Whilst Facebook is continuing to grown and expanding its following MySpace is dwindling so as the Facebook Crush Notifier launches to replace the banned breakup tracker, News Corp has started the sales process of MySpace in an attempt to recoup some of its initial $580 million investment.

Apple's struggles continue as just weeks after the company lost CEO and talisman Steve Jobs to illness chief designer and mastermind behind the iPod, iPad and iPhone's market dominating looks Jonathan Ive looks set to leave Apple to return to his native UK. With two key players in the Apple bandwagon seemingly on the ropse, the company has been spotted stealing Android technology with an internal Apple App using Android's pattern handset lock system.

New mobile handsets are a daily occurrence but today saw news of two of 2011's expected big players. Whilst the iPhone 5 screen leaked hinting towards a larger device with smaller bezel, the Samsung Galaxy S II has appeared for pre-order on Play.com pegged with a £599.99 price tag and May 6th arrival following a MWC 2011 unveiling earlier this month.

Dell Venue Pro release finally hits the UK

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 08:41 AM PST

QWERTY slider handset joins the Phone 7 party

The long overdue Dell Venue Pro has officially launched in the UK with the Windows Phone 7 handset being made available direct from Dell for £459 SIM-free.

Delayed due to a reported firmware issue, Dell’s opening Phone 7 handset was beaten to an OS first earlier this month when the HTC 7 Pro launched featuring a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Whilst the HTC handset features a landscape keyboard, the new Dell model drops its keyboard in a portraight stance, a position more attuned to the landscape fearing Microsoft operating system.

One of the handsets outed at the launch of the Windows Phone 7 OS launch late last year, the Dell Venue Pro was originally set to touch down ahead of the Christmas period before being struck by the first round of delays. Later pegged for an early February arrival, the Dell device once again missed its launch date before finally marking its arrival on the brink of March.

As well as touting Microsoft’s much praised mobile OS and a physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the Dell Venue Pro features a 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 16GB of internal storage all wra[pped around a 4.1-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen display.

Have you been holding off for the Dell Venue Pro or did the QWERTY touting HTC 7 Pro tempt you away from the now launched Dell device? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

News Corp open sales process for MySpace.com

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 07:56 AM PST

News Corp look to recoup $580 million MySpace fee

News Corp, owner of the recently launch iPad newspaper The Daily, has officially stared the sales process for former online social networking giant MySpace, six years after the media conglomerate acquired the website.

Bought back in 2005 for the hefty sum of $580 million (£357.6 million at today’s rate) News Corp beat rivaling bids from the likes of MTV owners Viacom Inc to take ownership of the then formidable social entertainment outlet.

The rapid rise to dominance of Facebook, however, has seen interest in MySpace dwindle with the online site having recently cut 500 jobs. It is believed that News Corp has already received around 20 enquires regarding sales and potential spin-off possibilities for the now much ignored site.

With more than half a billion dollars to recoup from the initial outlay, News Corp is facing a difficult challenge in recovering its loses whilst bitter rival Facebook is reeling from a Oscars loss of for The Social Network, a Hollywood spin-off of the story of Facebook’s founding and its mastermind, Mark Zuckerberg.

Do you still use MySpace or is Facebook the only social outlet for you? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Crush Notifier replaces Facebook Breakup app

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 07:49 AM PST

Make a love connection, in an anonymous, creepy sort of way

The developers of the rapidly banned Facebook Breakup Notifier, which sent users an email when friends of their choosing ended their relationships, have returned with an app that will let the apple of your eye know that someone fancies them.

The Crush Notifier web app will send desired companion an email to let them know that one of their friends is "crushing on them", but they won't know who. Kind of like an anonymous Valentine's card, but in an internet stalker kind of way.

For a Love Connection to be made, the crushee also has to send a crush request to the crusher. The app will then notify the prospective lovebirds of each other's interest and leave the sparks to fly. That means two people have to use the service to contact each other independently before a connection can be made.

Installing the Crush Notifier app will give you two free credits to anonymously let people know that you like then, but if you're planning on spreading your wild oats liberally then you'll need to buy more crush notifiers through Facebook Credits.

The Breakup Notifier was automatically banned by Facebook because of a massive spike in usage which saw 3.6 million people sign up for the notifications in just three days. We'll see how long this one lasts...

Apple iPad 2 official looking picture leaks ahead of launch

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 07:04 AM PST

Second-gen iPad does the rounds ahead of official unveiling

An official looking render of the upcoming Apple iPad 2 has appeared online just days ahead of the tablet’s official unveiling on March 2nd.

Appearing on tech blog BGR, the image, which was reportedly supplied by an unnamed tipster, shows off what is claimed to be the second-generation Apple tablet with a number of key new feature additions on display.

Touting a rear-facing camera, larger back-mounted speaker and a slimmer, flat-backed form factor the leaked iPad 2 image appears to confirm a number of the widely expected additions to this week’s unveiling. Whilst as with all things Apple this render is by no means an official release but does sport Apple’s trademark look, hinting towards the leak of an official image.

Earlier today the front, screen-encapsulating, façade of the iPad 2 was snapped away from the rest of the tablet’s body. Whilst this might not sound all too special, the façade that was caught out in the wild was a white model, suggesting this week’s Apple event could see a lighter-hued device launching alongside the standard black offering.

Which of the iPad 2’s expected new features are you most excited about? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Samsung Galaxy S II priced £599 ahead of May 6th release

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 06:30 AM PST

Second-gen Galaxy S touching down early May under £600

Following speculation of a sky-high pricing last week, online retailer Play.com has become the latest outlet to make the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II available for pre-order with the device coming in at £599.99.

Listed only the 16GB model, Play’s Galaxy S II pricing is the lowest to date with the handset previously appearing on Expansys priced £649.99. Whilst the Galaxy S II was made available for pre-order with online tech retailer Clove with a claimed March arrival, its £612 16GB offering was overshaddowed by the hefty £708 price tag bestowed upon the 32GB model.

Set to land sporting a 1GHz dual-core processor and stunning 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, the Galaxy S II will come equipped with an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera with Full HD 1080p video recording capabilities and a second 2-megapixel forward-facing snapper. Boasting a stunningly sleek design the Galaxy S II measures in at just 8.49mm thick and a mere 116 grams in weight.

The May 6th shipping date that has touched down alongside the handset’s Play.com availability, is fitting with official word from a Samsung spokeswomen who, talking exclusively with T3.com, said: “The Galaxy S II will be available in the second quarter during May.” She added: “We are unable to comment on price as this is set by the operators."

Does the latest sub-£600 price tag make the Galaxy S II more appealing? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Jonathan Ive rumoured to be leaving Apple for UK return

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 04:31 AM PST

Apple on the back foot as Ive looks to leave following Steve Jobs absence

Apple’s iconic Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, Jonathan Ive is reportedly contemplating leaving the fruity tech giant in a bid to return to his native UK.

Ive, creative mastermind behind the fluid curves and insatiable desirability factor that surround Apple’s most high profile products such as the iPod, iPhone and iPad, is reported by The Sunday Times to be at “loggerheads” with Apple over his intent on moving back to the UK in order to educate his children on home soil.

Claimed to be on the brink of cashing in a three year ‘golden-handcuff’ deal that will see him bank around £25 million in Apple shares, Ive is believed to have expressed his desires to Apple’s board with a negative response to his proposed relocation and trans-Atlantic commuting intentions.

A close family friend is quoted in the reports stating: "Unfortunately he is just too valuable to Apple and they told him in no uncertain terms that if he headed back to England he would not be able to sustain his position with them."

Responsible for one of Apple’s key selling point and famed trademark standards, designer Ive’s departure would mark a serious blow for the tech behemoth that is currently reeling from the latest medically-induced leave of absence for CEO Steve Jobs. Jobs, a survivor of pancreatic cancer, looks unlikely to return to his position with Apple after a US tabloid claimed theformidable front man has just six weeks left to live having been spotted leaving a cancer specialist in California.

Would Apple’s industry topping design quality be affected by the departure of Ive or is its high standards ingrained deeper than one man? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Vodafone network downed following exchange break-in

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 03:57 AM PST

Break-in at Basingstoke exchange cripples Vodafone network

Mobile network provider Vodafone has confirmed users will face disruptions to their voice and data services following a break-in at an exchange centre in Basingstoke.

With calls, text messages and mobile internet coverage all downed for a number of the network’s users, Vodafone was keen to stress that although an inconvenience to user’s communication services all personal data has remained secure.

An official release from the network said: "We had a break in last night at one of our technical facilities which resulted in damage done to some of our equipment. This means that some customers may be experiencing temporary loss of voice, SMS and internet services.” Vodafone added: "We are working quickly to restore these and will be back to normal as soon as we can. There has been no impact on the privacy of customers' data."

With rising demand on networks and higher levels of mobile data required, smartphones and increased user activity has put a strain on bandwidth capabilities in recent years, often resulting in data outages for all of the major network providers.

Whilst it is currently unknown exactly how many users have been affected by the latest Vodafone outage, a number of the network’s customers have been turning to Twitter to vent their frustrations. Twitter user @Beckybrownn tweeted: “deffo changing my network asap!#vodafone you're useless!!!” whilst user @matt_sims wrote: “Following this morning's outage, the #vodafone network has just come back online for me here in Farnborough.”

Have you experienced issues with your Vodafone network coverage this morning? Let us know and share your thoughts and experiences of the issue with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple employees testing Android pattern unlock for iOS

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 03:09 AM PST

'Apple Connect' app bears striking resemblance to Android security feature

Does the lock screen to the right seem familiar to you? If so, it’s probably because it’s similar to the one used on Android. These particular screen grabs are from an iPhone though, having been leaked to 9to5Mac from somebody inside Apple.

The pattern-unlock is a new feature rolled out for the ‘Apple Connect’ app, which is exclusive to Apple employees. Apple Connect is a forum for the company to try out new ideas and UI features; some end up in consumers’ iPhones, some don’t.

This type of phone security lock, which requires you to draw a pattern instead of inputting a code, has been a popular feature on Android since launch and Apple has obviously taken note, but don’t get too excited – Google will almost certainly hold a patent on this interface, making it unlikely to find its way into iPhones outside of Apple’s Cupertino HQ.

If Apple can find a way around this, 9to5Mac is suggesting that the company may use the system in conjunction with NFC tech in the next iPhone, to enable users to pay for items more easily and securely. If you can think of any better ways to unlock your phone, let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

White iPad 2 spotted ahead of Wednesday's launch event

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 03:04 AM PST

White iPad 2 leaks online ahead of official unveiling

Just days ahead of the official unveiling of the second-generation iPad, leaked pictures of a white iPad 2 have emerged suggesting the imminent arrival of a lighter-hued tablet.

The picture, which reportedly appeared in the inbox of Apple bloggers 9 to 5 Mac, shows the outer screen frame from the upcoming iPad 2 sporting a white coat of paint, something which the company has failed to yet master on its latest handset release, the Apple iPhone 4.

Once again hinting towards the seemingly guaranteed, the latest iPad 2 leak shows the white tablet shell touting a cut-out for a small forward-facing camera. The widely predicted inclusion for the second-generation iPad is reported to come sporting Apple's FaceTime video calling technology.

Set to be unveiled later this week on March 2nd, Apple’s imminent tablet update is also expected to see the device come sporting a slimmer form factor and a second, higher-res camera positioned around the back. With the last official word from Apple on the heavily delayed white iPhone 4 suggesting a spring arrival, we could well see the lighter-toned iPhone 4 touchdown alongside its colour copying tablet counterpart.

Does the inclusion of a white iPad 2 increase your desire for the highly anticipated device? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 teased

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 03:01 AM PST

"You won't have to wait years," says Sega exec.

It’d be fair to say that Sonic 4 Episode 1 didn’t quite live up to heady expectations. The blue critter didn’t look right, the game didn’t exactly flow and it lacked the charm of its early 90s predecessors.

But now Sega has the chance to put it all right, with its brand manager Ken Balough taking to the game maker’s official forum to tease details of Sonic 4 Episode 2.

Quizzed about the sequel, Balough said, "I certainly cannot deny there were some elements that could have been done better – and I could say that about most games I've worked on. That's why Episode II gives us that opportunity to address them (or as much as possible)."

Balough didn’t offer up details of any changes, but did say the wait for Sonic 4 Episode 2 wouldn’t be long, “…a la Duke Nukem Forever.” That’s reassuring, and hopefully means we’ll see the new title hit iOS, Xbox Live and PSN soon.

What do you want from Sonic 4 Episode 2? Let us know on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

BlackBerry PlayBook to support Android apps

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 02:49 AM PST

RIM joining forces with Google on a united app front

The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has been filmed running Android applications, despite being announced with its own proprietary QNX operating system.

In the video which you can see below, the PlayBook is being demonstrated by a RIM representative during Mobile World Congress, who makes the interesting Google Android OS support reveal.

Talk of the PlayBook getting Android apps filtered through earlier this month, and this seems to be the most concrete evidence yet of what looks like a sensible business move from the guys at RIM.

Opening its application doors to an already growing Android Market, is likely to increase the appeal of the device which is strongly tipped to give the iPad (and the iPad 2) a run for its money in 2011.

A UK release date for the BlackBerry PlayBook has yet to be confirmed, despite the BlackBerry PlayBook 4G which is an almost identical device plus 4G support, hitting US stores in the summer.

You can check out the BlackBerry PlayBook video in question below.

Archos Arnova Android tablets outed

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 02:13 AM PST

Resistive panels and ageing version of Android for new slates.

Archos has just given the official nod to two new tablets, dubbed the Arnova 8 and Arnova 10. And while you might be jonesing for a top-end Honeycomb effort, these Android-packing slates are all about keeping costs low, which means specs are a tad compromised.

The Arnova 8 crams in a somewhat sluggish 600MHz processor, with a mere 4GB of storage, old-school Android 2.1 and a pesky resistive touchscreen. That said, it only costs $150 (£93) across the pond, so getting het up about its failure to kick it with the Motorola Xoom is hardly worthwhile.

The more capacious Arnova 10 comes with the same 600MHz chip and Android software, but bulks up to 8GB, again using a resistive panel. It comes in at $199 (£123). Each model touts SD support, g standard Wi-Fi and 22 hours battery for music.

What is baffling, however, is Archos’ plan to release two new versions of these Arnova slates in April, with Android 2.3, capacitive panels and 1GHz processors. Word is that the prices will stay the same.

It all begs the question: why buy a compromised Archos Arnova now when you can get a decent one in under two months? Let us know what you think of this somewhat unique strategy over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Nintendo 3DS sells out in Japan

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 01:04 AM PST

Nintendo on course for 4 million global sales target.

The Nintendo 3Ds hit shelves in Japan over the weekend, but soon flew off of them, with the entire shipment of 400,000 selling out within 24 hours. Major stores in Tokyo reportedly ran out by midday on Saturday.

Pre-orders for the next batch of Nintendo 3DSs has already started, with the gaming giant easily on course to hit its target of shifting 1.5 million units in Japan by 31 March. It hopes to have sold 4 million globally by the same date.

The Nintendo 3DS goes on sale here in the UK on 25 March, and will set punters back £229.99, although some stores are already discounting the three-dimensional winner.

Gmail account reset affecting thousands

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 11:56 PM PST

Big G struggling to recover messages of around 150,000 Gmail users.

Gmail has suffered from a major reset problem over the weekend, with thousands of users finding that their messages have disappeared into the ether and seeing ‘Welcome to Gmail’ screens when they log in.

Google is aware of the problem, issuing a series of statements overnight via its Apps Status Dashboard. The latest, at 6.36am UK time reads, “Our team is continuing to investigate this issue. We will provide an update by February 28, 2011 8:36:00 AM UTC with more information about this problem. Thank you for your patience.”

The search giant has said around 0.08 per cent of users have been affected, around 150,000 people. Small change considering the number of Gmail users globally, but still a big deal for those waking up to find their email wiped.

The Big G says, “Affected users will be temporarily unable to sign in while we repair their accounts.” Has your Gmail been hit? Tell us now over on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iPhone 5 leak: bigger screen, thinner bezel

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 11:36 PM PST

Rumours of bigger iPhone gather pace after Chinese site posts pic.

The iPhone 5 looks set to rock a much bigger screen and thinner bezel than the iPhone 4, after a new image of the device’s panel apparently leaked via a Chinese Apple parts reseller.

The pic clearly shows a more capacious panel, with the screen appearing to sit almost flush to the edge of the device. The bezel is also notably smaller than that found on the current iPhone.

Recent rumours have suggested Cupertino is planning on pushing the iPhone 5’s screen up to around 4-inches. And while this leak doesn’t offer up any measurements, initial glances suggest this panel could well measure just that.

The iPhone 5 will be looking to compete with a raft of phones packing larger screen real estate, from the HTC Incredible S to the Google Nexus One. All is likely to be revealed at Apple’s WWDC event, pegged for June.

Stay tuned for more on the iPhone 5 here and over on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
