Sonos Controller for Android app announced

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 10:47 AM PST

Android app joins iOS Sonos stable.

Sonos has today announced it'll be launching an Android remote control app to allow owners of the multi-room audio systems to control the output using their smartphones.

The Sonos Controller for Android joins the successful iPhone and iPad versions of the app will give users control of internet radio stations, podcasts and a host of apps like Spotify, Napster and Last.fm on devices like the Sonos S5.

The app will also give you access to your entire digital music library if it is stored on computers around the home and will give you the option of playing your music in any room around the house if you have more than one S5 Zone Player on the go. You can choose different volume levels for each room, or indeed different music depending on the mood.

The attractive UI continues in the same vein as the popular iPhone, iPod touch and iPad apps that have already proved a massive hit with Sonos system owners.

The Android app will be a free download from the Market in March and will make its debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 coming to Vodafone UK post MWC

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 08:58 AM PST

Vodafone seemingly confirm Galaxy Tab 2 arrival

Vodafone has teased the imminent arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 with the mooted Android 3.0 tablet device seemingly bound for the red-hued network in the UK.

Creating a whirlwind of speculation, Vodafone UK today posted a link on its official Facebook page pointing followers to an article suggesting the Android 3.0, Honeycomb, OS is to touch down on the next generation Samsung tablet.

Adding fuel to the fire the Vodafone post read: "There are some great Android smartphones in the pipeline - Nexus S, Xperia Play and LG Optimus 3D - with more coming to Vodafone soon. But Android's just about to get even bigger with the launch of the first Honeycomb tablets around the corner."

Whilst this Facebook post makes no reference to the network supporting any such future tablets, there seems no feasible reason why Vodafone would draw its followers' attentions to this article without an ulterior motive with future road mapping in mind.

It is widely expected following a number of seemingly conclusive conference timeline leaks that Samsung will officially unveil the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 alongside the Samsung Galaxy S 2 during this Sunday’s Mobile World Congress opening conference.

Will the second-generation Galaxy Tab make bigger and better strides to tackling the dominance of the Apple iPad? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest live from MWC 2011 and the Samsung press conference.

Windows Phone 7 update delayed until March 8th?

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 08:16 AM PST

New delays hit Phone 7 update

The first major software update for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system has been delayed with the release reportedly now set for a March 8th arrival.

Previously pegged for a widely rumoured albeit unconfirmed February 7th rollout it is now expected that the Phone 7 update will be officially unveiled by Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer during his Mobile World Congress speech next Monday, February 14th, ahead of a March 8th launch.

Following the late October arrival of the Windows Phone 7 operating system, the first software update, dubbed “NoDo”, will reportedly add a number of key new features to the fleet of Phone 7 supporting handsets including the launch elusive Copy & Paste function.

Having officially stated that the NoDo update will land in “early 2011,” Microsoft has to date remained relatively tight-lipped on the software that is expected to add improved marketplace search and CDMA device support to the OS.

What features would you most like to see touch down for Phone 7 with the upcoming software update? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC release announced for PS3

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 07:20 AM PST

PS3 to get Black Ops DLC one month after Xbox users

The first downloadable content pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, First Strike, is to be made available for the PlayStation 3 on March 3rd, more than a month after it hit the Xbox 360.

Having landed on February 1st for users of the Microsoft branded console, First Strike has been officially confirmed for the PS3 bringing with it the same array of additional content as seen on its earlier Xbox arrival.

Adding four new multiplayer maps and an additional Zombie mode map entitled Ascension, the PS3 First Strike DLC will see PlayStation gamers tackling levels set in Kowloon city, China, Discovery, a German Antarctic research post, Berlin Wall and an ice hockey arena known simply as Stadium.

Having been forced to wait more than a month longer than Xbox gamers for the additional content following an exclusivity deal between Microsoft and Activision, the March 3rd First Strike arrival will attempt to appease angered PS3 touting Black Ops gamers who have repeatedly knocked the title’s Xbox bias.

Everything Everywhere to open first dual-branded stores

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 06:30 AM PST

Everything Everywhere merger to open dual-branded retail outlets

Everything Everywhere, the amalgamation between the T-Mobile and Orange networks in the UK, has announced the launch of its first joint venture physical stores with the inaugural retail outlet to open its doors in Altrincham on February 18th.

Combining handsets and services from both networks the Everything Everywhere stores will attempt to offer what the company is calling a “21st century retail experience” with the outlets to adopt very Apple-esque simplistic glass and wood design features.

The five trial stores, which will be heavily branded with the company’s Everything Everywhere moniker, will allow visitors to interact with fully functional devices, use the stores’ free Wi-Fi connections and charge their personal handsets no matter what network they are on.

Following the opening of the flagship Altrincham store, outlets in Bishops Stortford and Eltham will open within a fortnight with Lowestoft and Evesham stores to land within the month to join the more than 720 individual branded Orange and T-Mobile shops currently trading across Britain.

Speaking on the upcoming launches Andrew Coull, Vice President of Everything Everywhere’s retail arm said: “We’re passionate about building stronger relationships with customers of both our brands, and this is the latest in a string of live retail trials that will help us deliver a unique 21st century retail experience for our customers, creating a fun, interactive environment which brings our products and services to life.”

Apple iPad 3 release date set for September 2011?

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 04:48 AM PST

iPad 3 to follow iPad 2 with 2011 arrival

With the iPad 2 still just an eagerly expected pipedream rumours have already kicked into action around the third-generation Apple tablet with the mooted iPad 3 reportedly heading for a September 2011 launch.

As speculation grows around exactly when Apple will formerly unveil the iPad 2, industry blogger John Gruber of Daring Daring Fireball has suggested that the iPad 3 will launch just six months after its yet unconfirmed predecessor with a September arrival on the wildly speculative cards.

Discussing yesterday’s announcement of the HP TouchPad, Gruber seeming let slip arrival details of the iPad 3 stating: "If my theory is right, they're not only going to be months behind the iPad 2, but if they slip until late summer, they might bump up against the release of the iPad 3."

Whilst this claim is purely speculative it poses serious questions about the frequency with which Apple will re-jig its tablet device.

The iPad 2 is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks ahead of an April launch that will see the dominant tablet adopt front and rear-facing cameras, a slimmer form factor and more processing power than the original model.

Will we really see two new iPad models in 2011? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Google/Facebook discuss joint takeover of Twitter

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 03:57 AM PST

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Google and Facebook have sat down with Twitter on several occasions to discuss the possibility of a takeover.

The report also sheds light on some of the numbers being thrown around during these talks, with some valuing Twitter at around the $10 billion (£6.3 billion) mark – significantly more than the $3.7 billion (£2.3 billion) valuation in December.

Despite radio silence from the three companies involved, the report concludes that the talks haven’t progressed very far, and Twitter’s executives are keen to keep the company independent from the other tech giants.

Activision shelves Guitar Hero due to poor consumer interest

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 03:56 AM PST

Guitar Hero axed ahead of 2011 release

Activision has announced it is to bring the curtain down on its Guitar Hero franchise with the scheduled 2011 release shelved due to a reported lack of consumer demand.

Once a massive hit, Guitar Hero and the music gaming genre has waned in recent times with new, original direction lacking from title updates and failing to grab gamers’ interests.

Having dominated the genre for Xbox, PS3 and Wii, Activision transported the franchise to portable gaming devices with the Nintendo DS, iPad and smartphones all on the receiving end of music-making rock fun. The fate of the DJ Hero franchise has yet to be announced.

Unveiling the firm’s Q4 2010 earnings yesterday, Activision Publishing’s CEO Eric Hirshberg announced: “After two years of steeply declining sales, we've made the decision to close our Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on our previously playing Guitar Hero title for 2011.”

Expanding on the decision Hirshberg added: “We intend to devote our time and resource to the areas, where we have true competitive advantages and the potential to make gaming experiences that are best-in-class. Our product line-up will be more focused, should be more profitable and will provide deeper online experiences than ever before.”

Despite posting an overall lose for 2010 Activision developed some of the highest grossing gaming releases of the year with World of Warcraft and the latest edition to the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops repeatedly topping charts in their respective markets.

Whilst Guitar Hero gets laid to rest, rival Rock Band has revealed it is to launch a Valentine’s themed downloadable content pack allowing users to woo their special someone by rocking out to a variety of classic love ballads.

Will you be singing an ode of farewell to Guitar Hero or are you non-plused by the franchises demise? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

INQ Android tablet launch confirmed

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 03:17 AM PST

INQ CEO reveals that an iPad rival is on the cards

The INQ Facebook phone could soon be joined by an Android tablet, after INQ CEO Frank Meehan confirmed that a slate was "definitely" on the cards.

Speaking to Electricpig prior to the launch of the INQ Cloud Touch (Facebook phone), Meehan when questioned on whether the British-based company has thought about producing an Android tablet responded, “We have, definitely.”

Meehan added, “We’re very closely monitoring the whole pad situation…we’re seeing some nice designs coming out…once the overall experience for the customer is closer to the iPad, then is the time to move, otherwise you’ve just got a second rate iPad.”

It seems a release date in the very near future looks unlikely, as Meehan shared his thoughts on the Android tablets currently available on the market saying, “The customer isn’t having a great experience at the moment.”

Meehan was not a big fan of the Samsung Galaxy Tab either saying, “The 7-inch thing didn’t really go for me.”

While he believed that Honeycomb 3.0 would go some way to improving the performance of Google-powered tablets, he believes the problem lies elsewhere, “Really the problem is the store itself and the marketplace…customers are not buying enough stuff from the Android Market.”

So, we've got the INQ Cloud Touch, but would you be more excited by the prospect of an INQ Android tablet? Share your thoughts with T3 on Facebook and Twitter.

Will Carling's iPad recovered thanks to Mobile Me

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 03:10 AM PST

Former England rugby captain Will Carling went on a manhunt (or rather, an iPad-hunt) yesterday after he left his beloved tablet on the train.

Realising he'd left the machine on the train, he used his MobileMe tracker to trace its location. The first point of call according to the tracker was a block of flats in Woking. “Managed to get in & knock on all 18 doors! No answer surprisingly. So left notes,” explained Carling via Twitter.

The iPad then moved to a local train station after Will informed the new owner he was tracking the device. “Breaking news! iPad is 'heading' towards the local Police Station. Feel like a real spy...”

Within an hour and half of first tracking the device Will was reunited with his unharmed iPad. “Tracked it all on Mobile me - weird / awesome...”

Android INQ phone adds Facebook friendly UI

INQ has officially unveiled two new Facebook-centric Android phones as the INQ Cloud Touch and INQ Cloud Q land ending much speculation around the social network themed handsets.

- Click here for hands-on photos of the INQ Cloud Touch

Announcing “Facebook is the core of this product,” INQ have revealed that the Android 2.2 run Cloud Touch will sport a bespoke homescreen overlay that offers a Visual Media Feed for the latest update to a user’s Facebook newsfeed with pictures, videos and web links all on the receiving end of the sleek UI treatment.

Set to land in the UK via The Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy this April, the INQ Cloud Touch will sport a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen display, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 600MHz Qualcomm processor. Available in three colours from launch, red, white and black, the Cloud Touch will also feature with usual array of Wi-Fi and MicroUSB connectivity options as well as a somewhat disappointing 4GB of internal memory.

Aside from the handset’s Facebook friendly credentials, a trait that will no doubt appeal to Facebook addicted teenagers, the Cloud Touch will feature Spotify as the default music player allowing users to sync their playlists or signup and make use of a seemingly endless offering of tunes on the move.

Do the Facebook themed credentials of the new INQ handsets appeal to you or are they simply the latest in a long line of gimmicks set to fall by the wayside as soon as the Facebook craze passes? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple TV gaming coming with iOS 4.3?

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Is Apple about to take on Xbox Live and OnLive at their own game?

iOS 4.3 was supposed to only add hotspot skills to the iPhone and bring app subscriptions up-to-date for new newly-launched Daily. Handy, but not life-changing. But now new evidence suggests the next iOS update could bring something truly killer to the party: online gaming for Apple TV.

Hardcore Apple fans have been trawling iOS 4.3’s code and have turfed up references at ATVGames and ATVThunder, the latter believed to refer to a dedicated controller. The tipster who’s found the info says there’ll be leaderboards and game scheduling too. Essentially, we’re looking at Game Center on Apple TV.

The idea is said to be similar to OnLive, the cloud gaming service which has taken all before it in the States since its launch last summer. The move makes perfect sense for Apple seeing as it’s stitched up mobile gaming with the App Store and could offer a similar experience on its set top box.

All will be revealed soon, with iOS 4.3 rumoured for release on Monday 14 February. Is Apple getting into gaming a smart move? Or will it struggle to beat the big boys? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Nokia N9 killed off ahead of launch?

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 02:01 AM PST

New phone had been expected to be revealed at next week's Mobile World Congress.

The Nokia N9 has had tongues wagging for months, following the leak of a stunning spy shot and some truly stellar specs slipping onto the web. But now insiders are saying the phone will never be released, with next week’s rumoured MWC unveiling not happening.

Reuters reports that two, “…industry sources close to the company,” have said development of the phone has stopped. Nokia has refused to comment, but it clearly throws the while future of MeeGo into jeopardy.

Just yesterday, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop picked out MeeGo as a weak link in his incredible assessment of Nokia’s current position. “We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market.”

Elop has already mooted the idea of, “…joining another ecosystem,” meaning MeeGo’s days are already numbered. Word is Nokia is set to team up with Microsoft and release a Windows Phone 7 smartphone. Could it be that the N9 is a casualty of this tech tie-up?

Be sure to tell us what you think of this story on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

HP Veer: pint-sized webOS phone outed

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 12:28 AM PST

Xperia X10 Mini-rival takes small smartphones to the next level.

HP has played a blinder with its all new webOS-packing Veer smartphone. While the trend towards small-time smartphones generally means sacrificing specs and skills for size, this new effort looks like it could finally be the phone to stop us buying big.

Rocking a tiny 2.57-inch screen and measuring just 54.5x84x15.1mm, the Veer comes with a slide-out keyboard down the bottom, just like its Pre predecessors. It packs the same webOS 2.2 as the new Pre 3, as well as Flash 10.1, GPS, Wi-Fi and a snappy 800MHz Qualcomm chip.

All texts, IMs and picture messages from one contact are combined into a single view. HP Synergy will also deliver Yahoo mail, Exchange, Facebook and LinkedIn messages after just one sign in. The Veer also works as a mobile hotspot, while initial reports suggest multitasking works like a dream on the small-time device.

8GB of storage, n standard Wi-Fi, a 5MP camera and Bluetooth 2.1 complete the picture. Again, the only issue with this new HP device is the lack of release date or price, with both being revealed in due course.

What do you make of this little number? Is the Veer enough to stop you wanting a capacious smartphone? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

HP Pre 3 unleashed

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 12:10 AM PST

Stunning specs, but is the Pre 3 any better than its predecessors.

HP’s Touchpad might have grabbed the headlines, but the Pre 3 is central to the PC giant’s hopes of kicking it big in the smartphone space. Again, HP has decided to kiss goodbye to the Palm name, but the Pre 3 comes with enough killer specs to get us all het up.

The screen now sits at 3.6-inches, with 800x480 resolution. What really makes the Pre 3 tick though is the 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor inside. Ok, it’s not dual-core, but this is a marked improvement on the Pre 2’s 1GHz effort.

Elsewhere you’ll find a 5 megapixel camera, with 720p HD video, with mobile hotspot smarts for sharing out your 3G connection with your pals. Storage runs to 8GB or 16GB depending on which model you pick up, while Wi-Fi, HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.1 and that famed slide-out portrait keyboard come as standard.

You can use the Pre 3 in conjunction with the newly-minted Touchpad thanks to Touchstone tech. Sharing web addresses and even answering the Pre 3’s calls via the tablet are what make this a sleek, if a tad gimmicky, addition.

webOS 2.2 comes as standard and if you want the latest version of the OS, this phone’s for you. Palm has said original Pres and Pixis won’t be getting an update. HP is once again being vague about those all important price and release details, saying all will be revealed in summer. Just don’t hang on too long guys.

Let us know what you think of the new HP Pre 3 over on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

HP Touchpad webOS tablet revealed

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 11:48 PM PST

New slate rocks amazing new features that are bound to have Apple and Android worried.

The HP TouchPad has finally got the official nod, with the computer giant ditching the Palm name completely for the first ever webOS-packing tablet. But although the Palm moniker might be history, webOS’s best features have been coupled with a truly stellar piece of kit.

The TouchPad touts an iPad-matching 9.7-inch, 1024x768 screen, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.4GHz processor, which means this thing is lightning quick. It needs to be seeing as it has webOS’s full multitasking smarts, with Cards and Stacks, as well as being a ‘true visualisation of your workspace’. Marketing flimflam aside, it really is designed to be the most worker-friendly tablet ever. Take that BlackBerry.

HP Synergy is on board so you can aggregate emails, social network witterings, instant messages, contacts and calendars, giving you a one stop shop for all your important info.

There’s a virtual keyboard for firing off emails and IMs, as well as a 1.3MP front-facing camera, allowing you to make video calls. Bluetooth, n standard Wi-Fi, GPS, Flash 10.1, Beats Audio and 3G are all on board.

Best of all, HP has loaded up Touchstone charging tech, so you can juice the TouchPad up without plugging it in. Even better, you can use the same touch tech to share web addresses with webOS phones.

Sadly, HP is being very vague on price and release, only saying the TouchPad is coming this summer, with details to be released “at a later date”. Here’s hoping this won’t be a repeat of the original Palm Pre fiasco.

What do you think of the TouchPad? Can it rival the iPad? Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.
