News@8pm: HTC handsets, Xperia Play release date

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

We've seen a slew of unveilings from HTC today at MWC, with the HTC Flyer tablet, the HTC Desire S, the Wildfire S, the Facebook-focused ChaCha and Salsa and the Incredible S all looming heavy on the horizon. And HTC fans don't have long to wile away, either, with all products getting the staple MWC Q2, 2011 release window. Pop over to the T3.com MWC 2011 microsite for your fill of hands-on videos and photos.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We also got up close and personal with LG's Optimus Pad, which sits size-wise in the hitherto unexplored niche between the Galaxy Tab's 7-inch and the iPad's 9.7-inch displays, measuring in at what LG call a "perfectly balanced" 8.7 inches, like the three bears, only with tablets. Take a tour through our LG Optimus Pad photos for a look-see.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (aka PlayStation Phone) got its price and release date leaked by gun-jumping mobile peddlars unlocked-mobiles.com, who report that the PSP Go-a-like will be drawing looks of disapproval from stoney-faced commuters as early as March 7th. We've heard nary a word on contract deals for the Xperia Play, but a SIM free version will set you back £549.98, if you pre-order it now.

After a disappointing stab at undercutting Apple's iPad on price with the short-lived Folio 100, Toshiba are back with promises of a "premium specification" Toshiba tablet for the UK in the near future. Squeezed in amongst the standard tablet features they've found room for what they call "Adaptive Display Technology", which uses sensors to judge background light and sound levels and adjusts video playback to suit.

Away from the lights of MWC and we've heard whisper of the iPhone 5 receiving a larger, 4-inch screen, in the same vein as those cropping up on, well, basically everything we've seen in Barcelona. Sound decision or baseless speculation; we are loathe to ignore the rumblings of the Apple rumour mill.

T3 now on Apple app subs service launched today

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 11:39 AM PST

T3 iPad Edition now available via Apple subscription service

Apple subscriptions launched today and T3 readers will be among the first in the world to be able to use the new service from iTunes by subsribing to the T3 iPad app.

Apple has now enabled the in-app subscriptions service for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The change means it’s now possible for anyone with content-based apps – magazines, newspapers, video and music – to give users the opportunity to sign up to a continued service using the App Store’s usual billing process.

Publishers can choose the frequency of the subscription from a choice of weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly, and when bought the user will be charged at that frequency.

The news ties in with the launch of the iPad’s first subscription-based app, ‘The Daily’ newspaper, and readers of T3’s iPad Edition can now benefit as well.

Apple's simple subs philosophy

Apple’s currently-ill CEO Steve Jobs said of the new service: “Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing.

"All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app. We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone.”

This change means that subscribing to the T3 iPad Edition just got a whole lot easier. Just set up your preferences in iTunes, sit back and relax!

Panasonic introduces its first LED LCD 3D TV

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 09:00 AM PST

Enhanced web TV content and improved picture quality

Panasonic held its convention in London today, expanding its LED and Plasma range with both 2D and 3D capability.

Comprising of 37 and 32 inch panels, the DT30 is the flagship 3D LED LCD range and includes the new IPS Alpha panel. Advantages of this panel include a fast response time and wide viewing angles, while 400 HZ backlight scanning for improved motion in 3D and 3D. This set includes an industry fastest scanning range of 2ms, reduced crosstalk and improved black reproduction.

Panasonic also showed its flagship plasma range the VT30, first introduced at CES this 3D set is billed by a Panasonic spokesman as ‘the best TV we’ve ever built.’ Panasonic televisions have arguably never been as stylish and LG or Samsung rivals, but the company looks to change this with its High Line Design, her construction from a single piece of glass enables a wafer thin design.

Available in 65, 55, 50 and 40-inch panel sizes, the VT30 incorporates new NeoPlasma technology, with a fast 600Hz mode and blisteringly fast response time of 0.001ms, making it particularly suited to 3D. Else where it has THX 2D and 3D certification, consumes 20 watts less power and comes with a WiFi LAN adaptor and two pairs of 3D glasses.

The DT30 and VT30 ranges include Viera Connect, Panasonic’s revamped internet portal. Features include Skype video calling, Viera Image Viewer for playing back 2D and 3D images via USB SD cards

There's no news on pricing yet, but the DT30 and VT30 are out in May/June, find out more from Panasonic.

Toshiba unveil new ultra-portable R-Series laptops

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 08:49 AM PST

Toshiba's latest super-light laptops float into view on the horizon.

Tearing ourselves away from MWC for a moment, we see that Toshiba have been working on more than just secretive premium tablets, in the form of their new ultra-portable R-Series laptops.

Made from magnesium alloy and hardened resin, respectively, the R830 and R850 weigh in at an approximate one-and-a-half kilos - which puts them comfortably in the featherweight category. That said, screen size remains reasonable, measuring 13.3 inches across on the R830 and 15.5 inches on the R850.

Under the hood, the R-Series laptops come in a range of specifications, the upper end seeing them loaded with 8GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 500GB, 7200rpm hard drives, and as yet unspecified Intel processors. All this performance won't come cheap mind, and while there's no pricing available yet, we're going out on a limb and predict they will cost: £lots.

Adidas miCoach fitness app coming to Android

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 07:16 AM PST

Android gets a marquee fitness app.

There's a couple of things the Android Market is short of in order to get on a level playing field with Apple's App Store, one of which is the lack of a decent fitness app. Well that's about to change with the launch of the excellent Adidas miCoach app coming this Spring.

A massive hit on the iPhone and BlackBerry, earning a five star review on T3's App Chart, the miCoach app prescribes specific training programmes for six different sports, with audible coaching offering a pep talking during your run.

The app is centred around the GPS-based pace zones, which encourage you to pick up your speed or relax depending on the coloured zone you're running in. All of your run data is then stored and instantly backed up online where you can analyse graphs and compare your performances over time. Naturally, you can also share your results with the online community.

You can go online and download a programme completely tailored to your needs or you can free run and the app will still record your time, pace, distance and calories burned.

The free coaching device also allows you to listen to music stored on your Android phone during your workout and you'll also get notifications from your work-out calendar when it's time to head out for a jog.

The Adidas miCoach app for Android was announced today at MWC in Barcelona and the only disappointment is that we'll have to wait until late April to download it from the Android Market.

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 Smart Player announced

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 06:26 AM PST

Top notch media phone Samsung Galaxy S gets PMP re-imagining.

Coming some seven months after the release of the original Samsung Galaxy S and just a couple of days after the announcement of its successor, the Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung have announced what looks like their answer to the iPod Touch: the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 Smart Player.

It may look on paper like the original Galaxy S with call-making functionality stripped out, and in most ways it is - but that's no criticism. As we said in our review of the Galaxy S back in July, the black-as-night Super AMOLED display and crisp audio playback of the original really are stunning - it's possibly the finest smartphone candidate around to be remodelled as a dedicated PMP.

Like it's predecessor, the Galaxy S Smart Player runs Android 2.2 FroYo, which brings with it full access to the web and the Android Market over WiFi. This should mean that whichever apps worked on the Galaxy S will work on the Smart Player. However, if what you're really after is a cut-price Galaxy S smartphone, Samsung have at least partly obliged by confirming that Skype calls over WiFi will be supported.

Our only serious quibble with the device is the exclusion of that gorgeous AMOLED screen, criminally replaced on the Smart Player by a 4-inch LCD display. We're sure it'll still make for fine video watching and web browsing, but robbing us of the super-contrast, black-as-the-night AMOLED screen that so charmed us on the Galaxy S on a device now dedicated to media consumption... for shame, Samsung.

The Samsung Galaxy S Smart Player will be out in the second half of the year.

LG Optimus Pad pictures: Hands-on with the LG tablet

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 06:01 AM PST

Hands-on with the 3D capable LG Optimus Pad

Having been officially unveiled as LG’s first foray into the European tablet market on Monday, the LG Optimus Pad has gone on display at Mobile World Congress 2011.

Hedging its bets between the two leading tablet sizes the Optimus Pad measures in at 8.9-inches across, smaller than the 9.7-inch market leading iPad but larger than the Android favourite, the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab. Touted as being the perfect size for portability, content viewing and comfortable one-handed use, the Optimus Pad does feel a comfortable fit in the hand if perhaps not the sturdiest of devices.

Google’s upcoming tablet-centric Android 3.0 OS, Honeycomb, comes pre-installed on the Optimus Pad with a sleek user experience guaranteed. Further improving the user experience is the speedy 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor that opens up applications without lag or delay.

Key selling point to the LG Optimus Pad is its 3D credentials with a 3D camera and video recorder joining a 3D display. These seemingly impressive specs failed to fully impress during our hands-on with the device, however. Whilst the 3D display required users to wear compatible 3D glasses, unlike its smartphone brethren the recently unveiled LG Optimus 3D, repeated attempts on a number of the available devices failed to launch the 3D video camera function.

Having finally found a unit which allowed for 3D video recording the quality and gimmick factor was somewhat impressive although lacked that killer wow factor that you would expect to come from a 3D capable tablet device. With the Optimus Pad scheduled for release in March we hope that LG irons out these issues with the otherwise impressive gadget.

What are your views on the LG Optimus Pad and its 3D credentials? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds and stay tuned to T3.com for all the latest on the Optimus Pad’s upcoming release.

LG Optimus 3D pictures: Hands-on with 3D smartphone

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 05:35 AM PST

Hands-on with the LG Optimus 3D smartphone

Launching alongside the LG Optimus Pad, the LG Optimus 3D has landed sporting a bevy of glasses-free 3D credentials, beating the eagerly awaited Nintendo 3DS to the punch.

Sporting a 4.3-inch 3D WVGA capacitive touchscreen display the Optimus 3D offers crisp, clear visuals when displaying 2D or 3D content. Much like the upcoming 3DS the Optimus 3D’s extra-dimensional content does not jump out of the screen at users instead added subtle yet very noticeable depth to images.

- LG Optimus 3D pictures: Click here to launch full hands-on gallery

The 5-megapixel dual-lens camera residing on the device’s rear allows users to snap 3D images yet sadly, despite having tried on a number of units, we were unable to get the 3D snapper to launch during our hands-on experience.

Asides from its name-giving 3D aspects the Optimus 3D is an all-round high-end device running Google’s Android 2.2 mobile operating system, FroYo. Feeling slightly large in the hard, the Optimus 3D comes across on first use as less sturdy than desired with little confidence being placed in a misguided drop or accidental bump.

The area of this 1GHz dual-core processor touting handset that provides the best use of its 3D credentials is the user interface. With 3D app centres the LG device uses 3D to its Optimus Prime, sorry, optimal prime with much thought and time clearly having been spent on the user experience.

Are 3D phones the future or the latest in a long line of passing trends? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Toshiba announce new premium tablet for UK market

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 04:37 AM PST

Premium specification tablet to make amends for defunct Folio 100.

After all the kerfuffle over Toshiba's under-priced-yet-under-powered Folio 100 tablet, it looks like Toshiba are ditching attempts to undercut Apple's iPad and are instead flinging themselves head-on into the high-end tablet game, announcing an as-yet-unnamed tablet boasting what they call "premium specifications".

Certainly, this nameless tablet contender looks to be no slouch on paper. It touts a 10.1-inch, 1200x800 pixel touchscreen, a dual-core Tegra 2 processor and what Toshiba call "Adaptive Display Technology" - an inbuilt light sensor which tweaks the brightness of the display accordingly on the fly. Similar technological sorcery is also promised for the tablet's handling of sound, presumably using an inbuilt microphone to guage background noise.

The rest of the features fall pretty well in line with what we would expect from any modern tablet (with perhaps one Cupertino-based exception): HDMI out, rear and front-facing cameras for video chatting, an accelerometer and an SD card slot. But we're intrigued by the idea of a media tablet that adjusts viewing conditions on the fly, so long as a) we can turn it off, and b) it doesn't price the new "premium" Tosh Tab out of market.

HTC Incredible S coming to the UK Q2 2011

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 03:26 AM PST

HTC Incredible S fills a gap between the Desire and the Desire HD, say HTC.

The HTC releases at MWC are coming thick and fast now, with the HTC Desire S, Wildfire S, Flyer Tablet and the Facebook-centric twosome of the HTC Cha Cha and the HTC Salsa flooding out in the last few hours. Latest among them: the follow-up to the previously US-only HTC Incredible, the HTC Incredible S.

- Check out the HTC Incredible S pictures here.

The Incredible S is, according to HTC, positioned between the HTC Desire and the Desire HD. It runs a 1GHz processor, 768MB RAM, and packs an 8MP camera and a 4-inch touchscreen (which, in size terms, does place smack bang in the middle of the Desire's 3.7 and the Desire HD's 4.3 inchers).

HTC calls the design of the Incredible S "industrial", hewn as its close relatives are from a single block of aluminium, but now featuring raised, angular details on its back and rubberised finish.

The Incredible S will come running Android 2.2 FroYo out of the box, although an update to 2.3 Gingerbread is in the works according to HTC. There's no specific release date as yet, but HTC are promising sometime early in Q2 this year.

HTC Flyer tablet coming to Three in the UK

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 03:16 AM PST

Quick on the heels of its official announcement at MWC, Three have announced that they will be the first mobile provider in the UK to offer HTC's first foray into the tablet market, the HTC Flyer.

According to David Kerrigan, head of mobile broadband at Three, "The HTC Flyer is a great addition to Three's growing range of tablets", adding that "our HTC smartphones have been extremely popular with customers, which is why we are very excited to offer the company's first tablet."

The HTC Flyer runs a single 1GHz processor and comes with 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 7-inch touchscreen - the same size as on the original Samsung Galaxy Tab. Uniquely among tablets, the HTC Flyer also comes with a stylus for handwritten notes and annotations.

HTC are promising an early Q2 release for the Flyer, although no specific date has yet been pinned down.

iPhone 5 rumours suggest a bigger 4-inch display

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 02:46 AM PST

Is Apple's next mobile set to have an HTC-bothering screen size?

Apple always stays clear of Mobile World Congress, choosing instead to unveil its handsets with a whoop and a holler in San Francisco. Despite the furore happening with handset launches in Barcelona now, it just wouldn’t be a tech week without the odd Apple iPhone rumour.

Today the rumours from earlier in the week that Apple will be bringing out an iPhone Nano have had a firm quashing, thanks to two separate reports that Apple’s next iPhone will in fact be larger. Sources who claim to be close to the part manufacturing process claim that 4-inch displays are currently being tested.

MWC 2011:
- Read all the latest from Mobile World Congress here

The strength in the rumour is that Apple needs to compete with the spate of Android phones – such as the Galaxy S 2 and the HTC Desire HD. One thing to consider is what Apple said of its iPad: that they wouldn't make a smaller 7-inch version because their 10-inch model is the optimum size. The same may ring true of the current iPhone - not to mention the rich ecosystem of iPhone apps, which would all need to be completely re-programmed to fit a screen with different dimensions.

Only time will tell, as Apple looks set to refresh the iPhone in June. Will the display be bigger? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to arrive on Vodafone

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 02:44 AM PST

Vodafone tweeter announces exclusive Galaxy Tab deal.

With the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 UK release date set for sometime in March, Samsung have also verified that the first lucky few to get their mitts on the new 10.1 inch Android tablet will be Vodafone customers.

Like it's predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the Tab 10.1 will feature a SIM card slot for texting and calling, which for the near future at least will be home only to Vodafone SIMs.

The announcement comes via Vodafone's official Twitter feed, where the resident tweeter posted: "Great news! Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 will launch exclusively with Vodafone UK" and went on to promise, "More news soon!"

The Galaxy Tab 10.1, so named after it's 10.1-inch screen, is a full 3.1 inches larger than its predecessor and runs the tablet-centric Android 3.0 Honeycomb and runs a dual-core 1GHz processor. You can take a look at our Samsung Galaxy Tab 2  video here and our gallery of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 photos here.

HTC Flyer Android tablet launches at MWC

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 01:38 AM PST

HTC tablet includes updated version of Sense

HTC has confirmed its first tablet will be the HTC Flyer, which is launching on Android 2.4, with a Honeycomb update coming soon.

T3 was lucky enough to have a look at a (non-working) version. Constructed from a single piece of aluminum with white accents, it's stunning build quality follows the same high quality as the handsets, with a 7-inch 1024x600 pixel screen, although it's a lightweight 415g. When asked why it had opted for 7-inches like the Samsung Galaxy Tab instead of near 10-inches like the Apple iPad, an HTC spokespersion said it enables ‘truly mobile use,’ because it can be held with one hand.

Surprisingly the Flyer runs a single 1.5 Ghz - rather than dual-core - processor with 1GB Ram. It also runs a new version of HTC Sense that has been optimized especially for tablets, the interface now includes what's described as a 3D experience with widgets moving in space.

Built into the tablet is HTC Scribe Technology. Supplied with the device is a stylus, but this isn’t for navigation, instead it functions more like a pen, which you can use to annotate documents and sign PDFs using digital ink. New app Notes has been optimized especially and the Flyer even synchs with Evernote over the cloud.

Additionally Timemark lets you you start an audio recording while taking notes, they sync together, so when you tap on note it jumps to the right part of the audio track. It sounds a bit like the Livescribe Pen, but certainly gives the Flyer a unique selling point and something we can't wait to try.

HTC’s equipped the Flyer with a couple of new apps. HTC Watch for streaming hundreds of movies, while OnLive lets you play 3D games, with the capability to push the game to a TV over DLNA. It’s possible these apps will appear in future HTC products

Internal storage is 32GB and there's a Micro SD slot. 3G and WiFi only versions will be available, the tablets also support Bluetooth 3.0 and N WiFi. There's a 5-megapixel main camera and front-faceing 1.3-megapixel camera,.

Accessories include a pouch with in-built stand, desktop dock and Bluetooth keyboard. HTC wouldn’t be drawn on prices, but said because of its premium built it will be towards the higher end of the tablet market.

HTC Flyer release date: Early Q2

HTC Flyer price: TBC

HTC Facebook phone duo unveiled

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 12:45 AM PST

Full QWERTY and touchscreen duo get their groove on

HTC has introduced two new ‘social networking phones.’ The HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa contain a dedicated Facebook button, enabling you to instantly share photos, music and maps to Facebook. Although they aren't official Facebook phones, HTC worked closely with the social-networking giant.

 - HTC Facebook phone pics

T3 recently had a play with the HTC Salsa and it couldn’t be simpler to use. Got a photo you want to upload to Facebook? One press of the button opens a menu where you can choose to post the picture as well as determining who will be able to see it and even add a tag. It's context sensitive too, so one click of the Facebook button from within Google Maps lets you post it directly to Places, or when listening to music the track information is uploaded to Facebook.

Equipped with a full QWERTY and 2.6-inch 480x320 capacitive touchscreen the ChaCha runs a new version of HTC Sense optimized for landscape displays.

The HTC Salsa offers the same experience as the ChaCha but with a full 3.4-inch 480x320  touchscreen. The HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa will both run Gingerbread (Android 2.4) and are powered by a 600Mhz Qualcom 7277 processor and 512Mb RAM.  Each handset has a primary 5-megapixel camera and secondary VGA camera.

Elsewhere Facebook integrates with HTC Sense. Facebook messages and conversations are integrated within your messages and instead of just showing dates and times, your calendar integrates with Facebook so you can see information about who is attending events. You can use Facebook chat.

Although we were only able to try out the HTC Salsa, initial impressions are favourable, the build is typical HTC standard and Facebook integration is thorough, but quite subtle. Unlike the INQ Cloud Touch, which seems to be pitched as an entry-level device; HTC is targeting a slightly more affluent market, with the ChaCha and Salsa, although the company couldn’t confirm pricing, it did say it the handsets will sit between the HTC Wildfire S and HTC Desire S.

BBC iPlayer's future is mobile

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 11:30 PM PST

The way we view television via the iPlayer could soon be changed

The head of on-demand programming for BBC, Daniel Danker, has been at the helm when the iPlayer has broken records, with almost 50 million new catchup requests in a four-month period.

In the last month, the iPlayer has seen a 12% increase from December 2010 and 35% from January 2010 in programme requests, with almost 162 million requests made. While most of these requests were online, the iPlayer's future seems to be in mobile.

Danker said to The Guardian, "The ratio of growth we're seeing [of mobile viewing] is incredible." He thinks that the mobile viewing of the iPlayer will continue to grow, and he thinks people will view the iPlayer differently by the end of the year.

The approach to television has already changed. He said, "When the traditional primetime ends and families do different things – some go to sleep, some leave the living room, others do work – what happens is that people go into their bedroom and are watching on their tablets or on their mobile. That's super interesting to us."

Danker has hinted that newer versions of the iPlayer would include streaming via mobile data, offline viewing and more.

The iPlayer has released its iPad and Android apps recently.

Faster broadband could add value to UK house prices

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 11:00 PM PST

Consumers indicate broadband is on their must-have list when house hunting.

A recent survey published by ISPReview indicates that a faster and reliable broadband connection could increase UK house prices.

ISP Review polled 733 people and the results revealed that broadband was an important consideration in house-hunting. The result showed that almost two-thirds of UK internet users would be discouraged from buying a new house if it did not have a fast broadband connection.

Half of the people who were polled said that they would pay more for a house with faster connectivity than the one they currently owned.

Almost 74% of respondents said broadband was critically important to their home life, 50.4% said they would pay more for a house with faster broadband and almost 69% said lack of fast broadband would put them off from buying a beautiful new house.

Even holidays and hotels were not spared by the apparently broadband hungry consumers. 37.2% said they would pay more for a holiday/hotel with in-room broadband.

With the British internet consumers placing so much importance on broadband, could house prices really be boosted?
