News@8pm: Playbook plays nice with Android, MPs tweet

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Welcome to your nightly round-up of the day's news and goings on courtesy of T3.com.

iPad 2 launch day fever hit the UK today with hundreds turning up to queue outside the flagship Regent Street Apple store. Some had queued for over 40 hours in order to avoid the 2-3 week shipping time for online orders. Our main man Jewels and his fellow elite 12 at the front of the queue all donned T3's Team Apple t-shirts to show their love. Thanks guys. We'll have our Team Jewels t-shirts made up in no time, we promise.

Xperia Play has nabbed an exclusive title before it even launched. Backstab is said to be an action and adventure game developed by Gameloft that will, so we're told, really show off what the Sony Ericsson handset can do. If Android gaming's your thing but you just can't ditch your Crackberry, then you'll be pleased to hear that RIM confirmed today that Android apps will indeed be able to play on its upcoming Playbook. Wouldn't it be lovely if all apps were universal? Just a thought.

Twitter's iPad app received a timely update today. The updated app will make use of the iPad 2's dual cameras to let users upload photos taken on the device directly to their twitter feed. The update from Twitter came just hours before the UK launch of the iPad 2, so new owners will be able to video-tweet from day one. Following a committee decision that may allow MPs to use iPads and to tweet in the House of Commons, don't be surprised if the twittersphere soon clogs up with candid shots of David Cameron picking his nose.

Motorola's ditching Android, or at least that's the word around the web. Speculation surrounding Motorola's recent hiring habits has led many to the conclusion that Motorola is developing its own mobile OS. If true, the move would be perplexing given their success on the Android platform. In an effort to ramp up development of Android Apps, Google announced today that they will launch in-app billing next week. Apple introduced in-app purchasing back in September and it has proven to be lucrative for many developers.

MPs to be able to tweet from inside the House of Commons

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:28 AM PDT

A parliamentary committee has made a recommendation that MPs should be able to tweet

Following the House of Lords' recent decision to allow iPads within the chambers, MPs in the House of Commons might soon be able to tweet mid-debate.

The move is being justified by the discreet volume and pocketable size of today's internet-connected portables. Rules on the nature of the device allowed ultimately came down to "whether they click or not".

To avoid distractions, use of the devices was originally limited to reading documents whilst listening to the debate but not whilst speaking. It also stipulated that MPs should not be using the device to search the web for more information.

However, the newest development would allow politicians to tweet about proceedings in the galleries, stating that in the committee's view it was "no different in degree from presenters commenting on live broadcasts of proceedings".

The committee's recommendation is by no means final and has already been met with some objections by those who feel that Members should be their to participate in the debate and not to be distracted by their electronic devices.

Despite the criticism, a spokesperson for the House of Commons has stated that it is likely to come into effect in "a short number of weeks."

So it looks like you could soon be following your local MP as a debate unfolds within the chambers.

And who knows? With politicians glued to their iPhones, there may finally be silence in the boisterous chambers.

Should MPs be allowed to tweet from the chambers or should they be focused on the issues at hand? Let us know your thoughts via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds

Twitter updates iPad 2 app with video and photo capture

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:18 AM PDT

Make use of those dual cameras right out of the box and tweet your purchase to the world

Twitter has chosen iPad 2 UK launch day to update its official application and make use of the new Apple tablet's two new camera lenses.

Twitter for iPad now allows users to post pictures and video shot directly from the device and upload the, directly to your Twitter feed, just like the iPhone iteration.

Users will also be able to choose which service they use to upload the camera footage, with TwitVid, yFrog and Posterous among the options.

It's quite a subtle change that offers the option to use the camera or shots already existing in the camera roll, when attempting to add a picture to a new tweet.

The update, which also features a number of bug fixes, is available to download from the App Store now and we suggest it as one of the first you snag when you get the wrapper off that iPad 2 in a matter of hours.

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:16 AM PDT

Second-gen Apple tablet attracks large queues

With just hours to go until the UK release of the Apple iPad 2, queues outside Apple’s flagship Regent Street store have begun circling the block with Team Apple posing a strong force.

Lead by first in the queue, 32 year old Jewels Lewis, the first 12 people preparing to buy the eagerly awaited iPad 2 have shown their support for the Cupertino-based company and which side of T3’s OS campaign they fall by donning Team Apple t-shirts.

Set to go on sale at 5pm this evening, eager iPad 2 consumers have been queuing from as early as 7:30 yesterday morning to avoid the 2-3 week delivery waiting period that is to plague those early online preorders made following this morning’s web store addition.

Adding front and rear facing cameras, the new A5 1GHz dual-core processor and a slimmer, lighter form factor, the Apple iPad 2 will be available from £399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model with prices rising up to £659 for the 64GB Wi-Fi +3G edition. For the first table Apple’s market leading tablet will be available as either a black or a white model.

Will you be snapping up the Apple iPad 2 today? Let us know and if so what edition you are going for via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Weird News: Controversial apps and pricey app machines

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:15 AM PDT

A look at the more eccentric side of tech world's last seven days

OMG!
That nonsensical collection of letters, along with the likes of ‘LOL’ and even the utterly ridiculous ‘<3’ have now entered the hallowed pages of the Oxford English Dictionary, which is a clear signpost that mankind is sliding ever further backwards along the evolutionary scale. Wel dun every1.

Air Smartphone
Of all the things to focus on when improving air travel, we’d say that the quality of the onboard phone is pretty low on the list. Aircell begs to differ, though – it’s pumping its cash not into improving the in-flight meals, but into the quality of the telephones onboard. Now business class flyers on selected flights can call their uninterested friends via touchscreen, which will no doubt profoundly change their sad little lives forever.

Duke Nukem (is taking) Forever
The game that’s been through a more prolonged phase of development hell than every project from Grand Designs put together is almost upon us. Except it’s not. Well, it is, but it’s going to take a while longer. We’ll leave it to the developers to explain…

Controversial app is controversial
Apple’s usually tight bad app net let a rather large fish through this week. When a controversial and wildly homophobic ‘Gay Cure’ app got approved for the App Store, the world – quite rightly - threw its hands up in disgust, prompting its swift removal. Doing something bad and then undoing it is the same as not doing something bad in the first place, right Apple?

£5 million iPad 2
At the time of writing (March 25th), there are hundreds of bloodthirsty Apple fanbois wasting precious hours of their short lives queuing up at Apple stores around the country. What are they after? The iPad 2, of course. Presumably, they’re all there because they don’t much fancy the Gold History Edition – a hitherto unmathed exercise in gaudiness that smatters Apple’s tablet in gold and T-Rex thigh bone. Cost to you? A mere £5 million.

Do the robot
You know when you see something that your brain can’t quite work out? Something that you think you understand, but there’s an alien element of surreal, physics-defying mystery about it? This video is one of those things. We think the thing inside the costume is a human, but we’ve never seen a human manage to move in such a way. Put simply: Android got skillz.

And finally…

Bigfoot spied

We know this isn’t tech related, but we thought we’d better bring you this slice of madness from the States, in which something blurry does something indecipherable for about 5 seconds. …Which the videographer then claims is indisputable proof of Bigfoot…

Motorola engineers creating their own OS?

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 05:27 AM PDT

Android's been very good to Motorola, but are they working on a rival OS behind closed doors?

In a bizarre twist of events the rumour mill is churning with news of Motorola's intentions to develop its own mobile OS.

It would appear that a recent spate of hiring decisions is the cause of the sudden speculation. Acquiring a slew of experienced mobile and Web engineers, the assumption is that the new OS will be web-based, similar to HP's WebOS.

Given the success Moto has enjoyed with Android, this may seem slightly out of the blue. However, it would appear Motorola may have been planning such a move for a long time. CEO Sanjay Jha is reported to have said in a 2010 earnings call that "owning your OS is important, provided you have an ecosystem."

In creating its own OS, Motorola would be taking on the two largest ecosystems in the mobile industry, Apple's iOS and Google's Android, its current bedfellow and provider of the Honeycomb OS found on the Motorola iPad challenger, the Motorola Xoom.

Given the strength Motorola has built off the back of Android, we would hope that any plans to go solo will be strictly as a plan B rather than ditching Google's little green robot entirely, lest they end up another Symbian-esque cautionary tale.

Would you be interested in a device with Moto's own OS, or should they stick with Android? Let us know via the T3 Facebook and Twitter feeds.

BlackBerry PlayBook Android app compatibility confirmed

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 03:57 AM PDT

Angry Birds finds yet another home

RIM has confirmed that it plans to launch an API for developers to easily let users run Android apps on the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The confirmation is a real boon for the device, which is launching in a market where a decent app library can make the difference between success and failure.

“Developers wanting to bring their new and existing apps to the highly anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will soon have additional tools and options to enhance and expand their commercial opportunities,” said RIM.

“Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility.”

Explaining how the system will work, RIM said that “The new optional app players will be available for download from BlackBerry App World and will be placed in a secure ‘sandbox’ on the BlackBerry PlayBook.” It’ll allow the PlayBook to play BlackBerry, Java or any of the 150,000 available apps from the Android Market.

iPad 2 pre-orders live with three week shipping delay

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 03:55 AM PDT

iPad 2 online orders to face three week delivery wait

Online pre-orders for the Apple iPad 2 have gone live in the UK with consumers look to get hold of the second-gen tablet to face a three week wait.

Set to hit stores across the UK and 25 other countries at 5pm today, the Apple iPad 2 is to launch featuring both front and rear mounted cameras, the new A5 dual-core processor and a slimmer, lighter form factor than the original model.

With queues starting outside Apple’s flagship Regent Street store at 7:30am yesterday morning, those eager to forgo the predicted wait facing online orders will see their efforts rewarded as they pick up their new iDevice three week’s ahead of online buyers.

As well as adding a bevy of new hardware features Apple has dropped the price of the iPad 2 compared to its predecessor with the base model 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 available for a surprisingly reasonable £399. Prices continue all the way up to a hefty £659 for the 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G edition.

Wannabe iPad 2 owners looking for more storage whilst sticking to the Wi-Fi only connection option will be able to pick up the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi models for £479 and £559 respectively. On the 3G front the 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi + 3G iPad 2’s will be priced at £499 and £579 each.

Duke Nukem Forever release date pushed back (again)

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 03:47 AM PDT

The Duke's return gets pushed back another month.

We've been all outta gum for more than 14 years, but Duke Nukem fans itching to get down to the serious business of clubbing aliens and saving babes are in for one more month of R&R before getting their trigger fingers all over Duke Nukem Forever, now scheduled to be released on June 10th in Europe.

The announcement was made in a cheeky video skit by Gearbox Software head honcho Randy Pitchford (which you can check out below). This puts the game's development time at a whopping 14 years two months, with development first announced way back in April 1997.

According to Pitchford, the delay is to allow the Gearbox crew to finish adding the final layer of polish to the game. That's the delay from May to June, not the delay from 1997 to 2011, presumably.

Google to launch Android In-app billing next week

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 01:10 AM PDT

Android developers...this one's for you

Google has finally announced that In-app billing will be launched next week, with the developer's console already readied for testing of the apps.

According to a post by Eric Chu on the Android Developer's blog, Google is opening up the Android Market for developers to upload and test apps that will be using In-app billing.

App developers can upload their apps now, catalogs of in-app products can be created and prices can also be assigned, with developers allowed to test their apps to make sure everything is in working order before the full launch. The post says, "During these test transactions, the In-app Billing service interacts with your app exactly as it will for actual users and live transactions."

The apps that will be uploaded by developers during the testing stage will be made available to the end users only after the launch of the service next week.

Apps on the iPhone already have the luxury of in-app billing; with Android joining the in-app billing club, developers can make their apps even more lucrative.

Google launches Think Quarterly magazine

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 12:25 AM PDT

Google enters the magazine fray

Google has moved into another sphere towards world domination, by launching a new magazine in the UK for its partners and advertisers, called Think Quarterly.

The magazine will be published, obviously enough, four times a year, and the first edition is dedicated to Data and a copy has been sent to their target audience. Google said on the website they have no plans to sell copies of the magazine.

Google has posted information about the new magazine on its official website, where you can also view the entire first issue for free, if you're interested in the topics covered, which includes an interview with Guy Laurence, CEO of Vodafone UK, a visual history of data capture, a feature on where to find 'sexy data' online and more.

The post says, "Like most companies, Google regularly communicates with our business customers via email newsletters, updates on our official blogs, and printed materials."

Matt Brittin, Managing Director, UK & Ireland Operations of Google also posted on the site, and said, "Think Quarterly is a breathing space in a busy world. It's a place to take time out and consider what's happening and why it matters."

Would you buy a copy of Think Quarterly if it was on sale? Let us know what you think of Google's latest offering by popping over to our Twitter and Facebook pages, and follow us for regular updates in the tech world.
