Mobile applications dominate our portable tech's interface nowadays with two new additions to the app world today grabbing our attention. With the BBC revealing that a BBC iPlayer app will launch for the iPad on Thursday, it was left to that bastion of mobile application, Angry Birds to steal the show with the arrival of a Valentine's Day themed Angry Birds special for the Seasons application.

Nintendo 3DS release day is fast approaching and today Ninty has whet our glasses-free 3D gaming appetites with the announcement of the full list of launch day titles. With 13 games heading for launch, the 3DS looks in stronger shape than stateside PS3 consoles that are currently being attacked by LG over claimed patent infringements.

Apple leaks return for yet another day but for once they are on the strong side with dates arriving for both the mooted iPhone 5 and expected MacBook Pro refreshes. Whilts the Apple iPhone 5 release date has been pegged June 5th to coincide with WWDC, the MacBook Pro refresh is set to hit the UK on March 11th.

Android Market Web App Store launches: Video update

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 10:17 AM PST

New Android web market makes finding Android apps easier. Watch the Android web market video to see just how.

Source: T3 tech videos l Original: Android Web Market video

Among the hubbub of yesterdays Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) announcement, it was easy to miss the unassuming news that Google has completely refreshed the web version of the Android Market. The Market web store, which has gone live now, brings the online presence of the Market in line with what’s currently offered by Apple – namely a list of every available app, with pictures, reviews and charts.

Previously, Android’s web store only sported a ‘featured’ section, and the info on offer was somewhat sparse. This update should allow users to properly scan and compare apps on their computers before downloading. Another update came in the form of in-app payments, which will allow for extra content, such as levels for games to be bought on the go.

In-app payments is a feature sweeping the board at the moment; BlackBerry App World has just received a bump up to version 2.1, which also gifts the purchasing option du jour. What do you make of the new Android Market web store? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play confirmed for Three in UK

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 09:01 AM PST

Xperia Play to land on all five major UK mobile networks

Three has become the final of the UK’s big five mobile network providers to announce it will offer the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset, formerly known as the PSP Phone.

Following in the footsteps of O2, Orange and T-mobile which announced their intentions for the Xperia Play in the past 24 hours after Vodafone broke cover to be the first network to confirm it would stock the upcoming gaming-centric handset, an official Three press release revealed: “Three has just announced it’s ranging the Sony Ericsson XPERIA play over on @ThreeUK.”

Speaking on the network’s adoption of the Xperia Play Three’s Head of Branded Devices, Sylvia Chind said: “At Three we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA play. We believe this handset celebrates a further step change in the way in which consumers use data, merging mobile communications and entertainment.”

Chind went on to add: The Sony Ericsson XPERIA play is perfect for gamers but above all, it’s a top-of-the-range smartphone which is why we are so excited to be ranging it on our award winning network.”

Whilst full specifications and pricing for the Xperia Play remain a mystery, the device, confirmed to be officially unveiled during a Sony Ericsson press conference in Barcelona this coming Sunday, February 13th, ahead of the opening day of MWC 2011, is expected to land in the UK in April following arrival confirmation by Orange.

Does the widespread adoption of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play by networks give you faith in the upcoming handset or give the device a distinct whiff of bandwagon jumping? Let us know your thoughts on the device via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Nintendo boss slams cheap App Store games

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 08:05 AM PST

Ninty says low-cost games are harming the industry

Nintendo chief Reggie Fils-Amie has hit out at the low price of games on mobile app stores saying that it has created a mentality that portable games should be available on the cheap.

Fils-Amie says that a game like Angry Birds, which costs only 59p on the iPhone and is free on Android is the exception to the rule and that the majority of cheap mobile games are damaging the industry.

Speaking to GTTV Magazine he reckons that customers now expect that they can get their hands on a game for only a couple of bucks, rather than the £30-odd Nintendo charges for it's top level portable DS games.

"I actually think that one of the biggest risks today in our industry are these inexpensive games that are candidly disposable from a consumer standpoint," he says.

"Angry Birds is a great piece of experience but that is one compared to thousands of other pieces of content that for one or two dollars I think actually create a mentality for the consumer that a piece of gaming content should only be two dollars. I actually think some of those games are overpriced at one or two dollars but that’s a whole different story."

Of course Nintendo has a vested interest in the low prices of App Store games, which drastically under-cut those on their own console, the lack of depth and quality on offer not withstanding.

It'll be interesting to see how the company prices Angry Birds when it is launched for the 3DS later this year. Will gamers be willing to splash out console prices?

PES 2011 3D and Super Street Fighter IV 3D confirmed to launch alongside console

The full line-up of games set to be released alongside the March 25th UK arrival of the Nintendo 3DS has been released with 13 titles preparing for the launch day 3D console treatment.

Covering all bases with a mixture of beat ‘em-up, sport, adventure and more relaxed gaming experiences, the selection of launch titles will see nine different developers creating content with Nintendo self publishing Pilotwings Resort and nintendogs.

Most publicised of the launch title’s are Konami’s PES 2011 3D which will allow gamers to get down to pitch level with the new 3D-enhancing player view camera angles and Super Street Fighter IV which will offer an extra-dimensional take on the console classic.

Launch title favourite Ridge Racer will be hitting the 3DS when it lands in stores on March 25th as will the EA life simulation The Sims 3 and LucasArts’ LEGO Star Wars III The Clone Wars. Angry Birds Valentine's Day special hits Seasons update

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 04:55 AM PST

Valentine's Day update lands for Angry Birds Seasons

Following an update to the original Angry Birds offering yesterday developer Rovio has released an update to Angry Birds Seasons bringing 15 love-filled Valentine’s Day themed levels to the mobile application.

Having sported Halloween and Christmas levels in recent iterations, the Angry Birds Seasons app now tackles Valentine’s Day with a new episode entitled “Hogs and Kisses” which, as you might expect, features a fanciful feast of pink-hued backdrops, heart-breaking bird-flinging action and stereotypical romantic connotation piggy strongholds.

Available for iOS and Android devices, belated Angry Birds upstarts can download the iPhone and iPad versions of Angry Birds Seasons from the Apple App Store for 59p and £1.19 respectively or for Android handsets free of charge in the Android Market. Users who have already downloaded the Angry Birds Seasons app can add the Valentine’s Day levels via a free downloadable update.

Those users who don’t feel dutifully struck by Cupid’s Angry Birds arrow following the new selection of levels, the update also offers gamers the chance to create and send Angry Birds Valentine’s Day cards to loved ones via Facebook.

Would you significant other appreciate an Angry Birds Valentine’s Day card or would you find yourself hiding like an egg-stealing pig? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Android 2.4 due for April release

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 03:50 AM PST

No sooner were we rubbing our hands at Android 2.3 AKA Gingerbread, Google have gone and announced 2.4 will be taking over, as early as April.

The rumour mill has been working overtime to try and find out what the new OS will be called, with the frontrunners being either Ice Cream, or er… Ice Cream Sandwich.

The reason? Google wants to run Honeycomb on smartphones in addition to tablets – which it cannot currently do on its current batch of single-core devices. The first handset to be rolled out with the new and improved OS is Viewsonic’s ViewPad 4, which is due to be unveiled at MWC this week with a launch date set for April.

Early specs on the ViewPad suggests it will pack a 4.1-inch screen, HD 720p video recording, Flash 10.1 and a 5mp auto focus camera. Impressive.

BBC iPlayer app to launch for iPad this week, February 10th

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 03:39 AM PST

iPlayer app to finally hit iOS devices this week

BBC iPlayer is to hit the Apple iPad in app form later this week as a Beeb head leaks the February 10th arrival via micro-blogging site Twitter.

Letting slip full details of the imminent launch Geoff Marshall, Interactive Operations Manager for the BBC, tweeted via his personal feed: "iPlayer App for iPad is being released this Thursday - 10th Feb. 3G connection is browse only. Browse+Playback requires Wi-Fi."

Adding that the information came directly from an internal BBC briefing, Marshall’s claims suggest the iPlayer app will be exclusively available for the iPad from Thursday with iPhone touting iPlayer fans facing a continued wait for on-demand BBC content on the move.

Announcing in February of last year that iPlayer would be making its way to iOS, it is believed that the BBC will roll out the iPad version of the service in the US with stateside users required to pay a subscription fee to view the bevy of catch-up content.

HTC will have best phones at MWC 2011, say T3 readers

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 03:14 AM PST

T3 Polls: Your chance to have your say

Every week we let you go to battle amongst yourselves over a hot tech topic. Last week we shoved Mobile World Congress into your minds, with a question about the mobile manufacturers waiting to spring new handsets on you.

It was a simple one: which manufacturer do you think will own at next week’s show? The results were clear: your firm favourite was HTC, which took home a huge 47.86 per cent of the vote despite being on of eight options. HTC is expected to drop the Desire 2 at MWC, so perhaps that’s why you’re so excited?

Second and third place went to Samsung (19.66 per cent) and Sony Ericsson (13.68 per cent) respectively, who’ve both got hotly tipped handsets under their belts. Trailing below that were RIM, Nokia, LG and Dell, all hovering around the 4-5 per cent mark. Acer, who sporadically drop mobiles but have yet to make a big splash, didn’t pick up a vote. Got anything to add? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play release date set for April

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 03:09 AM PST

Orange and T-Mobile to host Xperia Play from April

Orange has become the latest UK mobile network provider to confirm it will host the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Play PSP Phone leaking that the long awaited device will be available from April.

With O2 having already announced via Twitter “Awesome news - the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is coming to O2,” Orange’s PR manager, Conor Maples, took to the micro-blogging site to declare, with a slight misspelling, "Yes we are due to take the Experia Play [sic] in April."

Speaking directly with T3 a fellow member of the Orange PR team confirmed that the service provider will indeed be stocking the Xperia Play in the UK from April as will the company’s Everything Everywhere brethren, T-Mobile.

Whilst no further light could be shed on an exact arrival date or pricing on the Android powered device, the latest confirmations see Orange and T-Mobile join Vodafone and the recently declared O2 as providers of the forthcoming Xperia Play leaving Three as the only major UK network yet to confirm its intentions for the gaming-centric handset.

Will Sony’s PSP Phone really be worth the hype and excitement or will it fall far short of expectations? Share your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

New MacBook Pro UK release date: March 11th

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 03:09 AM PST

Imminent refresh sees stock of current model run dry

If you’re thinking of buying a MacBook Pro you’d be best holding off for a few weeks, as leaked information from Best Buy has revealed that the line is set for a refresh on March 11th. The news follows weeks of low stock levels on in Apple stores, and all signs point to a completely new machine.

Little is known about the new models other than that the pricing will be in line with the current generation – the 13-inch base model will still start at $1199 (£1020). Rumours abound, though.

Some websites claim that the new Pros will benefit from flash storage as in the new MacBook Airs, while others claim that the machines will feature the Intel Sandy Bridge processors. Either way, the new Pro is likely to feature quad-core innards. What do you want from the incoming MacBook Pro? Let us know on the T3 Twitter feed.

Samsung PL20 unleashed

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Bargain-bucket snapper loaded up with must-have tech.

Samsung has just pulled the wrappers off of its new budget compact snapper, the PL20. And while it comes in at a penny shy of £100, it’s got features that’d make cameras twice that price blush.

As well as a more than ample 14 megapixel sensor, you’ll find a massive 27mm wide angle lens, as well as 5x optical zoom for getting right into the action from any distance.

Best of all, it rocks HD Ready 720p video smarts, with shots recorded at 24fps. Considering the price that’s mighty impressive. Chuck in a Smart Auto function for getting the very best snaps without tinkering with the settings, and you’re looking at a gadget must-have. Samsung has also ditched its reliance on AA batteries for its low-end compacts, switching to a rechargeable effort instead.

It’s up for grabs in March in black, red, silver and pink. Surely worth a punt if you want a basic camera for lugging round festivals and the like this summer.

LG calls for PS3 sales ban in the US

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 02:35 AM PST

LG versus Sony: Round two

LG is at war with Sony after the Seoul-based manufacturer filed two complaints with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) over a series of patent infringements.

Blu-ray technology used for the PlayStation 3 is said to have infringed on four LG patents, with Sony HD TVs also claimed to have infringed on a further four patents.

Patents under scrutiny relating to Blu-ray patents include dealing with multiple data streams like different camera angles, and a system to reproduce data that’s stored on a read-only device. The Sony TV claim relates to high-definition receivers and receiving and processing signals.

This latest legal wrangling follows closely on from an investigation carried out by the ITC late last year into claims that LG mobile phones are infringing on seven Sony patents.

In what could be a messy period of legal wrangling, we sincerely hope it doesn't result in our Stateside friends being denied some PS3 gaming action.

Xbox TV channel incoming?

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 01:04 AM PST

Conan O'Brien producer lifts lid on Big M's plans.

Microsoft is plotting a dedicated Xbox TV channel, with claims that the streaming service could be ready to hit gaming hubs in autumn this year. The news follows reports last year which suggested Microsoft was looking into using the Xbox 360 as a conduit for cable companies in the US to deliver channels and TV content.

The executive producer for US comedian and presenter Conan O’Brien, Jeff Ross, claims he has had talks with Microsoft about a potential hook-up, but pulled out because there were too many unknowns.

He says that while there were plans for new content and a proper channel, the Big M was still lacking ideas. Ross said, "The Xbox thing - a lot of the conversations were 'well, it's a show, but it's not a show and there are no breaks, but maybe there are breaks and it's not 60 minutes, it's this' and nobody really knew what it was.”

"I think it's coming and it's big,” he added. “It's just that we weren't in a position at that point to figure out what it was."

It is clear that Microsoft is keen to use its Xbox 360 presence to tap into TV, at a time when services like Lovefilm and iPlayer are doing the business on the rival PS3. Would you watch TV on your Xbox? Let us know what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

iPhone 5 release date 5 June?

Posted: 07 Feb 2011 11:40 PM PST

Online chatter claims WWDC pegged for first week in June.

Is the iPhone 5 set to outed on 5 June? The NFC-touting blower could make a debut then, with rumours flying that Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), has been lined up for the first week in June.

The eagle-eyed Mac fans at AppleBitch have been keeping an eye on the Moscone Centre website, the venue where Apple holds WWDC. From 5-9 June, the centre says it’s holding a “corporate meeting”, a phrase used in previous years by Apple in reference to its developer bash.

This coincides with leaked dates in the San Francisco Chronicle. If these dates are spot on, we’re likely to see the iPhone 5 take a bow on the first day of proceedings, as was the case with the iPhone 3GS in 2009 and the iPhone 4 in 2010.

The iPhone 5 is expected to rock NFC smarts, as well as a rumoured slimline design. Stay tuned here and to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more as we get it.
