Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Apple iPad 2 details are running rife across tech blogs and forums following yesterdays March 2nd announcement confirmation. Today saw iPad 2 photographs leak, well, at least and iPad 2 replica as well as official iPad 2 branding begin to decorate the launch venue, teasing features of the second-generation tablet.

iPad tablet rivals are having a hard time overcoming the influx of iPad 2 news but HTC and Motorola have both given it their best shots today. Whilst HTC released the first official video of the HTC Flyer tablet, Motorola revealed that Oscar nominees and hosts would be receiving a gold Motorola Xoom tablet in their goodie bags. Nice.

CEO tech giants are traditionally a fusty bunch but two of the biggest player Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg have both been making headlines of their own accord today. Whilst Apple has been criticised for failing to reveal Steve Jobs' successor plans, Facebook founder Zuckerberg has appeared in his own comic chronicling his life and times on the way to social networking god.

Pocket Hipster app slates your music, recommends better

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 09:29 AM PST

If you can stomach the hipsters, you may discover some new super-cool artists.

The term 'Hipster' has become a dirty word in recent times, and with good reason. They're always lurking around smoking roll-ups in funky hats, obnoxious spectacles and stupid shoes, keen to let you know just how rubbish everything you like is.

So why would you want one on your iPhone, criticising your musical selections? Well a new app for the Apple smartphone does just that, in the most insulting fashion possible.

The Pocket Hipster app actively slaughters your musical selections and tries to guide you to a better aural experience; usually a rubbish indie band with wispy beards. It's certainly a new spin on 'You like this, so you'll probably like this too' radio apps like Pandora.

The Hipster app features one male and one female Hipser who will comment on your selection with remarks like: "If your taste in music was an animal, it would be a one-winged pigeon with a gammy leg."

The 59p app will then serve up links to alternate options, through streams and iTunes buy links. Unfortunately there's no Talking Tom Cat-style option to give the hipsters a good slap for their troubles next time they call you out on listening to Bon Jovi.

What next? Hipsters criticising your gallery shots and recommending retro polaroid camera apps?

Apple refuses to reveal Steve Jobs replacement plans

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 08:25 AM PST

Steve Jobs' succssion plans remain a mystery

Apple has refused to reveal plans for implementing Steve Jobs’ successor after the company’s future following the CEO’s latest medical leave of absence was called into question at its annual shareholder meeting yesterday.

A proposal made by the Central Laborers’ Fund attempted to force the Cupertino tech giant into revealing its succession plans in the event Steve Jobs is unable to return to his post as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Jobs, who failed to attend yesterday’s shareholder meeting, is currently on his third medical leave of absence from the firm since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2004.

Jennifer O’Dell who made the proposal on behalf of the Illinois based Central Lanorers’ Fund, a company that represents 500,000 construction workers across the US and Canada and holds nearly 11,500 Apple shares, spoke of her distaste at Apple refusing to unveil its successor plans. She said: "We want Steve Jobs to come back to work yesterday. We want him to be here every day. We want him to live forever.”

She went on to add: "That is not realistic and that is why they need to have a plan. And if they have a plan, and I am sure they do, what is wrong with a little transparency?" It was reported last week that Steve Jobs has just six weeks left to live after he was spotted leaving a cancer specialist in California.

Apple is reported to have fought the proposal, which was filed last year, months ahead of Jobs latest leave, stating that revealing such plans would give competitors an “unfair advantage.” Jobs who is more a talisman to the company than just a leader is being replaced in his absence by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook. Cook, a likely candidate to replace Jobs on a more permanent basis took the reigns from the Apple founder back in 2009 following the CEO’s liver transplant.

Whilst many shareholders are urging Apple to reveal more distinct plans for Steve Jobs prolonged absence, a number of investors have backed the company’s secretive nature. Pam Pallakoff, an Apple shareholder for 20 years reportedly told the BBC: "I feel making such a plan public is unnecessary."

"We feel the management in place is very good management and they will make the right decisions at the time they need to."

The call to arms came on the same day that Apple officially announced its second-generation tablet, the Apple iPad 2 would be formally unveiled next week on March 2nd.

Should Apple reveal its plans to replace Steve Jobs or is it right to keep its intentions secret? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

HTC Flyer teased following MWC 2011 unveiling

HTC has released the first promotional video for its recently announced and yet undated Android powered tablet, the HTC Flyer.

Officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2011 last week, HTC’s first foray into the tablet market surprised many with its lack of Android 3.0, Honeycomb, no dual-core processor and the inclusion of a touch-sensitive stylus.

Crafted from a single piece of aluminum with white accents, the Flyer is a good looking device with the user experience enhanced via the inclusion of HTC’s trademark Sense UI. Taking on a 7-inch form factor the Flyer touts a 1024 x 600p display, a 1.5GHz processor and will launch featuring front and rear mounted cameras. UK launch dates and pricing have yet to be announced.

Offering a peak at the Flyer in action, HTC’s brief promo video (below) proclaims the Android 2.4, Gingerbread, device as: “A tablet for the whole family,” further adding: “Everyone can make it their own.”

Can the HTC Flyer challenge the likes of Apple’s iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab in the tablet market? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple prep online store ahead of new MacBook Pro unveiling

Apple has closed the virtual doors to its online store hinting towards the imminent official unveiling of the newly updated range of MacBook Pro computers.

Touting the now familiar yellow Post-It note and declaration “We’ll be back soon. We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly,” the Apple online store has been taken down globally suggesting the arrival of a new product.

A telltale sign of a new product arrival, the downing of the Apple online store all but confirms the recent spate of rumours that suggested today, coincidentally Apple CEO Steve Job’s birthday, would see the arrival of the latest MacBook Pro updates.

Earlier today and pre-empting the expected official announcement, full specs for the claimed MacBook Pro updates were leaked online with the 13-inch model reported to be on the receiving end of a hefty overhaul. Packing Intel’s Light Peak, Thunderbolt technology the new Mac model will also tout 4GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD, Intel HD graphics and a Core i5 processor.

A HD FaceTime compatible camera, 13.3-inch 1200 x 800p display, two USB ports, a Firewire connector and SDXC slot complete the device’s list of features.

Will the newly revamped range of MacBook Pros be a sufficient step ahead of previous models or a minor improvement? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sony NEX-3 camera killed off

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 03:01 AM PST

Move seen as way of consolidating top-end NEX-5.

The Sony NEX-3 was much-loved here at T3 Towers when we first saw it last summer. But the entry-level interchangeable lens compact has been given the chop by the Big S, with punters favouring the sleeker, 1080p-packing NEX-5 instead.

Sony’s Japanese site says the camera isn’t being produced any more, but the range of NEX cameras is set to continue, with the NEX-5 and NEX-VG10 camcorder. That at least means NEX-3 owners will still be able to get hold of the E-mount lenses they need.

Sony was keen to trail the NEX-3 and NEX-5 as groundbreaking snappers, loading them up with a 3D update and trailing them as their Olympus PEN competitors.

Have you got a NEX-3? Were you planning on getting one? Tell us now on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Mark Zuckerberg the Comic retells Facebook story

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 02:51 AM PST

The Social Network the graphic novel?

Facebook creator and young zillionaire of the decade Mark Zuckerberg has cropped up in a few different mediums over the last couple of years. First there was a book, then a film – the hugely successful The Social Network. Now he’s set of the kind of stardom normally reserved for super heroes, as Mark ZuckerBerg the comic book goes on sale via Bluewater publications.

The 48-page comic, Written by Jerome Maida and illustrated by Sal Field, tells the story of Facebook’s conception in animated frames. "Rightly or wrongly, Mark dealt harshly with some people on his way to where he is today. …He left many people feeling betrayed. I try my best to be fair here. No one is totally innocent in this story. I try to represent each of the major players' [points] of view,” said Maida.

The book isn’t officially sanctioned by Facebook, nor does it have anything to do with the company, which simply states: "We've said all we're going to say about the movie and the books. We've moved on from this discussion, and we think others have, too.”

With both the original novel and the Hollywood movie painting the social networking king as callous and cruel, we’re not surprised that Zuckerberg is keen to brush off this latest retelling, too.

Will you pick up the $6.99 (£4.31) comic adaptation of Facebook’s origin? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed. We’ll leave the jokes about the lack of animation in Zuckerberg’s real life appearances to you...

Google Android activations caught on video

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 02:05 AM PST

Geeky video proves that Android really is slaying all before it.

Still not convinced that Android has won the battle for smartphone supremacy? Then you need to take a peep at the clip below. This super geeky video, produced by Android developers, shows the number of activations from October 2008 until January 2011.

The global graphs begin to spike slowly with the release of the T-Mobile G1, before going into overdrive with the release of the Motorola Droid and then the Samsung Galaxy S. What starts out as a UK and US coastal phenomenon quickly goes global.

With Google claiming over 350,000 Android phones are activated daily, it’s hard to argue that it hasn’t already seen off all comers. This video definitely proves that the Big G has been bossing it for some time now.

The Daily iPad newspaper heading to Android this spring

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 01:16 AM PST

Murdoch plots move as Android tablets ramp up against iPad.

The Daily iPad newspaper was always going to make the move to Android. News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch even said so at the virtual paper’s New York launch. But according to insiders, an Android edition will launch in the second quarter of this year, flying in the face of Murdoch’s claims that, “…this year and next year will belong to iPad.”

All Things D’s Peter Kafka, a man known for getting the inside scoop, says “a source” has told him the Android launch will happen this Spring.

With Apple having been an integral part of the paper’s development, even developing its new subscription service for it, it’s surprising Murdoch is willing to make the shift away from the iPad so soon. But with a raft of excellent new Android tabs just around the corner, it does make sense to be sitting pretty on them from the word go.

Would you subscribe to The Daily on an Android tablet? Tell us what you think of this latest move on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iPad 2 design: new mock-ups revealed

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 11:52 PM PST

Thinner, flatter looking iPad 2 mock-ups unveiled.

Can’t wait until 2 March to see just what the iPad 2 will look like? Then these pics are just for you. A Japanese blog which says it has close ties to the Shenzhen parts makers behind the iPad 2, has mocked up these designs and reckons they’re pretty much what we can expect to see from Apple next week.

As you can see, the iPad 2 appears a tad smaller than the current model, with a flatter back. More detailed snaps show it’s substantially thinner too, with a front-facing camera for FaceTime action.

There also appears to be a rear-facing peeper too, tying in with Apple’s plans to bring cameras to all of its iOS devices.

Are these mock-ups spot on? All will be revealed in San Francisco on 2 March? In the meantime, head to our Facebook and Twitter pages and let us know what you think of these iPad 2 designs.

New MacBook Pro specs leaked

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 11:35 PM PST

"Apple Thunderbolt" and Intel-backed graphics lined up for new MacBook Pro.

The new MacBook Pro is set to get official today. But ahead of Apple’s announcement, the specs of the base 13-inch model have hit the web for all to see. And it looks like this refresh is going to pack a serious punch.

Leading the line is Intel’s Light Peak tech, rebranded as Thunderbolt according to the leaked MacBook Pro packaging from which the details are taken. A spy shot of the side of the machine clearly shows a dedicated port for the new, super-speedy transfer tech.

And there’s plenty else to get het up about. The base MacBook Pro comes with an ample 4GB RAM, a massive 320GB HDD, 13.3-inch 1200x800 panel, FaceTime HD camera (the name iSight seems to have been killed off), a SDXC slot, 2x USB and Firewire.

Intel HD graphics and a Core i5 processor complete the set. It seems chatter about NVIDIA’s dedicated graphics being given the boot is bang on the money.

We’ll be bringing you the official announcement of Apple’s new MacBook Pro family later today, so stay tuned here and to our Twitter and Facebook pages for more details.
