of Honeycomb powered tablets announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week ahead of their respective global rollouts, Adobe will need to hurry its Flash 10.2 Honeycomb compatibility if the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and LG Optimus Pad are to launch unaffected.
Is Flash inclusion integral to a tablet’s success or could one of the Android brigade topple the iPad without the Adobe software? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. Motorola Xoom tablet hands-on

Lady Gaga breaks iTunes one million downloads record Posted: 21 Feb 2011 08:05 AM PST Twitter and iTunes combine in Lady Gaga digital triumph Eccentric pop sensation and oddball character Lady Gaga has seen her new single ‘Born this Way’ becoming the fastest selling track in iTunes history, new reports have revealed.
Securing more than one million downloads in under five days, Gaga’s latest track has helped the artist to top the iTunes singles charts in 23 countries simultaneously despite causing controversy that kicked off over micro-blogging site Twitter.
Whilst the debate raged over Twitter and the hashtags #bornthiswayfriday and #expressyourself traded trending honours during the week, the furore around the release’s possible plagiaristic credentials only succeeded in further pushing its download figures, via Apple’s digital music outlet, to new heights.
Elsewhere in the tech world, Gaga could be one of 20 celebrities set to cash in on Google’s push to introduce celebrity YouTube channels with the Poker Face star, whose official Vevo video for Bad Romance totted up 346 million views, expected to lead the $5 million a piece run on individual high-end video content channels.
With so many digital ways for famous faces to tout their wares nowadays, how do you escape the commercialised influx of content? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Amazon app store to allow pre-loading on Android devices Posted: 21 Feb 2011 07:59 AM PST Market faces still competition from Amazon. Amazon's forthcoming Android app store will enable users to pre-load the apps they'd like on their device before it arrives on their doorstep - providing they buy the gadget itself from Amazon.
Because app purchases will to joined to an Amazon account rather than a Google account, soon-to-be Android device owners can buy the apps, which will automatically appear on the device once everything is set-up.
The service mimics the way Amazon Kindle owners are able to download content to their new ebook readers.
The new functionality, something that isn't yet offered by Google's Android Market Webstore, might give Amazon the edge with impatient buyers keen to get going even before their device arrives.
We're still awaiting news on when Amazon's rival app store will finally arrive, but it should make for an interesting ride, with Amazon sure to offer some competitive prices and an interface that new Android owners will already be familiar with.

Apple iPad 2 release date imminent as iPad price drops Posted: 21 Feb 2011 07:44 AM PST Apple iPad price dropped ahead of iPad 2 unveiling Apple’s second-generation tablet, the mooted iPad 2, is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks as a number of UK network providers lower the price of the original iPad.
With price drops frequently used to flush out old stocks ahead of an updated product arrival, the move by Everything Everywhere partners Orange and T-Mobile to reduce the price of the iPad has sparked much speculation of an imminent iPad 2 announcement.
Having formerly offered the Apple iPad Wi-Fi + 3G for an upfront payment of £199.99 plus a two-year, £25 per month contract for existing customers and at £229.99 on a £27 per month contract for new customers, Orange has revealed that it will now host the Apple tablet for an upfront payment of just £99 to all wannabe owners.
Whilst T-Mobile will also adopt the new £99 pricing system for the Wi-Fi + 3G iPad, this offer will only be available to the network’s existing customer base.
As we await official confirmation from Apple that a follow-up to the phenomenally popular and market-reviving iPad is indeed in the works rumours continue to circulate as to what features the expected iPad 2 will feature. Topping the list of expected arrivals is the inclusion of front and rear-facing cameras, Apple’s FaceTime video calling technology and a slimmer, lighter form factor.
Do the new, lower iPad prices tempt you into splashing out on the Apple tablet or encourage you to hold off for the second-generation model? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds. ------------------------------------------------------ T3 on the iPad: 187 issue walkthrough

Google to introduce lucrative YouTube celebrity channels Posted: 21 Feb 2011 04:57 AM PST Celeb channels to hinder emerging YouTube talent Google is looking to transforming YouTube’s huge viewer figures into equally massive profits through the introduction of celebrity-branded channels, latest reports suggest.
With a reported $100 million earmarked for the project, Google hopes to tempt 20 well established and frequently searched celebrities into producing original, high-end content for their dedicated YouTube channels.
Having bought YouTube back in 2006 for $1.65 billion, Google has struggled to turn the video sharing site into a consistently affluent profit spinner despite becoming one of the most visited sites on the web. Although set to offer commercially successful stars such as Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber huge wads of cash, Google’s funded celebrity channels could have a negative affect on the previously undiscovered talents YouTube has frequently sent to stardom.
Discussing the celebrity channels move and the implications this will have on independent YouTube musicians and stars, independent YouTube success Alex Negrete said: “I’m not really expecting handouts from Google, but I feel that they should definitely contribute more to people that have a proven track record of being consistent and devoted to the site from the beginning, rather than people that are using it just because they’re getting some money thrown at them.”
Which celebrity faces would you most like to see popping up on their own YouTube Celebrity Channel? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and sign up to the T3 YouTube channel here.

Apple working on television sets following job posting? Posted: 21 Feb 2011 04:16 AM PST Apple to expand TV range with full blown television sets? Apple could be en route to transform its pet project into a mainstream venture as a job posting on the company’s website hints towards to arrival of Apple-branded television sets.
Having revamped its Apple’s TV offering, an internet-connected downloadable content hub, back in September after years of pushing its original Apple TV box, the Cupertino-based company is now hunting for a new employee who will reportedly be tasked with furthering its TV offerings.
With ‘TV’ being the key term of interest for the new role, the application, which added the role will revolve around "new power management designs and technologies", has opened much speculation around possible upcoming Apple Television sets. Whilst these rumours are currently anything but confirmed, Apple’s mouth-watering design skills and repeatedly impressive display technologies present a fanciful prospect for a future TV venture.
Would an Apple-branded television take your fancy or should the big A stick to what it knows and leave high-end TVs to the likes of Samsung and Sony? Let us know your thoughts on the matter via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Huawei to provide London Underground mobile coverage Posted: 21 Feb 2011 03:33 AM PST Huawei gift London £50 London Underground phone network London’s Underground transport network is to receive widespread mobile phone coverage as Huawei bids to install transmitters on the tube system ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
Dubbed “a gift from one Olympic nation to another,” Chinese firm Huawei, makers of Three’s popular Mi-Fi device, has announced it is looking to supply the London Underground with a mobile phone coverage system, estimated to cost around £50 million, free of charge.
Although keen to transform the capital’s commuter black spot into an extension of users’ business and social communication arms, Transport for London has reiterated its concerns that the expenditure of installing such a system should not be placed on taxpayers or increased ticket fares.
A spokesperson for TFL said: "Transport for London and the Mayor of London are currently in discussion with mobile phone operators and other suppliers about the potential provision of mobile phone services on the deep Tube network.” They added: "Given the financial pressures on TfL's budgets, any solution would need to be funded through mobile operators with no cost to fare or taxpayers. Discussions are ongoing."
Despite offering widespread communication to millions of tube users, Conservative MP Patrick Mercer has acted as captain buzz kill, highlighting possible dangers of the planned service. Although dubbing the underground mobile network “extremely helpful,” Mercer announced the service, that would mimic those already in place in Hong Kong and Paris, would “absolutely answers a terrorist's prayers,” offering a means of detonating devices on the Underground network.
Would you welcome phone coverage on the London Underground or resent the emergence of mindless phone chatter making your commute even less enjoyable? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Palm Pre Plus set for webOS 2.0 update Posted: 21 Feb 2011 03:01 AM PST HP working on software boost for old phones. Packing a Palm Pre Plus? Bummed that HP has put the kibosh on a software boost to webOS 2.0? Well, don’t be. Because it seems O2 might just have a much-needed bump for Palm Pre Plus owners.
Despite HP denying that a webOS 2.0 update would be available for the second-gen Pre, it now appears O2 has convinced the mobile maker that releasing an update is worthwhile. An O2 Germany rep said, “The Pre Plus… will get an official update to webOS 2.0 soon, but it won’t be available as OTA, you have to use the webosdoctor software to get it onto your devices, you will be able to download it from the HP website.”
Sadly, original Pre and Pixi Plus owners won’t be feeling the webOS 2.0 love. That said, at least punters packing a Pre Plus will soon be able to give their phones the update it deserves.

Apple in-app subs services targeted by regulators Posted: 21 Feb 2011 02:47 AM PST Apple's 30 per cent content fee issue of contention Apple’s recently released in-app subscription services has come under fire from regulators as the company’s 30 per cent take of profits causes publishers to raise prices.
Whilst Apple has always taken a hefty chunk of App download fees, the company’s latest move into in-app content has become the target of anti-trust regulators in the US and Europe as publishers wishing to distribute iPhone and iPad-bound electronic versions of their printed media are told they will have to fork over a third of all profits.
Discussing the changes to Apple’s publishing limitations at a meeting of around 60 leading European publishers last week, the International Newspaper Marketing Association announced: "Publishers simply can't afford to invest in new technology, products and services when the platform charges them 30% of total revenue."
Defending its new terms as a business model beneficial to all parties, Apple CEO Steve Jobs formerly describing the subscriptions services said: "We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone."
Talking with the BBC, industry analyst from Forrester Research, James McQuivey, said of Apple’s planned publishing charges: "Taking a 30% toll amounts to a massive increase in the cost basis of a content business that will kill it.” He added: "In the end, Apple envisions a world in which people don't consume any kind of digital media without its help.”
T3 last week became one of the first publishers to offer the iPad-enhanced edition of T3 Magazine to consumers via Apple’s new in-app subscription service. Available to download here and with a free preview issue followed by single issues purchasable for £2.99 a piece, T3’s new subs offers allow users to pick up three digital copies for just £5.99. Six issue and 12 issue subscriptions are also available priced £11.99 and £23.99 respectively.
What do you think of Apple’s new in-app subscription services and the charges to be implemented on publishers looking to make their digital content available via the system? Intel boss blasts Nokia's Microsoft move Posted: 21 Feb 2011 02:03 AM PST Windows Phone 7 was wrong choice for Nokia according to Intel CEO Intel’s clearly still smarting after Nokia’s momentous decision to ditch MeeGo, the open source OS it was making in conjunction with the chip maker. Indeed, Intel’s CEO didn’t mince his words when asked about Espoo’s decision to load up its phones with Windows Phone 7, eschewing MeeGo and deciding against a tie-up with Google Android.
During a conference call, Paul Otellini said, “I wouldn't have made the decision he made, I would probably have gone to Android if I were him. MeeGo would have been the best strategy but he concluded he couldn't afford it."
Warming to his theme, Otellini said Microsoft had simply offered to much money for Nokia to resist, suggesting that any Nokia Windows Phone 7 mobiles would struggle to stand out in a crowded market. "It would have been less hard [to stand out] on Android, on MeeGo he could have done it,” he said.
Otellini also said that Intel was looking for new MeeGo partners, claiming there was still an appetite for the stillborn mobile OS. “We will find another partner. The carriers still want a third ecosystem and the carriers want an open ecosystem, and that's the thing that drives our motivation.”

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:04 AM PST Tablet peeped, even though Sony Ericsson claims it has no slate plans. Sony Ericsson is working on a 4G tablet, with a prototype of the next-gen network-packing device snapped last week during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The slate, spied by eagle-eyed Dutch bloggers at the TDIA stand, appear to cut a chunky figure, with a bezel that would make even the current-generation iPad blush. According to reps on the stand, the Sony Ericsson 4G tablet will come loaded with Android, with a 3 megapixel camera up front for video calling.
Sony Ericsson last week denied it was working on a tablet, a claim seemingly back up by leaked designs and details of the Sony-only S1.

Intel Light Peak: USB 3.0 killer heading to Apple machines Posted: 20 Feb 2011 11:58 PM PST Intel-made connection tech said to be winging its way to Apple machines first. Intel’s Light Peak tech is set to take a bow imminently, with Apple the first computer cobbler to benefit from the super-speedy tech that’s set to bring USB 3.0 to its knees.
A ‘source’ has told the guys at CNET that the new technology will be revealed by Apple, under a different name, very soon. Light Peak has long been spoken about as the ultimate way to connect multiple gadgets to PCs, with speeds of up to 10GBps in both directions at the same time.
The tech had been based on fibre optics, but will now use copper instead. Either way, it seems Intel, and now Apple, think this is the tech that could make USB 3.0 obsolete. Sony is also said to be keen on loading its machines with Light Peak too.
With the new MacBook Pro due to drop this week, there’s every chance we could see Intel’s new tech unleashed in the coming days. Let us know what you think of this next-gen marvel on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
