Weird News: Mining for iPods and robot internet

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 03:33 AM PST

This week's more eccentric goings in the tech world...

Mining for iPods

Indium, the element that helps create the touch-screen technology found on iPods and flat screen televisions, could be set to re-invigorate mines in Cornwall after it was discovered inside an ancient mine. A small amount of Indium is used in liquid crystal display screens for many other household gadgets and the value of the rare element has rocketed in recent news. So the folks of Cornwall may have just struck some serious iGold.

The internet: Strictly for robots

It seems the world wide web we are most familiar with is not good enough for our cyborg compatriots as the guys at RobotEarth revealed this week plans for an internet that will let robots share information between each other. While we don't imagine this will be banter about the football at the weekend or epic fail videos, according to the RoboEarth group, the plan is to get robots to "autonomously carry out useful tasks that were not explicitly planned for at design time." We don't know if we like the sound of that...

Farm filled with RAM

Yes, once again Brits have been shown to lack knowledge of some of the most commonly used tech terminology . In a poll conducted by deals specialists www.myvouchercodes.co.uk to investigate attitudes towards technology, the term ‘motherboard’ was revealed as the most confusing tech term for Brits. Other startling findings include 27% of people believing the term ‘RAM’ was a farmyard animal and 26% of people believing that ‘3G’ stood for ‘3 dimensional television.’

World's largest...

In wouldn’t be a weird tech news week with out a rudimentary ‘World’s largest’ claim. This week it comes courtesy of NiCT (National Institute of Information and Communications Technology) in Japan, where the largest glasses-free 3D display currently resides. At a whopping 200-inches you can enjoy the 3D splendour without looking like a Clark Kent reject.

Will Carling iPad hunt

The former England rugby captain made the headlines after tracking down his beloved Apple tablet having left it on the train. Keeping his Twitter followers updated on the latest events, Carling used his MobileMe tracker service to finally hunt down the whereabouts of his iPad and once the new owners realised that it was being traced, handed it into a police station.

Virtual confessions from your iPhone

The greatest development in religion since Catholicism Wow! and the Buddy Christ, the Catholic Church has approved an application which allows users to confess their sins on the go without visiting the dreaded confession box. Jesus-followers can create a personal conscience profile based on their age, sex, job and marital status, while helping them deal with their earthly misdemeanors.

Posh and her Gold iPhone 4

When she’s not in the company of Goldenballs aka England football legend Mr Beckham himself, Mrs Beckham it seems has a constant reminder of her football fella having shown off an gold designed iPhone 4. While it’s not the handy work of gadget-blinger Stuart Hughes, Posh was also snapped sporting a very personal lock screen image as David Beckham can be seen posing topless for his wife.

And finally...

Steve Jobs wants to puke

Despite Mr Jobs publicly announcing that he would be taking indefinite leave from the Cupertino company, it seems he can’t keep away from the place having been spotted on the premises in recent weeks. But it’s not the only place the iPod impresario has cropped up this week. Check out Jobs some time before he mastered the charismatic art of performing on stage in front of hundreds of journalists and Apple fanbois. We particularly enjoy a younger Jobs being asked if he needs to go to the toilet before he goes on air.

Opera for iPad set for MWC

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Safari-bothering browser set to make leap to Apple tablet.

Opera has officially confirmed it will unveil a spanking new version of its browser for the iPad at next week’s Mobile World Congress.

With over 105 million people a month using Opera on their mobiles, the Norwegian browser people are keen to get onto Apple’s best-selling slate. The news of an iPad version was quietly slipped in alongside plans for updated versions for iPhone, BlackBerry and Symbian, all of which will be outed in Barcelona.

Opera’s iPhone browser finally convinced Apple to allow competitors to Safari, and it’ll be interesting to see just how the web tool translates to a larger mobile screen. Opera is nowhere near as successful on desktops as it is on mobiles.

Enough to make you switch from Safari? Let us know what you think of Opera’s plans on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

MWC 2011: HTC Desire 2 specs leaked

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 02:40 AM PST

New HTC smartphones on the way

HTC's plans for Mobile World Congress 2011 appear to be unravelling just days before the expo kicks off as details emerge on the Desire 2, Desire HD and Wildfire 2.

Pocketnow who first hinted that a Desire 2 and was on the HTC agenda, appear to have stumbled on specs for the trio of handsets which look likely to be unveiled at an event scheduled for February 14th.

The first HTC Desire was successsfully launched at last year's MWC, and the follow-up to the Desire looks set to follow suit powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm 8250 SnapDragon processor and hosting a 3.7-inch Super LCD display. Other specs include a 5-megapixel front camera, 2-megapixel rer-facing camera, HD video recording, 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal memory.

Details of the HD Desire HD 2 suggest it could be the star of the show with a 1.2GHz (Dual Core) Qualcomm SnapDragon processor under the bonnet, a 8-megapixel camera, 512MB RAM and 8GB internal memory amongst its most notable specs.

The HTC Wildfire 2 which looked to have already been spotted in a HTC promotional video, will sport a 3.2-inch TFT display and pack a 600Mhz MSM 7227 processor. Other notable features include a 5-megapixel camera, HD video recording (720p), 384MB RAM, however there are no details regarding internal memory.

With three handsets seemingly outed ahead of the February 14th event, that leaves us to be amazed by the much rumoured HTC Flyer tablet, a slew of HTC Facebook phones, and possibly a button-less smartphone.

HTC Android Facebook phone heading to MWC?

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 02:02 AM PST

Denials from social network about dedicated Facebook phone fail to stop rumour gathering pace.

HTC is prepping a new Android phone with a dedicated Facebook button, and will have it primed and ready to show the world’s press at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The news comes from the Financial Times, which says the phone will make an appearance alongside HTC’s much-touted Android tablet.

Facebook recently denied that a phone centred round the social network existed. However, that followed claims that a cloud-based blower using Facebook’s branding was about to be released. A phone with one push access to Facebook is a different proposition entirely.

The news comes after INQ unveiled its Facebook-friendly Cloud Touch yesterday. That phone already rocks deep integration with the social network, including one touch access to friends, news feeds and status updates. You can check out our hands-on with the Cloud Touch now.

BlackBerry PlayBook getting Android apps?

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 01:08 AM PST

RIM working on own software to allow access to apps.

The BlackBerry PlayBook might look and feel like a bona fide iPad rival. But it’s lacking something when it comes to decent apps. That’s why RIM is said to be working on a way to bring Android apps to the forthcoming slate.

“Three people familiar with the matter,” claim that the BlackBerry maker is developing special software internally, having decided against using Google’s Dalvik, the Java software used for Android apps.

Analysts reckon this is a savvy move by RIM, as it will offer the security and work smarts of a BlackBerry device, with the welter of Android apps already on offer, hence making it a decent tool for work and play.

BlackBerry App World only has 20,000 or so add-ons, compared to around 130,000 in Android Market. If it does make the move, it will be interesting to see just how Google reacts. Does the PlayBook need Android apps? Or is this a bad move by RIM? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 tie-up official

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 11:55 PM PST

Much-rumoured tie-up sees Symbian and MeeGo relegated to second string status.

Nokia and Microsoft have just confirmed they’re entering a “strategic partnership,” essentially a fancy way of saying the Finnish phone maker is going to start using Windows Phone 7 as its main smartphone OS.

In a joint statement, Nokia and Microsoft said that under the deal, “Nokia would adopt Windows Phone as its principal smartphone strategy.” Ultimately, this means Windows Phone 7 will become Nokia’s main focus. Bing is set to power search on Nokia’s phones, while Xbox Live will also make the move. In return Microsoft will be able to integrate Nokia’s ace Ovi Maps into Bing search.

So what about Symbian? Nokia says it will become, “…a franchise platform,” saying it wants to, “…retain and transition,” existing users. That sounds very much like the OS is finally on its way out to us.

Meanwhile MeeGo, once heralded as Nokia’s great smartphone hope, will become, “… an open source mobile operating system project”. Nokia’s statement says the company still plans to release a MeeGo phone this year, but expect it to be a niche product and nothing more. A N900 for 2011, perhaps.

This astonishing move comes just days after Stephen Elop told his staff they were, “…standing on a burning platform,” and that one Google Android exec dismissed an alliance between Microsoft and Nokia, saying two turkeys don’t make an eagle.

Has Nokia made the right choice? Or should it have gone with Android instead? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

iPhone mini rumours rise again

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 11:35 PM PST

Is iPhone 5 set to get a small-time partner?

The once hotly tipped iPhone mini has reared its head this morning, with a new report from Bloomberg claiming that Apple is working on a pared down version of its best-selling handset.

T3 Predicts: iPhone Mini pictures

Word from, “…people who have been briefed on the plans,” is that Apple is priming a blower around a third smaller than the current iPhone 4. What’s more, it’s set to cost $200 (£124) SIM-free, making this the kind of cheap proposition that’ll have the forthcoming HTC Wildfire 2 and HP Veer rightly worried.

We’ve been here before of course. Apple denied that such a phone ever existed and that making an iPhone Mini would dilute the phone’s status as one of smartphone world’s most premium products.

Bloomberg’s sources do say they haven’t seen the iPhone mini since last year, suggesting it may have been put on the back burner. But an announcement this summer, alongside the iPhone 5 at WWDC, would surely give Apple fresh impetus in its battle for smartphone supremacy with Google Android.

Would you buy an iPhone mini? Or is Apple’s phone all about being top end? Tell us what you think on our Facebook and Twitter pages now.

Official Twitter for Android app overhauled

Posted: 10 Feb 2011 11:00 PM PST

Finally, an official Twitter app for Android worthy of the name.

Android tweeps are waking up to a treat this morning, with a brand new, and much needed, new official Twitter app waiting to be downloaded from the Android Market

Twitter 2.0 for Android offers a big improvement on the first iteration, ditching the blue homescreen with the big icons and sluggish menus for a slick, user-friendly tabbed interface that runs much faster than the original.

The new app now makes it easier to find your friends on Twitter. Once the app starts-up, it'll take a nose through your contacts and serve-up those who are already using the service.

The new tabbed interface allows users to quickly slide between tweets, @replies, direct messages and lists, without returning to the homescreen.  Hitting the search icon within the app offers access to trending topics, while the Android menu button directs you to your own profile.

Sending Tweets is a lot easier too. There's an auto complete option for @replies, so you don't have to type in the entire username, while there's also a drop-down box for you to select the contact manually. Another improvement is that you're now able to send tweets with your GPS switched off and they've also made it easier to add pictures to your tweets, either by selecting them from your gallery or using the camera.

There is one slight disappointment amid all of these improvements. The one thing we liked about the original app was the little options menu that popped-up when you slid your finger across any tweet in your feed. Now you have to push on the tweet and open it in full to send a reply or retweet.

You'll need Android 2.1 or higher to take advantage of the new Twitter for Android app, which is a free update from the Android Market now.
