News@8pm: LG Optimus 3D and Pad, PS Phone

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

LG officially unveiled their two MWC contenders: the LG Optimus Pad tablet and the LG Optimus 3D smartphone. Both record 3D video with a dual camera set-up, and the Optimus 3D (that's the phone) even offers up a Nintendo 3DS-esque glasses-free 3D display.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (née "PlayStation Phone") also got its official unveiling, along with a release date of March this year. After months spent clattering round and round in the internet rumour mill, nothing shocking was revealed about the device, except - just perhaps - that it's slightly underpowered compared to other mobiles on show.

Also on display by Sony were its two latest non-gaming phones, the Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro. Almost identical except for the Pro's sliding keypad, they boast 8MP cameras and the same performance specs as the Play (but without the gaming to gobble it all up, presumably).

Not to be outdone, Acer has announced it's latest handset: the Iconia Smart. It's a 4.8-inch monster of a phone, flaunting that same curved-to-your-face design touted by the Google Nexus S, but with a screen that's taking it dangerously close to tablet territory. And, speaking of, they've gone and done an Iconia tablet as well, the little tinkers.

On the subject of tablets, we've also seen the Motorola Xoom's release date outed as some time in Q2 this year. We had a play with what Motorola modestly describe as "not the next generation of tablet, but the one after that" at CES this year and liked it - but with a rumoured asking price of £720 are we really to believe it is £300 better than an iPad?

We've also got wind of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 specs, and would you believe it's faster, bigger and more powerful than the last one. We've also got an exclusive hands-on video and a gallery of Galaxy Tab 2 pictures of the device straight from Barcelona, should your interest need further stoking.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play pictures: PSP Phone hands-on

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 10:37 AM PST

Hands-on pictures and verdict of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

Following years of speculation and months of tantalising leaks the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, PSP Phone, has been officially unveiled ahead of a March release.

Whilst sneaked and leaked hands-on pictures with the Xperia Play have been doing the rounds online for some weeks now, T3 got some one-to-one time with the official launch device yesterday, putting the handset’s smartphone and gaming credentials to the test.

- Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Pictures: Full hands-on gallery here

Set to run Google’s Android 2.3 mobile operating system, Gingerbread, the Xperia Play is proclaimed to tout 60fps HD gaming although after a first play, featuring a repeated number of dropped frames, this is something we will need further persuasion on. Having sampled FIFA 11, Tetris, Asphalt and the Bruce Lee fighting sim we are of mixed opinion on the device’s gaming credentials.

Where the Xperia Play will undoubtedly reign supreme over game touting touchscreen smartphones, however, is through the inclusion of physical analogue controls. Taking away the fiddly controls that have to date held the mobile gaming market back the Sony Ericsson offering presents a very user friendly experience that is sure to create a more immersive gamer experience on the move.

Ensuring the formerly dubbed PSP Phone fulfils its smartphone branding the Xperia Play will come sporting an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of HD video recording and the full array of Android character traits.

Now that it is official does the Xperia Play match up to the long awaited expectation? Let us know what you think of the Sony Ericsson device via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

LG Optimus Me coming to Orange in the UK

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 08:55 AM PST

Budget LG Optimus smartphone coming later this month to UK.

After all the fuss over the LG Optimus 3D and equally exciting Optimus Pad, you'd be forgiven for letting the Optimus Me - a smaller, budget-ier smartphone for those unfussed with all that 3D hoo-ha - slide under the radar.

True, there's nothing outstanding about the Me - it's got a dinky 2.8-inch, 320x480 touchscreen, a paltry 600MHz processor and a mere 3MP of snapping power - but all these shortcomings come at a price, and a very reasonable one at that. So reasonable, in fact, that Orange are bringing it to the UK as a PAYG option for customers uninterested in being locked into two-year contracts to land themselves the all-singing, all-dancing big brother Optimus 3D.

Interested parties don't have long to wait to snag themselves an Optimus Me, which will be out on Orange in the UK by the end of February, with a handset price still to be announced.

Orange launches gesture shortcut app for Android

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 08:15 AM PST

Live wallpapers and custom gestures come to Orange Android handsets.

Who says the it's just the manufacturers who get to have all the fun at Mobile World Congress? Network provider Orange has got in on the act this year with a neat, innovative way of launching apps for its range of Android smartphones.

Orange Gestures lets users draw up to 27 different symbols on the homescreen to open applications from the menu, without the need to clogg-up the homescreen with all manner of icons and widgets.

The app, announced by Orange at MWC in Barcelona today, lets users assign different gestures to different actions on the phone, so for example if you draw square it might open your alarm clock, or a circle might open your internet browser.

Orange also announced six interactive live wallpapers, including a candle that flickers when you move the touchscreen from side to side. A nice touch that adds a little flavour to your infinitely customisable Android phone.

Gestures will be available on Orange's leading Android smartphones from Q2 this year, but if you're rocking a HTC handset you'll be left wanting as the Taiwanese giant has opted out, perhaps worried that it might overshadow HTC Sense a little bit.

It won't be an app downloadable from the Android Market, but will be pre-loaded on Orange Android handsets.

Video shows Kinect and Windows Phone 7 integration

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 08:00 AM PST

Microsoft flirt with Windows Phone 7 Kinect control.

Remember those videos from before Kinect came out of those beautiful, incongruously happy people grinning like loons and high-fiving each other as they bounced virtual balls around their TV screens and giggled to each other at the magic of it all? Well, Microsoft are sticking to that PR formula for their latest bit of Kinect-based wizardry, this time showing what appears to be one hapless male Kinect player trying to fight off overwhelming number of bouncy balls being directed at him by two friends.

Same old, same old, you might think. But the novelty is that the friends in question are controlling the flow of balls using nowt but their Windows Phone 7 smartphones. Gimmick or the first step in a smartphone/gaming merger? Take a look at the video below and let us know what you think via e-mail or on the T3 Twitter feed.

Motorola Droid Pro coming to European shores

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 07:36 AM PST

Motorola's Berry-a-like to arrive on European shores.

The Droid Pro has been out in the States since November 2010, but the embargo is to be lifted at an unspecified point in the near future for those European business users for whom the humble BlackBerry is too pedestrian. The Droid Pro packs a physical keyboard, 1GHz processor, 2GB of memory and Android 2.2 FroYo, as well as that business community must-have: the 3G mobile hotspot for up to five devices for strategising and synergising on the go.

Media features are, as you might expect, a little stripped back, with a modest 3.1-inch screen and a humble 5MP camera (with dual-LED flash). However, fittingly it comes with all manner of business related wizardry including pre-installed QuickOffice, a selection of e-mail software and security features such as remote wipe and what Motorola call "complex password support". But will that be enough to tempt Berry users away from their signature smartphones? Only serious Android aficionados, we reckon.

Acer Iconia Smart unveiled at MWC Barcelona

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 04:57 AM PST

Acer leapfrogs other mobile manufacturers in size - but how big is too big?

We at T3 Towers have been keeping a close eye on the tablet-ification of the smartphone, as screen sizes on handsets like the HTC Desire HD and MWC debutante the Samsung Galaxy S2 creep north of the four inch mark to 4.3 and beyond. Their small step, however, is Acer's massive leap as it ushers in its latest behemoth of a smartphone: the Acer Iconia Smart.

The Iconia Smart physically towers over the competition (well it would, if you stood it on end), measuring in at a Leviathan 4.8 inches - a mere 2.2 inches smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Tab. It would also leave them in the shade, as the handset itself is boasts the same slightly dubious fits-your-face-better curves last seen sexing up the Google Nexus S.

Leaving the realm of pained metaphor behind, the Iconia looks top notch all round: an 8MP camera with LED flash, a front-facing 2MP video call camera, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and the pairing of an accelerometer and gyroscope for full PlayStation-style Sixaxis gaming control. The aformentioned windscreen of a display packs 1024x480 pixels in to boot - but while big displays might get the media-addicted smartphone users of the world salivating, 4.8 inches makes for a seriously hefty device - you certainly wouldn't call it svelte. Whether that's a dealbreaker or not will have to wait for our first review, but for now, colour us intrigued.

Motorola Xoom UK release date: Q2 2011

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 04:07 AM PST

Moto's award winning tab coming to the UK - but what of that hefty price tag rumour?

Motorola's foray into the tablet realm - the Motorola Xoom - is to wing its way into the hands of UK gadget lovers in just a couple of months, according to those in the know at Moto.

The Xoom, which was, according to Motorola, "designed with the consumer in mind" (well, it helps), boasts a 1GHz processor, a 10.1-inch display and Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and picked up a favourable review from us at this year's CES. However, the tablet raised eyebrows when a launch price of a Croesus-worthy £720 was banded about - a near three hundred quid dearer than Apple's comparatively thrifty iPad.

Bang for your not-insubstantial buck also includes an accelerometer, 5MP camera, 2MP front-facing camera, HDMI out, and full HD playback. And a barometer - which at that price, should almost go without saying.

Nothing more specific than Q2 2011 has been pinned down by Motorola as yet, but we'd be hoping for some serious Galaxy Tab-style price cuts on release if Motorola is to have any chance of luring customers away from the LG Optimus Pad, the BlackBerry PlayBook, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 or the next generation of iPad.

Samsung Galaxy S2 pictures: Hands-on at MWC 2011

Dual-core processor touting Samsung handset launches and we go hands-on

Officially unveiled during the company’s Mobile World Congress opening conference yesterday, the Samsung Galaxy S2 has touched down with a bevy of exciting talking points.

Following the device’s journey into the realms of reality T3 went hands-on with the second-generation Galaxy S smartphone that is looking to not only emulate the success of its predecessor but trump the emerging breed of dual-core powered pocket blowers.

- Samsung Galaxy S2 pictures: Click here for the full gallery

The first thing we noticed when getting our mitts on the Galaxy S 2 was just how lightweight the handset really is. Whilst its ultra thin form factor sees it pleasing on the aesthetics front, the device’s staggeringly low 116 gram weight, although somewhat disconcerting in the hand at first, is a joy and will no doubt appease many end users.

An area of the new Galaxy handset being heavily pushed by its crafters is the inclusion of four new ‘Hubs’ which allow users comprehensive and catalogued access to certain entertainment areas of their devices. Although the ‘Readers Hub’ and ‘Music Hub’ are shockingly reminiscent of Apple’s iBooks and iPod UI’s respectively, the ‘Social Hub’ and ‘Game Hub’ are sure to increase user interactivity.

Samsung’s TouchWiz 4.0 UI is a pleasant addition to the Galaxy S 2 offering a smooth and friendly interface with the dual-core handset’s party piece, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, simply a pleasure to behold on every front.

Has the Samsung Galaxy S 2 met the expectations set by its predecessor or falling short of the range’s short heritage? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 pictures: Hands-on at MWC

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 03:19 AM PST

Hands-on with the Vodafone exclusive Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, complete with 10.1 inch screen and dual core processor. Is it enough to trouble the iPad?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 might have been made to look like an afterthought during the company’s Mobile World Congress opening press conference but with a strong OS, friendly form factor and a hefty specs sheet the second-generation Samsung tablet is a potential show stealer.

T3 got hands-on with the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, with its 10.1inch, screeen at the Samsung press conference to bring you the full round-up of its weighty bag of tricks.

- Click here for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 pictures

Excelling where its predecessor arguably struggled, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 features a beautifully crafted, light weight body that fits comfortably within the hands and weighs noticeably less than its bitter Apple-branded rival.

Touting a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800p display, the second-generation Galaxy Tab offers up crisp on-screen content further enhanced by the 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera capable of Full HD 1080p video recording and a second, 2-megapixel, forward-facing video calling-friendly snapper. Navigation through the device’s content pool is fast and user friendly thanks to the combination of a 1GHz dual-core processor and Google’s upcoming tablet-centric Android 3.0 operating system, Honeycomb.

First impressions of the Galaxy Tab 2 are wholly positive. Combating the aesthetic drawbacks of the original Galaxy Tab the 2 is a visually and mechanically attractive device that, thanks to its larger size and higher-end specs, will be one of the first true iPad competitors, assuming Samsung can get its pricing right.

LG officially unveils Optimus Pad Android tablet

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 02:47 AM PST

LG's stab at the tablet market gets its grand unveiling in Barcelona.

Looks like round two of the tablet war is getting underway, and LG's plucky Optimus Pad is first in the ring.

Sitting comfortably between the iPad's 9.7-inch and the Galaxy Tab's 7-inch screen, the Optimus Tab measures in at 8.9 inches, which LG reckon is big enough to browse and watch movies on, while still being comfortable enough to use one-handed.

While the Optimus 3D phone uses similar glasses-free 3D tech to the Nintendo 3DS, its older tablet brother will require special glasses to be viewed in 3D. However, the Optimus Pad does boast the phone's 3D video recording, as well as full HD playback for videos.

Under the hood, the Optimus Pad runs Android 3.0 Gingerbread - the latest iteration of the Google OS, designed especially with tablets in mind. It also boasts a dual-core 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 processor to better cope with all that 3D rendering and gaming LG hopes you'll be getting up to.

The Optimus Pad is scheduled to start shipping in March, getting a headstart on the two future heavyweight tablets lurking on the sidelines, the BlackBerry PlayBook and the Apple iPad 2. We reckon it could be a contender, Charlie.

Sony Ericsson announces Xperia Neo and Pro

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 11:44 PM PST

Sony Ericsson's non-gaming smartphones unveiled at MWC.

In the wake of the not-so-secret Xperia Play (aka, the PlayStation Phone), Sony have also announced the latest non-gaming additions to their smartphone range, the Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro.

The Neo packs an 8MP camera (and the now-compulsory front-facing camera for video calls), a four-inch, 854x480 pixel display (as on the Xperia Play), a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, HD video recording and the Sony Bravia mobile engine. It will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The also-announced Xperia Pro is identical in ever way to the Neo but with a sliding keyboard (and corresponding heftier build). Both handsets will be available from April in three colours: the Neo in blue, red and silver; the Pro in black, red and silver.
