EU to force social networks to follow new privacy policy

Posted: 20 Mar 2011 05:26 AM PDT

You may be able to say goodbye to all those 3am party pics you wish had never been taken

The European Union (EU) would like social networking sites to adhere to proposals that include the "right to be forgotten online".

The EU justice commissioner, Viviane Reding, gave a speech to the European Parliament where she outlined her plan to force social networking sites including Facebook to give control over data back to the user, wherein they can choose to completely erase their data from the internet.

She said, "A US-based social network company that has millions of active users in Europe needs to comply with EU rules." If passed, it would not matter where the service was physically located; they would still need to adhere to EU laws.

Since January last year, Facebook profiles have been publicly viewable by default and users have to choose to tack on higher privacy settings, for example, ensuring only their friends can see their profile or photographs.

Facebook has confirmed 30 million UK users, which is roughly half its population.

Is your Facebook profile viewable by everyone, and do you know how to tweak your privacy settings? Tell us on our feeds on Twitter and Facebook and follow us for the latest news in the tech world.

Nintendo 3DS might be good for children's eyesight

Posted: 20 Mar 2011 04:29 AM PDT

Go for an eye exam...or buy a Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS might actually be a good way of detecting eye problems in young children, despite some doctors warning that it could be harmful for their eyesight.

The American Optometric Association has come out with the news that, inspite of Nintendo themselves warning that the 3DS should not be used by children under the age of 6, allowing kids to play with the 3D console might help catch vision disorders.

If young children use the 3DS and find they cannot experience the 3D effect, then it's possible they might have amblyopia (lazy eye), which can be treated easily if caught early, while their vision is still developing.

Michael Duenas of the American Optometric Association said, "The 3DS could be a godsend for identifying kids under six who need vision therapy."

According to him, only 15% of pre-school children get comprehensive eye exams that could pick up such issues. If children experience the three D's of 3D: dizziness, discomfort (such as straining the eyes or headaches) and lack of depth, an eye checkup might be in order.

Studies on the effects of excessive 3D viewing on children have not yet been conducted, but we're guessing most parents may like to err on the side of caution.

The Nintendo 3DS has broken Amazon pre-order records is currently priced at £187.
