News@8pm: HTC price leaks, video game BAFTAs

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

Mere days after their Mobile World Congress announcements, the HTC Desire S's price and release date have been leaked, followed quickly by those of the HTC Wildfire S. HTC fans have a little over a month to wait before picking them up, although in the meantime, you can have a look at which other products have been leaked in our feature.

On the gaming front, we were in equal measure shocked, frightened, appalled and delighted by the trailer for the upcoming first-person zombie slasher Dead Island - so much so we made it the lead in a feature of games we're looking forward to this year. Be warned: dismemberment and bitey children ahead.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See all the hands on pictures and videos from Mobile World Congress at the T3.com MWC 2011 microsite

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another blip on the gaming radar was the announcement of 2011's Video Game BAFTA nominees. To be hosted once again by Irish funnyman Dara O'Briain, the big night is set for March 16th, with the ceremony being streamed live via the BAFTA website.

If you've been following the tablet race since Apple fired the starting pistol, you'll have seen that pretty much every tech producer has churned out their own contender to stake a claim on the tablet market. All except one. Which is part of the reason why we're so excited by rumours of the Sony S1 PlayStation tablet. The other reason is that it's supposed to roll up like a bit of newspaper - madness.

On the subject of tablets, we've also seen the leaking of Dell's entire road map for the next two years - that's every tablet and every smartphone they had under wraps for the next 24 months. Great for us, less good, presumably, for some poor sap at Dell. We also caught wind of the Motorola Xoom's official pricing, which is apparently in free-fall since those horrible rumours about a $1200 price tag. Check out our hands-on in the video below.

Finally, Google has followed Apple down the road of fees for paid subscriber content with its new One Pass system. Neither decision has been met entirely with open arms by the internet community, with Last.FM co-founder Richard Jones declaring that Apple's new system has "f*cked the music subscription industry", but from our point of view, it's a good way for our iPad readership to take delivery of the T3 iPad app.

Pulse reader iPad app gets YouTube integration

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:13 AM PST

Get your favourite content from APIs across the web.

The uber-successful iPad news reader app Pulse has sensed that maybe RSS feeds aren't the be-all-end-all of news content and has added support from some our favourite content providers.

The app, which Steve Jobs gleefully demonstrated at last year's iPad launch, has integrated feeds from API's in order to boost the content on offer from the app.

Users will now be able to access feeds from YouTube, Reddit, Digg and Flickr, among others as the app looks to move beyond being just an RSS app. All of the new channels will be browse-able from within the Pulse app.

"For a lot of our users, Pulse has now become their go-to "browser" for consuming content," said Developer Alphonso Labs on the company blog.

"And this content does not have to be restricted to RSS feeds. Today, we're adding SIX brand new sources to Pulse. Our newest team member, Charles Chen, has worked with six different APIs to bring together some beautiful content right inside Pulse - and this ranges from social news to engaging videos to stunning photographs."

The new content can be accessed through the Featured tab and the new upgrade also comes to the iPhone and Android.

BBC iPlayer Partner Linking offers competitor's content

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 08:40 AM PST

BBC catch up service now offers competitor's content

The BBC has launched a content sharing initiative for the iPlayer that will see the likes of ITV, Channel 4 and Five make content available from the catch-up service.

Whilst the additional programming will not be viewable directly within the iPlayer setup, full on-demand listings for the competitive terrestrial and digital channels will be available with users being redirected to the respective sites and catch-up content providers.

The ‘Partner Linking’ movement will see iPlayer users gain quick and convenient access to the full array of ITV, Channel 4 and Five channels as well as offerings from SeeSaw.com, S4C and the MSN Player.

Speaking in an official blog, the BBC’s Paul Clarke declared: "We think BBC Online should serve as a hub to support other UK sites and want to double the traffic we send externally.”

He added: "Already the BBC News product is one of the top 5 sites driving referrals to UK newspapers, adding value to the UK online economy and our audiences: this partnership is a good example of how the BBC iPlayer can follow in those footsteps.”

Stepping on the toes of the repeatedly delayed set top box initiative YouView, Clarke went on to state: "Given the popularity of BBC iPlayer, we hope this feature will support fellow broadcasters and boost the overall uptake of video on demand."

What do you think of the BBC’s decision to include links out to its competitors’ on-demand content? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Apple iPhone 5 release to see touchscreen shortages

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 08:18 AM PST

iPad 2 and iPhone 5 releases to see touchscreen stocks dwindle

Apple’s dominance of the smartphone and tablet markets could see competitors suffer touchscreen stock shortages later this year it has been revealed.

With Apple reportedly looking to ship 40 million iPads in 2011 as well as launching the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5 it is believed that the Cupertino tech giant has secured control of around 60 per cent of the world’s touchscreen production, leaving its rivals under stocked and struggling to meet demand.

Said to be piling its extensive cash reserves in to key component stocks, Apple is looking to counteract shortages that have seen it unable to meet huge demand for launch products in recent years.

Set to affect second-tier tech players the most, the rise in touchscreen devices from the likes of BlackBerry, HTC, HP, Motorola, Samsung, Dell and LG will see smaller, emerging and lesser known manufacturers fail to meet expectations and demand for their devices.

iPod, iPad or iPhone, which of Apple’s fleet of touchscreen devices most takes your fancy? Let us know via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

New Apple MacBook Pro release set for March 1st?

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 07:29 AM PST

MacBook Pro to receive SSD and instant-on upgrade?

Apple’s new MacBook Pro is set to launch in the UK on March 1st new reports suggest, with the leading laptop to feature Intel’s next-gen core technology, Sandy Bridge.

Delayed slightly due to a design flaw in the Sandy Bridge hardware that resulted in a mass Intel recall, Apple is reported to be targeting a March 1st arrival as web blog Apple Insider claims “a person familiar with the matter” confirms the new range will go live within two weeks.

That latest arrival predictions and leaks fit with reports that appeared last week courtesy of MacRumours which also touted a March 1st arrival for the updated hugely popular Apple computer.

Although yet to be confirmed it is expected that the new MacBook Pro arrival will sport a few design changes to bring the device more in-line with its MacBook Air brethren. Whilst the inclusion of Solid State Drives and possible instant-on technology top many people’s hit lists, it is unknown whether the Pro’s increased power requirements would allow for such additions.

What adaptations would you like to see appear on the next generation of the Apple MacBook Pro? Share your thoughts with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

US Tabloid claims Steve Jobs has 6 weeks to live

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 05:05 AM PST

The National Enquirer claims Steve Jobs 'has 6 weeks' to live but the Apple boss is scheduled to meet US President Barack Obama and the claims have been dismissed.

Apple CEO and company talisman Steve Jobs has reportedly been given just six weeks to live after he was spotted outside the Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, California.

Reported by the National Enquirer, a US-based tabloid, a “skeletal-looking” Jobs was snapped leaving the cancer specialist after lunching with his wife. In a somewhat un-scientific move the paper then passed the images on to critical-care physician Dr Samuel Jacobson for analysis.

Based on the photographs, Dr Jacobson callously declared Jobs, who has been on amedically-induced leave of absence from Apple since last month, "is close to terminal. I would say he has six weeks."

The Enquirer added to this less than convincing evidence with physician Dr Gabe Mirkin throwing his two cents in on the photographs. He said: "He definitely appears to be in the terminal stages of his life from these photos.” Adding: “He is terminal. What you are seeing is extreme muscle wasting from calorie depravation, most likely caused by cancer. He has no muscle left in his buttocks, which is the last place to go."

Jobs’ current medical leave of absence is his third from Apple since 2004 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer before undergoing a liver transplant in 2009.

Announcing his latest medical absence one month ago on January 17th, Steve Jobs stated: "At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.”

Jobs concluded: “I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.”

These claims of Jobs’ life expectancy have yet to be confirmed or denied by the Apple founder’s people with the pictures taken just a day after Jobs was reported to have spent a full day working within the Apple compound alongside COO and stand-in replacement Tim Cook.

Sony S1 PlayStation tablet in the works

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 04:24 AM PST

PlayStation tablet mock-up pictures surface

Sony looks set to join the tablet party after all with a 9.4-inch device being touted with serious gaming credentials.

As well as getting their hands on this mock-up image, Engadget claims to have had the device confirmed by “trusted and independent sources” that say the slate, codenamed “S1” will run on Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS.

In terms of key features, Sony’s recently launched Qriocity service will play a major role in helping the S1 to deliver music, games, ebooks and video on demand content.

As well as landing with Sony PS One games preloaded onto the tablet, some form of PlayStation integration is likely to feature as well. The S1 is now apparently PlayStation certified which is good news for gaming tablet fans.

Unlike the more conventional design of the tablets we have seen so far, we can expect a ‘wrap’ design for the S1 which is said to mimic an open paperback stuffed into the back pocket. Bizarre as that sounds, it is supposed to make the tablet better to touch-type on, and make it easier to hold in one hand.

Constructed from materials that ‘feel premium’ the S1 will boast front and rear-facing cameras, a USB-A port, an IR port for controlling other devices, a Bravia Remote function, and will pack a Tegra 2 processor. A dedicated Qriocity button is something that is still currently up for discussion.

There has even been talk of Sony S1 pricing with $599 being tipped for a Wi-Fi only version. It is also expected to start shipping in September, which is around about the time many are talking about Apple preparing a tablet -shaped ‘surprise’ for us as well.

Do you like the sound of the Sony S1 tablet? Let us know your thoughts via Twitter and Facebook.

While we wait for the Sony PlayStation tablet to surface you can take a look at the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 'PSP' phone to get a taste of what could be on the way.

Dell tablets and smartphone releases up to 2012 revealed

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 03:04 AM PST

6 tablets and 3 smartphones show up in leaked release chart

Right, where do we begin? Firstly, we should say that the information we have here is from a highly reliable source inside Dell, and that what we’re looking at is two leaked roadmaps: one for tablets and one for smartphones, both of which run between now and Q1 2012.

Smartphones first, then. First up – after the Dell Venue Pro, which we already know about – is the Wrigley, a Windows Phone 7 handset due in Q3 2011. It’s got a 1GHz processor, a 4-inch WVGA screen and an 8-meg camera. The Millennium is a 4.3-inch device coming in Q4, running Android 2.4 (Ice Cream). The Hancock – due in Q1 next year – will be a very similar beast, although it’ll sport a 4-inch display and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

See the leaked roadmaps
- Click here to see pics of Dell's upcoming devices

In terms of tablets, we’ll have the already-revealed Streak 7 soon, followed by the Gallo in Q2, which will run Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). We don’t know much about it or its Dell Honeycomb brothers, the Opus One and Silver Oak – both coming inQ1 2012. There are two Windows tablets on the way, too. The Rosemont will be out in Q2 this year running Windows 7, while the Peju – destined for Q1 2012, will run on Windows 8.

That’s a lot to take in. Which of the tablets and phones are you most excited about? Let us know your thoughts on the T3 Twitter feed. Check out the video below to see Android 3.0 Honeycomb in action:

Sony: Pirate the PS3 and be banned from PSN for life

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 02:33 AM PST

Sony clamp down on users who jailbreak the PS3.

Gamers who take advantage of the PlayStation 3 jailbreak to play pirated games on the console will be banned from the PlayStation network for life, according to a statement posted by PlayStation Social Media Manager, Jeff Rubenstein.

"Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software" says Rubenstein. "Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently."

The only way to save your PSN access should you be of a piratical nature is to "immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from [the] PlayStation 3 system."

The jackboot of PlayStation justice has already descended upon several members of the PlayStation forums, who reported receiving stern e-mails from Sony before receiving the PlayStation error 0x8002A227 and the displayed message "You cannot connect to PlayStation Network with this account" when trying to play online or use the PlayStation Store. Google launches One Pass to rival Apple's sub service

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 12:30 AM PST

It's Google vs Apple all over again

Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Google, announced Google One Pass at Humboldt University in Berlin, in time to rival Apple's subscription service.

Google One Pass is an online service that allows publishers set prices and terms for their digital content for tablets, websites and smartphones.

Google One Pass will be taking a 10% commission in order to cover their costs with 90% for the publishers. Techies will remember Apple's subscription service takes 30%, leaving 70% for its publishers.

As they aim for the publishers to have a direct relationship with the customers, publishers will have access to information of those who have subscribed. This ensures people don't have to re-subscribe to access the digital content if they've already subscribed to the print versions.

Google One Pass is available in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US, with plans to expand to other countries eventually.

Lee Shirani, director of business product management said the service also allows publishers to give existing print subscribers free (or discounted) access to digital content. He said, "Our goal is to provide an open and flexible platform that furthers our commitment to support publishers, journalism and access to quality content."

Do you subscribe to online digital content? If you don't already, check out the T3 iPad app now on Apple apps sub service and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the latest in the world of tech.

More Facebook friends could lead to more stress

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 11:00 PM PST

Could you be keeping in touch with friends at the cost of being stressed out?

People who have more Facebook friends are likely to be stressed out, according to a study by Edinburgh Napier University.

Dr Kathy Charles of the University's School of Life, Sport and Social Sciences, was the lead of the study that questioned 200 students. The research concluded that the negative effects of Facebook outweighed the benefits of keeping in touch with friends.

Dr Charles said, "Although there is great pressure to be on Facebook there is also considerable ambivalence amongst users about its benefits. Our data also suggests that there is a significant minority of users who experience considerable Facebook-related anxiety, with only very modest or tenuous rewards."

She added that those with the most contacts and who spent a lot of time on the popular social networking website were most likely to be stressed. Among the participants in the survey, 12% said Facebook made them anxious, while 32% said rejecting friend requests made them feel guilty.

Apparently, while respondents said that the best thing about Facebook was keeping in touch, many said they felt anxious about leaving the site for fear of missing important information or offending their "Facebook friends".

Other causes of tension include getting rid on unwanted contacts, the pressure to be inventive and entertaining (especially with status updates), and having to use appropriate etiquette for different types of 'friends'.

The study used focus groups, an online survey and one-to-one interviews to collect their data.
