Nokia Windows Phone 7 concept handsets surface

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 05:00 AM PST

The future's multi-coloured for Windows and Nokia smartphones.

We'd barely finished reporting that Nokia is to adopt Windows Phone 7 as its new mobile OS of choice before a concept shot of new Nokia/Windows branded handsets appeared online.

According to the Engadget exclusive, the handsets in the photo are indeed concepts born of the Nokia/Windows marriage, although at the moment there's no word on release dates or specs, with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer saying "when there's news, there will be news". All we've got to go on so far is the large touchscreen and tell-tale Windows-branded three-button set up.

But what will become of the current stable of Nokia Symbian handsets? According to Nokia, Symbian and users will be "retain[ed] and transition[ed]", which probably isn't as sinister as it sounds. From where we're sitting, though, Symbian's future looks bleak - even if Nokia's is neon pink and blue.

Samsung Galaxy S2 specs and release date leaked

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 03:48 AM PST

UK mobile site puts Samsung Galaxy S2 up for pre-order - and reveals specs in process.

Although the official teaser video puts the great Mobile World Congress reveal of Samsung's Galaxy S follow-up at Sunday, February 13th, UK phone seller mobilefun.co.uk has jumped the gun and posted up a rather extensive list of Galaxy S2 details on their site - along with an option to pre-order.

Mobilefun pegs the release date at 4th March 2011, and prices the handset at £549.95. Also leaked are the specs, with Sammy fans reportedly able to look forward to a dual-core 1.2GHz Orion processor, a 4.3" Super AMOLED Plus screen, Bluetooth 3.0, 1GB RAM and an 8MP camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording (and a lower-spec front-facing camera for video calls). The S2 runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box.

Also featured is the same NFC (near field communication) technology currently found in the Google Nexus S, which will allow handsets of the future to be used to make payments and money transfers in a similar fashion to Oyster cards.

The Super AMOLED Plus technology is the next generation of Samsung's already blacker-than-black AMOLED screens, which are responsible for the retina-burningly vibrant colours found on the Nexus S and current Galaxy S. The new "Plus" Super AMOLED screens make that contrast even sharper, while also being easier to use in bright sunlight, according to Samsung.

BlackBerry OS 6 for download from Three

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 03:08 AM PST

According to Three's resident tweeter, BlackBerry Bold 9780, Torch 9800, Curve 3G 9300 and Bold 9700 owners can now bump their handsets up to the spanking new BlackBerry OS 6 - complete with better browsing (tabbed, no less), a new media player, a camera upgrade and, finally, proper multi-tasking.

Berry wielding Three customers have only to connect their handset to their computer and follow the on-screen prompts.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 and BlackBerry Torch 9800 already come packing BlackBerry OS 6, but will still benefit from the update, which fixes some scrolling and screen crashing issues.

App week: iPlayer hits Android, Angry Birds Valentine's

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 03:00 AM PST

Every Saturday we round-up the week in mobile applications bringing you news of the biggest new releases across all major platforms and a host of reviews from T3's App Chart. Let's crack on...

APP NEWS:

iPlayer lands on Android and iPad
The apps have been over a year in coming, so it was great relief when this week the BBC iPlayer apps landed on Android and iPad. The catch-up TV service offers free access to all of your favourite BBC TV and radio shows, just like it's in-browser counterpart. Check out our video of the iPad app in action.

Angry Birds get loved up
Surely it was inevitable? Those Angry Birds love to celebrate the holidays so after chasing pigs through Halloween Town and The North Pole, they were bound to exert some tough love on Valentine's Day. The expected Seasons refresh brings 15 new levels to negotiate and it's a free upgrade for Android and iOS devices

"Bless me iPhone for I have sinned"
If you're one of those Catholics you can't stand entering the confession box to unleash your earthly sins then this app for iPhone is a good way to rid yourself of the guilt. Confession: A Catholic App allows you to do the need without pouring it all out in front of a priest. Let's hope the gadget gods are in a forgiving mood.

Official Android Twitter gets Makeover
Perhaps the folks at twitter were fed up of Tweetdeck and Tweetcaster getting all the love on Android because they've come out fighting with a stonking new official app. With a completely redesigned UI that's better designed and easier to use than its predecessor, it also clears up a few bugbears and it's available to download now for phones rocking Android 2.1 and above

Get fit with your Nokia
Nokia has plenty on its plate these days, but it doesn't mean it has stopped caring about you, its loyal users. The Wellness Diary app allows you to keep track on your fitness levels, by allowing you to record your physical activity and set yourself targets to aim for. It also lets you track how much sleep you're getting, which reminds us... we're off for a kip, we'll see you next week.

Tech Week: HP Touchpad and Nokia teams up with Microsoft

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 01:00 AM PST

Yet another busy week in tech has past us by, here are our highlight from the past seven days, enjoy.

News of the Week

Nokia stole the headlines this week for both good and bad reasons. CEO Stephen Elop’s leaked memo revealed perhaps what many believed for some time, that the company was a ‘burning platform, .giving the strongest indication yet that the Finnish mobile manufacturer was set to call in some help.

Nokia and Microsoft officially teamed up on Friday with the Windows Phone 7 OS likely to feature on Nokia phones in the near future. But what does that mean for Nokia's  recently launched MeeGo platform? Well it seems that the Nokia N9 could be ditched, despite comments Elop's memo that there was likely to only be one MeeGo device launching in 2011.

It wouldn’t be a week without a generous helping of Apple rumour-mongering, with some impressive claims grabbing the headlines this week. In order of feasibility, it seems an iOS 4.3 event is being scheduled for 14th February, which falls just as MWC 2011 kicks off.

The Wall Street Journal claimed that the iPad 2 is already in production and has some juicy specs to go with it. That hasn’t stopped talk of an iPad 3 landing for September 11th as it’s being claimed that Apple has a surprise planned later in the year. Rounding things off, and it seems that it could actually be an iPhone mini that will land in late 2011, which of course T3 predicted would come to life a few years back.

Despite a slew of new tablets seemingly launching every week, none have so far been able to match the iPad. The latest to challenge Apple’s tablet stranglehold, is the HP Touchpad which was announced this week at the HP WebOS event. As well signalling the end of the Palm brand with the unveiling of the HP Pre 3 and HP Veer, the Touchpad which measures in at 9.7-inches just like the iPad comfortably stole the show. You can see our HP Touch Pad hands-on review here.

MWC 2011 is but a few days away and unsurprisingly the rumour mill has been in overdrive. HTC stole the show in Barcelona last year, and it seems we can expect much of the same with specs leaked for a HTC Desire 2, HTC Desire HD 2 and the HTC Wildfire 2. The sequel to the budget Android smartphone was spotted in a HTC promotional video earlier in the week, so it seems like we can expect at least a trio of handsets and perhaps a HTC Facebook phone to land at MWC 2011.

One phone we won’t have to wait for is the INQ Cloud Touch Facebook phone, which is not ‘the’ Facebook phone just to clear things up. The British based company revealed its Android 2.2 handset this week and also talked up an INQ Android tablet which could soon join the Cloud Touch in the future.

It is however not such good news for another British based venture as internet connected service YouView suffered delays once again pushing back a release date to 2012. Will YouView ever see the light of day? We are not so sure...
